Medical image diagnosis using deep learning has shown significant promise in clinical medicine. However, it often encounters two major difficulties in real-world applications: (1) domain shift, which invalidates the trained model on new datasets, and (2) class imbalance problems leading to model biases towards majority classes. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a transfer learning solution, named Dynamic Weighting Translation Transfer Learning (DTTL), for imbalanced medical image classification. The approach is grounded in information and entropy theory and comprises three modules: Cross-domain Discriminability Adaptation (CDA), Dynamic Domain Translation (DDT), and Balanced Target Learning (BTL). CDA connects discriminative feature learning between source and target domains using a synthetic discriminability loss and a domain-invariant feature learning loss. The DDT unit develops a dynamic translation process for imbalanced classes between two domains, utilizing a confidence-based selection approach to select the most useful synthesized images to create a pseudo-labeled balanced target domain. Finally, the BTL unit performs supervised learning on the reassembled target set to obtain the final diagnostic model. This paper delves into maximizing the entropy of class distributions, while simultaneously minimizing the cross-entropy between the source and target domains to reduce domain discrepancies. By incorporating entropy concepts into our framework, our method not only significantly enhances medical image classification in practical settings but also innovates the application of entropy and information theory within deep learning and medical image processing realms. The census and management of hazard-bearing entities, along with the integrity of data quality, form crucial foundations for disaster risk assessment and zoning. By addressing the challenge of feature confusion, prevalent in single remotely sensed image recognition methods, this paper introduces a novel method, Spatially Constrained Deep Learning (SCDL), that combines deep learning with spatial constraint strategies for the extraction of disaster-bearing bodies, focusing on dams as a typical example. The methodology involves the creation of a dam dataset using a database of dams, followed by the training of YOLOv5, Varifocal Net, Faster R-CNN, and Cascade R-CNN models. These models are trained separately, and highly confidential dam location information is extracted through parameter thresholding. Furthermore, three spatial constraint strategies are employed to mitigate the impact of other factors, particularly confusing features, in the background region. To assess the method's applicability and efficiency, Qinghai Province serves as the experimental area, with dam images from the Google Earth Pro database used as validation samples. The experimental results demonstrate that the recognition accuracy of SCDL reaches 94.73%, effectively addressing interference from background factors. Notably, the proposed method identifies six dams not recorded in the GOODD database, while also detecting six dams in the database that were previously unrecorded. Additionally, four dams misdirected in the database are corrected, contributing to the enhancement and supplementation of the global dam geo-reference database and providing robust support for disaster risk assessment. Since plant diseases occurring during the growth process are a significant factor leading to the decline in both yield and quality, the classification and detection of plant leaf diseases, followed by timely prevention and control measures, are crucial for safeguarding plant productivity and quality. As the traditional convolutional neural network structure cannot effectively recognize similar plant leaf diseases, in order to more accurately identify the diseases on plant leaves, this paper proposes an effective plant disease image recognition method aECA-ResNet34. This method is based on ResNet34, and in the first and the last layers of this network, respectively, we add this paper's improved aECAnet with the symmetric structure. aECA-ResNet34 is compared with different plant disease classification models on the peanut dataset constructed in this paper and the open-source PlantVillage dataset. The experimental results show that the aECA-ResNet34 model proposed in this paper has higher accuracy, better performance, and better robustness. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of artificial self-awareness mechanisms and self-reflection abilities in deep neural networks. While the current limitations of research prevent achieving cognitive capabilities on par with natural biological entities, the incorporation of basic self-awareness and self-reflection mechanisms in deep learning architectures offers substantial advantages in tackling specific problems across various scientific fields, including geosciences. In the first section, we outline the foundational architecture of our deep learning approach termed Self-Aware Learning (SAL). The subsequent part of the paper highlights the practical benefits of this machine learning methodology through synthetic tests and applications addressed to automatic classification and image analysis of real petrological data sets. Deep learning technology has made significant progress in agricultural image recognition tasks, but the parameter adjustment of deep models usually requires a lot of manual intervention, which is time-consuming and inefficient. To solve this challenge, this paper proposes an adaptive parameter tuning strategy that combines sine–cosine algorithm with Tent chaotic mapping to enhance sea horse optimization, which improves the search ability and convergence stability of standard sea horse optimization algorithm (SHO). Through adaptive optimization, this paper determines the best parameter configuration in ResNet-50 neural network and optimizes the model performance. The improved ESHO algorithm shows superior optimization effects than other algorithms in various performance indicators. The improved model achieves 96.7% accuracy in the corn disease image recognition task, and 96.4% accuracy in the jade fungus image recognition task. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the trade-offs between a physically constrained neural network and a deep, convolutional neural network and to design a combined ML approach ("VarioCNN"). Our solution is provided in the framework of a cyberinfrastructure that includes a newly designed ML software, GEOCLASS-image (v1.0), modern high-resolution satellite image data sets (Maxar WorldView data), and instructions/descriptions that may facilitate solving similar spatial classification problems. Combining the advantages of the physically-driven connectionist-geostatistical classification method with those of an efficient CNN, VarioCNN provides a means for rapid and efficient extraction of complex geophysical information from submeter resolution satellite imagery. A retraining loop overcomes the difficulties of creating a labeled training data set. Computational analyses and developments are centered on a specific, but generalizable, geophysical problem: The classification of crevasse types that form during the surge of a glacier system. A surge is a glacial catastrophe, an acceleration of a glacier to typically 100–200 times its normal velocity. GEOCLASS-image is applied to study the current (2016-2024) surge in the Negribreen Glacier System, Svalbard. This paper aims to enhance the existing Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technologies for utilities in the public services sector, such as water, electricity, and gas, by allowing users to regularly upload images of their meters, which are then automatically processed by machines for digit recognition. We propose an end-to-end AMR approach designed explicitly for unconstrained environments, offering practical solutions to common failures encountered during the automatic recognition process, such as image blur, perspective distortion, partial reflection, poor lighting, missing digits, and intermediate digit states, to reduce the failure rate of automatic meter readings. The system's first stage involves checking the quality of the user-uploaded images through the SVM method and requesting re-uploads for images unsuitable for digit extraction and recognition. The second stage employs deep learning models for digit localization and recognition, automatically detecting and correcting issues such as missing and intermediate digits to enhance the accuracy of automatic meter readings. Our research established a gas meter training dataset comprising 52,000 images, extensively annotated across various degrees, to train the deep learning models for high-precision digit recognition. Experimental results demonstrate that, with the simple SVM model, an accuracy of 87.03% is achieved for the classification of blurry image types. In addition, meter digit recognition (including intermediate digit states) can reach 97.6% (mAP), and the detection and correction of missing digits can be as high as 63.64%, showcasing the practical application value of the system developed in this study. This paper proposes a new method for recognizing, extracting, and processing Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns from two-dimensional plots to identify specific defect types affecting electrical equipment without human intervention while retaining the principals that make PRPD analysis an effective diagnostic technique. The proposed method does not rely on training complex deep learning algorithms which demand substantial computational resources and extensive datasets that can pose significant hurdles for the application of on-line partial discharge monitoring. Instead, the developed Cosine Cluster Net (CCNet) model, which is an image processing pipeline, can extract and process patterns from any two-dimensional PRPD plot before employing the cosine similarity function to measure the likeness of the patterns to predefined templates of known defect types. The PRPD pattern recognition capabilities of the model were tested using several manually classified PRPD images available in the existing literature. The model consistently produced similarity scores that identified the same defect type as the one from the manual classification. The successful defect type reporting from the initial trials of the CCNet model together with the speed of the identification, which typically does not exceed four seconds, indicates potential for real-time applications. Image watermarking often involves the use of handheld devices under non-structured conditions for authentication purposes, particularly in the print-cam process where smartphone cameras are used to capture watermarked printed images. However, these images frequently suffer from perspective distortions, making them unsuitable for automated information detection. To address this issue, Cam-Unet, an end-to-end neural network architecture, is presented to predict the mapping from distorted images to rectified ones, specifically tailored for print-cam challenges applied to ID images. Given the limited availability of large-scale real datasets containing ground truth distortions, we created an extensive synthetic dataset by subjecting undistorted images to print-cam attacks. The proposed network is trained on this dataset, using various data augmentation techniques to improve its generalization capabilities. Accordingly, this paper presents an image watermarking system for the print-cam process. The approach combines Fourier transform-based watermarking with Cam-Unet as perspective distortion correction. Polarimetric features extracted from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images contain abundant back-scattering information about objects. Utilizing this information for PolSAR image classification