Strikingly, the court did not acknowledge any of the human rights-based legal arguments submitted by the defence, which leads Peterson to conclude that the court was sympathetic to an "Islamist majoritarian" construction of human rights law. For Peterson, the trial provides an opportunity to assess whether Indonesia's liberal democratic human rights legal framework can withstand the rise of growing Islamist majoritarian sentiment. As the "most extreme triumph of majoritarian politics in Asia", Kingston discusses the violent persecution and ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya, a Muslim minority in Myanmar (p. 160). In fact, Kingston's concluding remarks have significant implications to non-Asian societies as well: "Denying a voice in mainstream politics to the angry and alienated is not a sustainable solution to maintain that system or the integrity of the political process.
