We study the universal real-time relaxation behaviors of a long-range quantum XY chain following a quench. Our research includes both the noncritical and critical quench. In the case of noncritical quench, i.e., neither the initial state nor the postquench Hamiltonian is at a critical point of equilibrium phase transition, a quench to the commensurate phase or incommensurate phase gives a scaling of $t^{-3/2}$ or $t^{-1/2}$, respectively, which is the same as the counterpart of the short-range XY model. However, for a quench to the boundary line between the commensurate and incommensurate phases, the scaling law $t^{-\mu}$ may be different from the $t^{-3/4}$ law of the counterpart of the short-range model. More interestingly, the decaying exponent $\mu$ may depend on the choice of the parameters of the postquench Hamiltonian because of the different asymptotic behaviors of the energy spectrum. Furthermore, in certain cases, the scaling behavior may be outside the range of predictions made by the stationary phase approximation, because an inflection point emerges in the energy spectrum. Diverse magnetic and electronic properties of halogen-adsorbed silicene are investigated by the first-principles theoretical framework, including the adatom-diversified geometric structures, the atom-dominated energy bands, the spatial spin density distributions, the spatial charge density distributions and its variations, and the spin- and orbital-projected density of states. Also, such physical quantities are sufficient to identify similar and different features in the double-side and single-side adsorptions. The former belongs to the concentration-depended finite gap semiconductors or p-type metals, while the latter display the valence energy bands with/without spin-splitting intersecting with the Fermi level. Both adsorption types show the halogen-related weakly dispersed bands at deep energies, the adatom-modified middle-energy sigma bands, and the recovery of low-energy pi bands during the destruction of the halogen concentrations. Such feature-rich band structures can be verified by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiment.

Recurrent event data arise frequently in various fields such as biomedical sciences, public health, engineering, and social sciences. In many instances, the observation of the recurrent event process can be stopped by the occurrence of a correlated failure event, such as treatment failure and death. In this article, we propose a joint scale-change model for the recurrent event process and the failure time, where a shared frailty variable is used to model the association between the two types of outcomes. In contrast to the popular Cox-type joint modeling approaches, the regression parameters in the proposed joint scale-change model have marginal interpretations. The proposed approach is robust in the sense that no parametric assumption is imposed on the distribution of the unobserved frailty and that we do not need the strong Poisson-type assumption for the recurrent event process. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed semiparametric estimators under suitable regularity conditions. To estimate the corresponding variances of the estimators, we develop a computationally efficient resampling-based procedure. Simulation studies and an analysis of hospitalization data from the Danish Psychiatric Central Register illustrate the performance of the proposed method. Biased sampling occurs frequently in economics, epidemiology, and medical studies either by design or due to data collecting mechanism. Failing to take into account the sampling bias usually leads to incorrect inference. We propose a unified estimation procedure and a computationally fast resampling method to make statistical inference for quantile regression with survival data under general biased sampling schemes, including but not limited to the length-biased sampling, the case-cohort design, and variants thereof. We establish the uniform consistency and weak convergence of the proposed estimator as a process of the quantile level. We also investigate more efficient estimation using the generalized method of moments and derive the asymptotic normality. We further propose a new resampling method for inference, which differs from alternative procedures in that it does not require to repeatedly solve estimating equations. It is proved that the resampling method consistently estimates the asymptotic covariance matrix. The unified framework proposed in this article provides researchers and practitioners a convenient tool for analyzing data collected from various designs. A systematic study is conducted on the fluorination-enriched essential properties of 2D graphene and 1D graphene nanoribbons using the first-principles method. The combined effects, which arise from the significant chemical bonds in C-C, F-C and F-F bonds, the finite-size quantum confinement, and the edge structure, can greatly diversify geometric structures, electronic properties and magnetic configurations. By the detailed analyses, the critical orbital hybridizations in determining the essential properties are accurately identified from the atom-dominated energy bands, the spatial charge distributions, and the orbital-projected density of states. The top-site F-C bonds, with the multi-orbital hybridizations, create the non-uniform buckled honeycomb lattice. There exist the C-, F- and (C, F)-dominated energy bands. Fluorinated graphene belongs either to the p-type metals (with/without the ferromagnetic spin arrangement) or to the large-gap semiconductors (without magnetism), depending on the concentration and distribution of adatoms. Specially, fluorinated graphene nanoribbons, with armchair/zigzag edge, presents five kinds of spin-dependent properties, covering the non-magnetic and ferromagnetic metals, non-magnetic semiconductors, and anti-ferromagnetic semiconductors with/without the spin splitting. The various band-edge states in 2D and 1D systems appear as the rich and unique structures in density of states. Part of theoretical predictions are consistent with the experimental measurements, and the others are worthy of the further examinations. The feature-rich electronic and magnetic properties of fluorine-doped graphene nanoribbons are investigated by the first-principles calculations. They arise from the cooperative or competitive relations among the significant chemical bonds, finite-size quantum confinement and edge structure. There exist C-C, C-F, and F-F bonds with the multi-orbital hybridizations. Fluorine adatoms can create the p-type metals or the concentration- and distribution-dependent semiconductors, depending on whether the $\pi$ bonding is seriously suppressed by the top-site chemical bonding. Furthermore, five kinds of spin-dependent electronic and magnetic properties cover the non-magnetic and ferromagnetic metals, the non-magnetic semiconductors, and the anti-ferromagnetic semiconductors with/without the spin splitting. The diverse essential properties are clearly revealed in the spatial charge distribution, the spin density, and the orbital-projected density of states.