can improve accuracy and enhance object monitoring. In this paper, a deep learning classification method based on polarimetric channel power features for PolSAR is proposed. The distinctive characteristic of this method is that the polarimetric features input into the deep learning network are the power values of polarimetric channels and contain complete polarimetric information. The other two input data schemes are designed to compare the proposed method. The neural network can utilize the extracted polarimetric features to classify images, and the classification accuracy analysis is employed to compare the strengths and weaknesses of the power-based scheme. It is worth mentioning that the polarized characteristics of the data input scheme mentioned in this article have been derived through rigorous mathematical deduction, and each polarimetric feature has a clear physical meaning. By testing different data input schemes on the Gaofen-3 (GF-3) PolSAR image, the experimental results show that the method proposed in this article outperforms existing methods and can improve the accuracy of classification to a certain extent, validating the effectiveness of this method in large-scale area classification. The development of medical image classification models necessitates a substantial number of labeled images for model training. In real-world scenarios, sample sizes are typically limited and labeled samples often constitute only a small portion of the dataset. This paper aims to investigate a collaborative similarity learning strategy that optimizes pseudo-labels to enhance model accuracy and expedite its convergence, known as the joint similarity learning framework. By integrating semantic similarity and instance similarity, the pseudo-labels are mutually refined to ensure their quality during initial training. Furthermore, the similarity score is utilized as a weight to guide samples away from misclassification predictions during the classification process. To enhance the model's generalization ability, an adaptive consistency constraint is introduced into the loss function to improve performance on untrained datasets. The model achieved a satisfactory accuracy of 93.65% at 80% labeling ratio, comparable to supervised learning methods' performance. Even with very low labeling ratio (e.g., 5%), the model still attained an accuracy of 74.28%. Comparison with other techniques such as Mean Teacher and FixMatch revealed that our approach significantly outperforms them in medical image classification tasks through improving accuracy by approximately 2%, demonstrating this framework's leadership in medical image classification. In recent years, deep learning methods have achieved remarkable success in hyperspectral image classification (HSIC), and the utilization of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has proven to be highly effective. However, there are still several critical issues that need to be addressed in the HSIC task, such as the lack of labeled training samples, which constrains the classification accuracy and generalization ability of CNNs. To address this problem, a deep multi-scale attention fusion network (DMAF-NET) is proposed in this paper. This network is based on multi-scale features and fully exploits the deep features of samples from multiple levels and different perspectives with an aim to enhance HSIC results using limited samples. The innovation of this article is mainly reflected in three aspects: Firstly, a novel baseline network for multi-scale feature extraction is designed with a pyramid structure and densely connected 3D octave convolutional network enabling the extraction of deep-level information from features at different granularities. Secondly, a multi-scale spatial–spectral attention module and a pyramidal multi-scale channel attention module are designed, respectively. This allows modeling of the comprehensive dependencies of coordinates and directions, local and global, in four dimensions. Finally, a multi-attention fusion module is designed to effectively combine feature mappings extracted from multiple branches. Learning in neural networks with locally-tuned neuron models such as radial Basis Function (RBF) networks is often seen as instable, in particular when multi-layered architectures are used. Furthermore, universal approximation theorems for single-layered RBF networks are very well established; therefore, deeper architectures are theoretically not required. Consequently, RBFs are mostly used in a single-layered manner. However, deep neural networks have proven their effectiveness on many different tasks. In this paper, we show that deeper RBF architectures with multiple radial basis function layers can be designed together with efficient learning schemes. We introduce an initialization scheme for deep RBF networks based on k-means clustering and covariance estimation. We further show how to make use of convolutions to speed up the calculation of the Mahalanobis distance in a partially connected way, which is similar to the convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Finally, we evaluate our approach on image classification as well as speech emotion recognition tasks. Hyperspectral image classification (HSIC) has garnered increasing attention among researchers. While classical networks like convolution neural networks (CNNs) have achieved satisfactory results with the advent of deep learning, they are confined to processing local information. Vision transformers, despite being effective at establishing long-distance dependencies, face challenges in extracting high-representation features for high-dimensional images. In this paper, we present the multiscale efficient attention with enhanced feature transformer (MEA-EFFormer), which is designed for the efficient extraction of spectral–spatial features, leading to effective classification. MEA-EFFormer employs a multiscale efficient attention feature