• Five Machine Learning (ML) models compared for wave height time series prediction. • Complex ML models do not outperform simple AR in wave height time series prediction. • Comment to related papers: signal decomposition in test set series is WRONG. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Large deep learning models are impressive, but they struggle when real-time data is not available. Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) poses a significant challenge for deep neural networks to learn new tasks from just a few labeled samples without forgetting the previously learned ones. This setup can easily leads to catastrophic forgetting and overfitting problems, severely affecting model performance. Studying FSCIL helps overcome deep learning model limitations on data volume and acquisition time, while improving practicality and adaptability of machine learning models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on FSCIL. Unlike previous surveys, we aim to synthesize few-shot learning and incremental learning, focusing on introducing FSCIL from two perspectives, while reviewing over 30 theoretical research studies and more than 20 applied research studies. From the theoretical perspective, we provide a novel categorization approach that divides the field into five subcategories, including traditional machine learning methods, meta learning-based methods, feature and feature space-based methods, replay-based methods, and dynamic network structure-based methods. We also evaluate the performance of recent theoretical research on benchmark datasets of FSCIL. From the application perspective, FSCIL has achieved impressive achievements in various fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation, as well as in natural language processing and graph. We summarize the important applications. Finally, we point out potential future research directions, including applications, problem setups, and theory development. Supervised learning in deep neural networks is commonly performed using error backpropagation. However, the sequential propagation of errors during the backward pass limits its scalability and applicability to low-powered neuromorphic hardware. Therefore, there is growing interest in finding local alternatives to backpropagation. Recently proposed methods based on forward-mode automatic differentiation suffer from high variance in large deep neural networks, which affects convergence. In this paper, we propose the Forward Direct Feedback Alignment algorithm that combines Activity-Perturbed Forward Gradients with Direct Feedback Alignment and momentum. We provide both theoretical proofs and empirical evidence that our proposed method achieves lower variance than forward gradient techniques. First, a multi-physics finite element model is established for the simulation of a long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior in basalt fiber reinforced polymer composite pipelines subjected to long-term fatigue loading of internal pressure and thermal effect. Second, theoretical model results of long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue compliance (S f (t)) over the time of creep are analyzed in pipeline material using the modulus degradation approach. Finally, an electrical potential change between electrical capacitance sensors electrodes corresponding to S f (t) over the time of creep for some levels of long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue (R f %) is recorded and then used in these datasets for training of the novel deep neural network based on one of the most widely used of the deep neural network families is the convolutional neural network, to predict S f (t) in pipeline for various R f % not included in the previous finite element model evaluation (i.e. electrical capacitance sensors technique). In this paper first is detected the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for R f % = 25 % , 50 % , and 75 % from a finite element model and modulus degradation approach, and then is predicted the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for R f % = 15 % , 35 % , 60 % , and 85 % respectively via deep neural network. The proposed method results are in good agreement with the experimental results available in the literature, thus verifying the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique and its applicability to other different composite structures. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a creep fracture life prediction method, which combines the affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm, GAN, and deep neural networks (DNN) for accurate creep fracture life prediction. The AP clustering algorithm for adaptive clustering was utilized to better reflect the creep sample distribution. Independent GAN models were trained for each cluster to better capture distribution characteristics of the data and generate synthetic data that was highly similar to the real data. The DNN models were trained using the synthetic data and then predicted using real creep fracture life data. The presented method was compared with traditional physical and machine learning methods, and the method combining K-Means, GAN, and DNN. Wind power is a critical source of renewable energy, but the variability of wind speed can impact the efficiency and reliability of wind power generation. To improve the accuracy of wind speed prediction, this paper proposes a novel system that combines deep learning and decomposition algorithms based on ensemble optimization methods. Firstly, the paper proposes an innovative hybrid modal decomposition (HMD) method that extracts accurate features from wind speed data using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), modal number selection method, and Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD). Secondly, the variable screening method identifies relevant factors affecting wind speed as fixed inputs. Then, the stationary test method is used to identify the sequences of different features in the mode and establish different prediction models: a bidirectional long-term short-time