The alkali-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons exhibit the feature-rich electronic and magnetic properties. From the first-principles calculations, there are only few adatom-dominated conduction bands, and the other conduction and valence bands are caused by carbon atoms. A lot of free electrons are revealed in the occupied alkali- and carbon-dependent conduction bands. Energy bands are sensitive to the concentration, distribution and kind of adatom and the edge structure, while the total linear free carrier density only relies on the first one. These mainly arise from a single $s-2p_z$ orbital hybridization in the adatom-carbon bond. Specifically, zigzag systems can present the anti-ferromagnetic ordering across two edges, ferromagnetic ordering along one edge and non-magnetism, being reflected in the edge-localized energy bands with or without spin splitting. The diverse energy dispersions contribute many special peaks in density of states. The critical chemical bonding and the distinct spin configuration could be verified from the experimental measurements.

The feature-rich electronic excitations of monolayer germanene lie in the significant spin-orbital coupling and the buckled structure. The collective and single- particle excitations are diversified by the magnitude and direction of transferred momentum, the Fermi energy and the gate voltage. There are four kinds of plasmon modes, according to the unique frequency- and momentum-dependent phase diagrams. They behave as two-dimensional acoustic modes at long wavelength. However, for the larger momenta, they might change into another kind of undamped plasmons, become the seriously suppressed modes in the heavy intraband e-h excitations, keep the same undamped plasmons, or decline and then vanish in the strong interband e-h excitations. Germanene, silicene and graphene are quite different from one another in the main features of the diverse plasmon modes.

Essential properties of multilayer graphenes are diversified by the number of layers and the stacking configurations. For an $N$-layer system, Landau levels are divided into $N$ groups, with each identified by a dominant sublattice associated with the stacking configuration. We focus on the main characteristics of Landau levels, including the degeneracy, wave functions, quantum numbers, onset energies, field-dependent energy spectra, semiconductor-metal transitions, and crossing patterns, which are reflected in the magneto-optical spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and quantum transport experiments. The Landau levels in AA-stacked graphene are responsible for multiple Dirac cones, while in AB-stacked graphene the Dirac properties depend on the number of graphene layers, and in ABC-stacked graphene the low-lying levels are related to surface states. The Landau-level mixing leads to anticrossings patterns in energy spectra, which are seen for intergroup Landau levels in AB-stacked graphene, while in particular, a formation of both intergroup and intragroup anticrossings is observed in ABC-stacked graphene. The aforementioned magneto-electronic properties lead to diverse optical spectra, plasma spectra, and transport properties when the stacking order and the number of layers are varied. The magneto-optical properties of simple hexagonal graphite exhibit rich beating oscillations, which are dominated by the field strength and photon energy. The former has a strong effect on the intensity, the energy range of the beating and the number of groups, and the latter modulates the total group numbers of the oscillation structures. The single-particle and collective excitations are simultaneously presented in the magnetoreflectance spectra and can be precisely distinguished. For the loss function and reflectance, the beating pattern of the first group displays stronger intensities and broader energy range than other groups. The low-frequency optical excitations of AA-stacked bilayer graphene are investigated by the tight-binding model. Two groups of asymmetric LLs lead to two kinds of absorption peaks resulting from only intragroup excitations. Each absorption peak obeys a single selection rule similar to that of monolayer graphene. The excitation channel of each peak is changed as the field strength approaches a critical strength. This alteration of the excitation channel is strongly related to the setting of the Fermi level. The peculiar optical properties can be attributed to the characteristics of the LL wave functions of the two LL groups. A detailed comparison of optical properties between AA-stacked and AB-stacked bilayer graphenes is also offered. The compared results demonstrate that the optical properties are strongly dominated by the stacking symmetry. Furthermore, the presented results may be used to discriminate AABG from MG, which can be hardly done by STM.

The low-frequency magneto-optical properties of bilayer Bernal graphene are studied by the tight-binding model with four most important interlayer interactions taken into account. Since the main features of the wave functions are well depicted, the Landau levels can be divided into two groups based on the characteristics of the wave functions. These Landau levels lead to four categories of absorption peaks in the optical absorption spectra. Such absorption peaks own complex optical selection rules and these rules can be reasonably explained by the characteristics of the wave functions. In addition, twin-peak structures, regular frequency-dependent absorption rates and complex field-dependent frequencies are also obtained in this work. The main features of the absorption peaks are very different from those in monolayer graphene and have their origin in the interlayer interactions.