extraction module to initially extract 3D convolution features and applies effective channel attention to refine spectral information. Following this, 2D convolution features are extracted and integrated with local binary pattern (LBP) spatial information to augment their representation. Then, the processed features are fed into a spectral–spatial enhancement attention (SSEA) module that facilitates interactive enhancement of spectral–spatial information across the three dimensions. Finally, these features undergo classification through a transformer encoder. Simple Summary: In response to the quantitative demand for the practical deployment of applications and the need to enhance the detection accuracy of wildlife in complex field environments in southwest China and neighboring regions, we have refined the wildlife detection algorithm based on re-parameterized convolution. This refinement is specifically targeted at addressing the challenges posed by the low quality of wildlife images captured by camera traps and the limitations of traditional object detection algorithms in feature extraction capability. To address these issues, we have introduced a series of improvement schemes. As a result of these enhancements, there has been a noteworthy improvement in both the accuracy of wildlife detection and the speed of model inference. This advancement offers a convenient and efficient method for the preliminary detection in the context of automated wildlife monitoring. To autonomously detect wildlife images captured by camera traps on a platform with limited resources and address challenges such as filtering out photos without optimal objects, as well as classifying and localizing species in photos with objects, we introduce a specialized wildlife object detector tailored for camera traps. This detector is developed using a dataset acquired by the Saola Working Group (SWG) through camera traps deployed in Vietnam and Laos. Utilizing the YOLOv6-N object detection algorithm as its foundation, the detector is enhanced by a tailored optimizer for improved model performance. We deliberately introduce asymmetric convolutional branches to enhance the feature characterization capability of the Backbone network. Additionally, we streamline the Neck and use CIoU loss to improve detection performance. For quantitative deployment, we refine the RepOptimizer to train a pure VGG-style network. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method empowers the model to achieve an 88.3% detection accuracy on the wildlife dataset in this paper. This accuracy is 3.1% higher than YOLOv6-N, and surpasses YOLOv7-T and YOLOv8-N by 5.5% and 2.8%, respectively. The model consistently maintains its detection performance even after quantization to the INT8 precision, achieving an inference speed of only 6.15 ms for a single image on the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX device. The improvements we introduce excel in tasks related to wildlife image recognition and object localization captured by camera traps, providing practical solutions to enhance wildlife monitoring and facilitate efficient data acquisition. This paper discusses the challenges of the hyperparameter tuning in deep learning models and proposes a green approach to the neural architecture search process that minimizes its environmental impact. The traditional approach of neural architecture search involves sweeping the entire space of possible architectures, which is computationally expensive and time-consuming. Recently, to address this issue, performance predictors have been proposed to estimate the performance of different architectures, thereby reducing the search space and speeding up the exploration process. The proposed approach aims to develop a performance predictor by training only a small percentage of the possible hyperparameter configurations. The suggested predictor can be queried to find the best configurations without training them on the dataset. Hyperspectral remote sensing images (HSIs) have both spectral and spatial characteristics. The adept exploitation of these attributes is central to enhancing the classification accuracy of HSIs. In order to effectively utilize spatial and spectral features to classify HSIs, this paper proposes a method for the spatial feature extraction of HSIs based on a mutually guided image filter (muGIF) and combined with the band-distance-grouped principal component. Firstly, aiming at the problem that previously guided image filtering cannot effectively deal with the inconsistent information structure between the guided and target information, a method for extracting spatial features using muGIF is proposed. Then, aiming at the problem of the information loss caused by a single principal component as a guided image in the traditional GIF-based spatial–spectral classification, a spatial feature-extraction framework based on the band-distance-grouped principal component is proposed. The method groups the bands according to the band distance and extracts the principal components of each set of band subsets as the guide map of the current band subset to filter the HSIs. A deep convolutional neural network model and a generative adversarial network model for the filtered HSIs are constructed and then trained using samples for HSIs' spatial–spectral classification. Experiments show that compared with the traditional methods and several popular spatial–spectral HSI classification methods based on a filter, the proposed methods based on muGIF can effectively extract the spatial–spectral features and improve the classification accuracy of HSIs. Deep learning, which is a dominating technique in artificial intelligence, has completely changed image understanding over the past decade. As a consequence, the sea ice extraction (SIE) problem has reached a new era. We present a comprehensive review of four important aspects of SIE, including algorithms, datasets, applications and