neural network model (Bi-LSTM) model optimized by artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) is used for non-stationary sequences; an ARIMA model is used for stationary sequences. Data from Sotavento and Changma wind farms are used to test this forecasting system. Simulation experiments are carried out from multiple dimensions. Marine ecosystems and their fish habitats are becoming increasingly important due to their integral role in providing a valuable food source and conservation outcomes. Due to their remote and difficult to access nature, marine environments and fish habitats are often monitored using underwater cameras to record videos and images for understanding fish life and ecology, as well as for preserve the environment. There are currently many permanent underwater camera systems deployed at different places around the globe. In addition, there exists numerous studies that use temporary cameras to survey fish habitats. These cameras generate a massive volume of digital data, which cannot be efficiently analysed by current manual processing methods, which involve a human observer. Deep Learning (DL) is a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that has demonstrated unprecedented performance in analysing visual data. Despite its application to a myriad of domains, its use in underwater fish habitat monitoring remains under explored. In this paper, we provide a tutorial that covers the key concepts of DL, which help the reader grasp a high-level understanding of how DL works. The tutorial also explains a step-by-step procedure on how DL algorithms should be developed for challenging applications such as underwater fish monitoring. In addition, we provide a comprehensive survey of key deep learning techniques for fish habitat monitoring including classification, counting, localisation, and segmentation. Furthermore, we survey publicly available underwater fish datasets, and compare various DL techniques in the underwater fish monitoring domains. We also discuss some challenges and opportunities in the emerging field of deep learning for fish habitat processing. This paper is written to serve as a tutorial for marine scientists who would like to grasp a high-level understanding of DL, develop it for their applications by following our step-by-step tutorial, and see how it is evolving to facilitate their research efforts. Extensive research has been conducted on analyzing human movements, driven by its diverse practical applications such as human–robot interaction, human learning, and clinical diagnosis. However, the current state-of-the-art still encounters scientific challenges when it comes to modeling human movements. There are two key aspects that need to be addressed. Firstly, new models should consider the stochastic nature of human movement and the physical structure of the human body to accurately predict the patterns in full-body motion descriptors over time. Secondly, while deep learning algorithms have been utilized, they lack explainability in terms of predicting body posture sequences, making it essential to improve their comprehensible representation of human movement. This paper aims to tackle these challenges by presenting three innovative methods for creating explainable representations of human movement. The study formulates human body movement as a state-space model based on the Gesture Operational Model (GOM). Model parameters are estimated through either one-shot training employing Kalman Filters or data-intensive training utilizing artificial neural networks. The trained models are utilized for analyzing the dexterity of expert professionals in full-body movements, enabling the identification of dynamic associations between body joints and gesture recognition. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gained immense popularity in recent years, finding their utility in diverse fields such as image recognition, natural language processing, and bio-informatics. Despite the remarkable progress made in deep learning theory, most studies on CNNs, especially in regression tasks, tend to heavily rely on the least squares loss function. However, there are situations where such learning algorithms may not suffice, particularly in the presence of heavy-tailed noises or outliers. This predicament emphasizes the necessity of exploring alternative loss functions that can handle such scenarios more effectively, thereby unleashing the true potential of CNNs. In this paper, we investigate the generalization error of deep CNNs with the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function for robust regression problems within an information-theoretic learning framework. Our study demonstrates that when the regression function exhibits an additive ridge structure and the noise possesses a finite p th moment, the empirical risk minimization scheme, generated by the maximum correntropy criterion and deep CNNs, achieves fast convergence rates. Notably, these rates align with the mini-max optimal convergence rates attained by fully connected neural network model with the Huber loss function up to a logarithmic factor. Additionally, we further establish the convergence rates of deep CNNs under the maximum correntropy criterion when the regression function resides in a Sobolev space on the sphere. With the significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, more attention has been given to PV power forecasting. Indeed, accurate forecasting allows power grid operators to better schedule and dispatch their assets, such as energy storage systems and reserve. In this paper, a hybrid deep learning model and a convolutional neural network with memory is proposed, to provide intraday (2 h) solar irradiance forecasts using sequentially-collected images from public webcams. The performance of the proposed model is compared to those of a standard time-series forecast models, a linear regression as well as state-of-the-art neural networks. All models are trained and tested using images collected from two webcams on EPFL's campus for just over a year. With the increasing impact of