Understanding how maritime hunter-gatherer diets changed through time in response to increasing social complexity can help us understand important transitions in early human history. This paper presents new baseline stable isotope values for southern California with an emphasis on marine plant and animal species. We use our baseline database to reevaluate human stable isotope values from the region using Bayesian mixing models to interpret dietary patterns across time and geographic space. Our analysis compares categories of foods consumed between island, coastal, and interior populations across the Middle and Late Holocene (circa 8000 to 168 cal BP) occupational history of precolonial southern California. Our results show a clear increase in the importance of high trophic marine foods, such as finfish, relative to low trophic level food, such as shellfish through time, paralleling increases in population size, economic intensification, and village aggregation in the Channel Region. This case study displays the capacity of Bayesian modeling to infer patterns of dietary change in the past when applied to human isotope values and adds to previous studies on the relationship between population growth, technological innovation, and the intensification of resource extraction in the region. This paper explores the challenges faced by unhoused women in accessing general and reproductive health care services in Santa Cruz, CA. Semi-structured interviews with women experiencing houselessness were conducted in Santa Cruz, CA with a focus on their narrative experiences as patients. The overwhelming majority of participants expressed appreciation for clinics that provided support through longer hours, alternative therapies, and appointment reminders. Overall, the interviews indicated that women who had access to a social worker were much more likely to report improved access to satisfactory treatment. These findings suggest that there is not a tangible lack of healthcare services for unhoused women in the local community, but rather a burden of treatment navigation caused by a dearth of information on how to access care. The interviews suggest that this burden can be reduced with social work interventions and service centers that offer health navigation support. By adapting theories of the "burden of treatment," we argue that additional attention must be paid to overcoming the "burden of treatment navigation." Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Sandy beaches are valued for various ecosystem services but are increasingly imperiled by anthropogenic stressors. Sea-level rise (SLR), reductions to sand supply, hardening the position of the coastline, and the prevalence of human development along California's coast combine to reduce the fundamental dynamism critical to the resilience of California's beaches. If California continues with business as usual, many of its beaches will erode and eventually disappear. Coastal jurisdictions in California are planning for SLR. However, these coastal managers lack a standardized regional assessment tool that compiles information on the current and likely future condition of sandy beaches. Without such a tool, these managers have limited ability to analyze the integrated impacts of historic decisions or future alternative management scenarios upon beach morphology, ecological functioning, economics, and social utility. This paper presents a study of the Beach Sustainability Assessment (BSA) decision support tool applied to 17 beaches spanning Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. In addition to scoring and grading geomorphological, ecological functioning, and social utility components, the BSA provides a single, overall grade for each beach. To demonstrate the utility of the BSA, a scenario with 1 m of SLR and a 100-year storm was simulated to assess the changes to the overall grade and component grades. The BSA offers a cost-effective, standardized protocol to monitor the condition of California's sandy beach ecosystems. The metrics support spatial and temporal comparisons on a regional scale, giving coastal managers and stakeholders the ability to assess real trade-offs among management solutions. Current BSA indices indicate that beaches in the Southern California Bight study area are already struggling, with most urban beaches receiving Cs and Ds for ecological functioning. Alkaline activation has received much attention in recent years as a method for improving the soil properties. This paper presents the details of laboratory investigation to evaluate the feasibility of using the alkaline activation along with the treated coir fibers for improvements of engineering characteristics of soils and subgrade performance of pavements. In the presence of high alkali solutes, the fly ash (FA) was used as a precursor due to its amorphous nature and high silica-to-alumina ratio. Additionally, this study adopted the physical treatment of the fiber surface with the linseed oil. Treated coir fibers and fly ash were added to soil in 1% and 60% ratios (by weight), respectively. Accordingly, a series of unconfined compressive strength (UCS), modulus of elasticity (Es), direct shear (DS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests were conducted on the stabilized soil with and without pairing with treated fibers. By adding alkali-activated (AA) fly ash and inclusion of treated fibers led to increasing deformability and failure strain. Based on the atomic force microscopy tests, the addition of treated fibers contributes to the enhancement of AA-stabilized soil through yielding a denser and more uniform structure. The findings encouraged the application of AA-stabilized soils reinforced with treated fibers to improve the strength of soils in alkaline environment as subgrade of pavements. With a recently concluded pilot program in the State of California, road user charge (RUC) was explored as an alternative means of transportation funding. The goal was to gather public opinion, address privacy and data security concerns. The pilot program was meant for the future implementation of RUC in the State. However, the impact of RUC on travel demand changes impacting California's industry sectors was not explored or probed. It is expected that by 2020 or later, RUC could have the potential to be implemented in the State causing some initial mode shifts or reduced number of trips made by private vehicles to minimize the cost of travel. This could have a potential impact on employment-based trips to industry sectors of California. Therefore, this paper explores the effects of RUC on the 'attractiveness' of four key industry sectors of the State using potential accessibility changes. The changes are evaluated from the RUC implementation for the year 2019 using the year 2013 as the base year. The four key industry sectors used in the evaluation are (i) Manufacturing, (ii) Retail Trade, (iii) Health Care and Social Assistance, and (iv) Accommodation and Food Services. In this evaluation, four vehicle fuel-types are considered, namely gasoline, compressed natural gas (CNG), diesel, and electric for California's rural and urban counties. On average, the percentage change in potential accessibility was found to be largest for counties for the Health Care and Social Assistance industry sector across all fuel types for both rural and urban counties in California. This indicates that the commuters from this industry sector would experience the most considerable benefit with RUC implementation. The lowest average percentage potential accessibility change was observed for the Accommodation and Food Services. The use of low-NOx compressed natural gas (CNG) medium-duty vehicles (MDVs) and heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) has the potential to significantly reduce NOx emissions and yield improvements in regional air quality. However, the extent of air quality improvement depends on many factors including future levels of vehicle deployment, the evolution of emissions from other sources, and meteorology. An analysis of the impacts requires modeling the atmosphere to account for both primary and secondary air pollutants, and the use of health impact assessment tools to map air quality changes into quantifiable metrics of human health. Here, we quantify and compare the air quality and health impacts associated with the deployment of low-NOx CNG engines to power future MDV and HDV fleets in California relative to both a business-as-usual and a more advanced fleet composition. The results project that reductions in summer ground-level ozone could reach 13 ppb when compared to a baseline fleet of diesel and gasoline HDV and MDV and could reach 6 ppb when compared to a cleaner fleet that includes some zero-emission vehicles and fuels. Similarly, for all CNG cases considered reductions in PM2.5 are predicted to range from 1.2 ug/m3 to 2.7 ug/m3 for a summer episode and from 3.1 ug/m3 to approximately 7.8 ug/m3 for a winter episode. These improvements yield short-term health benefits equivalent to $47 to $56 million in summer and $38 to $43 million in winter during episodes conducive to poor air quality. Additionally, the use of zero emission vehicle options such as battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell trucks could achieve approximately 25% to 31% higher benefits for an equivalent fleet penetration level due to the additional emission reductions achieved. Implications: The paper provides a quantitative estimate of the air quality and human health benefits that can be achieved through the use of novel compressed natural gas engines (i.e., low-NOx CNG) in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and provide a comparison with zero emission vehicles. Thus, our findings will provide support for policy development seeking to transform the trucking sector to meet clean air and climate goals given the current struggle policymakers have with selecting between alternative truck technologies due to variance in factors like cost and technical maturity. While a growing body of research has examined immigrants' health generally, less is known specifically about the impact of immigration policy on the health of Chinese immigrants, the