Aerosol chemical components such as black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) regulate aerosol optical properties, which in turn drive the atmospheric radiative forcing estimations due to aerosols. In this study, we used the long-term measurements from AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) to better understand the aerosol types and composition with respect to their seasonal and spatial variabilities in peninsular Southeast Asia (PSEA, here defined as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar). Two methods (i.e., aerosol type cluster and aerosol component retrieval) were applied to determine the aerosol type and chemical composition during the biomass-burning (BB) season. AERONET sites in northern PSEA showed a higher AOD (aerosol optical depth) compared to that of southern PSEA. Differences in land use pattern, geographic location, and weather regime caused much of the aerosol variability over PSEA. Lower single-scattering albedo (SSA) and higher fine-mode fraction (FMF) values were observed in February and March, suggesting the predominance of BB type aerosols with finer and stronger absorbing particles during the dry season. However, we also found that the peak BB month (i.e., March) in northern PSEA may not coincide with the lowest SSA once dust particles have mixed with the other aerosols. Furthermore, we investigated two severe BB events in March of 2014 and 2015, revealing a significant BrC fraction during BB event days. On high AOD days, although the BC fraction was high, the BrC fraction remained low due to lack of aerosol aging. This study highlights the dominance of carbonaceous aerosols in the PSEA atmosphere during the BB season, while also revealing that transported dust particles and BrC aerosol aging may introduce uncertainties into the aerosol radiative forcing calculation.

The low-frequency magneto-optical absorption spectra of bilayer Bernal graphene are studied within the tight-binding model and gradient approximation. The interlayer interactions strongly affect the electronic properties of the Landau levels (LL's), and thus enrich the optical absorption spectra. According to the characteristics of the wave functions, the low-energy LL's can be divided into two groups. This division results in four kinds of optical absorption peaks with complex optical selection rules. Observing the experimental convergent absorption frequencies close to zero magnetic field might be useful and reliable in determining the values of several hopping integrals. East Asia is the most complex region in the world for aerosol studies, as it encounters a lot of varieties of aerosols, and aerosol classification can be a challenge in this region. In the present study, we focused on the relationship between aerosol types and aerosol optical properties. We analyzed the long-term (2005–2012) data of vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients, lidar ratio (Sp), and other aerosol optical properties obtained from a NASA Micro-Pulse Lidar Network and Aerosol Robotic Network site in northern Taiwan, which frequently receives Asian continental outflows. Based on aerosol extinction vertical profiles, the profiles were classified into two types: type 1 (single-layer structure) and type 2 (two-layer structure). Fall season (October–November) was the prevailing season for the Type 1, whereas type 2 mainly happened in spring (March–April). In type 1, air masses normally originated from three regional sectors, i.e., Asia continental (AC), Pacific Ocean (PO), and Southeast Asia (SA). The mean Sp values were 39 ± 17 sr, 30 ± 12 sr, and 38 ± 18 sr for the AC, PO, and SA sectors, respectively. The Sp results suggested that aerosols from the AC sector contained dust and anthropogenic particles, and aerosols from the PO sector were most likely sea salts. We further combined the EPA dust event database and backward trajectory analysis for type 2. Results showed that Sp was 41 ± 14 sr and 53 ± 21 sr for dust storm and biomass-burning events, respectively. The Sp for biomass-burning events in type 2 showed two peaks patterns. The first peak occurred within range of 30–50 sr corresponding to urban pollutant, and the second peak occurred within range of 60–80 sr in relation to biomass burning. Finally, our study summarized the Sp values for four major aerosol types over northern Taiwan, viz., urban (42 ± 18 sr), dust (34 ± 6 sr), biomass-burning (69 ± 12 sr), and oceanic (30 ± 12 sr). Our findings provide useful references for aerosol classification and air pollution identification over the western North Pacific.

Impacts of long-range transported biomass burning aerosols from northern Indochina on regional air quality, atmospheric visibility, and climate effects have been discussed extensively in the literature over the past decade. However, the mechanism between aerosol transport and the low-level jet (LLJ) in synoptic meteorology dynamics (e.g., the frontal system) is still not fully understood. In this study, we present results of aerosol-LLJ interaction based on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Application version 2 (NASA/MERRA-2) dataset simultaneous to field campaigns in spring 2013–2015 over Southeast Asia. For linking the atmospheric circulation to aerosol transport, a general meteorological condition favorable for aerosol transport is demonstrated. Biomass burning aerosol accumulation over the source region (i.e., northern Indochina) coincided with weak westerly system over the northern South China Sea, and as the synoptic weather system evolved, the aerosols were transported to downwind regions (i.e., Taiwan and West Pacific) by a cold front and LLJ dynamics. The MERRA-2 reanalysis data show the postcold front accompanied a LLJ stream at approximately 700 hPa (3 km) and accelerated the haze plume transport eastward with a life cycle of approximately 3–5 days, an event that reoccurred multiple times from March to April. Our results indicate that coexistence of LLJ and a South China Sea anticyclone at 700 hPa, which primarily could drive the mechanism behind these transport events. Furthermore, more observational data from Southeast Asia would greatly benefit studies of aerosol-meteorology interactions in the region.
