In medieval and early modern Hungary property disputes and documentation of ownership were handled by ecclesiastical offices in each diocese. Most of them had local authority, while a few had authority throughout the realm. The volume reviewed here contains conference papers analyzing the activities of these notarial offices over the centuries. Forms of these official documents changed very little from 1181 to 1599, the period discussed by the papers. The slow introduction of Hungarian words and sentences into the Latin text is one change, and the employment of lower-level clergy, besides the chapter’s members, is the other. These official documents give an in-depth view of property management and economic relations in medieval times.