second-largest foreign-born population in the United States. This is due, in part, to the lack of methodologically well-trained, cross-cultural researchers who have both the cultural and linguistic expertise and health knowledge to engage with Chinese immigrant populations. This paper addresses this gap by examining Chinese cross-cultural researchers' roles in the qualitative phase of the Research on ImmiGrant HealTh and State policy (RIGHTS) project, which sought to assess how immigration policies shaped Chinese and other immigrants' experiences in healthcare and other related sectors in California. We used reflexivity to assess Chinese cross-cultural researchers' positionality of insiderness and outsiderness and its influence on the process of data collection (i.e., recruitment, conducting interviews, transcription, and translation). Our reflexivity guides the assessment of the opportunities (e.g., expanding the recruitment pool, engaging participants more effectively in interviews, ensuring data integrity, and discussing heterogeneity within the Chinese immigrant community) and challenges (e.g., the difficulty of recruiting low-income and undocumented immigrants, addressing participants' in-depth thoughts, the time-consuming nature of transcription and translation, and the assessment of power dynamics) in conducting immigrant health research with the Chinese community. These results highlight the need for cross-cultural researchers to help build trusting relationships with ethnic-minority communities, thus gaining new insights and advancing knowledge within the field of ethnic minority health research. BACKGROUND: We developed the Tobacco Prevention Toolkit (Toolkit) to enhance the impact of school‐based tobacco education. This study describes the process of developing the Toolkit, its contents, and reach. METHODS: Qualitative community‐based participatory research (CBPR), including focus group discussions (N = 152) and working groups with parents, educators, researchers, and youth (N = 87) were used to develop the Toolkit and design its implementation. Toolkit reach was assessed through number of trained educators using the Toolkit, estimated number of youth recipients of the Toolkit resources, and using Google Analytics for online engagement. RESULTS: The Toolkit is a free, online resource aimed at preventing tobacco use by middle and high school students. Toolkit content addresses varied forms of tobacco including electronic cigarettes, hookah, smokeless tobacco, and cigarettes; addiction; and positive youth development; and is available in multiple interactive formats such as real‐time quizzes, factsheets, activities, and presentations. The Toolkit is mainly delivered by trained educators, who adapt its content and duration to tailor their drug prevention teaching to student needs. As of April 2020, when data for this paper were collected, 4,750 educators have reached an estimated 1.3 million youth. The Toolkit website has 186,116 users and 802,602 page views, growing steadily since 2016. As of August 2021, additional students have been reached, for now a total of 1.85 million students reached. CONCLUSION: The Toolkit resources are evidence‐based, comprehensive, responsive, interactive, easily accessible, and flexible. Persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) is a widely used technique for local ground deformation estimation due to its millimetric accuracy and full-resolution results. However, with the enhancement of data acquisition capability of the SAR sensors, larger coverage and higher temporal-spatial resolution of SAR images can cause explosive increase and uneven distribution of PS points. PS network constructed between PSs with different qualities may cause spatial-error propagation. Large PS points list with large amount of data also have high requirements on computing performance and storage space. Those problems can bring big challenge for PS-InSAR technique in processing capacity, deformation monitoring accuracy and algorithm efficiency. In order to effectively overcome those limitations, this paper proposed a novel block PS-InSAR method that uses the approach of partitioning a study area into regular blocks with overlapping regions, selecting a high-quality reference point for each block and eliminating the discontinuity of the parameter calculating results in adjacent blocks by the weighted least square method. We used this approach to analyze ground subsidence in over 13,000 km2 of southern California, and it performed successfully when 69 Sentinel-1 images were used and 21,029,968 PSs were selected. Only approximately 10 h was needed for this experiment. Comparing the deformation rate and time series of the InSAR results with 29 GPS observations, the mean and standard deviation of difference of deformation rate were − 0.63 mm/yr and 1.53 mm/yr, respectively, and the average root mean squared error of deformation time series was 3.7 mm. The experiment demonstrated that this method could achieve high accuracy results without spatial discontinuity and increase the computational efficiency significantly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydroelectric generators in pumped-storage service experience more loading cycles than their counterparts in continuous-flow service. As a result, generator rotors in pumped-storage service are more susceptible to fatigue cracking, especially in high-stress locations such as the field-pole attachment slots. Failure of a pole attachment during operation has catastrophic consequences. Pacific Gas and Electric Company, owner, and operator of the Helms Pumped-Storage Facility in California, sought assistance in performing stress and fatigue crack growth analyses of the original Helms rotor design to assess the potential for fatigue cracking in the pole-attachment dovetails. Informed by results from a preliminary analysis, the company decided to inspect the Helms pole attachments. Inspections revealed the presence of cracking in several pole-attachment dovetail slots. Cracks were removed by local grinding as a temporary repair to allow limited additional operation while replacement rotors were fabricated. Detailed analysis of the repaired rotor was performed to evaluate remaining strength based on conservative assumptions. This paper offers a comparative look at the organization of built space and storage for sedentary communities in the world's Mediterranean climatic regions and assesses the variable expressions of certain underlying features that are held in common. Our analysis focuses on two primary case studies: the occupants of the Aegean Sea region from the Neolithic to Roman periods (ca. 6800 BCE-168 CE) and the coastal Chumash of southern California during the Late Period (1300–1782 CE). We show that in both regions, households took advantage of outdoor spaces as productive activity areas during the long periods of favorable weather each year. This incorporation of exterior spaces was typically structured using clear visual cues or architecture. Additionally, surplus food was acquired by individual households and stored to mitigate the inherent risks of interannual variability in precipitation and expected annual periods of lower yield (i.e., winter). Since storage was typically organized at the household level, the domestic architecture often incorporated dedicated space or built facilities to manage this surplus. By understanding such climatic influences on the regions' architecture and storage infrastructure, the distinct cultural qualities of these expressions can be better articulated. While it is not our contention that these attributes manifested identical outward architectural and material forms or were exclusive to Mediterranean environments, we suggest that the environment was an important influence on construction and storage decisions which could be adapted according to the local histories of their respective communities. This paper examines the phenomenon of film location maps in California. These unusual maps, popular in the 1930s and associated with Paramount Studios, presented those locations within California that could plausibly substitute for another world location onscreen (e.g., the Sierra Nevada mountain range could stand in for the Alps as a background in a film). In this article, I analyze a sequence of these maps, arguing that the global juxtapositions and cinematic superimpositions that they create were only possible within a specific historical context, namely (1) the formalization of the role of the location manager as that profession evolved within the studio system and location shooting in California; (2) a particular form of place-based tourist marketing for California that claimed a global variety of geographies within the state; (3) the importance of the idea of place to Paramount Studios in these years, and how this related to a contemporaneous boom in California place-naming; and (4) the simultaneous rise of pictorial maps, a kind of cartography that joined illustration and caricature. Exploring spatial patterns in the context of disease mapping is a decisive approach to bring evidence of geographical tendencies in assessing disease status and progression. In most cases, multiple count responses (corresponding to disease incidences of multiple types, such as cancer in men and women) are recorded at each spatial location, which may exhibit similar spatial patterns in addition to disease-specific patterns. These are typically modeled using multivariate shared component models, where the spatial (random) effects may be shared between the disease types to model their association. However, this framework is not immune to spatial confounding, where the latent correlation between the spatial random effects and the fixed effects often leads to misleading interpretation. A recent approach to attenuate spatial confounding is the "SPatial Orthogonal Centroid 'K'orrection", aka SPOCK, which displaces the geographical centroids, ensuring orthogonality of the spatial random effects and the fixed effects. In this paper, we introduce MSPOCK, or Multiple SPOCK, to tackle spatial confounding for the multiple counts scenario. The methodology is evaluated on synthetic data, and illustrated