Unlike Wajda's, however, Gustafsson's preferred landscape is (almost) unpopulated, silent, deformed ("stained, striated, bruised or rubbed", p. 255), enigmatic and challenging to read, as it often presents an "inscrutable evidence of an unfathomable crime" (p. 4). Those who expect this book, on the strength of its title, to engage with film thrillers and police photography, will be in for a disappointment. For Gustafsson, the two parts of Mitchell's assertion seem to be a non-sequitur, as (Gustafsson counterclaims) landscape 'has assumed a new critical role precisely because its time has passed' (p. 20). The debate over whether 'fair-play' can serve as a justification for legal punishment has recently resumed with an exchange between Richard Dagger and Antony Duff. According to the fair-play theorist, criminals deserve punishment for breaking the law because in so doing the criminal upsets a fair distribution of benefits and burdens, and punishment rectifies this unfairness. Critics frequently level two charges against this idea. The first is that it often gives the wrong explanation of what makes crime deserving of punishment, since the wrongfulness of murder is not primarily about unfairness. The second is that it implies that all crimes deserve the same degree of punishment, because all crimes create the same degree of unfairness. These objections are viewed as revealing fatal flaws in the theory. Although Dagger attempts to meet these objections by drawing on political theory, Duff responds that this still draws upon the wrong kind of resources for meeting these objections. This paper argues that these two objections rest on a crucial mistake that has been overlooked by both the defenders and critics of fairplay. This mistake results from failing to distinguish between what justifies punishment as a response to crime (which requires a common element to all crime) and what justifies attaching particular penalties to crimes (which requires making distinctions in the severity of crime). The prevention of criminal potential in individuals is of enormous importance given the immense human and financial costs to society of criminal behavior. Consequently, there have been hundreds of studies of various kinds of developmental prevention programs for delinquency, and it has been proposed that the time is now to scale up some of these programs into large-scale national strategies for reducing crime. The author challenges this suggestion by first discussing the standards for judging the efficacy and effectiveness of these programs with a focus on the essential standards of replication and long-term follow-up. Next, the author examines the evidence base supporting the success of these programs and found it insufficient to justify the scale-up of any existing program. The author concludes with a recommendation for a paradigm shift for preventing delinquency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I had no idea what her name was until recently - and the photograph used to instill in me anger and horror because I assumed that Ut's photograph came at the expense of Kim Phúc's life. But it may also be that the section on I The Crime Museum Uncovered i seems unfulfilling because, although Biber describes the exhibition as telling a story of crime and police investigation (the words "story" and "narrate" are peppered in these pages of the chapter), it feels as if Biber missed an opportunity to engage with narrative criminology. Given the scope of Chapter 7 and its consideration of violations of international humanitarian law, I had hoped that Biber might have contemplated some of the images mentioned at the outset of this review, such as the photographs by Adams, Browne and Ut. "That picture will always serve as a reminder of the unspeakable evil of which humanity is capable", Kim Phúc writes, but Ut's actions after taking the photograph and Kim Phúc's resiliency in the ensuing decades inspire some hope for humanity - which stands in contrast to the image by itself. The article discusses the book "Fundamentals of Objective Psychology," by J.F. Dashiell. "Psychology should form a science basic to the social sciences," says Dashiell in his book. Few, if any, social scientists would deny this assertion, but many of them act as though psychology were a subject of negligible importance. A physicist who had not studied higher mathematics or a biologist who had never taken a class in chemistry would be an object of academic ridicule. Not so with the social scientists; many of them are quite untrained in psychology, although admitting it to be a subject matter fundamental to their own specialties and rendering it at least a perfunctory verbal homage. This is a regrettable situation, but not a surprising one. Until quite recently psychologists had little of value to contribute to the sociologist, the political scientist, or the economist. Some psychologists and their followers gave impetus to the rapid development of psychology by their experiments describing and analyzing the structure of the mind but they contributed remarkably little to the social sciences. The physiology of the eye or the characteristics of a sound wave did not greatly interest those who were struggling to arrive at some understanding of crime or poverty or political disorganization.
