This book review symposium aims to open a space for discussions and questions responded to the book Education between Speech and Writing: Crossing the Boundaries of Dao and Deconstruction, which is published in 2018. The symposium is composed of four articles by four authors. They are "Introduction" by the author of the book; Morimichi Kato's "Writing, History, and Playfulness: A dialogical review of Ruyu Hung's Education Between Speech and Writing: Crossing the Boundaries of Dao and Deconstruction"; Xu Di's "Think Beyond Dichotomy: Discussant paper on Education Between Speech & Writing by Dr. Ruyu Hung"; and Chia-Ling Wang's "Buddhist unconsciousness: A language beyond phonocentrism and graphocentrism in postgraphocentric education". In the mid-1920s the poet W. B. Yeats was pleased to discover contemporary philosophers, Giovanni Gentile and A. N. Whitehead, whose metaphysical and educational philosophies seemed to coincide with his own commitments. Whitehead shares with Gentile a sense of reality as activity and an understanding of knowledge as constructed from abstractions that are open to evaluation and imaginative reconfiguration. Yeats was a Senator of the Irish Free State and took an interest in schooling. Soon after visiting a Montessori-inspired girls' school in Waterford, he began his poem 'Among School Children". I argue that an awareness of the philosophical ideas Yeats had recently encountered should encourage restless rather than fixed interpretations of the poem and that this sense of restlessness and imaginative reconfiguration reflects the approach to education the three writers, at that time, shared: that at best our modes of apprehension provide only glimpses of reality and therefore each child's understanding and learning must be kept moving. Arts Research: Innovative Practices, a postgraduate course introduced at The University of Auckland in 2012, is attractive to students from across the arts disciplines and educational sectors wishing to engage in arts-based educational research. The course entices students to critically explore emerging visions and theoretical concepts that broaden research practices in the arts through approaches such as narrative, autobiography, performative ethnography, reader’s theatre, poetic inquiry, and a/r/tography. Emphasis is placed on the ‘visual’ as a powerful research tool. In this paper, an example of a Master of Education (MEd) thesis by Meng-Jiun Penny Lin (2015) offers a ‘snapshot’ of insights into how research in more than one arts discipline can be creatively conceptualised, conducted and reported in innovative ways. Alba and Foner’s volume is an important contribution to the transatlantic dialog. In the paper I especially focus on the presented labour market outcomes in the first generation and the accomplishments of the second generation in education. What do these outcomes tell us about integration and assimilation patterns across countries? Alba and Foner’s overall conclusion is that neither the theory of national integration models nor the theory of settler versus non-settler societies can explain the differences or similarities in outcomes across the six assessed countries. These theories, according to Alba and Foner, are debunked when empirically tested. I try to formulate what alternative explanations can be formulated based on the empirical data. Differences in historical institutional arrangements in education and the labour market can more accurately predict outcomes. Also differences in the dynamics between the mainstream population and immigrant groups in North America versus Western Europe are important. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Widening Implementation and Demonstration of Evidence Based Reforms (WIDER) is a campus-wide, NSF-funded effort to create institutional change in the way we teach core gateway STEM courses. While instruction and course reform has historically been attempted by lone rangers to little lasting effect, WIDER's paradigm is to organize instructors into Communities of Practice (CoPs) to provide mutual support and training, and to encourage and facilitate the organic dissemination of best practices across courses among the members of the community of practice. In particular, mentorship relationships within the community have provided ready avenues for the translation of best practices. In this paper, we describe and analyze the redesign of one such course in the WIDER community, highlighting how the redesign of this course was informed by its involvement within this larger community of practice. This is a long review of a long book, the longest to my knowledge on what educational aims and the curriculum that flows from them should be. The first half of the review is devoted to a brief summary of each of the eleven chapters. The second half raises some critical points. These cover remarks about R.S. Peters' alleged traditionalism; the salience of climate change considerations among educational aims; the claim that the arts, like the sciences, make progress; seeing the elements of morality as a toolbox. The longest critical discussion is about Kitcher's notion of human fulfillment and whether he is right in his view that we should see it in terms of a successful life-plan aimed at furthering 'the human project'. A growing interest has been witnessed in analysing second language (L2) learner motivation in English as an Additional Language (EAL) instruction around the world. Despite extensive scholarship in this area, revisiting learner motivation is warranted due to some unprecedented developments that impact EAL teaching, such as the prevalence of World Englishes, ethno-linguistically diverse classrooms, and the social as well as situated nature of teaching and learning. The aim of this article is to expand on Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System framework to inform classroom instruction in globally growing EAL teaching. The expansion entails three sociocultural dimensions in the EAL classroom: diversity, inclusivity, and entitlement. This expanded framework can potentially equip EAL educators to better address the demands of a rapidly changing world. Moreover, the framework can also serve as an impetus for learner success in EAL classrooms and the recognition of their individual characteristics, such as self-regulation, autonomy, and agency, which are highly emphasized in postmodern L2 pedagogy.
