This review discusses the rise and nature of the 'new popular geography', a genre exemplified by Vitali Vitaliev's engaging new work Atlas of Geographical Curiosities. The attraction to 'curious' places, along with remote, hidden and 'off the map' places, is explored in the context of the growth of anxieties about surveillance and 'placelessness' as well as the emergence of mapping as a central social and personal technology. I also consider what such works mean for geography as an academic discipline. Over forthcoming decades, the new popular geography is well-placed to shape the meaning of geography and, hence, we must ask how academic geographers can respond and engage with this genre. Audio archives are a unique tool that have helped geographers further their spatial analyses of the world. Through listening to voices from the past, the historical geographies of places are revealed and can, then, be used to better understand the numerous narratives that shape a location. But what happens if we take these recordings and reinterpret them, using an artistic lens? Can we create fresh and alternative ways of displaying and doing cultural geography? In this short essay, I demonstrate how I used selected audio archives which discussed the formative years of the life of Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, to create a video map which combines past and present representations of the city of Swansea, Wales, to reimagine the archives for a 21st-century audience. Though Sills sometimes distinguishes cartography and map, as when he interprets Bunyan's map of salvation and damnation as showing that maps must be read allegorically, not "done away with altogether", he still ends up against the map tout court, concluding that Bunyan's neighborly spaces are "not reducible to a map" (40-1). For example, in a powerful chapter on Aphra Behn's I Oroonoko i , Sills insists on the inseparability of Atlantic cartography and the slave trade, arguing that Behn understood and criticized this link.