via an application to new cases of respiratory system cancer for men and women for the US state of California in 2016. Our studies show that the MSPOCK correction leads to a reduction of the posterior variance estimates of model parameters, while maintaining the interpretation of the model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Post-wildfire investigations of structures provide engineers with data to understand how to harden building infrastructure for future wildfire hazards. This paper presents a preliminary framework where field-collected LiDAR and drone data is integrated with numerical models for post-wildfire assessment of buildings with the goal of learning from wildfire-damaged buildings. The developed framework provides a new and novel approach for post-wildfire instigations of buildings using field-collected data, particularly LiDAR and drone data. This framework is demonstrated on a metal-framed school building in Paradise, California that was heavily damaged in the 2018 Camp Fire. The authors collected drone aerial images and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scans of Achieve Charter High School after the 2018 Camp Fire. All data were used to create a system-level finite element model to simulate the fire behavior of a portal frame with non-prismatic members. A parametric study was performed with three typical compartment fires to examine the influence of building characteristics on the fire's maximum temperature and duration. Several time–temperature (T–t) curves, representing different fire scenarios, were generated between the two extreme cases produced by the parametric study. Finally, the finite element model was subjected to the generated fire curves, and the results were compared with the measured deformations from the LiDAR data collected in the field. The tribe Loteae of the family Leguminosae has major centers of diversity in the Mediterranean Region and California. It is used here to illustrate different traditions of taxonomic interpretation of infraspecific variation among researchers in different continents. Recent accounts of European and Mediterranean taxa commonly make an emphasis on recognizing subspecies. In contrast, accounts of North American Loteae recognize all infraspecific taxa as varieties. Harmonization of taxonomic concepts across continents is essential for a more accurate representation of data in global biodiversity databases. It is reasonable to use the rank of subspecies for geographically defined infraspecific units with localized zones of intergradation. Such subspecies may be at least partially compatible across continents and taxonomic groups. In the present paper, we discuss taxa traditionally included in or associated with Acmispon glaber (Vogel) Brouillet (=Syrmatium glabrum Vogel) and demonstrate a need for recognizing three species, of which one has three geographically defined subspecies. Required nomenclatural combinations are proposed. It is proposed that subspecies rather than varieties should be recognized in a number of other species of North American Loteae (and other plant groups). Inland subspecies of Acmispon glaber and A. maritimus offer an opportunity for comparative analysis in an eco-evo-devo framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper considers a photograph by Leon A. Borensztein of the artist Judith Scott, taken in the Creative Growth Arts Center in California in 1997. It explores notions of affect and the mobilization of feeling on the part of the artist and artwork, photographer and viewer, with consideration of the way in which textile associations are central to the affective passage of transmission and encounter. A textile-skin interface between the haptic and the scopic is seen to characterize both the performative arena of the subject matter and the intricacy of the photograph's surface. Scott's textile-rich practices as an artist and her biographical circumstances are considered as intrinsic to the affective potency of the image. Didier Anzieu's notion of the skin envelope further enriches analysis of the bond that is established within the performative arena of the image and the sensations that are embodied in the viewer's response. The prevalence of heavy drinking is high among Korean Americans (KAs), but alcohol treatment utilisation is low. Korean American drinking behaviours may be attributable to the Korean drinking culture. However, relatively little research has been conducted to explore this narrative. The aim of this paper was to examine the social and cultural contexts of drinking and help‐seeking behaviours among second generation KAs. In 2016, we conducted a rapid ethnographic assessment (REA) in partnership with a Korean American church in Los Angeles. The REA involved participant observation and ten unstructured interviews. We used constructivist grounded theory to analyse the themes emerging from field notes and interview transcripts. Respondents perceived the existence of a Korean drinking culture in the United States that has been passed down from prior generations and preserved in ethnic enclaves. This Korean drinking culture was marked by festive occasions with heavy drinking, but the extent to which respondents adopted this drinking culture may have depended on their ethnic identities and connections to the community. For many second generation KAs, identity and community were tied to religious life. We found that KAs perceived professional treatment and recovery resources to be underutilised. Inclusionary housing is considered a powerful local policy tool that can help address housing affordability and social inclusion issues. This paper draws from empirical research conducted in the City of Santa Monica in California to provide fresh insights on a successful innovative inclusionary housing program, the Affordable Housing Production Program (AHPP). This program was established to increase affordable housing production and enable social integration. Based on the Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) of the General Plan, the AHPP seeks to capture some of the increase in land value resulting from planned increases in the intensity of development. Our research shows that the program increased inclusionary housing production by market-rate developers by 15% over the previous inclusionary housing policy. The study finds that land use policies and planning can, through inclusionary housing, help harness the strength of the real estate market to (1) increase affordable housing production, and (2) achieve effective social integration in neighborhoods of opportunity. A new time series interferometric synthetic aperture radar method is presented based on a strain model. Traditionally, the interferometric phases are optimized based only on a constant set of statistically homogeneous points throughout the observing period, and thus the decorrelated phase cannot be well recovered and possible incoherent (or coherent) phases are (are not) used to optimize the target phase. In the proposed method, a strain model, representing the geophysical relationship of spatially adjacent points' deformations, is employed to optimize the interferometric phases interferogram‐by‐interferogram. The unwrapped phase time series can be estimated from the wrapped interferograms based on the linear iterative weighted least squares method, which is simple and can effectively suppress the decorrelation noise. Both simulations and analysis of data over The Geysers geothermal field (TG), California are conducted, validating that the proposed method can reduce the decorrelations and simultaneously preserve the deformation signals. The displacement results of TG from 2007–2011 L‐band ascending ALOS‐1 data and 2015–2020 C‐band ascending/descending Sentinel‐1 data reveal that (a) the displacement rate of TG is decreasing from 2007–2011 to 2015–2020, and (b) temporally variable displacement signals in addition to steady displacement can be observed from 2015 to 2020 for both the east‐west and the vertical components. Plain Language Summary: The interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique is capable of accurately measuring ground surface displacements at high spatial resolution and large coverage. This paper proposes a strain‐model based InSAR time series method, here referred to as the SIGMA method. The SIGMA method aims to enhance the capability of InSAR to measure displacements and can achieve higher accuracy and density of InSAR displacement measurements. Both simulations and real‐data experiments are conducted to illuminate the benefits of the SIGMA method in the presence of substantial decorrelation noise. Particularly, the SIGMA method is used to investigate the surface displacements of The Geysers geothermal field, California, during 2007–2011 and 2015–2020. These time periods are complementary to those considered in previous studies, providing an important data set to investigate the long‐term evolution of ground surface deformation, as well as the effects of recent fluid injection and production practices in the geothermal field. Opportunistic and unstructured observations of biodiversity crowdsourced from volunteers, community, and citizen scientists make up an increasingly large proportion of our global biodiversity knowledge. This incredible wealth of information exists in real time at both high resolutions and large extents of space, time, and taxonomy, thus holding huge potential to fill gaps in global biodiversity monitoring coverage in a cost‐effective way. Yet, the full potential of these data to provide essential indicators of biodiversity change for both research and management remains mostly unrealized, in large part due to the prevailing perception that the lack of standardization presents an unsurmountable barrier. In this paper, we provide an overview of the main challenges of working with unstructured community‐contributed data and synthesize the four fundamental approaches to overcome these challenges and extract useful inferences of biodiversity change, namely: 1) reverse‐engineering survey structure; 2) borrowing strength across taxa; 3) modeling the observation process, and; 4) integrating standardized data sources. To illustrate