future trends. Our review focuses on research published from 2016 to the present, with a specific focus on deep-learning-based approaches in the last five years. We divided all related algorithms into three categories, including the conventional image classification approach, the machine learning-based approach and deep-learning-based methods. We reviewed the accessible ice datasets including SAR-based datasets, the optical-based datasets and others. The applications are presented in four aspects including climate research, navigation, geographic information systems (GIS) production and others. Leveraging multi-view remote sensing images in scene classification tasks significantly enhances the precision of such classifications. This approach, however, poses challenges due to the simultaneous use of multi-view images, which often leads to a misalignment between the visual content and semantic labels, thus complicating the classification process. In addition, as the number of image viewpoints increases, the quality problem for remote sensing images further limits the effectiveness of multi-view image classification. Traditional scene classification methods predominantly employ SoftMax deep learning techniques, which lack the capability to assess the quality of remote sensing images or to provide explicit explanations for the network's predictive outcomes. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel end-to-end multi-view decision fusion network specifically designed for remote sensing scene classification. The network integrates information from multi-view remote sensing images under the guidance of image credibility and uncertainty, and when the multi-view image fusion process encounters conflicts, it greatly alleviates the conflicts and provides more reasonable and credible predictions for the multi-view scene classification results. Initially, multi-scale features are extracted from the multi-view images using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Following this, an asymptotic adaptive feature fusion module (AAFFM) is constructed to gradually integrate these multi-scale features. An adaptive spatial fusion method is then applied to assign different spatial weights to the multi-scale feature maps, thereby significantly enhancing the model's feature discrimination capability. Finally, an evidence decision fusion module (EDFM), utilizing evidence theory and the Dirichlet distribution, is developed. This module quantitatively assesses the uncertainty in the multi-perspective image classification process. Through the fusing of multi-perspective remote sensing image information in this module, a rational explanation for the prediction results is provided. The efficacy of the proposed method was validated through experiments conducted on the AiRound and CV-BrCT datasets. The results show that our method not only improves single-view scene classification results but also advances multi-view remote sensing scene classification results by accurately characterizing the scene and mitigating the conflicting nature of the fusion process. Amongst the other benefits conferred by the shift from traditional to digital pathology is the potential to use machine learning for diagnosis, prognosis, and personalization. A major challenge in the realization of this potential emerges from the extremely large size of digitized images, which are often in excess of 100,000 × 100,000 pixels. In this paper, we tackle this challenge head-on by diverging from the existing approaches in the literature—which rely on the splitting of the original images into small patches—and introducing magnifying networks (MagNets). By using an attention mechanism, MagNets identify the regions of the gigapixel image that benefit from an analysis on a finer scale. This process is repeated, resulting in an attention-driven coarse-to-fine analysis of only a small portion of the information contained in the original whole-slide images. Importantly, this is achieved using minimal ground truth annotation, namely, using only global, slide-level labels. The results from our tests on the publicly available Camelyon16 and Camelyon17 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of MagNets—as well as the proposed optimization framework—in the task of whole-slide image classification. Waterfowl populations monitoring is essential for wetland conservation. Lately, deep learning techniques have shown promising advancements in detecting waterfowl in aerial images. In this paper, we present performance evaluation of several popular supervised and semi-supervised deep learning models for waterfowl detection in aerial images using four new image datasets containing 197,642 annotations. The best-performing model, Faster R-CNN, achieved 95.38% accuracy in terms of mAP. Semi-supervised learning models outperformed supervised models when the same amount of labeled data was used for training. Additionally, we present performance evaluation of several deep learning models on waterfowl classifications on aerial images using a new real-bird classification dataset consisting of 6,986 examples and a new decoy classification dataset consisting of about 10,000 examples per category of 20 categories. In the domain of AI-driven healthcare, deep learning models have markedly advanced pneumonia diagnosis through X-ray image analysis, thus indicating a significant stride in the efficacy of medical decision systems. This paper presents a novel approach utilizing a deep convolutional neural network that effectively amalgamates the strengths of EfficientNetB0 and DenseNet121, and it is enhanced by a suite of attention mechanisms for refined pneumonia image classification. Leveraging pre-trained models, our network employs multi-head, self-attention modules for meticulous feature extraction from X-ray images. The model's integration and processing efficiency are further augmented by a channel-attention-based feature fusion