Overwintering insects are facing energetic challenges because of food shortage, low temperature, and desiccation stress. Paper wasps of the genus Polistes overwinter as mated adults (gynes) in hibernacula protecting them from predation, snow, and rain but barely from low environmental temperature. In different climates, they face differing overwintering temperature regimes, and therefore they may differ in their energy use. We investigated how much of energy resources built up until autumn is used during diapause dormancy in natural hibernacula by measuring lipid, glycogen, and free carbohydrate content in autumn and early spring in Polistes dominula from temperate European (Austrian) and warm Mediterranean (Italian) climate and Polistes gallicus from Mediterranean climate. Winter energy consumption amounted to ~ 339 and ~ 310 J per wasp in the Austrian and Italian Polistes dominula populations. The smaller Italian Polistes gallicus consumed ~ 247 J. This amounts to 2.62, 2.35, and 1.79 J per day. Of this, the energy demand was mainly fuelled by lipids (84%, 93%, and 90%, respectively), but glycogen stores contributed also considerably (16%, 6%, and 9%). Free carbohydrates decreased only by 0.7%, 1%, and 0.8%. While fat stores seem still sufficient in spring, the wasps depleted most of their carbohydrates. The energy reserves of 396, 400, and 147 J per wasp remaining in spring in the three populations seem sufficient to fuel rest or simple brood care activities for a whole summer but restrict foraging flights to a few hours (~ 3.5–6 h). This paper investigates the connection between climate change and energy security in Europe and provides empirical evidence that these issues are the two faces of the same coin. Using a panel of 39 European countries during the period 1980–2020, the empirical analysis presented in this paper indicates that increasing the share of nuclear, renewables, and other nonhydrocarbon energy and improving energy efficiency could lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and improve energy security throughout Europe. Accordingly, policies and reforms aimed at shifting away from hydrocarbons and increasing energy efficiency in distribution and consumption are key to mitigating climate change, reducing energy dependence, and minimizing exposure to energy price volatility. In this paper, the effects of different designs of pressure vessels on hydrodynamic parameters and the performance of seawater RO systems are investigated using computer simulations. Simulation results showed that designs using pressure vessels with four membranes in two-pass RO systems have a lower energy consumption, 5.29 and 0.33 kWh/m3 for the first and second passes, respectively, than those with two or three membranes. Also, designs No. 4 and No. 10 were the most efficient, 41 and 56% for the first and second passes, respectively, compared to other ones. The first and second passes required a lower permeate and feed pressure when using designs No. 3, No. 6, No. 9, and No. 12 where pressure vessels with two membranes were used. In addition, hybrid designs of two-pass RO systems were found to have the best efficiency and the lowest energy consumption among various other designs. Findings showed that in two-pass RO systems, the first pass consumes more energy than the second pass. Thus, the efficiency of the second pass in all designs of two-pass RO systems is more than the first pass. The software-defined network paradigm, ensembled with a wireless sensor network, has emerged as a promising phenomenon to enable multi-tasking, re-configuration, and scalability. Termed the software-defined wireless sensor network (SDWSN), it divides the network into two planes: data and control. The data plane consists of software-defined sensor nodes (SDSN) that sense monitoring activity and generate data. On the other hand, the control plane has controller/control Nodes (CN) which collect data from SDSN, perform data aggregation, and then transmit toward the sink node. These CNs consume more amount of energy as compared to SDSNs as they perform multiple tasks. Following this scenario, this paper proposes an energy-efficient multi-objective optimization approach to solve the CNs placement problem through a meta-heuristic algorithm by considering the nodes' location, energy, and load distribution. This paper presents a particle swarm optimization-based controller placement and re-placement (PSO-CPR) algorithm for SDWSN. The PSO-CPR elects SDSNs to become CN based on their distance, residual energy, and capacity in the network. Moreover, the placement of a CN rotates within the cluster to avoid its failure and balance energy consumption. The simulation results show improved CN placement with respect to the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of average delay by 23.5–37.4%, energy consumption by 18.6–32.6%, and probabilistic load distribution by 17.7–54.1%. Moreover, the comparative study also indicates that PSO-CPR achieve promising result by reducing packet loss by 14.4–27.5% and network re-clustering period by 32.3–68.3% and enhance the network lifetime by 22.6–42.5%. 3D integration is one of the scalable multiprocessor design solutions. The main challenge in 3D design is temperature traps, especially in the upper layers and hot spots. The current studies present solutions for solving temperature and hotspot problems in topology, routing, and mapping levels. Accordingly, the characteristics of temperature-aware core mapping are beneficial for dealing with the challenges of 3D chips. In this paper, the core temperature is modeled based on processing, communication power, neighbor node temperature, distance from the heat sink, and hotspot node. To find the optimal solution, this paper proposes thermal-aware application mapping techniques using genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic to minimize peak temperatures in 3D network-on-chip (NoC) architectures. Fitness functions include the above parameters with the same weight (GSM) and the fitness function with fuzzy logic by considering the effect