Analyzing stop-and-go waves at the scale of miles and hours of data is an emerging challenge in traffic research. In the past, datasets were of limited scale and could be easily analyzed by hand or with rudimentary methods to identify a very limited set of traffic waves present within the data. This paper introduces an automatic and scalable stop-and-go wave identification method capable of capturing wave generation, propagation, dissipation, as well as bifurcation and merging, which have previously been observed only very rarely. Using a concise and simple critical-speed based definition of a stop-and-go wave, the proposed method identifies all wave boundaries that encompass spatio-temporal points where vehicle speed is below a chosen critical speed. The method is built upon a graph-based representation of the spatio-temporal points associated with stop-and-go waves, specifically wave front (start) points and wave tail (end) points, and approaches the solution as a graph component identification problem. The method is implemented in Python and demonstrated on a large-scale dataset, I-24 MOTION INCEPTION. New insights revealed from this demonstration with emerging phenomena include: (a) we demonstrate that waves do generate, propagate, and dissipate at a scale (miles and hours) and ubiquity never observed before; (b) wave fronts and tails travels at a consistent speed for a critical speed between 10-20 mph, with propagation variation across lanes, where wave speed on the outer lane are less consistent compared to those on the inner lane; (c) wave fronts and tails propagate at different speeds; (d) wave boundaries capture rich and non-trivial wave topologies, highlighting the complexity of waves.

Stop-and-go waves are a fundamental phenomenon in freeway traffic flow, contributing to inefficiencies, crashes, and emissions. Recent advancements in high-fidelity sensor technologies have improved the ability to capture detailed traffic dynamics, yet such systems remain scarce and costly. In contrast, conventional traffic sensors are widely deployed but suffer from relatively coarse-grain data resolution, potentially impeding accurate analysis of stop-and-go waves. This article explores whether generative AI models can enhance the resolution of conventional traffic sensor to approximate the quality of high-fidelity observations. We present a novel approach using a conditional diffusion denoising model, designed to reconstruct fine-grained traffic speed field from radar-based conventional sensors via iterative refinement. We introduce a new dataset, I24-WaveX, comprising 132 hours of data from both low and high-fidelity sensor systems, totaling over 2 million vehicle miles traveled. Our approach leverages this dataset to formulate the traffic measurement enhancement problem as a spatio-temporal super-resolution task. We demonstrate that our model can effectively reproduce the patterns of stop-and-go waves, achieving high accuracy in capturing these critical traffic dynamics. Our results show promising advancements in traffic data enhancement, offering a cost-effective way to leverage existing low spatio-temporal resolution sensor networks for improved traffic analysis and management. We also open-sourced our trained model and code to facilitate further research and applications.

The CIRCLES project aims to reduce instabilities in traffic flow, which are naturally occurring phenomena due to human driving behavior. These "phantom jams" or "stop-and-go waves,"are a significant source of wasted energy. Toward this goal, the CIRCLES project designed a control system referred to as the MegaController by the CIRCLES team, that could be deployed in real traffic. Our field experiment leveraged a heterogeneous fleet of 100 longitudinally-controlled vehicles as Lagrangian traffic actuators, each of which ran a controller with the architecture described in this paper. The MegaController is a hierarchical control architecture, which consists of two main layers. The upper layer is called Speed Planner, and is a centralized optimal control algorithm. It assigns speed targets to the vehicles, conveyed through the LTE cellular network. The lower layer is a control layer, running on each vehicle. It performs local actuation by overriding the stock adaptive cruise controller, using the stock on-board sensors. The Speed Planner ingests live data feeds provided by third parties, as well as data from our own control vehicles, and uses both to perform the speed assignment. The architecture of the speed planner allows for modular use of standard control techniques, such as optimal control, model predictive control, kernel methods and others, including Deep RL, model predictive control and explicit controllers. Depending on the vehicle architecture, all onboard sensing data can be accessed by the local controllers, or only some. Control inputs vary across different automakers, with inputs ranging from torque or acceleration requests for some cars, and electronic selection of ACC set points in others. The proposed architecture allows for the combination of all possible settings proposed above. Most configurations were tested throughout the ramp up to the MegaVandertest.

This article introduces a new virtual trajectory dataset derived from the I-24 MOTION INCEPTION v1.0.0 dataset to address challenges in analyzing large but noisy trajectory datasets. Building on the concept of virtual trajectories, we provide a Python implementation to generate virtual trajectories from large raw datasets that are typically challenging to process due to their size. We demonstrate the practical utility of these trajectories in assessing speed variability and travel times across different lanes within the INCEPTION dataset. The virtual trajectory dataset opens future research on traffic waves and their impact on energy.

