One of the most important contributions of the book is that it replaces the old epithets of "gradually or rapidly varied" flow for the more meaningful non-hydrostatic flow Nevertheless, the authors do not limit themselves to that change, but they explore to an overwhelming extent the intricacies of free surface hydraulics. After a brilliant general introduction, the second chapter presents the vertically-integrated equations, including the effects of curved beds, friction, enhanced gravity and sediment transport.