of distance from heat sink (GFM1) and heat sink distance and the number of neighbor's core (GFM2). Specifically, the fuzzy logic-based GFM1 algorithm demonstrates superior performance over the genetic algorithm-driven GSM approach in reducing power consumption and energy costs associated with inter-core communication traffic. Across the different traffic patterns tested, GFM1 consistently achieves lower energy expenditure, with reductions upward of 50% compared to GSM. This underlines the strengths of the fuzzy technique in enabling thermal-aware mapping to minimize chip temperatures in the presence of intensive workloads and communication. Research on resource management focuses on optimizing system performance and energy efficiency by distributing shared resources like processor cores, caches, and main memory among competing applications. This research spans a wide range of applications, including those from high-performance computing, machine learning, and mobile computing. Existing research frameworks often simplify research by concentrating on specific characteristics, such as the architecture of the computing nodes, resource monitoring, and representative workloads. For instance, this is typically the case with cloud systems, which introduce additional complexity regarding hardware and software requirements. To avoid this complexity during research, experimental frameworks are being developed. Nevertheless, proposed frameworks often fail regarding the types of nodes included, virtualization support, and management of critical shared resources. This paper presents Stratus, an experimental framework that overcomes these limitations. Stratus includes different types of nodes, a comprehensive virtualization stack, and the ability to partition the major shared resources of the system. Even though Stratus was originally conceived to perform cloud research, its modular design allows Stratus to be extended, broadening its research use on different computing domains and platforms, matching the complexity of modern cloud environments, as shown in the case studies presented in this paper. Mobile object detection and tracking is an important application of wireless sensor network. However, longevity of such application is a challenge as sensor nodes in wireless sensor network operates on battery power. Therefore, there is the requirement for increasing the lifetime of this application by optimal usage of energy while tracking. Of course, while optimizing the energy usage, tracking accuracy should not be compromised. A number of research works are carried out in the past to enhance the wireless sensor network lifetime but no work resolved the problem completely. This paper studies the issue of data routing to sink in energy constrained wireless sensor network based application where tracking information collected from different sensor nodes are processed to determine the object's presence in the monitoring area. This paper proposes an energy efficient hybrid artificial bee colony-modified Dijkstra (HABC-MD) algorithm for cluster based network for optimum usage of energy during routing of packet. The objective of this algorithm is to save the energy of the network by optimizing the number of node-to-node transmission while tracking. It uses metaheuristic approach based artificial bee colony algorithm for selection of cluster head in each round and heuristic approach-based Dijkstra algorithm for selection of optimum route between source node and sink for packet transmission. Modified Dijkstra algorithm considers both distance between source and destination and energy of the source node for determination of optimum route to sink. In recent years, with the continuous derivative of the Internet of Things (IoT) business, the use of various types of information sensing equipment needs to continue to increase. However, power supply conditions are getting tougher. On the other hand, as the function of the devices itself increases, the power consumption also increases, and the lack of energy demand is more obvious. To solve these problems, a dual-frequency RF energy harvesting system is designed in this paper. First of all, in order to expand the effective receiving range of RF energy, this paper designed a 920 MHz hexagonal windmill circular-polarized antenna, and added an energy receiving circuit in the 2.45 GHz band on this basis, which fully alleviated the problem of insufficient energy collection for small devices in the Internet of Things while ensuring a small volume wavelength ratio. In addition, in order to improve the energy conversion efficiency, this paper also designed a dual-frequency rectifier circuit based on conjugate separation matching, using the harmonic signal of 920 MHz signal to broaden the bandwidth of 2.45 GHz. The experimental results show that the peak conversion rates of 920 MHz and 2.45 GHz channels are 72.8%@0dBm and 38.7%@-2dBm, respectively. Overall testing in a Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) room with a commercial Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader. The experimental results show that the system can steadily output 3.29 V–3.3 V voltage within 6 m charging distance, which is 20% higher than the output voltage of the single-channel receiving system, and the receiving angle is 36.84% larger. Effective forecasting of energy consumption structure is vital for China to reach its "dual carbon" objective. However, little attention has been paid to existing studies on the holistic nature and internal properties of energy consumption structure. Therefore, this paper incorporates the theory of compositional data into the study of energy consumption structure, which not only takes into account the specificity of the internal features of the structure, but also digs deeper into the relative information. Meanwhile, based on the minimization theory of squares of the Aitchison distance in the compositional data, a combined model based on the three single models, namely the metabolism grey model (MGM), back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model, and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, is