each of these approaches, we provide examples comparing community‐contributed observations crowdsourced via iNaturalist with long‐term standardized monitoring surveys for a subset of rocky intertidal organisms on the California coast from 2010 to 2019. We conclude by highlighting ways forward for the successful integration of unstructured community‐contributed observations within the global ecosystem of biodiversity change monitoring tools. Our ultimate goal is to update the prevailing perception among researchers and practitioners that unstructured community‐contributed observations of biodiversity are too noisy to use, and help establish this data stream as a key tool for research and management. Reflection seismic imaging usually suffers from a loss of resolution and contrast because of the fluctuations of the wave velocities in the Earth's crust. In the literature, phase distortion issues are generally circumvented by means of a background wave velocity model. However, it requires a prior tomography of the wave velocity distribution in the medium, which is often not possible, especially in depth. In this paper, a matrix approach of seismic imaging is developed to retrieve a 3-D image of the subsoil, despite a rough knowledge of the background wave velocity. To do so, passive noise cross-correlations between geophones of a seismic array are investigated under a matrix formalism. They form a reflection matrix that contains all the information available on the medium. A set of matrix operations can then be applied in order to extract the relevant information as a function of the problem considered. On the one hand, the background seismic wave velocity can be estimated and its fluctuations quantified by projecting the reflection matrix in a focused basis. It consists in investigating the response between virtual sources and detectors synthesized at any point in the medium. The minimization of their cross-talk can then be used as a guide star for approaching the actual wave velocity distribution. On the other hand, the detrimental effect of wave velocity fluctuations on imaging is overcome by introducing a novel mathematical object: The distortion matrix. This operator essentially connects any virtual source inside the medium with the distortion that a wavefront, emitted from that point, experiences due to heterogeneities. A time reversal analysis of the distortion matrix enables the estimation of the transmission matrix that links each real geophone at the surface and each virtual geophone in depth. Phase distortions can then be compensated for any point of the underground. Applied to passive seismic data recorded along the Clark branch of the San Jacinto fault zone (SJFZ), the present method is shown to provide an image of the fault until a depth of 4 km over the frequency range 10–20Hz with an horizontal resolution of 80 m. Strikingly, this resolution is almost one eighth below the diffraction limit imposed by the geophone array aperture. The heterogeneities of the subsoil play the role of a scattering lens and of a transverse waveguide which increase drastically the array aperture. The contrast is also optimized since most of the incoherent noise is eliminated by the iterative time reversal process. Beyond the specific case of the SJFZ, the reported approach can be applied to any scales and areas for which a reflection matrix is available at a spatial sampling satisfying the Nyquist criterion. The aim of this study was to describe characteristics and content of nurses' handover tools used for handover report and congruence of content shift-to-shift. Nurses use handwritten notes to record information despite recommendations for standardizing content of handover to improve patient safety. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a non-profit hospital in Southern California where a convenience sample of 105 registered nurses voluntarily submitted their paper handover tools. Twenty-seven types of handover tools were collected. Participants customized handover tools with color, writing implement, emphasis markings, and symbols. Content analysis revealed that most handover tools contained the patient's name, birthdate, account number, room number, medical history, allergies, code status, systems review, vital signs, medications, vascular access, test results, plan of care, and tasks. Safety/risk-related information was rarely present. Handover tools were context-specific and individualized with handwritten information that was incongruent shift-to-shift. Climate change has, and will continue to have, a disproportionate impact on communities of color. Already, it is clear that systemic racism has led to increased temperatures in predominantly Black neighborhoods as compared to white neighborhoods in the same cities. A legacy of discriminatory housing policies in California is correlated with worse air quality and health disparities, both of which could be further exacerbated as temperatures rise. As cities and states begin developing climate change adaptation plans, it is imperative that they develop equity-based solutions that take into account how discriminatory practices are leading to disproportionate climate impacts. If such impacts are not accounted for, they will be exacerbated in the future. This paper analyzes equity-based climate adaptation strategies for heat, which is already the deadliest weather-related disaster in the U.S., and how they could be applied to Los Angeles. A study was conducted to analyze the usage of 12 public libraries in Long Beach city, California, USA. The paper analyzed the awareness of public library services during the covid-19 Pandemic in main and its neighborhood libraries. The methodology adopted for the study was the survey method in which questionnaires and interviews were used as Data collection Techniques. A total of 36 respondents participated in the study. It was concluded that all the patrons are aware of the public libraries' alternative services; they utilize them effectively. Show that the maximum users of long beach public library are highly satisfied with the various services offered to them 29(80.56%) during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Public library are considered to be the most essential since they improve the literacy rate. This study characterized nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH 3) emissions from five in-use goods movement vehicles, including one diesel vehicle without selective catalytic reduction (SCR), two diesel vehicles with SCR, and two ultra-low NOx natural gas vehicles equipped with three-way catalysts (TWCs). Emissions testing was performed under real-world driving conditions in typical goods movement routes in the South Coast Air Basin (SCAB) of California. NOx emissions varied depending on the vehicle and the route. The no-SCR diesel vehicle showed the highest NOx emissions over all the routes. One of the SCR-equipped vehicles showed NOx emission rates that were two times higher than the other SCR-equipped vehicle with similar engine model year and mileage, which may be attributed to catalyst deterioration. The SCR-equipped diesel vehicles were within two to three times 0.2 g/bhp-hr certification standard over the different routes. The natural gas vehicles showed average NOx emissions around or below the optional Low NOx emissions standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr. The three-bin moving average window (MAW) method was utilized to show the NOx emissions across various modes of operation, including idle, low load, and medium/high load. The highest fraction of vehicle operation was found in either the low load or medium/high load bins, depending on the route. NOx emissions for each of the bins varied between different vehicles, and are further analyzed in this paper. NH 3 emissions formation was favored for the TWC-equipped natural gas vehicles, which produced about 20 times more NH 3 emissions than the SCR-equipped diesel vehicles. Vegetation structure mapping is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle and monitoring nature-based approaches to climate adaptation and mitigation. Repeated measurements of these data allow for the observation of deforestation or degradation of existing forests, natural forest regeneration, and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices like agroforestry. Assessments of tree canopy height and crown projected area at a high spatial resolution are also important for monitoring carbon fluxes and assessing tree-based land uses, since forest structures can be highly spatially heterogeneous, especially in agroforestry systems. Very high resolution satellite imagery (less than one meter (1 m) Ground Sample Distance) makes it possible to extract information at the tree level while allowing monitoring at a very large scale. This paper presents the first high-resolution canopy height map concurrently produced for multiple sub-national jurisdictions. Specifically, we produce very high resolution canopy height maps for the states of California and São Paulo, a significant improvement in resolution over the ten meter (10 m) resolution of previous Sentinel / GEDI based worldwide maps of canopy height. The maps are generated by the extraction of features from a self-supervised model trained on Maxar imagery from 2017 to 2020, and the training of a dense prediction decoder against aerial lidar maps. We also introduce a post-processing step using a convolutional network trained on GEDI observations. We evaluate the proposed maps with set-aside validation lidar data as well as by comparing with other remotely sensed maps and field-collected data, and find our model produces an average Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.8 m and Mean Error (ME) of 0.6 m. Expansive clay soils increase in volume when in contact with water and shrink by losing water. Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) are one of the components of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes that can be used instead of natural resources in road construction projects. In this research, a combined method of mechanical and chemical stabilization was used to evaluate the use of RCA as a mechanical stabilizer and granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) as a chemical stabilizer to improve the strength and resilience characteristics of expansive clay subgrade. Laboratory results showed that adding RCA wastes to expansive clay subgrade reduced atterberg limits (LL, PL, and PI) and optimum water content (OWC) and increased the maximum dry density (MDD), California bearing ratio (CBR), and uniaxial compression strength (UCS). Expansive clay subgrade with 20 % RCA was treated with GBS chemical stabilizer in order to achieve a minimum 7 days target strength of 1.7 MPa for subbase application. A series of repeated load triaxial (RLT) tests were performed according to the AASHTO T307 procedure and resilient modulus (M r) values of the stabilized clay subgrade specimen were evaluated at different curing times under cyclic loading. Also, the proposed Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design Guide (MEPDG) model was used to predict M r values in different confining and deviator stresses which showed a good correlation with the measured M r values. Finally, the improvement of the clay subgrade stabilized with RCA and GBS was also supported by SEM analysis. The results obtained from this research showed that the use of RCA, in addition to reducing disposed waste and environmental pollution, can improve the physical and mechanical characteristics of expansive clay Subgrade layers. Mandated minimum nurse-to-patient ratios have been the subject of active debate in the U.S. for over twenty years and are under legislative consideration today in several states and at the federal level. This paper uses the 1999 California nurse staffing mandate as an empirical setting to estimate the causal effects of minimum ratios on hospitals. Minimum ratios led to a 58 min increase in nursing time per patient day and 9 percent increase in the wage bill per patient day in the general medical/surgical acute care unit among treated hospitals. Hospitals responded on several margins: increased use of lower-licensed and younger nurses, reduced capacity by 16 beds (14 percent), and increased bed utilization rates by 0.045 points (8 percent). Using administrative data on discharges for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), I find a significant reduction in length of stay (5 percent) and no effect on the 30-day all-cause readmission rate. The null effect on readmissions suggests that length of stay declined not because hospitals were discharging AMI patients "quicker and sicker", rather, AMI patients recovered more quickly due to an improvement in care quality per day. Various tools and techniques are used by environmental managers and planning agencies to make land use decisions that balance different and often competing goals. Multiple goals, or objectives, are generally challenging to address because there is likely no single optimal solution, but rather a range of possible Pareto (or tradeoff) solutions. Considerable attention has focused on software and approaches that rely on heuristic methods to generate solutions for land use planning problems with multiple objectives. While fast and accessible, there remain uncertainties about the quality of solutions obtained by these heuristic methods and whether they are indeed meeting the needs of environmental managers. This paper explores forest treatment planning for wildfire risk mitigation seeking to balance multiple objectives when the spatial pattern of treatment is restricted. Solution quality of one widely employed forest planning tool is evaluated (using measures of completeness, inferiority, and maximum gap) under a range of geographic settings and problem sizes. Biomass estimates for shrub‐dominated ecosystems in southern California have been generated at national and statewide extents. However, existing data tend to underestimate biomass in shrub vegetation types are limited to one point in time, or estimate aboveground live biomass only. In this study, we extended our previously developed estimates of aboveground live biomass (AGLBM) based on the empirical relationship of plot‐based field biomass measurements to Landsat normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and multiple environmental factors to include other vegetative pools of biomass. AGLBM estimates were made by extracting plot values from elevation, solar radiation, aspect, slope, soil type, landform, climatic water deficit, evapotranspiration, and precipitation rasters and then using a random forest model to estimate per‐pixel AGLBM across our southern California study area. By substituting year‐specific Landsat NDVI and precipitation data, we created a stack of annual AGLBM raster layers for each year from 2001 to 2021. Using these AGLBM data as a foundation, we developed decision rules to estimate belowground, standing dead, and litter biomass pools. These rules were based on relationships between AGLBM and the biomass of the other vegetative pools derived primarily from peer‐reviewed literature and an existing spatial data set. For shrub vegetation types (our primary focus), rules were based on literature estimates by the postfire regeneration strategy of each species (obligate seeder, facultative seeder, obligate resprouter). Similarly, for nonshrub vegetation types (grasslands, woodlands) we used literature and existing spatial data sets specific to each vegetation type to define rules to estimate the other pools from AGLBM. Using a Python language script that accessed Environmental Systems Research Institute raster geographic information system utilities, we applied decision rules to create raster layers for each of the non‐AGLBM pools for the years 2001–2021. The resulting spatial data archive contains a zipped file for each year; each of these files contains four 32‐bit tiff files for each of the four biomass pools (AGLBM, standing dead, litter, and belowground). The biomass units are grams per square meter (g/m2). We estimated the uncertainty of our biomass data by conducting a Monte Carlo analysis of the inputs used to generate the data. Our Monte Carlo technique used randomly generated values for each of the literature‐based and spatial inputs based on their expected distribution. We conducted 200 Monte Carlo iterations, which produced percentage uncertainty values for each of the biomass pools. Results showed, using 2010 as an example, mean biomass for the study area and percentage uncertainty for each of the pools as follows: AGLBM (905.4 g/m2, 14.4%); standing dead (644.9 g/m2, 1.3%); litter (731.2 g/m2, 1.2%); and belowground (776.2 g/m2, 17.2%). Because our methods are consistently applied across each year, the data produced can be used to inform changes in biomass pools due to disturbance and subsequent recovery. As such, these data provide an important contribution to supporting the management of shrub‐dominated ecosystems for monitoring trends in carbon storage and assessing the impacts of wildfire and management activities, such as fuel management and restoration. With many countries planning to significantly increase grid renewable energy penetration levels, we consider the role of wave energy in supply–demand matching. We investigate how incorporating wave power into an offshore wind farm affects farm power predictability, smoothness, required energy storage capacity, and cost. In this paper, we do a first-order cost analysis of an offshore farm comprised of floating wind turbines and wave energy converters that are both standalone and combined and onshore compressed air energy storage. Then, we do a parameter sweep investigation of an isolated power network supplied by varied grid renewable energy penetration levels supplemented by natural gas, varied distribution of renewable energy between wind and wave power, and varied power capacity of a compressed air energy storage system supplying power to a shoreline community. For each parameter set, we consider the historical hourly electricity demand and wind-sea data of a coastal California community over a year, and optimize the energy storage schedule to reduce curtailed power, stored energy, and base gas plant operational cost. We show that a co-located wind-wave farm has smoother power supply, less energy curtailment, and higher farm-to-grid efficiency than a solely wind farm. That is, a 50%–50% wind-wave farm has a 15% smaller coefficient of variation in the power supply, 6% less curtailed power, and 2% higher farm-grid efficiency than a 100% wind farm when the grid is 100% renewable energy. These benefits of wave power potentially decrease the need for interconnecting regional transmission lines to match power supply with demand. This paper explores the politics of eminent domain, using a specific historical episode: the enactment of the new California constitution in 1879. It presents evidence that the failure of a constitutional provision that would have codified eminent domain powers for water development resulted from a complex interchange of economic interests among farmers, miners, and urban residents. This evidence was manifested in delegate behavior on the floor of the constitutional convention in 1878, including various roll-call votes, which are subjected to an econometric analysis. The results have implications for the interpretation of legislative eminent domain decisions, and the degree to which economic development processes are shaped by the institutional environment in which they occur. Given the wide application of lime stabilized loess in road base and subbase, subgrade, building foundations and slopes, a set of generalized and accurate mechanical estimation models of lime stabilized loess is essential for quality control. In this research, three modified models were proposed to capture the effects of lime content and compactness on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), resilience modulus (M R), internal friction angle (φ), cohesion (c) and compression coefficient (a 1-2) of lime stabilized loess at both 7-day and 28-day curing periods. Compared with the logarithmic model, the hyperbolic model can more reasonably characterize the effect of the curing period on these mechanical indices. Taking those factors together, a set of three-factor estimation