climate change and relative sea level rise, low-lying coastal communities face growing risks from recurrent nuisance flooding and storm tides. Thus, timely and reliable predictions of coastal water levels are critical to resilience in vulnerable coastal areas. Over the past decade, there has been increasing interest in utilizing machine learning (ML) based models for emulation and prediction of coastal water levels. However, flood advisory systems still rely on running computationally demanding hydrodynamic models. To alleviate the computational burden, these physics-based models are either run at small scales with high resolution or at large scales with low resolution. While ML-based models are very fast, they face challenges in terms of ensuring reliability and ability to capture any surge levels. In this paper, we develop a deep neural network for spatiotemporal prediction of water levels in coastal areas of the Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. Our model relies on data from numerical weather prediction models as the atmospheric input and astronomical tide levels, while its outputs are time series of predicted water levels at several tide gauge locations across the Chesapeake Bay. We utilized a CNN-LSTM setting as the architecture of the model. The CNN part extracts the features from a sequence of gridded wind fields and fuses its output to several independent LSTM units. The LSTM units concatenate the atmospheric features with respective astronomical tide levels and produce water level time series. The novel contribution of the present work is in spatiotemporality and in prioritization of the physical relationships in the model to maintain a high analogy to hydrodynamic modeling, either in the network architecture or in the selection of predictors and predictands. The results show that this setting yields a strong performance in predicting coastal water levels that cause flooding from minor to major levels. We also show that the model stands up successfully to the rigorous comparison with a high-fidelity ADCIRC model, yielding mean RMSE and correlation coefficient of 14.3 cm and 0.94, respectively, in two extreme cases, versus 12.30 cm and 0.96 for the ADCIRC model. In this paper, we present the use of deep neural networks to estimate physical parameters from complex optical emission spectra of the D β /H β transition. Specifically, we focus on estimating the radio frequency electric field vector of the lower hybrid wave and isotope ratio within the scrape-off-layer plasma of the WEST tokamak. Fitting the spectral data using a traditional non-linear least squares analysis requires many free parameters and is computationally expensive, rendering the data unusable for real-time control. By implementing relatively small neural networks, the physical parameters can be directly extracted from the spectral data with reasonable accuracy in a few milliseconds. The deep neural network prediction can serve as input for a reduced model using least-squares fitting or for real-time control. During the last few decades, industries such as aerospace and wind energy (among others) have been remarkably influenced by the introduction of high-performance composites. One challenge, however, for modeling and designing composites is the lack of computational efficiency of accurate high-fidelity models. For design purposes, using conventional optimization approaches typically results in cumbersome procedures due to huge dimensions of the design space and high computational expense of full-field simulations. In recent years, deep learning techniques have been found to be promising methods to increase the efficiency and robustness of a variety of algorithms in multi-scale modeling and design of composites. In this perspective paper, a short overview of the recent developments in micromechanics-based machine learning for composites is given. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are brain-inspired models that utilize discrete and sparse spikes to transmit information, thus having the property of energy efficiency. Recent advances in learning algorithms have greatly improved SNN performance due to the automation of feature engineering. While the choice of neural architecture plays a significant role in deep learning, the current SNN architectures are mainly designed manually, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. In this paper, we propose a spiking neural architecture search (NAS) method that can automatically find efficient SNNs. To tackle the challenge of long search time faced by SNNs when utilizing NAS, the proposed NAS encodes candidate architectures in a branchless spiking supernet which significantly reduces the computation requirements in the search process. Considering that real-world tasks prefer efficient networks with optimal accuracy under a limited computational budget, we propose a Synaptic Operation (SynOps)-aware optimization to automatically find the computationally efficient subspace of the supernet. Experimental results show that, in less search time, our proposed NAS can find SNNs with higher accuracy and lower computational cost than state-of-the-art SNNs. This paper is focused on the application of the machine learning for predicting structural response of ring stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to far-field underwater explosion. Three deep neural network (DNN) models are combined to predict the progressive plastic deformation behaviour of stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to the shock wave produced by a TNT charge. In the DNN regression models, the input variables include the charge mass, stand-off distance, detonation depth, cylindrical shell thickness, stiffener web and flange. These three DNN models composed of multi hidden layers are trained based on the data collection originated from a series of simulations performed by the ABAQUS finite element solver. Grid search is introduced to the hyperparameter tuning for deep learning, improving the prediction performance of machine learning methods. The DNN models are compared to the models trained using another three methods: multiple linear regression, decision tree and k-nearest neighbour. An improved Adam optimisation algorithm is used to increase the accuracy of prediction. The challenges encountered during the predictions are discussed to provide a more comprehensive insight into the advantage of the proposed DNN models. • Soil reflectance composites were generated with Sentinel-2 L2A data. • A multi-channel CNN learning framework for soil organic carbon prediction is proposed. • A dual input deep learning architecture improves the predictions. • The framework produced results that can be interpreted. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery data may be aggregated to extract large-scale, bare soil, reflectance composites, which enable soil mapping applications. In this paper, this approach was tested in the German federal state of Bavaria, to provide estimations for soil organic carbon (SOC). Different temporal ranges were considered for the generation of the composites, including multi-annual and seasonal ranges. A novel multi-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. By leveraging the advantages of deep learning techniques, it utilizes complementary information from different spectral pre-treatment techniques. The SOC predictions indicated little dissimilarity amongst the different composites, with the best performance attained for the six-year composite containing only spring months (RMSE = 12.03 g C · kg−1, R2 = 0.64, RPIQ = 0.89). It has been demonstrated that these outcomes outperform other well-known machine learning techniques. An ablation analysis was accordingly performed to evaluate the interplay of the CNN's different components to disentangle the advantages of each aspect of the proposed framework. Finally, a DUal inPut deep LearnIng architecture, named DUPLICITE, is proposed, which concatenates deep spectral features derived from the CNN mentioned earlier, as well as topographical and environmental covariates through an artificial neural network (ANN) to exploit their complementarity. This paper presents an effective and accurate method to analyze the network traffic risk of enterprise public cloud financial system by using deep learning algorithm. To build the analytical model, the collected data is preprocessed to extract relevant features that contribute to risk analysis. The pre-processed data is used to train the deep learning model. The model is designed to learn patterns and relationships in network traffic data. The network traffic risk analysis module is constructed by combining the deep learning model with the system architecture of the enterprise public cloud financial system. Through a trained deep learning model, the module is able to accurately identify abnormal behavior in network traffic and provide corresponding risk assessments. Performances are a key concern in aerospace vehicles, requiring safer structures with as little consumption as possible. Composite materials replaced aluminum alloys even in primary aerospace structures to achieve higher performances with lighter components. However, random events such as low-velocity impacts may induce damages that are typically more dangerous and mostly not visible than metals. The damage tolerance (DT) approach is adopted for the fatigue design of aircraft, but fracture mechanisms and propagation of failure prediction in composite structures are much more challenging. Consequently, the DT approach is still costly for these types of structures. It can be achieved only through expensive experimental testing and a drastic reduction of allowable stress levels and maintenance intervals by applying scattering factors due to the uncertainties involved in their original estimations. Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems deal mainly with sensorised structures providing signals related to their "load and health status" to reduce maintenance and weights. At the same time, the use of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) based on strategic engineering criteria, for instance, may represent an effective and efficient analysis tool to promote faster data analysis and classification. In the field of aircraft maintenance, this approach may lead, for example, to a faster awareness of an aircraft/fleet situation or predict failures. Deep learning-based networks provide automatic feature extraction at different levels of abstraction. With the universal function approximation property of neural networks, it learns the inverse mapping from input space (signals) to target space (damage classes). Starting from the well-established Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies, a network of distributed sensors embedded throughout the structure could be used for real-time structural monitoring and data acquisition. Structural data will constitute an enormous amount of information that can be adequately filtered with the help of specific DNNs designed and trained for the structural context and aimed to classify and identify significant parameters. The authors have collaborated for some years to collect wave propagation signals through experimental tests and validated numerical models of healthy and damaged composite structures, and developed machine learning algorithms (mainly dense and convolutional neural networks) aimed at signal classification and analysis for damage detection and localization. This paper presents a brief review of relevant works about SHM employing Machine Learning methodologies and summarizes the most promising approaches developed during the last years jointly by the two research groups and presents a critical analysis of obtained results and subsequent future activities. Simulation-driven structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for enhancing the safety and reliability of structures. Its primary aim is to utilize numerical simulations to design efficient SHM systems, reducing costs while maintaining effectiveness. However, challenges arise due to disparities between simulations and physical measurements, stemming from uncertainties, noise, and