structured in this paper. The forecast results of the energy consumption structure in 2023–2040 indicate that the future energy consumption structure of China will evolve towards a more diversified pattern, but the proportion of natural gas and non-fossil energy has yet to meet the policy goals set by the government. This paper not only suggests that compositional data from joint prediction models have a high applicability value in the energy sector, but also has some theoretical significance for adapting and improving the energy consumption structure in China. Emulsion polymerization is an effective means of synthesizing high-molecular-weight polymers in order to reduce the consumption of fossil energy. This paper adopts isoamyl octanoate to replace white oil as the continuous phase of emulsion polymerization to synthesize the high molecular weight polyacrylamide emulsion RSE. S-80 and T-80 were chosen as the emulsifiers, and the test results showed that the HLB value is 5.72 when S-80/T-80 is 6.5. When S-80/T-80 is 6.5, the HLB value is 5.72. Water and isoamyl octanoate can produce ultra-low interfacial tension and stable arrangement in the interfacial membrane to form a stable emulsion, and the particle size is uniformly distributed in a normal manner. The test of the exothermic process of polymerization shows that the emulsion can be stabilized into nuclei, and polyacrylamide polymers with a molar mass of more than 18 million are obtained. The microstructure test observes that RSE molecules are in an aggregated state in the aqueous solution. A three-dimensional spatial network structure is formed, and the polymerization can be stabilized in a three-dimensional network structure after 120 °C, 170 s−1 shear, which still has good stability. After the variable shear performance test proved that the aqueous solution of RSE belongs to the typical non-Newtonian fluids, to shock test the viscoelasticity of different concentrations of RSE polymer, G′ > G″, the RSE solution to elasticity is dominant. In this paper, the capacity to form stable emulsions of isoamyl octanoate in the emulsion polymerization process is investigated to provide a basis for seeking the selection of a continuous phase with little environmental pollution and high functionality. Scheduling tasks in the cloud system is the main issue that needs to be addressed in order to improve customer satisfaction and system performance. This paper proposes DCOHHOTS, a novel multi-objective task scheduling algorithm based on a modified Harris hawks optimizer. In overall, this paper has two main stages. As the first step, DCOHHO is introduced as a new version of Harris Hawks Optimizer. Using the Differential Evolution algorithm, an optimal configuration is selected from the chaotic map, the opposition-based learning, and the ratio of the population. In order to improve the performance of the Harris Hawks Optimizer, this optimal configuration is applied to initialize the hawk's position. In the second stage, DCOHHOTS, a DCOHHO-based Task Scheduling algorithm, is proposed. Multi-objective behavior in the proposed task scheduling algorithm optimizes resource utilization to decrease the makespan, energy consumption, and execution cost. Moreover, prioritizing tasks before submitting them to the scheduler is done using the hierarchical process in the DCOHHOTS algorithm. For the purpose of investigating the performance of the proposed DCOHHO algorithm, a number of experiments are conducted using 20 standard functions and twelve algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the DCOHHO algorithm is superior at determining the optimal test function solutions. Additionally, makespan, execution cost, resource utilization, and energy efficiency of DCOHHOTS task scheduling algorithms are analyzed. Compared to existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm saves up to 16% energy in heavy loads. Additionally, resource utilization has increased by 17%. The objective of this paper is to investigate the nonlinear relationship between ICT and CO2 emissions by controlling for economic growth, foreign direct investment, energy consumption, and trade openness. Using data from 16 Middle East and North African (MENA) countries over the period 1990–2019, we apply the Panel Smooth Transition Regression (PSTR) model, as introduced by (González A, Teräsvirta T, vanDijk D (2005) Panel smooth transition regression models. SEE/EFI Working Paper Series in Economics and Finance, No. 604), to study the potential regime-switching behavior of the relationship between the variables. The results reveal the existence of a strong regime-switching effect between ICT and CO2 emissions. It was found that after reaching a certain threshold, ICT use and penetration starts to significantly mitigate environmental degradation. Our results show that high levels of ICT not only improve environmental quality but can also be part of the solution to combat the environmental challenges that the MENA region has faced over the past decades. In addition, to account for the potential endogeneity bias, we also develop and estimate a PSTR model with instrumental variables (IV-PSTR) using the approach of (Fouquau et al., Econ Model 25:284–299, 2008). This paper presents the control strategies and performance analysis of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) for grid-connected wind energy conversion system (WECS). The wind power produces environmentally sustainable electricity and helps to meet national energy demand as the amounts of non-renewable resources are declining. The development of the WECS can be seen with development in power electronics technology. Currently, two types of major generator used in WECS these are DFIG and the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Both variable oprational speed are used in wind turbine. Because its high performance, reliability, controllability and high-power and voltage capabilities, multilevel converters have become a popular option for multi-MW WECSs. This paper