The article analyzes the increase in lynchings in Mexico during a period of decreasing lethal violence due to homicides. Questions are raised about the relationship between popular approval of lynchings and support for the death penalty, as well as the meanings associated with this form of violence. Gema Kloppe-Santamaría's book proposes that the presence of the State was a triggering factor for lynchings, as state agents were perceived as incapable of providing justice.
