This article presents answers to health queries from readers that appeared in the November 20, 2003 issue of the journal "Update." In asymptomatic patients with moderate mitral regurgitation (MR), clinical assessment is needed every year and echocardiography is recommended every two years. When the MR is severe, the patient should be examined every six months and echocardiography repeated annually. The overall rate of osteoarthritis is increased in footballers and this appears to be related to rotational and torsional forces put through the knee. This is made much worse if the player is treated with meniscectomy.