focuses on the application of back-to-back modular multilevel converters in a DFIG and PMSG-based WECS. A comparative performance analysis of the two systems based on power quality, active, reactive power, and modular multilevel converter dynamics is presented. In the stochastic and dynamic edge-cloud collaborative environment, the computing resources of the host are limited, and the resource requirements of computing tasks are random and changeable. Therefore, how to efficiently schedule dynamic tasks and improve system performance becomes challenging. The scheduling algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning optimizes the delay and energy consumption of the system by dynamically interacting with the environment, which can solve the problem of dynamic and changeable environment to a certain extent, but there are still problems such as poor model adaptability, low training efficiency, and unbalanced system load. In this paper, aiming at optimizing the average response time of task scheduling and the average energy consumption of the system, a multi-objective task scheduling model is designed, and a task scheduling policy optimization algorithm based on improved asynchronous advantage actor-critic (A3C) is proposed. The residual convolutional neural network (RCNN) improves the network structure of A3C, using asynchronous multi-threaded training methods to interact with the edge-cloud collaborative environment and capturing the random dynamic characteristics of resources required for computing tasks and heterogeneous edge-cloud hosts resource change characteristics to better adapt to random dynamic environments, and it can quickly updating network parameters, improving training speed, and make full use of host resources to solve system load imbalance problems. Simulation results show that the scheduling algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively reduce task response time and system energy consumption in an edge-cloud collaborative environment. Internet of things establishes communication among heterogeneous devices. IoT network is low power and lossy network known as LLN. The components in LLN use low power for its operations. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has defined routing protocol for standardized LLN, i.e., routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL). One of the major challenges in RPL is efficient conservation of node energy to improve the life of the LLN network. In the RPL network, most of the energy is consumed while regulating and controlling the packets rather than transmission. The algorithm used for regulating and controlling packet in RPL is called trickle timer algorithm. Hence to improve the lifetime of network it is essential to modify the existing trickle timer algorithm. In this paper, we have proposed a new algorithm called EE-trickle. The performance of EE-trickle is compared with existing trickle using the simulator Cooja and using open test bed of future Internet of things lab. From the experiments, it is identified that EE-trickle provides better PDR along with less energy consumption than the existing trickle. This paper presents a three-port isolated hybrid converter (3PIHC) with extended phase-shift modulation (EPM) to reduce voltage and current stress in the converter for DC microgrid applications. A high-frequency transformer with three independent windings is employed for isolating three ports in the converter. A wide variation in voltage transformation ratio is one of the main concern in DC microgrid, which need to be addressed for effective power conversion and utilization of the energy generation systems. Traditional phase-shift modulation (TPM) in 3PIHC leads to high conduction and core losses in the converter under wide variation in voltage transformation ratio. This paper proposes an extended phase-shift modulation in 3PIHC for different sequence of voltage transformation ratios between port 1 and port 2 (m 12) and between port 1 and port 3 (m 13) , which is a cost-effective solution for reducing losses in the converter. The peak current at all ports and power equations in 3PIHC are deduced, and the computational method for obtaining the phase-shift values with minimum current stress is explained in detail. A comparative evaluation study proves that the proposed three-port converter with EPM outperforms to TPM in the aspects like low current stress, reduced semiconductor switching losses and transformer losses for wide variation in voltage transformation ratios. A wireless body area network (WBAN) is a type of wireless sensor network that plays a crucial role in monitoring patient healthcare. In this network, sensor nodes are typically placed inside or outside the patient's body. These nodes are capable of transmitting data to the sink node when any functional changes in the patient are detected. The routing and energy efficiency of the network nodes are challenging tasks in WBAN, as each sensor node operates on a battery. Therefore, in multi-hop routing designing a robust routing protocol has a significant impact on reducing energy consumption during the selection of the next hop. In this paper, a simple novel routing protocol named simple energy-aware and reliable (SEAR) routing protocol is proposed to transmit reliable data packets in a WBAN. The proposed routing scheme considers the remaining energy of sensor nodes, priority data, and hop count to the sink node as significant metrics for dynamically selecting the best forwarder node. Furthermore, the proposed protocol utilizes the route reliability factor (RRF) to select the optimal route among all possible routes between the source sensor node and the sink node. RRF selects the route with the maximum route residual energy and minimum hop count. As a result, SEAR has the ability to provide effective single-hop and multi-hop routing data transmission to improve the reliability of data transmission, decrease the energy consumption of the sensor nodes, and prolong the lifetime of the network. The simulation results show that the performance of the SEAR