This article discusses the fundamental dynamics and control attributes and challenges faced by stationary and crosswind airborne wind energy (AWE) systems. AWE systems replace towers with tethers, thereby introducing additional degrees of freedom in flight. AWE systems employ periodic adjustment of altitude to optimize power capture subject to loading constraints. Stationary AWE systems feature two elements, namely airborne power generation and uninterrupted operation in limited winds.
