Kidney transplantation is the most effective renal replacement therapy for end stage renal disease patients. With the severe shortage of kidney supplies and for the clinical effectiveness of transplantation, patient's life expectancy post transplantation is used to prioritize patients for transplantation; however, severe comorbidity conditions and old age are the most dominant factors that negatively impact post-transplantation life expectancy, effectively precluding sick or old patients from receiving transplants. It would be crucial to design objective measures to quantify the transplantation benefit by comparing the mean residual life with and without a transplant, after adjusting for comorbidity and demographic conditions. To address this urgent need, we propose a new class of semiparametric covariate-dependent mean residual life models. Our method estimates covariate effects semiparametrically efficiently and the mean residual life function nonparametrically, enabling us to predict the residual life increment potential for any given patient. Our method potentially leads to a more fair system that prioritizes patients who would have the largest residual life gains. Our analysis of the kidney transplant data from the U.S. Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients also suggests that a single index of covariates summarize well the impacts of multiple covariates, which may facilitate interpretations of each covariate's effect. We propose a new class of semiparametric regression models of mean residual life for censored outcome data. The models, which enable us to estimate the expected remaining survival time and generalize commonly used mean residual life models, also conduct covariate dimension reduction. Using the geometric approaches in semiparametrics literature and the martingale properties with survival data, we propose a flexible inference procedure that relaxes the parametric assumptions on the dependence of mean residual life on covariates and how long a patient has lived. We show that the estimators for the covariate effects are root-$n$ consistent, asymptotically normal, and semiparametrically efficient. With the unspecified mean residual life function, we provide a nonparametric estimator for predicting the residual life of a given subject, and establish the root-$n$ consistency and asymptotic normality for this estimator. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed estimators. Chemical design of SiO2-based glasses with high elastic moduli and low weight is of great interest. However, it is difficult to find a universal expression to predict the elastic moduli according to the glass composition before synthesis since the elastic moduli are a complex function of interatomic bonds and their ordering at different length scales. Here we show that the densities and elastic moduli of SiO2-based glasses can be efficiently predicted by machine learning (ML) techniques across a complex compositional space with multiple (>10) types of additive oxides besides SiO2. Our machine learning approach relies on a training set generated by high-throughput molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, a set of elaborately constructed descriptors that bridges the empirical statistical modeling with the fundamental physics of interatomic bonding, and a statistical learning/predicting model developed by implementing least absolute shrinkage and selection operator with a gradient boost machine (GBM-LASSO). The predictions of the ML model are comprehensively compared and validated with a large amount of both simulation and experimental data. By just training with a dataset only composed of binary and ternary glass samples, our model shows very promising capabilities to predict the density and elastic moduli for k-nary SiO2-based glasses beyond the training set. As an example of its potential applications, our GBM-LASSO model was used to perform a rapid and low-cost screening of many (~105) compositions of a multicomponent glass system to construct a compositional-property database that allows for a fruitful overview on the glass density and elastic properties.

The interactions between solute atoms and crystalline defects such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries play an essential role in determining physical, chemical and mechanical properties of solid-solution alloys. Here we present a universal correlation between two electronic factors and the solute-defect interaction energies in binary alloys of body-centered-cubic (bcc) refractory metals (such as W and Ta) with transition-metal substitutional solutes. One electronic factor is the bimodality of the d-orbital local density of states for a matrix atom at the substitutional site, and the other is related to the hybridization strength between the valance sp- and d-bands for the same matrix atom. Remarkably, the correlation is independent of the types of defects and the locations of substitutional sites, following a linear relation for a particular pair of solute-matrix elements. Our findings provide a novel and quantitative guidance to engineer the solute-defect interactions in alloys based on electronic structures.

We propose a general index model for survival data, which generalizes many commonly used semiparametric survival models and belongs to the framework of dimension reduction. Using a combination of geometric approach in semiparametrics and martingale treatment in survival data analysis, we devise estimation procedures that are feasible and do not require covariate-independent censoring as assumed in many dimension reduction methods for censored survival data. We establish the root-$n$ consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators and derive the most efficient estimator in this class for the general index model. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the empirical performance of the proposed estimators and an application to an AIDS data further illustrates the usefulness of the work., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, a novel mutation operator of differential evolution algorithm is proposed. A new algorithm called divergence differential evolution algorithm (DDEA) is developed by combining the new mutation operator with divergence operator and assimilation operator (divergence operator divides population, and, assimilation operator combines population), which can detect multiple solutions and robustness in noisy environment. The new algorithm is applied to optimize Michalewicz Function and to track changing of rain-induced-attenuation process. The results based on DDEA are compared with those based on Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA). It shows that DDEA algorithm gets better results than DEA does in the same premise. The new algorithm is significant for optimizing and tracking the characteristics of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) channel at millimeter waves., Comment: 4papers
