The article presents guidelines for selection of appropriate brushless motor for projects, discussing benefits and downsides of four brushless motor varieties. Benefits and downsides discussed include limitation of asynchronous (AC) induction motors (IMs) to constant power speed range (CPSR) of about 2:1, higher efficiencies with no magnetization required by permanent magnet motors (PMMs), and need for more inverter current by synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) for mechanical power level.