routing protocol outperforms the existing routing protocols for the metrics: packet loss ratio, throughput, end-to-end delay, normalized routing load, energy consumption, and network lifetime. The results indicate that the proposed protocol improves total energy consumption by 18.76% and 10.89% when compared to EERR-RLFL and AMCRP respectively. Meanwhile, SEAR reduces the average end-to-end delay by 17% and 9%, packet loss ratio by 29.48% and 17.69%, and normalized routing load by 31.17% and 20.91%. Additionally, SEAR achieves up to 16% and 9.71% higher throughput compared to EERR-RLFL and AMCRP routing protocols respectively. With the growth of the cloud computing market, the number and scale of cloud data centers are expanding rapidly. While cloud data centers provide a large amount of computing power, generating tremendous energy consumption has become a fundamental issue in the financial and environmental fields. Improving quality of service and reducing energy costs are fundamental challenges for next-generation cloud data centers. Task scheduling in cloud data centers grows increasingly complex due to the heterogeneity of computing resources, intricate dependencies of jobs and rising expenses resulting from high energy consumption. Efficiently utilizing computing resources is crucial, so it is necessary to develop optimal strategies for job scheduling. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based task scheduler (E2DSched) for online scheduling of randomly arriving directed acyclic graph jobs in cloud data centers. E2DSched divides the scheduling process into three layers: task selection layer, server selection layer and frequency control layer. It achieves joint optimization of energy consumption and quality of service through three-layer cooperation. In the era of heterogeneous computing, a new paradigm called accelerator level parallelism (ALP) has emerged. In ALP, accelerators are used concurrently to provide unprecedented levels of performance and energy efficiency. To reach that there are many problems to be solved, one of the most challenging being co-execution. In this paper, we present a new scheduling framework called POAS, a general method for providing co-execution to applications. Our proposal consists of four steps: predict, optimize, adapt and schedule. With POAS, an unseen application can be executed concurrently in ALP with little effort. We evaluate POAS on a heterogeneous environment consisting of CPUs, GPUs (CUDA cores), and XPUs (Tensor cores) on two different fields, namely linear algebra (matrix multiplication benchmark) and deep learning (convolution benchmark). Our experiments prove that POAS provides excellent performance and completes the tasks within a time very close to the optimal time for the hardware and applications used, with a negligible execution time overhead. Moreover, the POAS predictor performed exceptionally well, achieving very low RMSE values for both use cases. This paper presents a new integrated model for the multi-skilled project scheduling and multi-project scheduling problems, where the activities are technically linked through the generalized precedence relations (GPR). The proposed model is energy-efficient since the concerns regarding the energy consumptions of projects have been embraced as well. Reviewing the pertinent literature has revealed that the energy-efficient formulations for the multi-skill and multi-project scheduling problems with the GPR connections are very rare. For this formulation, two minimization objectives have been defined: (1) the overall duration to finish all projects and (2) the total energy consumption of all projects. This research offers a new version of the multi-objective vibration damping optimization (MOVDO) method to solve the proposed model. For the MOVDO, a new crossover-like operator has been designed that generates offspring solutions through the swapping procedure. Furthermore, a new population-updating strategy inspired by the Toom's rule cellular automaton has been devised for the MOVDO. In this strategy, each solution of the population can be replaced with its neighbor solutions based on the dominance criterion and the rules of the Toom's cellular automaton. Three other solution methodologies have been hired to solve the model in order to have a fair judgment on the efficacy of the MOVDO. The comparisons between the MOVDO and other optimizers have been conducted based on five performance assessment metrics. This paper presents an innovative control scheme designed to significantly enhance the power factor of AC/DC boost rectifiers by integrating an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) with predictive current control. The innovative control strategy addresses key challenges in power quality and energy efficiency, demonstrating exceptional performance under diverse operating conditions. Through rigorous simulation, the proposed system achieves precise input current shaping, resulting in a remarkably low total harmonic distortion (THD) of 3.5%, which is well below the IEEE-519 standard threshold of 5%. Cloud data centers face various challenges, such as high energy consumption, environmental impact, and quality of service (QoS) requirements. Dynamic virtual machine (VM) consolidation is an effective approach to address these challenges, but it is a complex optimization problem that involves trade-offs between energy efficiency and QoS satisfaction. Moreover, the workload patterns in cloud data centers are often non-stationary and unpredictable, which makes it difficult to model them. In this paper, we propose a new method for dynamic VM consolidation that optimizes both energy efficiency and QoS objectives. Our approach is based on Markov chains and the artificial feeding birds (AFB) algorithm. Markov chains are used to model the resource utilization of each individual VM and PM based on the changes that happen in workload data. AFB algorithm is a metaheuristic optimization technique that mimics the behavior of birds in nature. We modify the AFB algorithm to suit the characteristics of