Egypt has the potential to generate a significant amount of energy from renewable technologies, in particular solar PV, concentrated solar power (CSP), and onshore and offshore wind. The energy sector is reliant on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, for electricity production and is at risk of locking itself into a high carbon pathway. Globally, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with national energy sectors is a target outlined in the UN's Paris Agreement. To reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with a higher dependence on fossil fuels, Egypt must consider upscaling renewable energy technologies (RETs) to achieve a clean energy transition (CET). This research modelled six scenarios using clicSAND for OSeMOSYS to identify the technologies and policy target improvements that are needed to upscale RETs within Egypt's energy sector. The results showed that solar PV and onshore wind are key technologies to be upscaled to contribute towards Egypt's CET. The optimal renewable target is the International Renewable Energy Agency's (IRENA) target of 53% of electricity being sourced from RETs by 2030, which will cost USD 16.4 billion more up to 2035 than Egypt's current Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) target of 42% by 2035; it also saves 732.0 MtCO2 over the entire modelling period to 2070. Socio-economic barriers to this transition are considered, such as recent discoveries of natural gas reserves combined with a history of energy insecurity, political instability impacting investor confidence, and a lack of international climate funding. The integration of solar-powered pumping systems (SPPS) into agriculture and potable and wastewater sectors becomes mandatory to provide water in remote regions. The broad use of SPPS with classical maximum power point tracking controllers (MPPTCs) showed moderated voltage and power response deterioration. Therefore, the necessity for overcoming these performance degradations and pre-testing of MPPTCs is not an option for the proper operation of such systems. This paper presents a new simple, cost-effective real-time hardware-in-the-loop (RT-HIL) framework to enhance the dynamic performance of SPPS. To accomplish this study, a real pumping station was modeled and equipped with MPPTCs through matlab/simulink. Besides, a practical SPPS was implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed RT-HIL on system performance. The practical SPPS includes designing a DC-DC buck converter circuit equipped with metaheuristic optimization-based real-time MPPTCs. The tuned PI/FOPI-based MPPTCs are adopted in this work to gain the maximum power from the PV generator under measured real environmental conditions. The proposed real-time MPPTCs techniques are perturb and observe, and incremental conductance (IC) with I, PI, and fractional-order PI (FOPI) controllers. The simulation and the experimental results prove the superiority of the developed real-time FOPI-based MPPTCs in enhancing the system performance in terms of the gained power, module output current, pump flowrate, and pump efficiency. The paper's novelty lies behind the relatively low-cost real-time execution of PI/FOPI-based MPPT techniques on SPPS. Egypt's need for clean and renewable energy is pressing for numerous reasons, such as unpredictable fuel prices, diminishing fossil fuel resources, and growing concern about environmental degradation. Harvesting untapped geothermal resources could meet domestic electricity needs besides enabling Egypt to export electricity. The location of Egypt confirms that it has suitable geothermal energy potential areas in some provinces around the country, especially along the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea, and the Western Desert. The Red Sea coast and the coasts of the Gulf of Suez exhibit several surface manifestations (hot springs and thermal water wells), indicating the presence of geothermal systems in these areas. The objective of this paper is to investigate the geothermal resources and obtain a full image of the geothermal potential of the Hurghada area along the Red Sea coast using geophysical potential field data. Aeromagnetic and aerogravity data were used to identify the most promising target regions for geothermal potentiality. Power spectral analysis of the aeromagnetic data was utilised to appraise the Curie point depth (CPD) and obtain geothermal gradient and heat flow maps of the Hurghada area, whereas a 3-D inversion of gravity data was utilised to estimate the depths to the Precambrian basement rocks. In addition to 3-D inversion of magnetic data to evaluate the spatial distribution of magnetic susceptibility. This study found no direct relationship between basement depths and the CPD, where basement rock outcrops at some locations correlate to a decrease in the Curie surface, while at others, they correspond to an increase. This paper discusses the technical and economic feasibility of a renewable energy-based system, aimed to replace the traditional diesel engines implemented on a pushed and pusher bulk carrier barge. This barge has a challenging navigational route in the Nile River from Alexandria to Aswan and vice versa. It is scheduled to complete 30 trips annually while carrying 850 tons/trip. The system is based on photovoltaic panels, and was selected with its excess energy to be stored primarily in the form of H 2 gas through electrolysis, and batteries (i.e. Power to Gas technology) to be later converted back to electrical energy through fuel cells. Hence, an operation algorithm was formulated to optimize the performance of the system by defining operating modes that use solar energy, hydrogen energy, batteries, or hybrid energy coming from multiple sources that result in an internal rate of return (IRR) of 15.1% and overall efficiency of 57.9%. This paper introduces the utilization of the International Atomic Energy Agency's toolkit for reactor technology assessment (RTA) application to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) in the Czech Republic, Egypt, and Poland. The increasing demand for clean energy has led to the prominence of small modular reactors (SMRs) in addressing global energy challenges. The successful integration of SMRs into national energy systems necessitates comprehensive evaluations that take into account each country's specific characteristics and energy requirements. RTA application represents significant progress towards innovative nuclear solutions, advancing a cleaner and more resilient energy future plan. The aim of this study is assessing the feasibility and advantages of SMR implementation in these countries, focusing on energy security, emission reduction, and long-term sustainability. Various SMR technologies, including NuScale, SMART, HTR-PM, BWRX-300, SMR-160, and RITM-200, are comparatively analyzed based on safety, scalability, efficiency, and economic viability. The findings reveal that BWRX-300 suits