strategy, one that is complemented by a residual block and an attention-augmented feature enhancement and dynamic pooling strategy. Our used dataset, which comprises a comprehensive collection of chest X-ray images, represents both healthy individuals and those affected by pneumonia, and it serves as the foundation for this research. This study delves deep into the algorithms, architectural details, and operational intricacies of the proposed model. The empirical outcomes of our model are noteworthy, with an exceptional performance marked by an accuracy of 95.19%, a precision of 98.38%, a recall of 93.84%, an F1 score of 96.06%, a specificity of 97.43%, and an AUC of 0.9564 on the test dataset. To develop socially assistive robots for monitoring older adults at home, a sensor is required to identify residents and capture activities within the room without violating privacy. We focused on 2D Light Detection and Ranging (2D-LIDAR) capable of robustly measuring human contours in a room. While horizontal 2D contour data can provide human location, identifying humans and activities from these contours is challenging. To address this issue, we developed novel methods using deep learning techniques. This paper proposes methods for person identification and activity estimation in a room using contour point clouds captured by a single 2D-LIDAR at hip height. In this approach, human contours were extracted from 2D-LIDAR data using density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise. Subsequently, the person and activity within a 10-s interval were estimated employing deep learning techniques. Two deep learning models, namely Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and image classification (VGG16), were compared. In the experiment, a total of 120 min of walking data and 100 min of additional activities (door opening, sitting, and standing) were collected from four participants. The LSTM-based and VGG16-based methods achieved accuracies of 65.3% and 89.7%, respectively, for person identification among the four individuals. Furthermore, these methods demonstrated accuracies of 94.2% and 97.9%, respectively, for the estimation of the four activities. Despite the 2D-LIDAR point clouds at hip height containing small features related to gait, the results indicate that the VGG16-based method has the capability to identify individuals and accurately estimate their activities. Simple Summary: Blurry scenarios often affect the clarity of fish images, posing significant challenges to deep learning models in terms of the accurate recognition of fish species. A method based on deep learning with a diffusion model and an attention mechanism, DiffusionFR, is proposed herein to improve the accuracy of fish species recognition in blurry scenarios caused by light reflections and water ripple noise. Using a self-constructed dataset, BlurryFish, extensive experiments were conducted and the results showed that the proposed two-stage diffusion network model can restore the clarity of blurry fish images to some extent and the proposed learnable attention module is effective in improving the accuracy of fish species recognition. Blurry scenarios, such as light reflections and water ripples, often affect the clarity and signal-to-noise ratio of fish images, posing significant challenges for traditional deep learning models in accurately recognizing fish species. Firstly, deep learning models rely on a large amount of labeled data. However, it is often difficult to label data in blurry scenarios. Secondly, existing deep learning models need to be more effective for the processing of bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate images, which is an essential reason for their low recognition rate. A method based on the diffusion model and attention mechanism for fish image recognition in blurry scenarios, DiffusionFR, is proposed to solve these problems and improve the performance of species recognition of fish images in blurry scenarios. This paper presents the selection and application of this correcting technique. In the method, DiffusionFR, a two-stage diffusion network model, TSD, is designed to deblur bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate fish scene pictures to restore clarity, and a learnable attention module, LAM, is intended to improve the accuracy of fish recognition. In addition, a new dataset of fish images in blurry scenarios, BlurryFish, was constructed and used to validate the effectiveness of DiffusionFR, combining bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate images from the publicly available dataset Fish4Knowledge. The experimental results demonstrate that DiffusionFR achieves outstanding performance on various datasets. On the original dataset, DiffusionFR achieved the highest training accuracy of 97.55%, as well as a Top-1 accuracy test score of 92.02% and a Top-5 accuracy test score of 95.17%. Furthermore, on nine datasets with light reflection noise, the mean values of training accuracy reached a peak at 96.50%, while the mean values of the Top-1 accuracy test and Top-5 accuracy test were at their highest at 90.96% and 94.12%, respectively. Similarly, on three datasets with water ripple noise, the mean values of training accuracy reached a peak at 95.00%, while the mean values of the Top-1 accuracy test and Top-5 accuracy test were at their highest at 89.54% and 92.73%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the method showcases superior accuracy and enhanced robustness in handling original datasets and datasets with light reflection and water ripple noise. Several deep learning and transformer models have been recommended in previous research to deal with the classification of hyperspectral images (HSIs). Among them, one of the most innovative is the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT), which applies a distance-independent approach to capture the global dependency among all pixels in a