Examines the growing popularity of nonprint items in libraries, such as sound recordings and videocassettes. Difficulties in selecting, cataloging and classifying the materials; Opinion that nonprint materials are no less important than books and should be an integral part of collection development policy; View that nonprint materials should receive budget allocations appropriate to their contribution to the collection; Observation that there is a literacy crisis, and that videos are the most effective tool in conveying information; Perception that video has increased the number of library users; Obstacles to the development of nonprint collections, including the perception that the materials are so expensive that they must require special security measures.
