Abstract

The article presents an update on the treatment of youth with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with the use of risperidone. Risperidone's therapeutic action is hypothesized to result from its potent inhibition of dopamine-2 (D2) and serotonin-2A (5HT2A) receptors. Risperidone has a high affinity for alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic and histaminergic-1 receptors. It moderately binds to serotonin-1C, serotonin-1D, and serotonin-1A receptors.