models based on both 7-day and 28-day references were developed and show high reliability. Moreover, the establishment of relationships between UCS and CBR , M R , φ and c provides a shortcut for the mechanical property estimation of lime stabilized loess. Finally, based on multiple sets of UCS data sourced from numerous papers, a hyperbolic model with a wider application range was established to link normalized UCS to curing time. This paper aimed to investigate the effect of Solution Road RomixSoilfix (SRX) on deformation performance of GBM and to evaluate the feasibility of SRX modified GBM (SRX-GBM) as a flexible base in expressway structure. A series of experimental tests were performed to analyze the influence of SRX content on curing process, stability and deformation performance of SRX-GBM. Subsequently, a flexible pavement was constructed using the SRX-GBM base course at the field sections on Tengchong to Longchuan Expressway in Southwest China. Results show that the use of SRX improves the California bearing ratio (CBR) of GBM, which raises from 145% to 417%. The dry shrinkage resistance and water stability of SRX-GBM are obviously better than cement-stabilized macadam. The results of triaxial tests demonstrate that the resilient behavior of SRX-GBM is dependent on the stress characteristics and curing times. The existing stress-related model is available for evaluating the changes of stress contribution to the Mr with the increase of SRX content. Since the base course has a high residual moisture content in a humid climate, the CBR of 250% was proposed by field CBR and deflection tests as a criterion for controlling curing time. In this paper, a risk-based seismic design method for diagonal self-centering braces (SCB) with shape memory alloy (SMA) wires implemented in multi-column bents is proposed to enhance the performance of older concrete bridge classes. An existing SMA-SCB system that improves the performance of older reinforced concrete building frames was adopted to numerically examine further applications to nonductile bridges. To this end, risk-based seismic design of the SMA-SCB to minimize the probability of collapse and demolition of bridge classes was developed by adopting a sophisticated finite element model that reflects the recentering behavior of an actual SMA-SCB; probabilistic bridge models considering uncertainties associated with the material and geometrical properties of bridges; refined failure condition; and the total probability theorem. A comparison of the results of the traditional seismic fragility-based and proposed designs indicated that the amount of SMA-SCB required by the former is nearly half of that required by the proposed approach because the traditional approach overemphasizes the demand at larger ground motion intensities. This paper proposes an origin–destination pair betweenness centrality (BC)-based methodology to rank bridges according to their importance in a complex bridge network. The proposed methodology is an easy-to-use approach that considers user equilibrium and topology and significantly shorten the computational time. In addition, this study proposes two strategies including the retrofit of bridges and construction of new bridges based on the BC importance of bridges to mitigate the seismic risk of bride networks. A well-studied bridge network in California was used to demonstrate the application and the effect of different strategies was compared in this study. Bridges located at the shortest path significantly affect the seismic performance of bridge networks, indicating there is no need to rehabilitate or replace all bridges under budget constraints. Also, constructing five new bridges based on BC importance improved seismic performance of the bridge network much more than retrofitting 21 bridges. Moreover, the proposed methodology presents a significant reduction in computational time (only 1/30 compared with an existing study) in resolving the importance of bridges in a network and can be applied to provide useful information for disaster management teams to mitigate the seismic risk of bridge networks. Globally, decentralized energy systems are gaining popularity due to their potential for energy accessibility, energy resilience, and sustainability benefits. Existing research on an energy system decentralization approach, community choice aggregation (CCA), shows its ability to lower energy costs and increase renewable electricity consumption for U.S. communities. Nevertheless, research on the relationship between CCA and distributed electricity generation development is lacking. This paper fills this gap by investigating if the CCA approach associates with distributed generation capacity interconnection in California municipalities. The finding shows that although the average capacity has increased for all municipalities throughout the study period, contrary to proponents' arguments, the CCA approach has insignificantly decreased the capacity interconnected for municipalities. It is unclear if the result is due to a lack of higher-level support for the full CCA implementation or substitution by community-owned distributed generation. Future research is necessary to determine the CCA effect comprehensively in California. However, the effect of the VSL on improving traffic efficiency is still controversial. It is necessary to study how to explore the potential benefits of the VSL by balancing its influence on reducing crash risk and enhancing traffic efficiency. To fill the technological gap above, this paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based lane-level VSL (LVSL) control approach to conduct refined traffic control on the mainlines. Firstly, an actor-critic framework is developed to generate and evaluate the discrete speed limits of each lane in continuous action space. To optimize traffic control performance, a hybrid reward function is developed by synchronously considering traffic safety and traffic efficiency of the bottleneck area. Then, to solve the overestimation bias problem of the actor-critic methods caused by function approximation error, a twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) method is introduced to train the framework of the LVSL method. Finally, a real-world recurrent bottleneck of the State Route 91 highway in California is simulated with consideration of the connected automated vehicles to examine the performance of the TD3-based LVSL (TD3LVSL) controller. The simulation results reveal that the proposed method is capable of reducing crash risk and improving traffic efficiency synchronously. Compared with the LVSL controller based on the deep deterministic policy gradient approach, the TD3LVSL controller shows better performance in terms of traffic safety and efficiency. Ever since California experienced its energy crisis two decades ago, dynamic pricing of electricity has been the topic of discussion in numerous conferences and papers. Scores of pilots involving some 400 treatments of time-varying rates have been done to assess customer response to dynamic pricing around the globe, beginning with California's Statewide Pricing Pilot that ran from 2003 to 04. In the past few years, we are witnessing large scale deployment of static time-varying rates in states such as California and Michigan. Colorado is about to embark on that journey. However, other than OG&E's deployment of dynamic pricing, we have not seen much deployment of dynamic pricing in North America. California's power outages in August 2002 have rekindled interest in the topic. But almost all of the discussion about dynamic pricing has focused on summer peaking utilities. In this paper, we discuss the experience of Hydro Quebec, a winter peaking utility in Canada. Hydro Quebec has tested both critical-peak pricing and peak-time rebates. The results are very encouraging and quite consistent with results from summer peaking utilities. The article is based on a question and answer format with Frederic Pelletier, who advises Hydro Quebec on tariff strategy. He had posted some results from their dynamic pricing deployment on LinkedIn in response to some results I had posted from three-pilots with TOU rates that had been carried out in Maryland. We studied the influence of environmental factors on the prevalence and clinical manifestations of pasteurellosis in rabbits of the California and New Zealand breeds over a period of one year. It was found that the minimum temperatures in winter and the maximum in summer were out of the optimal values: 4-7 and 16-18ᴼС, respectively. The relative humidity during most of the year was out of the recommended levels / 60-70% /, both at the average and at the maximum measured values. The concentration of ammonia exceeded the average values by about 16 mg / m³, and the maximum values by about 30 mg / m³. The dust content varied from 0.9 to 6 mg / m³ with average values of 3.6 mg / m³. The total number of isolated microflora in m³ air was 6.83 x 10³ (6.5-7.3 x 10³). Dominant in the biological material and washes / from cages, walls and inventory / were the representatives of Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pasteurella and Colibacteria; and from the molds Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, Penicillium, Alternaria and Mucor. Antibodies against Pasteurella multocida were found in 60% of the population. Exacerbation of the disease and higher mortality was observed during pregnancy and during the suckling period. The main complications were - respiratory disorders (51%) followed by inflammation of the conjunctiva. About a quarter of the affected animals (26.4%) suffered from the mixed form of the disease. We found that Inflammation of the ears was extremely rare (0.2%). A relationship has been established between the number of environmental factors and the incidence of respiratory diseases. We can conclude that environmental factors are actively involved in the development, form and severity of pasteurellosis in rabbits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Russell City, California was once a small farming settlement located near San Francisco Bay. Its population increased and demographics changed during the 1940s, when African American