Web-based services can allow administrators to efficiently and easily access necessary data, as well as provide easy access points for those administering education plans and other services, for individual student reporting and broad-based efficiency of the school's student services. In addition to overall special education reporting, schools are also required to maintain records on student behavior problems in order to ensure a safe school environment. If authorized personnel in the school system have access to a Web-based program, they can use the same recording criteria and enter the information just once. This provides a repository of information on a student. With the right Web-based program, administrators can start to observe patterns in students' behaviors. This allows them to work with teachers and parents to help students modify the behaviors before the student falls into difficult times.

This paper considers the use of Dana, a Palm operating-system based laptop alternative in a science classroom. The combination of Dana and science probeware from companies such as ImagiWorks and Vernier creates a dynamic learning experience. Dana's light weight of only eight pounds, ruggedness and long battery life results in students being able to work in or out of the classroom all day without recharging. A simple Universal Serial Bus connection lets students handle an amazing array of science probe modules anywhere, anytime. More than 40 types of probes are currently available, allowing students to measure temperature, alkalinity, motion, pressure and light. When students collected data, it can be viewed on Dana in real-time. Interactive analysis tools that come with the probeware allow students to zoom in and examine graphical data point-by-point on a graph that is plotted in real-time. Once students have collected experimental data, they can use Dana's beaming capability to exchange data with other students. With the HotSync software program, they can transfer their findings to classroom or lab computers for use with other analytical tools. Dana's full-size keyboard, page-width display and word processing capabilities allow students to start their reports at the experiment site.
