French food group Tipiak has signed a contract to sell a majority stake to local agri-food cooperative Terrena. The deal is pending review by competition authorities in France. Global demand for fish products has doubled since the 1950s and is still rising. Today more than 40 percent of the world's seafood comes not from wild catches but from land-based and offshore farms. With many wild fisheries already overharvested throughout the world, aquaculture is an important food source — especially for poor countries — and has made seafood more abundant and affordable. But some fish farms pollute surrounding waters, and escaped farm fish compete with wild stocks and spread diseases. Moreover, raising carnivorous fish can use up more fish protein for feed than it produces, further stressing wild fisheries. There are also growing concerns about whether imported seafood is safe to eat and whether the United States regulates fish imports strictly enough. Genetically engineered crops have made their way into most of the food consumed in the United States, and transgenic animals may be next on the dinner plate. The scientific advances could usher in an era of more nutritious food, reduce pesticide use and perhaps even end world hunger, advocates say. But opponents view genetic engineering as one of the most reckless ventures of modern science, threatening to unleash new plant and animal species that could damage both human health and the environment. To guard against such potential calamities, the skeptics want labeling for genetically altered foods and more stringent government regulation and testing. In Europe, edible insects are unusual in food habits. Food neophobia and disgust are considered as major barriers to western entomophagy development. Strategies to improve the consumer acceptance are discussed in the literature but are mainly related to product and individual factors. However, other factors are involved and need attention as contextual factors. Defining the most appropriate context for insect consumption is a milestone in the insect-based food development and the context encompasses a set of parameters: "for which audience", "at which time", "in which place", "in which social environment", etc. A preliminary study was conducted to record the first trends related to this topic by focusing on the timing of insect consumption (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner and between meals) and the style of insect preparation (i.e. main dish, trimming and snack) as well as challenging the questionnaire for further large scale studies. The survey was carried out at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech -- University of Liège (Gembloux, Belgium) with 475 respondents (mean age: 27.62 ± 11.45 years old). Only one respondent did not know that insect could be used as food and many respondents would be willing to eat insects. Insect consumption was already experimented by most respondents but in an uncommon way (i.e. yearly or less frequent) and mainly limited to tasting during special events (e.g., conference). Concerning the context of insect consumption, the breakfast was considered as the less appropriate time to consume insects.