We demonstrate a new capability of automated vehicles: mixed autonomy traffic control. With this new capability, automated vehicles can shape the traffic flows composed of other non-automated vehicles, which has the promise to improve safety, efficiency, and energy outcomes in transportation systems at a societal scale. Investigating mixed autonomy mobile traffic control must be done in situ given that the complex dynamics of other drivers and their response to a team of automated vehicles cannot be effectively modeled. This capability has been blocked because there is no existing scalable and affordable platform for experimental control. This paper introduces an extensible open-source hardware and software platform, enabling a team of 100 vehicles to execute several different vehicular control algorithms as a collaborative fleet, composed of three different makes and models, which drove 22752 miles in a combined 1022 hours, over 5 days in Nashville, TN in November 2022.

The dissipation of stop-and-go waves attracted recent attention as a traffic management problem, which can be efficiently addressed by automated driving. As part of the 100 automated vehicles experiment named MegaVanderTest, feedback controls were used to induce strong dissipation via velocity smoothing. More precisely, a single vehicle driving differently in one of the four lanes of I-24 in the Nashville area was able to regularize the velocity profile by reducing oscillations in time and velocity differences among vehicles. Quantitative measures of this effect were possible due to the innovative I-24 MOTION system capable of monitoring the traffic conditions for all vehicles on the roadway. This work introduces a multi-camera tracking dataset consisting of 234 hours of video data recorded concurrently from 234 overlapping HD cameras covering a 4.2 mile stretch of 8-10 lane interstate highway near Nashville, TN. The video is recorded during a period of high traffic density with 500+ objects typically visible within the scene and typical object longevities of 3-15 minutes. GPS trajectories from 270 vehicle passes through the scene are manually corrected in the video data to provide a set of ground-truth trajectories for recall-oriented tracking metrics, and object detections are provided for each camera in the scene (159 million total before cross-camera fusion). Initial benchmarking of tracking-by-detection algorithms is performed against the GPS trajectories, and a best HOTA of only 9.5% is obtained (best recall 75.9% at IOU 0.1, 47.9 average IDs per ground truth object), indicating the benchmarked trackers do not perform sufficiently well at the long temporal and spatial durations required for traffic scene understanding.

The Interstate-24 MObility Technology Interstate Observation Network (I-24 MOTION) is a new instrument for traffic science located near Nashville, Tennessee. I-24 MOTION consists of 276 pole-mounted high-resolution traffic cameras that provide seamless coverage of approximately 4.2 miles I-24, a 4-5 lane (each direction) freeway with frequently observed congestion. The cameras are connected via fiber optic network to a compute facility where vehicle trajectories are extracted from the video imagery using computer vision techniques. Approximately 230 million vehicle miles of travel occur within I-24 MOTION annually. The main output of the instrument are vehicle trajectory datasets that contain the position of each vehicle on the freeway, as well as other supplementary information vehicle dimensions and class. This article describes the design and creation of the instrument, and provides the first publicly available datasets generated from the instrument. The datasets published with this article contains at least 4 hours of vehicle trajectory data for each of 10 days. As the system continues to mature, all trajectory data will be made publicly available at i24motion.org/data.

In this paper we propose an automatic trajectory data reconciliation to correct common errors in vision-based vehicle trajectory data. Given "raw" vehicle detection and tracking information from automatic video processing algorithms, we propose a pipeline including (a) an online data association algorithm to match fragments that describe the same object (vehicle), which is formulated as a min-cost network circulation problem of a graph, and (b) a one-step trajectory rectification procedure formulated as a quadratic program to enhance raw detection data. The pipeline leverages vehicle dynamics and physical constraints to associate tracked objects when they become fragmented, remove measurement noises and outliers and impute missing data due to fragmentations. We assess the capability of the proposed two-step pipeline to reconstruct three benchmarking datasets: (1) a microsimulation dataset that is artificially downgraded to replicate upstream errors, (2) a 15-min NGSIM data that is manually perturbed, and (3) tracking data consists of 3 scenes from collections of video data recorded from 16-17 cameras on a section of the I-24 MOTION system, and compare with the corresponding manually-labeled ground truth vehicle bounding boxes. All of the experiments show that the reconciled trajectories improve the accuracy on all the tested input data for a wide range of measures. Lastly, we show the design of a software architecture that is currently deployed on the full-scale I-24 MOTION system consisting of 276 cameras that covers 4.2 miles of I-24. We demonstrate the scalability of the proposed reconciliation pipeline to process high-volume data on a daily basis.

