The paper analyses the work of fiction by author, producer, and actor Brit Marling in the context of posthumanism and ecofeminism and in dialogue with philosopher and posthumanist theorist Rosi Braidotti. Co-creator of three movies and a TV series, Marling has emerged as a unique and distinctive voice in speculative fiction in the last decade, proposing narratives that examine the role of the human being in a changing world, the importance of relationality, and the need for intra/interspecies and human-earth connections to counter some of the major plagues of our time. The paper highlights how Marling's work and voice represent not only another step away from the postfeminist era in media and popular culture, but also a defining and innovative look at new forms of media and story-telling and feminist thinking in pop-culture. Serene Khader's recent book Decolonizing Universalism is an important contribution to a number of strands of thought, activism, and scholarship. It is also an ambitious one: the book sets out a tall order for itself. On the one hand, it is an intellectual contribution to the thought and practice of transnational feminism, specifically. This paper aims to draw out lessons from the book by focusing on two of the secondary points Khader makes. The first is her response to gender complementarianism, the second critically responds to her discussion of social progress towards justice. The latter inspires a critical question for Khader and her readers: how can we square the criticism of the lack of attention to cultural context exhibited by 'missionary feminists' with critical attention to the context that produced their inattention? Foregrounding the voices of minority women in England, Scotland and France, Minority Women and Austerity provides a rich and compelling account of austerity’s lived effects. Through its intersectional analyses and historically attendant frame, the book locates minority women’s experiences of austerity not as fundamentally “new” but rather as an extension and sharpening of conditions of “routinized crisis” and inequality. In doing so it compels its readers to ask: whose crisis counts? In this review paper, I summarize the book’s key contributions. In particular, I discuss the book’s theorizations of “political racelessness” to critique the erasure of minority women’s experiences and activism. I reflect on what this means for those researching austerity and its deleterious effects, and for those participating in anti-austerity activism. I end by discussing the analytical tools that the book offers for interrogating the Left’s response to on-going austerity within a post-Brexit Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complaining can feel like a shameful secret, and keeping it behind closed doors is, Ahmed shows, a deliberate strategy used by universities to prevent a record of resistance being made by feminist complainers (7). i records the affective and atmospheric shifts that complainers in universities have been subjected to; Ahmed has mapped connections between otherwise atomised experiences. i is, as Ahmed hopes, "a reminder: we are not alone" (277) and the creative, leaky, overflowing, hopeful, hopeless complaint activism will continue to haunt universities, a "slow inheritance" (310) that surely will, eventually, be realised. In going behind the closed doors of complaint, Ahmed brings to light the processes and experiences that complainers in universities share, showing how institutional power crystallizes not only at the institutional scale, but the interpersonal.
