We investigate the polarons formed by immersing a spinor impurity in a ferromagnetic state of $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The ground state energies and effective masses of the polarons are calculated in both weak-coupling regime and strong-coupling regime. In the weakly interacting regime the second order perturbation theory is performed. In the strong coupling regime we use a simple variational treatment. The analytical approximations to the energy and effective mass of the polarons are constructed. Especially, a transition from the mobile state to the self-trapping state of the polaron in the strong coupling regime is discussed. We also estimate the signatures of polaron effects in spinor BEC for the future experiments.

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with repulsive s-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions become non-vanishing. We make comparisons with collective excitations in the ordinary Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling and in a helical liquid, i.e., surface states of a three dimensional topological insulator. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

We investigate normal state properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases with repulsive s-wave interaction, in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called "upper branch". Within the framework of random phase approximation, we derive analytical expressions for the quasi-particle lifetime $\tau_s$, the effective mass $m_s^*$, and the Green's function renormalization factor $Z_s$ in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to spin-orbit coupled electron gas with Coulomb interaction, we show that the modifications are dependent on the Rashba band index s, and occur in the first order of the spin-orbit coupling strength. We also calculate experimental observable such as spectral weight, density of state and specific heat, which exhibit significant differences from their counterparts without spin-orbit coupling. We expect our microscopic calculations of these Fermi liquid parameters would have the immediate applications to the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of the energy spectrum.

We investigate the quantum fluctuation effects in the vicinity of the critical point of a $p$-orbital bosonic system in a square optical lattice using Wilsonian renormalization group, where the $p$-orbital bosons condense at nonzero momenta and display rich phases including both time-reversal symmetry invariant and broken BEC states. The one-loop renormalization group analysis generates corrections to the mean-field phase boundaries. We also show the quantum fluctuations in the $p$-orbital system tend to induce the ordered phase but not destroy it via the the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, which is qualitative different from the ordinary quantum fluctuation corrections to the mean-field phase boundaries in $s$-orbital systems. The method of synthetic gauge potentials opens up a new avenue for our understanding and discovering novel quantum states of matter. We investigate the topological quantum phase transition of Fermi gases trapped in a honeycomb lattice in the presence of a synthetic non- Abelian gauge potential. We develop a systematic fermionic effective field theory to describe a topological quantum phase transition tuned by the non-Abelian gauge potential and ex- plore its various important experimental consequences. Numerical calculations on lattice scales are performed to compare with the results achieved by the fermionic effective field theory. Several possible experimental detection methods of topological quantum phase tran- sition are proposed. In contrast to condensed matter experiments where only gauge invariant quantities can be measured, both gauge invariant and non-gauge invariant quantities can be measured by experimentally generating various non-Abelian gauges corresponding to the same set of Wilson loops.

We theoretically study a possible new pairing mechanism for a two-dimensional population imbalanced Fermi gas with short-range repulsive interactions which can be realized on the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance. We use a well-controlled renormalization group approach, which allows an unbiased study of the instabilities of imbalanced Fermi liquid without assumption of a broken symmetry and gives a numerical calculation of the transition temperature from microscopic parameters. Our results show a leading superfluid instability in the p-wave channel for the majority species. The corresponding mechanism is that there are effective attractive interactions for the majority species, induced by the particle-hole susceptibility of the minority species, where the mismatch of the Fermi surfaces of the two species plays an important role. We investigate the non-Abelian Josephson effect in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with double optical traps. We propose, for the first time, a real physical system which contains non-Abelian Josephson effects. The collective modes of this weak coupling system have very different density and spin tunneling characters comparing to the Abelian case. We calculate the frequencies of the pseudo Goldstone modes in different phases between two traps respectively, which are a crucial feature of the non-Abelian Josephson effects. We discuss a Casimir force due to zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a strong harmonic trap. The results show that the presence of a strong harmonic trap changes the power law behavior of Casimir force due to the dimensional reduction effect. At finite temperature, we calculate Casimir force due to thermal fluctuation and find an exotic temperature dependent behavior in the first order term. Finally, we speculate some possible experimental realization and detection of the force in future experiments., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We review our results for lattice QCD at finite temperature and density from analytical and numerical calculations with Wilson fermions and overlap fermions., Comment: Lattice 2005 (non-zero temperature and density)

We perform the first study of lattice QCD with overlap fermions at finite temperature $T$ and chemical potential $\mu$. We start from the Taylor expanded overlap fermion action, and derive in the strong coupling limit the effective free energy by mean field approximation. On the ($\mu,T$) plane and in the chiral limit, there is a tricritical point, separating the second order chiral phase transition line at small $\mu$ and large $T$, and first order chiral phase transition line at large $\mu$ and small $T$.