simplifications. These challenges also extend to SHM methods using machine learning, particularly deep neural networks (DNNs). This paper bridges the gap between DNNs trained on simulated data and real-world experiments by investigating three transfer learning (TL) techniques: feature augmentation, direct fine-tuning, and boosting-based fine-tuning. The focus is on guided wave damage interaction coefficients (WDICs) as damage-sensitive features, modeled by DNNs for damage identification in thin plates, commonly found in aerospace structures like aircraft fuselages. This classification task compares measured and predicted WDICs in a common guided wave SHM configuration with one actuator and three sensors. Training and extensive testing datasets are generated using advanced finite element simulations and laser Doppler vibrometer experiments. The study demonstrates that TL techniques significantly enhance DNN prediction accuracy and improve damage identification performance for untrained scenarios compared to purely simulation-based DNNs. Among the TL approaches explored, feature augmentation with appropriate activation functions and boosting-based fine-tuning yield the most promising results. Using four out of twelve TL datasets, feature augmentation reduces the simulation-based mean absolute percentage error from 46.80% to 35.98% and increases coefficient of determination R 2 values from 0.02 to 0.72. With six TL datasets and a boosting-based fine tuning, the mean absolute percentage error decreases from 47.42% to 35.20%, maintaining similar R 2 values. While TL substantially enhances prediction accuracy, its impact on damage identification is slightly less pronounced, with improvements in relative classification accuracy by approximately 5% compared to simulation-based DNNs. These findings highlight the efficacy of TL techniques for damage identification in thin plates using WDICs and DNNs, emphasizing the influence of TL training and DNN model variations. Online social networks can be used for mental healthcare monitoring using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques for detecting various mental health disorders and corresponding risk assessment. Recent research in this domain has primarily been focused on leveraging deep neural networks and various Transformer based Large Language Models, which have now become state-of-the-art for most natural language processing and computational linguistic tasks due to their unmatched prediction accuracy. Unlike conventional machine learning algorithms, these deep neural networks are black box architectures, where it is difficult to interpret and explain their predicted outcome. However, a black box classification outcome is insufficient for healthcare applications. Such systems will not be widely adopted and trusted by healthcare practitioners if they are not able to understand and explain the reasoning behind the predicted decisions made by an AI and ML based healthcare diagnostic system. The key objective of our research is to demonstrate the applications of model agnostic, post hoc surrogate XAI techniques for providing explainability to classification decisions of pretrained LLMs (Transformers) based mental healthcare diagnostic systems fine-tuned (or trained) to detect depressive and suicidal behavior using UGC from online social networks. For this, we have used the two most recent and popular techniques, SHAP and LIME. We have conducted extensive and in-depth experiments with four datasets and six pretrained LLMs, three of which have already been domain-adapted using mental health related datasets. We have also performed Few Shot Learning experiments with these three pretrained mental health domain-adapted LLMs. The results of qualitative and descriptive data analysis in this paper demonstrate that in order to build a comprehensive understanding of a person's psychological state, emotion, and behavior and to discover the causes, symptoms, and triggers of mental health issues, it is essential to utilize e X pl AI nable (XAI) techniques with Transformer based LLMs (supervised). This paper presents a plan for preparing for changes in the business environment by analyzing and predicting business district data in Seoul. The COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis caused by inflation have led to an increase in store closures and a decrease in sales, which has had a significant impact on commercial districts. The number of stores and sales are critical factors that directly affect the business environment and can help prepare for changes. This study conducted correlation analysis to extract factors related to the commercial district's environment in Seoul and estimated the number of stores and sales based on these factors. Using the Kendaltau correlation coefficient, the study found that existing population and working population were the most influential factors. Linear regression, tensor decomposition, Factorization Machine, and deep neural network models were used to estimate the number of stores and sales, with the deep neural network model showing the best performance in RMSE and evaluation indicators. This study also predicted the number of stores and sales of the service industry in a specific area using the population prediction results of the neural prophet model. The study's findings can help identify commercial district information and predict the number of stores and sales based on location, industry, and influencing factors, contributing to the revitalization of commercial districts. Robustness has become an important consideration in deep learning. With the help of explainable AI, mismatches between an explained model's decision strategy and the user's domain knowledge (e.g. Clever Hans effects) have been identified as a starting point for improving faulty models. However, it is less clear what to do when the user and the explanation agree. In this paper, we demonstrate that acceptance of explanations by the user is not a guarantee for a machine learning model to be robust against Clever Hans effects, which may remain undetected. Such hidden flaws of the