the VM placement problem and to provide QoS-aware and energy-efficient solutions. Our approach also employs an online step detection method to capture variations in workload patterns. Furthermore, we introduce a new policy for VM selection from overloaded hosts, which considers the abrupt changes in the utilization processes of the VMs. The proposed algorithms are evaluated extensively using the CloudSim Toolkit with real workload data. The motivation of task scheduling in heterogeneous computing systems is the optimal management of heterogeneous distributed resources as well as the exploitation of system capabilities. Energy consumption is one of the most important issues in dealing with task scheduling in heterogeneous distributed systems. In addition to energy, the task completion time and the task cost have also been added to the concerns of the users. Since the nature of computing systems is heterogeneous and dynamic, task scheduling with traditional methods is inefficient. Meta-heuristic approaches for task scheduling in heterogeneous distributed systems are open problems that have attracted the attention of researchers. So far, many meta-heuristic approaches have addressed the task scheduling problem. However, most of these algorithms are developed for homogeneous systems and optimize only one of the quality-of-service parameters. With this motivation, this paper presents an optimization for energy-aware design of task scheduling in heterogeneous distributed systems using meta-heuristic approaches. We simultaneously consider several parameters such as energy, task completion time and task execution cost for task scheduling. The Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) algorithm is considered for the optimization task due to its adaptability to large search spaces. We combine HHO with a greedy algorithm to avoid local optima and early convergence. The evaluation of the proposed method has been done through numerical simulations. Year after year, there are alarming data concerning the excessive release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, especially CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels. In this context, the development of renewable energy sources has evolved considerably, mainly due to the incentive use of biofuels, such as bioethanol. The second-generation bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomasses has interesting potential to meet this energy demand. The Eucalyptus tree stands as a primary example of cultivated hardwoods, owing to its lignocellulosic structure and the biomass residues generated during its processing, where these attributes make it a significant candidate for the production of fuels. The industrial potential of these materials can be explored in the fractionation of their components to reduce their recalcitrance due to the triad formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, for further processing and obtaining the products of interest. This paper comprehensively gathers the current technological progress employed for processing Eucalyptus wood biomasses for second-generation bioethanol production. Discussion regarding their chemical composition, the main forms of pretreatments that are being applied, and ways to minimize the generation of fermentative inhibitors during these processes is addressed. Finally, recent researches focused on Eucalyptus biomass-based bioethanol production and techno-economic considerations are discussed. The feasibility of the process is closely tied to the comprehensive utilization of products derived from this biomass. The recent global trend toward decarbonization is also occurring in the maritime industry and there is an urgent need to improve the fuel efficiency of ships. Various energy-saving devices (ESDs) are adopted for this purpose. However, because of the difference in the boundary layer thickness between full-scale and model-scale, it is difficult to estimate the actual performance of ESDs in a tank test. As a solution to overcome this difficulty, the Boundary Layer Similarity model (BLS model) is proposed in which only the stern part of the hull is extracted to shorten the model length and to make its boundary layer thickness equivalent to that of a full-scale ship. By using this BLS model, the performance of ESDs on a full-scale can be estimated in a model test. In the present paper, the applicability of the BLS model is investigated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations of performance estimation of an energy-saving fin in different locations for a bulk carrier. It is found that the BLS model is capable of predicting the full-scale performance of the fins by the model-scale simulations. Moreover, the flow fields affected by the fins with the BLS model are similar to those of full-scale. Flood-based communication protocols are attractive due to their easy and fast network startup, resiliency to communication or node loss, and node mobility. Concurrent transmissions are flooding-based protocols that enable low-latency, network-wide communication synchronously. They also provide energy-efficient data dissemination with higher delivery reliability over traditional flooding. This paper proposes the Good Flood Bed (GFB) method to reduce further the energy consumption of networks operating based on concurrent transmission by preventing flood in parts of the network where there is no need for flood data. GFB starts with a distributed leader-election process to choose a root node. Then, the root node builds a spanning tree among nodes. The tree establishes a parent-child relationship and forms a new controlled flood bed. