The article reports on the development of a novel flash spark plasma sintering process for rapid heating and consolidation of materials as compared to electric-current-assisted sintering. Topics include the advantages of flash sintering such as densifying materials that are insulators even at room temperature, the use of flash sintering to materials outside of conductive ceramics, and the technique's potential for producing less expensive and more sustainable rare-earth-free permanent magnets.