Safe mobility for unmanned ground vehicles requires reliable detection of other vehicles, along with precise estimates of their locations and trajectories. Here we describe the algorithms and system we have developed for accurate trajectory estimation of nearby vehicles using an onboard scanning LADAR. We introduce a variable-axis Ackerman steering model and compare this to an independent steering model. Then for robust tracking we propose a multi-hypothesis tracker that combines these kinematic models to leverage the strengths of each. When trajectories estimated with our techniques are input into a planner, they enable an unmanned vehicle to negotiate traffic in urban environments. Ivanov and Tuzhilin started an investigation of a particular case of Gromov Minimal Fillings problem (generalized to the case of stratified manifolds). Weighted graphs with non-negative weight function were used as minimal fillings of finite metric spaces. In the present paper we introduce generalized minimal fillings, i.e. minimal fillings where the weight function is not necessarily non-negative. We prove that for any finite metric space its minimal filling has the minimum weight in the class of all generalized fillings of the space.

We analyze the high-temperature behavior of the susceptibilities towards a number of possible ordered states in the t-J-V model using the high-temperature series expansion. From all diagrams with up to ten edges, reliable results are obtained down to temperatures of order J, or (with some optimism) to J/2. In the unphysical regime, tJ, these susceptibilities are small and decreasing with decreasing temperature; this suggests that the t-J model does not support high-temperature superconductivity. We also find modest evidence of a tendency toward nematic and d-density wave orders. ERRATUM: Due to an error in the calculation, the series for d-wave supeconducting and extended s-wave superconducting orders were incorrect. We recalculate the series and give the replacement figures. In agreement with our earlier findings, we still find no evidence of any strong enhancement of the superconducting susceptibility with decreasing temperature. We introduce a new model and mechanism of high temperature pairing in stripes. We propose a way to unambiguously test it by numerical simulations. Spontaneous bond dimerization (BD) was cojectured to be central to the physics of the cuperate superconductors. Based on ladder models and numerical simulations, we examine the quantitative issue of whether the energy scales involved are sufficient to influence the mechanisms of pairing, stripe formation, pseudo-gap, and quantum critical `normal' state phenomena. We introduce a new family of one dimensional liquids, which we label as ''Staggered-Liquids'', in the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo-Heisenberg model. It encompasses three distinct spin gapped liquids and a new Luttinger liquid phase. A Staggered Liquid is characterized by gapless modes with ''large fermi-sea'' signature in the charge density wave (CDW) mode, and in that the superconducting order involves the near condensation of charge-2e Cooper pairs with finite center of mass momentum. In particular, the conventional gapless $2k_{F}$ CDW and $k=0$ pairing modes are absent. In the process, we analytically derive the phase transition from an intermediate coupling spin gap phase to the strong coupling gapless LL phase of the Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

For stripes of hole rich lines in doped antiferromagnets, we investigate the competition between anti-phase and in-phase domain wall ground state configurations. We argue that a phase transition must occure as a function of the electron/hole filling fraction of the domain wall. Due to {\em transverse} kinetic hole fluctuations, empty domain walls are always anti-phase. At arbitrary electron filling fraction ($\delta $) of the domain wall (and in particular for $\delta \approx 1/4$ as in LaNdSrCuO), it is essential to account also for the transverse magnetic interactions of the electrons and their mobility {\em along} the domain wall. We find that the transition from anti-phase to in-phase stripe domain wall occurs at a critical filling fraction $0.28<\delta_{c}<0.30$, for any value of $\frac{J}{t}<{1/3}$. We further use our model to estimate the spin-wave velocity in a stripe system. For stripes in doped antiferromagnets, we find that the ratio of spin and charge correlation lenghts, $\xi_{s}/\xi_{c}$, provide a sharp criterion for determining the dominant form of disorder in the system. If stripes disorder is controlled by topological defects then $\xi_{s}/\xi_{c}\lesssim 1$. In contast, if stripes correlations are disordered primarily by non-topological elastic deformations (i.e., a Bragg-Glass type of disorder) then $1<\xi _{s}/\xi_{c}\lesssim 4$ is expected. Therefore, the observation of $\xi _{s}/\xi_{c}\approx 4$ in $(LaNd)_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ and $\xi_{s}/\xi _{c}\approx 3$ in $La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4}$ invariably implies that the stripes are in a Bragg glass type state, and topological defects are much less relevant than commonly assumed. We analyse a model of a one-dimensional electron gas interacting with an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain via the spin exchange interactions. Using a solution at a special limit, we characterize the gapless modes of the spin gap fixed point at weak coupling $ J_{K}\ll J_{H},E_{F} $. we show that the only gapless pairing mode with divergent susceptibility is a composite odd-parity odd-frequency singlet pairing order parameter, while the ordinary BCS even-parity singlet pairing mode is incoherent. For 2-leg ladder systems, we note that it is possible to have a range of doping where the chemical potential cuts only the anti-bonding band while the bonding band remains half-filled. We propose that, in such a state, the 2-leg ladder is effectively realizing the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model., Comment: 4 pages

