A pilot study conducted at the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Europe introduced a virtual assistant named ERIC (Endoscopy Robot for Intelligent Chat) to assist patients undergoing endoscopic examinations. ERIC is an AI-powered chatbot that uses Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning technologies to answer patient questions in real-time. The study found that ERIC was able to autonomously manage 94% of patient questions, reducing the time spent by nurses on communication from 40 hours to 15 hours per week. Additionally, the number of cancelled procedures due to poor patient preparation decreased from 22 to 7 per week. Patient feedback on the virtual assistant experience was positive, with 63% rating the service as excellent. The study concludes that implementing a similar system in high-volume endoscopy services could be beneficial for both patients and hospital staff. [Extracted from the article]
