Abraham Maslow used "Toward a Humanistic Biology," published in 1969, to present his future vision of the challenges humankind would face in the growing isolation of persons from each other and themselves. Depersonalization, polarization, and loneliness amid the state of post-pandemic, mid-culture war, warring nations, plagues of economic hardship, racism, nationalism, immigration rejection, and wading deep into a climate cataclysm may cast people out of their societies, or, alternately, huddled alone within them. Ultimately, political power dictates outcomes, as Maslow points out, along with the fate of the world. In this brief commentary on Abraham Maslow's (1969) Toward a Humanistic Biology, it is argued that Maslow's engagement with life science was a way for him to highlight the importance of innovative research for the development of third-force psychology. The way Maslow envisioned psychology as involving two forms of objectivity indicate that had he been steeped in phenomenology, he likely would have endorsed a hermeneutic-phenomenological vision of science. Thus, in explicating how May's outlook differed from that of most European existentialists, Abzug observed, (May) made no apologies for what he admitted was an American bias toward 'our concern with helping anyone who suffers, quixotic though that may seem at times'. Making use of unfettered access that May allotted to his personal diaries, Abzug is also convincing in portraying how May's lifelong difficulties with romantic love and intimacy originated in family-of-origin problems with his emotionally unstable mother and older sister. Background: The PERMA Model, as a positive psychology conceptual framework, has increased our understanding of the role of Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievements in enhancing human potentials, performance and wellbeing. We aimed to assess the utility of PERMA as a multidimensional model of positive psychology in reducing physician burnout and improving their well-being. Methods: Eligible studies include peer-reviewed English language studies of randomized control trials and non-randomized design. Attending physicians, residents, and fellows of any specialty in the primary, secondary, or intensive care setting comprised the study population. Eligible studies also involved positive psychology interventions designed to enhance physician well-being or reduce physician burnout. Using free text and the medical subject headings we searched CINAHL, Ovid PsychINFO, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar (GS) electronic bibliographic databases from 2000 until March 2020. We use keywords for a combination of three general or block of terms (Health Personnel OR Health Professionals OR Physician OR Internship and Residency OR Medical Staff Or Fellow) AND (Burnout) AND (Positive Psychology OR PERMA OR Wellbeing Intervention OR Well-being Model OR Wellbeing Theory). Results: Our search retrieved 1886 results (1804 through CINAHL, Ovid PsychINFO, MEDLINE, and 82 through GS) before duplicates were removed and 1723 after duplicates were removed. The final review included 21 studies. Studies represented eight countries, with the majority conducted in Spain (n = 3), followed by the US (n = 8), and Australia (n = 3). Except for one study that used a bio-psychosocial approach to guide the intervention, none of the other interventions in this review were based on a conceptual model, including PERMA. However, retrospectively, ten studies used strategies that resonate with the PERMA components. Conclusion: Consideration of the utility of PERMA as a multidimensional model of positive psychology to guide interventions to reduce burnout and enhance well-being among physicians is missing in the literature. Nevertheless, the majority of the studies reported some level of positive outcome regarding reducing burnout or improving well-being by using a physician or a system-directed intervention. Albeit, we found more favorable outcomes in the system-directed intervention. Future studies are needed to evaluate if PERMA as a framework can be used to guide system-directed interventions in reducing physician burnout and improving their well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In their precise and detailed introduction, Campana and Maisano address the recent scholarly literature on posthumanism to show that works such as N. Katherine Hayles' I How We Became Posthuman i (1999), Cary Wolfe's I What is Posthumanism? As Campana and Maisano point out: we can find companion species, systems theories, and critiques of anthropocentrism I in the very same works i that, for Wolfe and others, serve as the exemplars of Renaissance humanism and early modernity. I am extremely sympathetic to Campana's and Maisano's approach in I Renaissance Posthumanism i , but I want to consider the issues they raise in light of Latour's claim that the debunking impulse of critique is predicated on the postulation of privileged ( I viz i ., human) access to a true world lying behind a mystifying veil of ideological appearances (Latour [19], 475). This article is intended to discuss the issue of argumentation in Mencius in the form of book review, focusing on Haiwen Yang's newly released monograph The World of Mencius. Unlike many scholars who are inclined to see the argumentations included in the book of Mencius in the light of logical debate, Yang attempts to embed Mencius in his social network, so as to reconstruct a "vivid" and "real" Mencius as lived in his own historical context. Yang's narrative is characterized by an emphasis on the interaction between the two lines of thought in Mencius, namely "moral idealism" and "cultural conformity." In line with Yang's interpretation of Mencius, our reading of Yang and of Mencius focuses on the hermeneutic circumstance in which Mencius' argumentation came into existence, as a result of that, the political significance as well as humanistic concern in relation to Mencius' eloquence and his argumentative character will be particularly addressed.