Following the recent NMR experiments by Gorny et al., we discuss the effect of a magnetic field on the superconducting T_c and the spin pseudo-gap T^*. As a testable prediction, we argue that a spin pseudo-gap should also be observed in over-doped samples in a magnetic fied (while normally there is no pseudo-gap above T_c). The classification of the ground-state phases of complex one-dimensional electronic systems is considered in the context of a fixed-point strategy. Examples are multichain Hubbard models, the Kondo-Heisenberg model, and the one-dimensional electron gas in an active environment. It is shown that, in order to characterize the low-energy physics, it is necessary to analyze the perturbative stability of the possible fixed points, to identify all discrete broken symmetries, and to specify the quantum numbers and elementary wave vectors of the gapless excitations. Many previously-proposed exotic phases of multichain Hubbard models are shown to be unstable because of the ``spin-gap proximity effect.'' A useful tool in this analysis is a new generalization of Luttinger's theorem, which shows that there is a gapless even-charge mode in any incommensurate N-component system., Comment: 15 pages revtex. Mobile holes in an antiferromagnetic insulator form a slowly fluctuating array of quasi one-dimensional metallic stripes, which induce a spin gap or pseudogap in the intervening Mott-insulating regions. The mobile holes on an individual stripe acquire a spin gap via pair hopping between the stripe and its environment; i.e. via a magnetic analog of the usual superconducting proximity effect. This process is the analog of pairing in conventional superconductors. At non-vanishing stripe densities, Josephson coupling between stripes produces a dimensional crossover to a state with long-range superconducting phase coherence. In contrast to conventional superconductors, the superconducting state is characterised by a high density of (spin) pairs, but the phase stiffness, which is determined by the density and mobility of holes on the stripes, is very low., Comment: 4 pages. We consider a Landau theory of coupled charge and spin-density wave order parameters as a simple model for the ordering that has been observed experimentally in the La_2NiO_4 and La_2CuO_4 families of doped antiferromagnets. The period of the charge-density wave is generically half that of the spin-density wave, or equivalently the charges form antiphase domain walls in the antiferromagnetic order. A sharp distinction exists between the case in which the ordering is primarily charge driven (which produces a sequence of transitions in qualitative agreement with experiment) or spin driven (which does not). We also find that stripes with non-collinear spin order (i.e. spiral phases) are possible in a region of the phase diagram where the transition is spin driven; the spiral is circular only when there is no charge order, and is otherwise elliptical with an eccentricity proportional to the magnitude of the charge order., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to PRB

When holes are doped into an antiferromagnetic insulator they form a slowly fluctuating array of ``topological defects'' (metallic stripes) in which the motion of the holes exhibits a self-organized quasi one-dimensional electronic character. The accompanying lateral confinement of the intervening Mott-insulating regions induces a spin gap or pseudogap in the environment of the stripes. We present a theory of underdoped high temperature superconductors and show that there is a {\it local} separation of spin and charge, and that the mobile holes on an individual stripe acquire a spin gap via pair hopping between the stripe and its environment; i.e. via a magnetic analog of the usual superconducting proximity effect. In this way a high pairing scale without a large mass renormalization is established despite the strong Coulomb repulsion between the holes. Thus the {\it mechanism} of pairing is the generation of a spin gap in spatially-confined {\it Mott-insulating} regions of the material in the proximity of the metallic stripes. At non-vanishing stripe densities, Josephson coupling between stripes produces a dimensional crossover to a state with long-range superconducting phase coherence. This picture is established by obtaining exact and well-controlled approximate solutions of a model of a one-dimensional electron gas in an active environment. Results indicate that females had more positive attitudes toward seeking help.