model can nevertheless be mitigated, and we demonstrate this by contributing a new method, Explanation-Guided Exposure Minimization (EGEM), that preemptively prunes variations in the ML model that have not been the subject of positive explanation feedback. Experiments demonstrate that our approach leads to models that strongly reduce their reliance on hidden Clever Hans strategies, and consequently achieve higher accuracy on new data. • Explainable AI may not detect all Clever Hans effects in practical ML scenarios. • Hidden Clever Hans effects can be mitigated using Exposure Minimization. • We propose a solution in the form of a soft-pruning scheme on network activations. • We demonstrate the practical benefits of our approach on image and text data. Digital whole slides images contain an enormous amount of information providing a strong motivation for the development of automated image analysis tools. Particularly deep neural networks show high potential with respect to various tasks in the field of digital pathology. However, a limitation is given by the fact that typical deep learning algorithms require (manual) annotations in addition to the large amounts of image data, to enable effective training. Multiple instance learning exhibits a powerful tool for training deep neural networks in a scenario without fully annotated data. These methods are particularly effective in the domain of digital pathology, due to the fact that labels for whole slide images are often captured routinely, whereas labels for patches, regions, or pixels are not. This potential resulted in a considerable number of publications, with the vast majority published in the last four years. Besides the availability of digitized data and a high motivation from the medical perspective, the availability of powerful graphics processing units exhibits an accelerator in this field. In this paper, we provide an overview of widely and effectively used concepts of (deep) multiple instance learning approaches and recent advancements. State estimation is a critical process in modern power system control centers that operate under strict real-time requirements. Among its key post-processing components are bad data detection and identification, with the latter being more complex and potentially compromising the system's real-time performance. This paper proposes a novel component in the state estimation process called Anomaly Detection and Identification Module (ADIM), whose goal is to detect anomalies, or erroneous data points, prior to the state estimation process. Our work presents a deep learning-based method that exhibits a commendable level of accuracy in detecting anomalies within a continuous stream of measurements. ADIM's capabilities are demonstrated through comprehensive experiments on a set of test cases that effectively encompass various network configurations, transformer types, and load scenarios. It is shown that ADIM can detect and identify anomalies effectively, significantly reducing the need for the bad data detection component and improving overall state estimation responsiveness. One of the most important features of a reliable power system is its capability to supply the demand continuously. This continuous supply has been maintained by the transient stability of the system against large disturbances. The study of this type of stability is examined through different indicators. One of the common indicators to evaluate the transient stability of the power system is the well-known Critical Clearing Time (CCT) index. Conventional methods for calculating CCT have presented good accuracy, however, their computational cost is very high which makes them not suitable for real-time applications and real large-scale networks. Considering their ability to feature extraction of big data, deep neural networks can be utilized as reliable tools to cover these deficiencies. In this regard, to cover the shortcomings of the conventional methods, this paper proposes a method based on deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to estimate the CCT index in real-time power system applications. Moreover, to analyze a realistic case, nonlinear limiters of the excitation systems which have a considerable effect on transient stability index are considered in this study. Thanks to the using of several deep layers and the comprehensive established database, the accuracy of proposed method is appropriately high. The easy and accurate identification of varieties is fundamental in agriculture, especially in the olive sector, where more than 1200 olive varieties are currently known worldwide. Varietal misidentification leads to many potential problems for all actors in the sector: farmers and nursery workers may establish the incorrect variety, leading to maladaptation in the field; olive oil and table olive producers may label and sell a nonauthentic product; consumers may be misled; and breeders may commit errors during targeted crossings between different varieties. To date, the standard for varietal identification and certification consists of two methods: morphological classification and genetic analysis. The morphological classification consists of the visual pairwise comparison of different organs of the olive tree, where the most important organ is considered to be the endocarp. In contrast, different methods for genetic classification exist (RAPDs, SSR, and SNP). Both classification methods present advantages and disadvantages. Visual morphological classification requires highly specialized personnel and is prone to human error. Genetic identification methods are more accurate but incur a high cost and are difficult to implement. This paper introduces OliVaR, a novel approach to olive varietal identification. OliVaR used a teacher–student deep learning architecture to learn the defining characteristics of the endocarp of each specific olive variety and perform varietal classification. We construct what is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest olive variety dataset to date, comprising image data for 131 varieties from the Mediterranean basin.
