The article focuses on research drilling program in the Moodies Group of the Barberton Greenstone Belt (BGB). A project was initiated in 2021 to conduct sampling for high-resolution U-Pb dating of detrital zircon in the Ospwagan group. Samples were collected of Manasan formation M1 member conglomerate and sandstone, and M2 member semipelite, as well as a sample of Setting formation sandstone. All known economic Ni-Cu deposits in the Thompson nickel belt are associated with ultramafic bodies hosted in Ospwagan group stratigraphy. Having additional insight into the source region (provenance) and depositional history (age) of the Ospwagan group could help differentiate it from other metasedimentary rocks considered less prospective for Ni exploration. Additional metasedimentary rocks of uncertain affinity were collected for lithogeochemistry from recent roadcuts in the Joey Lake area. The roadcuts are adjacent to a belt of rocks previously identified as undifferentiated Ospwagan group and Archean gneiss. Although somewhat inconclusive, the geochemistry of the metasedimentary rocks appears more similar to Paint sequence than Ospwagan group rocks. The belt of undifferentiated rocks is also reported to contain ultramafic bodies toward the northern terminus. Further study of this belt, the metasedimentary rocks and their potential relationship with ultramafic bodies is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 175-m-thick succession of nonmarine facies of the Prince Creek Formation along the east side of the Toolik River in the Sagavanirktok Quadrangle is interpreted as the deposits of meandering rivers and their associated floodplains. Facies consist of fine- to medium-grained sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, carbonaceous shale, and coal. Depositional environments of the Prince Creek Formation along the Toolik River include meandering river channels, levees, crevasse channels and crevasse splays, lakes, swamps, mires, and soil-forming environments. Sand bodies in the succession exhibit a low degree of interconnectedness and are encased in floodplain deposits. Floodplains were well preserved, extensively vegetated, and wet. Fine-grained successions containing abundant mud, silt, carbonaceous shale, and coal are up to 20 m thick in outcrops along the Toolik River and dominate the stratigraphy. This implies that lakes, marshes, mires, and swamps likely persisted for prolonged periods in this region. The abundance of water-dependent floodplain facies coupled with the presence of isolated sand bodies encased in these finer-grained deposits indicates that the region likely experienced an extended period of elevated base level, possibly as the result of sustained high subsidence rates related to lithospheric loading in the evolving Brooks Range orogenic belt to the south. The article presents a report on the petrographic and routine core-analysis data and provides preliminary interpretations on them. Two hundred seventeen model analyses and 188 routine core analyses were conducted on Tertiary and Mesozoic siltstones and sandstones gathered during the 2007-2010 field seasons from 6 geographic areas in upper and lower Cook Inlet, Alaska. It indicates that the observations are based on a limited number of outcrop samples gathered from a widely dispersed localities.