selected region. However, this model does not consider the local spatial-spectral and spectral sequential relations. In this paper, a dual-dimensional (i.e., spatial and spectral) BERT (the so-called D2BERT) is proposed, which improves the existing BERT model by capturing more global and local dependencies between sequential spectral bands regardless of distance. In the proposed model, two BERT branches work in parallel to investigate relations among pixels and spectral bands, respectively. In addition, the layer intermediate information is used for supervision during the training phase to enhance the performance. We used two widely employed datasets for our experimental analysis. The proposed D2BERT shows superior classification accuracy and computational efficiency with respect to some state-of-the-art neural networks and the previously developed BERT model for this task. Over the past few decades, researchers have shown sustained and robust investment in exploring methods for hyperspectral image classification (HSIC). The utilization of hyperspectral imagery (HSI) for crop classification in agricultural areas has been widely demonstrated for its feasibility, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, numerous coexisting issues in agricultural scenarios, such as limited annotated samples, uneven distribution of crops, and mixed cropping, could not be explored insightfully in the mainstream datasets. The limitations within these impractical datasets have severely restricted the widespread application of HSIC methods in agricultural scenarios. A benchmark dataset named Heilongjiang (HLJ) for HSIC is introduced in this paper, which is designed for large-scale crop classification. For practical applications, the HLJ dataset covers a wide range of genuine agricultural regions in Heilongjiang Province; it provides rich spectral diversity enriched through two images from diverse time periods and vast geographical areas with intercropped multiple crops. Simultaneously, considering the urgent demand of deep learning models, the two images in the HLJ dataset have 319,685 and 318,942 annotated samples, along with 151 and 149 spectral bands, respectively. To validate the suitability of the HLJ dataset as a baseline dataset for HSIC, we employed eight classical classification models in fundamental experiments on the HLJ dataset. Most of the methods achieved an overall accuracy of more than 80% with 10% of the labeled samples used for training. Furthermore, the advantages of the HLJ dataset and the impact of real-world factors on experimental results are comprehensively elucidated. The classification of certain agricultural species poses a formidable challenge due to their inherent resemblance and the absence of dependable visual discriminators. The accurate identification of these plants holds substantial importance in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and herbal medicine, where the optimization of essential compound yields and product quality is paramount. In response to this challenge, we have devised an automated classification system based on deep learning principles, designed to achieve precision and efficiency in species classification. Our approach leverages a diverse dataset encompassing various cultivars and employs the Parallel Artificial Multiple Intelligence System–Ensemble Deep Learning model (P-AMIS-E). This model integrates ensemble image segmentation techniques, including U-Net and Mask-R-CNN, alongside image augmentation and convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures such as SqueezeNet, ShuffleNetv2 1.0x, MobileNetV3, and InceptionV1. The culmination of these elements results in the P-AMIS-E model, enhanced by an Artificial Multiple Intelligence System (AMIS) for decision fusion, ultimately achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 98.41%. This accuracy notably surpasses the performance of existing methods, such as ResNet-101 and Xception, which attain 93.74% accuracy on the testing dataset. Moreover, when applied to an unseen dataset, the P-AMIS-E model demonstrates a substantial advantage, yielding accuracy rates ranging from 4.45% to 31.16% higher than those of the compared methods. It is worth highlighting that our heterogeneous ensemble approach consistently outperforms both single large models and homogeneous ensemble methods, achieving an average improvement of 13.45%. This paper provides a case study focused on the Centella Asiatica Urban (CAU) cultivar to exemplify the practical application of our approach. By integrating image segmentation, augmentation, and decision fusion, we have significantly enhanced accuracy and efficiency. Ultra-wide-field fundus imaging (UFI) provides comprehensive visualization of crucial eye components, including the optic disk, fovea, and macula. This in-depth view facilitates doctors in accurately diagnosing diseases and recommending suitable treatments. This study investigated the application of various deep learning models for detecting eye diseases using UFI. We developed an automated system that processes and enhances a dataset of 4697 images. Our approach involves brightness and contrast enhancement, followed by applying feature extraction, data augmentation and image classification, integrated with convolutional neural networks. These networks utilize layer-wise feature extraction and transfer learning from pre-trained models to accurately represent and analyze medical images. Among the five evaluated models, including ResNet152, Vision Transformer, InceptionResNetV2, RegNet and ConVNext, ResNet152 is the most effective, achieving a testing area under the curve (AUC) score of 96.47% (with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 0.931–0.974). Additionally, the paper presents visualizations of the model's predictions, including confidence scores and heatmaps that highlight the model's focal points—particularly where lesions due to damage are evident.