and Latinx families migrated to the area and became the town's majority. The hamlet was never incorporated and lacked basic utilities, yet Russell Cityans self‐governed, provided civic safety services, established churches and businesses, and sealed financial deals between neighbors. In the 1950s, however, surrounding areas began considering Russell City a blight. Newspaper articles reinforced this idea, while simultaneously detailing governmental attempts to impede Russell City's improvement efforts. In 1963, Alameda County began the forced relocation of Russell's tenants via a redevelopment project. Residents protested to no avail, and by 1968 the town was destroyed. The area is now an industrial park. Contemporary archaeology methods like archival research, oral history, material analysis, photography, and mapping are essential to understand Russell City's past. Using these approaches also enables former residents to cognitively bridge past and present, contributes to forming individual identities, fortifies community solidarity, and exposes the paradox of how living in Russell City was experienced by townspeople compared to how it was viewed by those outside its perimeters. Lastly, documenting Russell Cityans' experiences and mapping the town are acts that confront the race and class‐based systems that not only shaped their lives as well as others in similar communities across the United States, but continue to affect marginalized peoples today. • • Compressed air storage alone can firm up wind and solar variability in California. • • Increased penetration of renewable energy can decrease CAES storage requirements. • • Type of renewable energy strongly affects the required CAES capacity. • • Bulk CAES deployment has limited applications due to real-world constraints. Bulk energy storage can play an important role in the decarbonization of renewable-dominant electricity system. It can offer a solution to the grid balancing problem caused by the variability in the output of renewable power generation. This paper explores the requirement for compressed air energy storage (CAES) capacity as the penetration of renewable energy increases to compensate for the variability of wind and solar. A case study for California using parsimonious macro energy model with real-world historical demand and hourly weather data has been utilized to do this analysis. In the least-cost model, with no excess wind and solar power generation, required CAES capacity is 3.71TWh in 100% decarbonized scenario. If a strict rule of net-zero curtailment was in place, the storage capacity required would be 3.2% higher (3.83TWh) with 9.8% increased cost of electricity. However, the required CAES capacity decreases with the excess solar and wind power generation. In case of 2 times increase in the wind and solar potential the required CAES capacity with strict zero curtailment would be 19.2% less (3.10TWh) and the corresponding cost would decrease up to 29.7%. The study also revealed that the type of renewable energy mix (wind, solar or both) has strong effect on the required energy storage capacity for deep decarbonization. The presented results demonstrate that excess wind and solar power generation can be used to significantly reduce the required storage needs for a fully renewable power system at reduced cost. In California, building of a large battery energy storage (up to 3 TWh) is limited by societal, geographical, and economic constraints. This study suggests that in addition to the battery energy storage California may need to look for other dispatchable power sources (or the equivalent in load flexibility) for 100% wind and solar based fully decarbonized power system. • Machine learning can predict the in-situ hydrocarbon viscosity at a specific depth. • High-viscosity and low-viscosity samples can be differentiated at F1 Score of 0.95. • Viscosity is predicted at a mean absolute error of 27 ∓ 3 cP. • Raw white-light and filtered UV-light images are strongly associated with viscosity. • Variances of white-light RGB channels are strongly associated with viscosity. The paper implements image processing followed by supervised learning to predict the viscosity of hydrocarbon present at a specific reservoir depth in a heavy oil reservoir located in California, USA. Viscosity is predicted from white-light and UV-light images of side-wall core samples extracted from specific depths along the wellbore. The fluid viscosity primarily ranges from 5 to 600 cP at a temperature of 180 degF. The white-light and UV-light images are available for 680 side-wall core samples. Sobel, Sato, Hessian, LBP, and Multi-Otsu filters extract meaningful features from red, green, and blue pixel intensities of the white-light and UV-light images. The distribution of pixel-wise values for each filtered/raw image is further processed to derive histogram-based features. As a result, 600 features are extracted for each side-wall core sample. Thresholds based on the variance, MI score, F score, and Person's r are imposed to select the most informative features for the viscosity prediction. Compared to filtered white-light images, raw RGB white-light images have stronger viscosity association. On the contrary, filtered UV-light images have stronger viscosity association as compared to raw RGB UV-light images. Supervised learning is deployed using the resulting features in both regression and classification of target viscosity. For the prediction of continuous-valued viscosity (regression), random forest is the best performer with a mean absolute error of 27 ∓ 3 cP. For the viscosity classification, high-viscosity and low-viscosity samples can be very well detected at a F1 Weighted Score higher than 0.95 and Matthew's Correlation Score higher than 0.9. Overall, for viscosity prediction, classification is much superior to the regression. The novel image-based viscosity prediction workflow will help lower the cost and improve the precision of laboratory-based viscosity measurements and simultaneously contribute to a high-resolution reservoir model development. Agriculture dominates California's San Joaquin Valley with over five million acres of farmland produces 400 different commodities ranging from nuts, tree fruits, vines, and row crops. During dry years agricultural production in the San Joaquin Valley uses about 53% of total applied water in the state. Implementation of California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) will restrict groundwater pumping, likely reducing irrigated agricultural land use resulting in conversion to alternative land uses. To promote collaborative and inclusive efforts to repurpose agricultural land, California's legislature established a funding program administered by the Department of Conservation, the Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program (MLRP), in 2021. To ensure that land repurposing plans under the MLRP and SGMA represent San Joaquin Valley community needs this paper examines public perceptions of future land uses under SGMA through a phone survey. Respondents (n = 197) were recruited through a stratified random sample of mobile numbers registered within communities in the San Joaquin Valley classified as disadvantaged communities (DACs) (n = 32). Our results show that most respondents were somewhat (33%) or not at all (54%) familiar with SGMA, highlighting the need for outreach efforts to overcome barriers to representation, translation, and education about future water and land use decisions. Survey respondents identified secure water supplies (e.g., groundwater recharge) (35%) and less-water intensive agriculture (27%) as their top land use priorities to address groundwater overdraft under SGMA, indicating that the status quo for land use is preferred to alternative land uses. Preference for maintaining agriculture as primary land use (27%), we correlated with agricultural identity and lack of interest in community or global benefits such as schools and climate change mitigation. The findings from this study underscore the local variability in land use values and the importance to engaging local communities in land use decision-making, especially as they relate to changing current practices toward a more climate-resilient but agriculturally productive future with less land and less water. • Systematic review has been performed on Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databses, and 122 studies were appraised. • Various C&D waste materials have been reviewed to find their potential usage as subbase/base material in the pavement. • Influence of C&D waste as an alternative aggregate was assessed in terms of mechanical and durability properties. • Opportunities and drawbacks associated with the application of C&D waste in the subbase/base of pavement are discussed. • Research gaps in existing literature are critically identified and future prospectives are judiciously proposed. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste consists of debris generated from construction, repair, renovation, and demolition of bridges, roads, buildings, and other infrastructure. It has certain adverse environmental impacts resulting in the consumption of valuable land space, landfill depletion, consumption of energy, and non-energy resources, resource depletion, pollution, etc. This paper presents a systematic review of literature on research pertaining to the usage of different types of C&D wastes as aggregate in the bound and unbound subbase or base layers of pavement. The literature search on two databases, namely: Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus, resulted in 7610 records. After adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, the full text of 122 records is critically assessed. The efficacy of utilization of C&D waste in base or subbase layers in terms of mechanical and durability properties has been critically reviewed. California bearing ratio (CBR), and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) value of blended C&D waste materials are found to decrease with an increase in waste content in the mix. However, chemical stabilization could result in the enhancement of both properties. The resilient moduli for these waste materials are found to be enhanced with an increase in stabilizer dosage, curing duration, and confining pressure. Similarly, the permanent deformation of treated C&D waste materials has shown a decreasing trend with an increase in the stabilizer content. The addition of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates to the cement-treated base reduced the flexural strength but enhanced the ductile behaviour. Research gaps are identified critically and future prospectives are proposed. Evaluation of the suitability of unexplored wastes for subbase or base layers applications is suggested. The comprehensive information enlisted in this paper may serve as a guideline for adopting non-traditional aggregates in base or subbase layer construction. Further, the outcome of this investigation is expected to be beneficial to adjudge suitable construction practices to accelerate waste utilization for sustainable pavement construction. This paper proposes a simple two-step estimation method (C limate A daptive R esponse E stimation - CARE) to estimate sectoral climate damage functions, which account for long-run adaptation. The paper applies this method in the context of residential electricity and natural gas demand for the world's fifth largest economy — California. The advantage of the proposed method is that it only requires detailed information on intensive margin behavior, yet does not require explicit knowledge of the extensive margin response (e.g., technology adoption). Using almost two billion energy bills, we estimate spatially highly disaggregated intensive margin temperature response functions using daily variation in weather. In a second step, we explain variation in the slopes of the dose response functions across space as a function of summer climate. Using 18 climate models, we simulate future demand by letting households vary consumption along the intensive and extensive margins. We show that failing to account for extensive margin adjustment in electricity demand leads to a significant underestimate of the future impacts on electricity consumption. We further show that reductions in natural gas demand more than offset any climate-driven increases in electricity consumption in this context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1949–1951, ecologist Robert H. Whittaker sampled plant community composition at 470 sites in the Siskiyou Mountains (Oregon and California; also known as Klamath or Klamath‐Siskiyou Mountains). His primary goal was to develop methods to quantify plant community variation across environmental gradients, following on his seminal work challenging communities as discrete entities. He selected the Siskiyous because of their diverse and endemic‐rich flora, which he attributed to geological complexity and an ancient stable climate. He chose sites to span gradients of topography, elevation, geologic substrate, and distance from the coast. He used the frequencies of indicator species in his data to assign sampling locations to positions on the topographic gradient, nested within the elevational and substrate gradients. He originated in this study the concept of diversity partitioning, in which gamma diversity (species richness of a community) equals alpha diversity (species richness in homogeneous sites) times beta diversity (species turnover among sites along gradients). Diversity partitioning subsequently became highly influential and new developments on it continue. Whittaker published his Siskiyou work covering paleohistory, biogeography, floristics, vegetation, gradient analysis, and diversity partitioning in Ecological Monographs in 1960. Discussed in 2 pages of his 60‐page monograph, diversity partitioning accounts for >95% of its current >4300 citations. In 2006, we retrieved Whittaker's Siskiyou data in hard copy from the Cornell University archives and entered them in a database. We used these data for multiple published analyses, including some based on (re)sampling the approximate locations of a subset of his sites. Because of the continued interest in diversity partitioning and in historic data sets, here we present his data, including 359 sampling locations and their descriptors and, for each sample, a list of species with their estimated percent cover (herbs and shrubs) and numbers by diameter at breast height (DBH) category (trees). Site descriptors include the approximate location (road, trail, or stream), elevation, topographic aspect, geologic substrate (serpentine, gabbro, or diorite), and dominant woody vegetation of each location. For 111 sites, including the small number chosen to represent the distance‐to‐coast gradient, we could not locate his data. Our institution performs chemotherapy/immunotherapy competency verification on an annual basis for nursing via in person simulation of chemotherapy specific skills. In previous years, live simulation was done with our team of nursing professional development specialists (NPDS). During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, we adjusted the competency to a paper format for social distancing compliance. Feedback around the paper format was mixed, yielding a change for 2021. Utilizing technology to its fullest, we opted to transition the activity to a digital Learning Management System (LMS) platform. The purpose of this project was to implement an electronic process for validating competency of nurses who handle chemotherapy/immunotherapy. The goal is to provide easy accessibility to ensure that nurses have completed the competency requirements within the deadline and provide instant continuing education (CE) credits. The NPDS team met and reviewed feedback from the 2020 competency program to determine the best way to proceed in 2021, providing a high quality experience while maintaining social distancing protocols. Consensus was obtained to proceed with an on demand LMS module. After a careful review of safety events reported along with trends identified by NPDS as a knowledge gap, topics were selected to be the focus of 2021's chemo/immunotherapy competency. Independent verification at the bed/chairside, hazardous drug spills, sexual and reproductive health during treatment, and order set verification were identified as priority topics. Each participant will receive a link to a survey upon completion of the LMS module. Results will be tabulated and reviewed by the NPDS team to compare to previous models of competency assessment. This project was designed using the data collected in during the 2020 assessment to meet the needs created by the changing landscape of the Covid 19 pandemic. The aim is to continue to share and evaluate how we have evolved the delivery of high quality content on an annual basis. The collation of data from this year's competency will be compared with previous years and used to help us grow and develop our annual competency verification program. Using technology to assess annual chemotherapy/immunotherapy competency by building a module within our existing LMS platform. As low-cost air quality sensors become more widely utilized, more tools and methods are needed to help users access/process sensor data, identify poorly performing sensors, and analyze/visualize sensor data. Free and open-source software (FOSS) packages developed for use on FOSS data science platforms are well-suited to support this need by offering replicable and shareable tools that can be adapted to meet a user or project's specific needs. This paper describes enhancements to the FOSS AirSensor R package (version 1.0) and the DataViewer web application (version 1.0.1) that have been developed to support data access, processing, analysis, and visualization for the PurpleAir PA-II sensor. This paper also demonstrates how these enhancements may be used to track and assess the health of air sensors in real-time or for large historical datasets. The dataset used for this analysis was collected during a multi-year project (with sensors deployed from October 2017 to October 2020) involving the distribution of approximately 400 PA-II sensors across 14 communities in southern, central, and northern California. Applying the tools in the AirSensor package revealed a dramatic variability in sensor performance, mainly driven by seasonal trends or particulate matter source type. These results also indicate that this sensor can provide useful data for at least three years with little evidence of substantial or consistent drift. Further, high agreement was observed between co-located sensors deployed at different times, indicating that it may be reasonable to compare data from old and new PA-II sensors. This paper evaluates the energy performance of shallow ground source heat pumps using the state-of-art whole building energy simulation tool. In particular, the paper presents a systematic and easy to implement approach to model the energy performance of shallow and helical ground heat exchangers and assess their energy efficiency benefits to heat and cool buildings. The modeling approach is based on the implementation of G-functions, generated using a validated numerical model, in a state-of-art whole building energy simulation tool. Both the numerical model and the simulation tool are applied to assess the energy performance of various shallow geothermal systems designed to meet heating and cooling needs for detached single-family homes in California. Specifically, a series of sensitivity analyses is conducted to determine the energy performance of the shallow geothermal systems in 16 locations representing all California climate zones. It is found that the suitability and the efficiency of the shallow geothermal systems vary widely and depend on several factors including their design specifications as well as the climate conditions. Compared with conventional air-to-air heat pumps, the shallow ground source heat pumps can be more energy efficient in most climate zones in California except those locations with extreme weather conditions resulting in either heating or cooling only operation. Moreover, configurations of shallow ground source heat pumps with 16 boreholes with 6.7 m (22 ft) depth are found to be cost-effective in several California climate zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
