Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive malignancy that accounts for about 14% of all lung cancers. Platinum-based chemotherapy has been the only available treatment for a long time, until the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) recently changed first-line standard of care and shed light on the pivotal role of the immune system. Despite improved survival in a subset of patients, a lot of them still do not benefit from first-line chemo-immunotherapy, and several studies are investigating whether different combination strategies (with both systemic and local treatments, such as radiotherapy) may improve patient outcomes. Moreover, research of biomarkers that may be used to predict patients' outcomes is ongoing. In addition to ICIs, immunotherapy offers other different strategies, including naked monoclonal antibodies targeting tumor associated antigens, conjugated antibody, bispecific antibodies and cellular therapies. In this review, we summarize the main evidence available about the use of immunotherapy in SCLC, the rationale behind combination strategies and the studies that are currently ongoing in this setting, in order to give the reader a clear and complete view of this rapidly expanding topic. Increasing global population has resulted in increased urbanization of coastal areas across the globe. Such an increase generates many challenges for sustainable food production and food security. The development of aquaculture has proven to be an extremely good option to ensure food security (uninterrupted supply and good quality of food) by many countries, especially those with urban areas affected by space limitations such as Singapore. However, the implementation of aquaculture is not without its challenges and impacts to the environment, with Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) being one of the major concerns in coastal waters. In this review we analyze the development of the aquaculture industry with respect to HABs in Singapore and compare it to similar urban areas such as Hong Kong (SAR China), Salalah (Oman), Cape Town (South Africa), Valencia (Spain), Rotterdam (The Netherlands), Tampa bay (USA), Vancouver (Canada), and Sydney (Australia). Along with HABs, the abovementioned urban areas face different challenges in sustainably increasing their aquaculture production with respect to the economy and geography. This review further assesses the different production and monitoring strategies that have been implemented to counter these challenges while sustainably increasing production. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world with lockdowns and border closures resulting in logistical difficulties in seafood trade which has further accentuated the dependencies on food import. We conclude that the challenges faced by urban areas for sustainable achievement of food security through development of the aquaculture industry can be effectively managed through proper planning, management and collaboration of knowledge/skills on an international level. The incidence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is increasing worldwide. Although the PD hallmark is the motor impairments, nonmotor dysfunctions are now becoming more recognized. Recently, studies have suggested that baroreflex dysfunction is one of the underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular dysregulation observed in patients with PD. However, the large body of literature on baroreflex function in PD is unclear. The baroreflex system plays a major role in the autonomic, and ultimately blood pressure and heart rate, adjustments that accompany acute cardiovascular stressors on a daily basis. Therefore, impaired baroreflex function (i.e., decreased sensitivity or gain) can lead to altered neural cardiovascular responses. Since PD affects parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system and both are orchestrated by the baroreflex system, understanding of this crucial mechanism in PD is necessary. In the present review, we summarize the potential altered central and peripheral mechanisms affecting the feedback-controlled loops that comprise the reflex arc in patients with PD. Major factors including arterial stiffness, reduced number of C1 and activation of non-C1 neurons, presence of central α-synuclein aggregation, cardiac sympathetic denervation, attenuated muscle sympathetic nerve activity, and lower norepinephrine release could compromise baroreflex function in PD. Results from patients with PD and from animal models of PD provide the reader with a clearer picture of baroreflex function in this clinical condition.
