Although they recognize that the effects of globalization are not felt uniformly in different parts of the world and that the levels of resistance to neoliberal austerity vary, they trace the proliferation of anti-austerity movements to the spread of neoliberal restructuring in countries of the global North and South alike. Discussing the decades-long history of anti-neoliberal revolts throughout the capitalist world, the authors argue that contemporary anti-austerity movements themselves are responses to the threats to people's living and environmental conditions that neoliberal globalization entails. Coalitions and political movements brings together ten careful empirical studies of the origins, growth, decline, and results of the Nuclear Weapons Freeze campaign in the U.S. The Freeze campaign began in March of 1981, flourished for a few years, and then went into eclipse after 1984. At its height in June of 1982, the Freeze mobilized a march of 750,000 people against nuclear arms in New York's Central Park during the United Nations' Second Special Session on Disarmament and delivered a total of 2,139,499 signatures of U.S. citizens in support of a bilateral nuclear freeze to the U.S. and Soviet missions to the United Nations Organization. The new social movements approach explains the rise of social movements and the formation of dissident identity among activists as a result of profound historical changes, which generate new values. The resource mobilization approach treats the general public as a source of a supply of grievances, as well as a source of funding, volunteer time, and other resources. Activist entrepreneurs draw upon these resources to build popular support for the movements they themselves organize.

The article focuses on two books "Money and Change: Social Movement Philanthropy at Haymarket People's Fund," by Susan A. Ostrander, and "Looking Good and Doing Good: Corporate Philanthropy and Corporate Power," by Jerome L. Himmelstein. Books like those of Ostrander and Himmelstein offer opportunities for considering how and why people give money away and with what effect. But they also offer the glimpse of larger issues: possibilities for social change; resistance to and support for the status quo and, for students of work and occupations, the development of new careers. Ostrander focuses, as her subtitle indicates, on how progressive and social reform ideas have emerged in social movement philanthropy at one location. Ostrander's major argument, based on Haymarket's grant making practice, is that the risk of undue influence from donors can be mitigated through the way movement philanthropy is socially organized. Himmelstein has set his research project within the framework of corporate politics in general and so he examines the problems that corporations become emerged in when they give money away.
