Chantal Akerman is a hero of the avant-garde cinema. Her most famous film, ''Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai de Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles'' (1975), devotes more than three hours to observing a woman's domestic routines before climaxing in, as accounts regularly put it, ''an act of shocking violence.'' Since 1995 Ms. Akerman has been experimenting with video installations and exhibiting her work in museums and galleries as well as in art-house theaters. Now a traveling exhibition at M.I.T.'s List Visual Arts Center offers a good opportunity to assess what she has been up to over the last decade. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