the needs of the Czech Republic and Poland, while RITM-200 is the optimal choice for Egypt. Moreover, NuScale also stands as a strong alternative for all three countries. This article emphasizes the importance of informed discussions and evidence-based decisions, promoting sustainable energy development and global advancements in nuclear technology. The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) recommended that Egypt be converted to green energy, in addition to increasing the demand for annual energy consumption, which will lead to an increase in the use of renewable energy sources (RES) in Egypt. The Egyptian Ministry of Energy and Electricity plans to build RES (photovoltaic systems and wind farms) connected to the Egyptian power system (EPS). It is a defect to choose the position and size of the RES based on only power calculations because the RES is an intermittent source. This paper presents a modified analytical energy technique for locating RES in IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus distribution networks and a realistic 25-bus 500 kV EPS. An analytical multi-objective function has been developed to determine the optimal locations of DGs or RESs based on power losses and annual energy loss calculations of the system depending on weather conditions. The efficiency and feasibility of the proposed algorithm based on the IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus distribution networks and the realistic 25-bus 500 kV EPS have been tested and compared with PSO and GA. The impact of RESs on the performance of the 25-bus 500 kV EPS has been investigated based on annual energy losses and operation stability depending on weather conditions. The results showed that the proposed technique used these effective values to obtain optimal weather-adjusted locations. The optimal locations of PV systems or wind systems based on energy calculation improved the voltage profile better than power calculation by about 2%, and the annual energy losses decreased by about 7%. The performance of the 25-bus 500 kV EPS, due to the addition of RES, resulted in a decrease in the annual energy losses of 47% and an improvement in the voltage profile and system stability. The world is experiencing unprecedented development in the clean energy sector in residential and industrial applications. This paper provides a case study assessing different scenarios of greenizing the electrical energy demand in El-Mostakbal city in Egypt. Three scenarios are studied with consideration of a photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with the grid-connected city with different integrated system configurations. The scenarios for the grid-connected city are scenario-I: only PV, scenario-II: PV with batteries for electricity storage along with grid electricity, and scenario-III: PV with hydrogen production, storage, and utilization for covering the electric demand along with grid electricity, these scenarios are assessed technoeconomically, and the results show an optimized case where the electricity demand of the city can be met with 64.3% produced from solar energy, at $71.7 M of the net present cost. • Energy demand is evaluated using different proposed green scenarios that are assessed techno-economically. • Electricity demand of the city can be met with 64.3% produced from solar energy. • The cost of energy generation for scenario-I is found to be $0.0512 per kWh. To ensure the global energy demands and decarbonize the production of electricity, the expanded utilization of solar photovoltaics (PV) as a renewable energy resource has been increasing in recent decades, principally with the feasibility to be integrated with the conventional power grid. However, supplying clean power from PV grid-connected systems is often hampered by power quality (PQ) disturbances caused by the intermittent nature of solar radiation and other factors related to the grid, converters, and connected loads. To prevent deterioration of the power quality of the system, these disturbances must be mitigated. This paper technically studies some of these PQ issues, that is, the current total harmonic distortion (THD) which causes harmful effects on the whole connected power system and the linked loads. The case study works on a 5.5 kW grid-connected rooftop PV power system established at Benha Faculty of Engineering, Egypt, with the assistance of an installed weather station that boosts the validation of the research results. All aspects regarding the aforementioned small plant are presented including description and simulation of the whole system, review of current THD problems occurring at the point of common coupling (PCC), and a review of other disturbances observed by connected meters. A detailed examination of four techniques for harmonic mitigation, namely the on-off technique, LCL filter, active power filter, and hybrid active power filter is presented with a final comparison to assess the merits and demerits of each one. The tourism sector is a key source of national income, and the use of renewable energy resources promotes green and sustainable tourism. In addition, ensuring a reliable supply and efficient use of clean energy is a primary objective of Egypt's Vision 2030, as it has a significant impact on the sustainable development and growth of the tourism sector in Egypt. Net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) are a promising decarbonization effort as they reduce energy consumption while increasing the share of renewable energy. Therefore, it is worth investigating the opportunities for NZEBs applications in tourism sector. This paper presents an optimization analysis of a hotel's grid-connected hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) based on its technical, economical, and environmental prospects. Seven scenarios are considered for on-site generation to match the energy requirements of the specific hotel building. The proposed hybrid systems incorporate photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and biogas generators into a grid-connected system for supplying power to a tourist hotel. The size of the microgrid system is optimized to decrease the net present cost (NPC) and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). The results reveal that the PV/wind grid-connected system, with renewable energy generators consisting of 143 kW of photovoltaic modules and one 20 kW wind turbine with a hub height of 18 m, has the lowest NPC and LCOE. This hybrid energy system has a net present cost of 388 k$, which is significantly lower compared to the electricity grid's cost of 873 k$. The electricity price of the proposed HRES, at 2.1 ¢/kWh, is highly competitive with Egypt's retail electricity prices of 6.9 ¢/kWh. Moreover, grid-connected HRES can lower the pressure on the electricity grid arising from the feed-in of electricity from HRES. Furthermore, the proposed HRES will help slow climate change by reducing GHG emissions and fossil fuel usage.
