This is a review essay of printed editions of the correspondence of John Flamsteed, Jan Jonston and John Wallis, and of the CD—ROM edition of the Hartlib Papers. It raises various issues concerning the relationship between editions of correspondence and their archival base, and about the criteria used to decide what is appropriate to include as ‘correspondence’. It also addresses the rationale of the electronic edition of the Hartlib Papers, particularly the second edition, which extends its remit from the main archive at Sheffield to include a selection of ancillary material from other collections, questioning whether the effort involved would have been better employed in improving the basic resource. It then considers the use of electronic media in editing more generally, using the edition of Galileo’s notes on motion to illustrate the potential for intensive editorial intervention in a text, in contrast to the more extensive method used in the Hartlib edition, and thereby drawing attention to some of the attitudes that electronic editing is prone to induce. The volume begins with Jonathan Ben-Dov's article on the continuity between the Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and this is an appropriate introductory chapter to the entire volume. In the last paper of the volume, Werman adds more complexity to the divergent apocalyptic worldviews found in the Qumran writings by analyzing the apocalyptic worldviews of Jubilees. This volume is an excellent collection of papers touching on various religious worldviews reflected in the Dead Sea Scrolls, especially as they show both the affinity and dissimilarity between the biblical and post-biblical Jewish and Christian traditions. This paper examines Im Sun-deuk's two short stories, "Iryoil" (Sunday, 1937) and "Nazuke oya" (A Godmother, 1942). Im, an active participant in Korea's socialist movement in the 1930s, turned to literature as her career at a time when Japanese colonial authorities had tightened their control over Korea to further the Japanese empire's colonial expansion into China. In the process, the Japanese implemented an assimilation policy to mobilize the Korean people into the Japanese war effort. By employing the concept of confession in "Iryoil'' and "Nazuke oya," Im projects an autobiographical self onto her protagonists, both of whom are modern women striving to preserve their identities as socially conscious intellectuals committed to nationalism, socialism, and feminism. By positioning her protagonists as confessors to other characters in the texts, Im's short stories portray intellectuals in colonial Korea as in conflict or harmony with her protagonists. Im's protagonists embody female subjects who find a new kind of womanhood under Japanese colonial rule. However, in "Nazuke oya," Im's protagonist displays a more flexible and open attitude toward Koreans with attitudes and beliefs different from her own. In this sense, the act of confession as presented in Im's texts is an attempt to build a bond and sense of community among the Korean people from a woman's perspective, and at a time when Korean identity risked becoming obsolete. The Introduction by Professor Classen, eminent in Mediaeval and Germanic Studies and editor of I Mediaevistik i , is by far the longest contribution (108 pp., including 73 pp. summarizing others' contributions), and I will mainly focus on it for this assessment in the light of the other articles. Yet Classen himself has tended to lapse into simplicity by reducing problematic magic to "necromancy" (esp. pp. 17, 19, 27, 79-50, 64-65, 105), which is not indexed and for him apparently means sorcery in general, and only receives its generic Latinization as I nigromantia i and its clearest definition as demon-conjuring "black magic" by Claire Fanger's paper (at p. 478). As theoretical background to the book, I notice that the whole book puts us in touch with the new titles on Western magic. [Extracted from the article]

This paper discusses the Taiwanese woman poet Ye Hong 葉紅's poems about death, attempting to articulate her perspective on death and what it means in her poetry. Based on her poetry linking psychiatric treatment with death writing, this paper further explains how the poet employs the imagery of death and poetry writing as an escape from life crisis. In the case of Ye Hong, literature as psychiatric treatment did serve to soothe her melancholia and prevent her from losing her capability of speaking. At the same time, she also attempted to save herself by writing about death, that is, by sublimating the death drive by incessantly refashioning the signs of death in her poems. Ye’s death, however, indicates the impossibility of redemption through writing: poetry can never be a substitute for medical treatment. Nevertheless, considering the eternal value of literary work, we may conclude that literature is Ye’s afterlife, through which readers can overcome her physical death by returning again and again to her narrative of death before she died. The paper focuses on W. B. Yeats's idea of literary culture as it was theorised in his early essays and articles, with a particular attention directed to Ideas of Good and Evil and uncollected reviews spanning the last decade of the XIX century. It is argued here that Yeats projects his vision of a society as organised around poetic symbols that percolate down to the people like in ancient oral cultures. Instead of a politically-motivated and prejudiced nationalist ideology, Yeats proposes a religion of art that demands both a serious belief in the mystical insight conveyed by poetry and a constant questioning of this insight which is based on the notion that the true meaning of symbol cannot be fully understood. Thus Yeats's project of the literary culture is shown to have been pitched against the prevalent XIX century Irish nationalist dogmas that were promoted by old-school writers and political activists in the like of Charles Gavan Duffy. The present work offers an analysis of a literary text from a discourse perspective. The text has been approached using concepts from the Systemic Functional Linguistics developed by M.A.K. Halliday (1985). We further base our analysis on Susan Eggins' classification of lexical relations (1994). The aim of this paper is to make a linguistic analysis of the short story "Breakfast for Enrique" by Irish writer Colum McCann, to uncover how the identity of its protagonist is built up. This is achieved by scrutinizing the author's lexical choices and by exploring how these acquire meaning within a given socio-cultural context. This article discusses the literary career of poet Robert Lowell and his works. Near the middle of Robert Lowell's For the Union Dead, a new trope appears, one that will continue in several successive books, particularly those whose poems are often presented as daily notes--Notebook 1967-68, Notebook, History, For Lizzie and Harriet, and The Dolphin. Following the poems of optical, epidermal, and neural sensitivity--Night Sweat, The Lesson, The Neo-Classical Urn, and Eye and Tooth--come poems of travel in which journeys appear as new contexts for that sensitization: Going To and Fro, Returning, Buenos Aires, and Dropping South: Brazil, present the strained, introspective speaker of Lowell's breakthrough phase, introduced in Life Studies, as increasingly vulnerable to and destabilized by the duress of travel. The rhetoric becomes murkier, the speaker more disoriented, as he moves from his center of gravity in New England. In Lowell, the disorientation of travel became a metaphor for, if not often a cause of, the disorientation of psychological illness. From this phase until the end of Lowell's life, travel was a texture used to generate fractured narratives of the troubled traveler's ego.
