David Macarthur, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Sydney, has edited a fine volume of papers by Hilary and Ruth Anna Putnam on American pragmatism. Originally a philosopher of science, Ruth Anna did not develop an interest in American pragmatism until the 1970s, after which she made herself a major scholar, in particular of James, editing the 1997 I Cambridge Companion to William James i (Putnam [20]). They were followed by Hilary's 1988 "James's Theory of Perception" - which began with the apologetic, "Although William James is usually thought of as a "literary" philosopher" (in Putnam [12], 232). In the mid-1990s came a spate of related papers, notably two joint projects, the 1996 "What the Spilled Beans Can Spell: The Difficult and Deep Realism of William James" (Macarthur, chap. 10) and the 1998 "The Real William James: Response to Robert Myers" (Macarthur, chap. 17).