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method by simulation and experimenting on a BLE5 small-scale test bed. In peer-to-peer(P2P) networks, content delivery is very critical, but there are not many relevant research results in content delivery technology. In this paper, in order to simulate content delivery in P2P mode, the number of online players is abstracted into the number of servers that can provide services, the peers write content to buffer is abstracted into the arrival of customers, and the players read content from buffer is abstracted into the service process of the servers. Based on the consideration of the effect of the number of P2P online players on energy consumption, an M/M/c queueing model with random variation in the number of servers is developed, and negative customers and preemptive priority policies are introduced. The matrix–geometric solution method and Gauss-Seidel iterative method are used to derive the performance measures of the system at steady state for two types of contents. And some numerical examples are given using Matlab for analyzing the trend of performance measures in P2P networks with parameters. The benefit function is established to obtain the parameter values that make the social benefit optimal by Nash equilibrium and social optimal strategy, and provide the theoretical basis for the scheduling of P2P peers. Industrial applications and automation controls are closely connected with heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network (WSN); thus, Industrial Internet-of Thing (IIoT) enhances the productivity, scalability, and flexibility of the operations. However, in many cases such as tracking a device or service localization becomes very crucial to state back the operations at times. Existing literature show a various localization solutions, but they face the drawbacks of high energy consumption, and non-coherence in heterogeneity. Besides, in a WSN-based IIoT, non-cooperativeness exists among nodes due to various system and environmental parameters, which make the system resource-exhaustive. In this paper, we introduce a novel localization algorithm that addresses the above-mentioned problems. We call our proposed algorithm RAnge-free Power efficient COoperative Localization (RAPCOL). Specifically, the use of co-operative beacon nodes to broadcast the information to Base Station and low energy consumption highlights the novelty of the work. RAPCOL uses weight metrics for selecting optimal cooperative beacon nodes to prolong the network lifetime. We also introduce an Improvised Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) that credits in the contribution in RAPCOL. We run a overall nine sets of experiments to analyze the localization accuracy, effect of beacon nodes, sensor nodes, network connectivity, and sensing field, error frequency, residual energy, time, and network lifetime. A comparative study with the existing localization models shows that RAPCOL is 30 % better than the existing models in terms of accuracy and resource consumption. We observe stable performance of RAPCOL with a differentiated effect of beacon nodes and sensor nodes. We also observe that our proposed IPSO 20 % better in fast convergence to the optimal solution. Renewable energy sources (RES) are currently being substantially integrated into the power grid because of the recent liberalization of the energy market and associated benefits to both the environment and the economy. A significant amount of renewable energy sources are stochastic and weather dependent, being integrated into the power system that causes a mismatch between the generation of power and the load demand, which creates major issues like variations in frequency and power transmission between the regions. So it is necessary to maintain the frequency and tie-line power variations within a defined range. This is known as automatic generation control (AGC) or load frequency control (LFC). This paper uses brown bear optimization algorithm (BOA) to tune the PID and cascaded PI-PDN controllers for LFC of the renewable integrated two-area power system. The ITAE objective function is utilized to obtain optimal gains of the PID controller. The performance of LFC with BOA-tuned PID controller is compared with other optimization techniques named grey wolf optimization technique (GWO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) on a RES integrated two-area power system under various scenarios. Further, the effectiveness of the BOA is verified by comparing performance of the PID and cascaded PI-PDN controllers. This article proposed the architecture of a stand-alone photovoltaic connected system (SPVS) with energy storage. An SPVS with energy storage requires power management for various operating modes. A coordinate controller is often necessary to manage the change in control architecture depending on the operating mode. This proposed system contains a boost converter (BC) and a bidirectional switched quasi-Z-source DC-DC converter (BSQZSDC). The BC is used for two purposes. The first is extracting the maximum power from the PV. The second is to control the DC link voltage when the SPVS is not in MPPT mode; dual-loop PI controllers are used for this. The BSQZSDC is used for energy management and regulates DC link voltage when SPVS operates in MPPT mode. This paper addresses about the effective control approach that BSQZSDC used, i.e., the double-integral sliding mode control, to regulate the DC link voltage and battery current in various operating modes. The Smart Grid AMI is at the forefront of modernizing energy management for efficient energy distribution and maintaining grid reliability. However, the seamless flow of data within AMI introduces critical security challenges, necessitating innovative approaches to ensure secure data transmission. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) based on Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework for secure data transmission within the Smart Grid AMI. Primarily, we formulate the routing problem as a MOO challenge with four primary objectives namely, energy efficiency, latency minimization, reliability, and security to capture the essence of efficient and secure data transmission. Further, we introduce an RL agent based on the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm for robust policy learning. The RL agent by exploring diverse routing actions and receiving rewards optimizes the routing decisions within the network environment based on the objectives specified in the multi-objective function (MOF). A novel MOF quantifies trade-offs between security and performance metrics, integrating QKD-based security metrics with traditional optimization objectives. This function guides the RL agent in making informed routing decisions. Through extensive simulations using the NS-2 simulator in a realistic Smart Grid AMI environment, the proposed approach obtained energy consumption of 750 J, latency of 55 ms, and security level of 96% and also revealed significant improvements compared to conventional techniques widely employed for secured communication in AMI networks. Overall, the simulation results exhibited that the proposed method showed outstanding performance by achieving energy efficiency of 0.95, latency reduction of 0.92, reliability improvement of 0.94, and security enhancement of 0.96. Understanding nuclear behaviour is fundamental in nuclear physics. This paper introduces a data-driven approach, Continued Fraction Regression (cf-r), to analyze nuclear binding energy (B(A, Z)). Using a tailored loss function and analytic continued fractions, our method accurately approximates stable and experimentally confirmed unstable nuclides. We identify the best model for nuclides with A ≥ 200 , achieving precise predictions with residuals smaller than 0.15 MeV. Our model's extrapolation capabilities are demonstrated as it converges with upper and lower bounds at the nuclear mass limit, reinforcing its accuracy and robustness. The results offer valuable insights into the current limitations of state-of-the-art data-driven approaches in approximating the nuclear binding energy. The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has given rise to applications that demand real-time responses and minimal delay. Fog computing has emerged as a suitable platform for processing IoT applications, extending cloud computing services to the edge of the network. This enables more cost-effective and time-efficient processing at the network's edge. However, determining how to allocate tasks to fog nodes presents a fundamental challenge, involving factors like energy consumption and limited fog server capacity, impacting quality of service parameters such as delay. This paper introduces a mathematical formula for resource allocation to minimize delay and energy consumption while considering quality of service criteria. The subsequent step involves presenting a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) and the gray wolf optimization (GWO), constituting an improved hybrid approach where the GA exhaustively explores the solution space to reduce the risk of converging to a locally optimal point. The combination of these algorithms produces multiple solutions. Despite incurring processing costs and computation delays, the implementation of these algorithms is crucial for enhancing the Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper the photobiomodulation on isolated mitochondria of bovine liver is studied as a thermodynamic process of conversion of energy. This analysis is conducted by considering a particular set-up for the photobiomodulation experiments of interest. It allows, in particular, the computation of the electromagnetic field and the related energetic quantities in the stimulated organelles. The measurements of the excess of biochemical power density produced by the illuminated mitochondria are performed at regular time intervals after the experiments. The calculations and the measurements finally allow us to obtain the first results on the efficiency of the process of conversion of electromagnetic energy into excess of biochemical energy released by the isolated organelles. To ensure the safety of the hogs in large-scale pig farming, the hog transfer truck needs to be cleaned and disinfected at high temperatures. This paper proposes a model of the transfer truck drying room based on spherical air outlets, using RC-4HC temperature and humidity measuring instruments, electronic scale, and other devices to measure the drying process of the transfer trucks at different outdoor ambient temperatures, different deck placement techniques, and different degrees of preheating, and explores the problem of excessive energy consumption in the transfer truck drying room. The outcome demonstrates that the transfer truck drying chamber has the fastest drying time—3137 s. The drying room's energy use is also significantly influenced by the transfer truck leaching effect, deck positioning, which has the second-highest impact, and the outdoor ambient temperature, which has a negligible effect. The fuel consumption of the drying room is decreased by 5.19% and 25.78%, respectively, when the second truck is preheated for 600 s and 1500 s utilizing the leftover heat from the drying of the first truck. The bumper is an automotive part act as a protective shield in the vehicle. It bears and absorbs the load when the vehicle incurs a collision. If the bumper has got more weight it leads to more fuel consumption and decreases the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. This problem can be overcome by reducing the weight of the bumper without compromising its performance. The main objective in bumper design and fabrication is that it should possess less weight and at the same time, it should withstand the higher load during a collision. In this paper, the properties and performance of the developed bumper composite are compared with the existing bumper. The bumper performance is optimized using a finite element analysis with ANSYS R15.0. From the cost analysis, it has been observed that the weight and cost of the Basalt composite bumper is 49% and 56% lesser than the steel bumper. The Impact strength and Factor of Safety values of the Basalt fabric composite bumper is 47.6% and 32.5% higher than the steel bumper. In this paper, undoped BaBi2−x−yNb2ErxYbyO9 (BBN), Er3+ doped BBN, and a series of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped BBN ferroelectric ceramic is synthesized by the solid-state method to study the structural, dielectric, ferroelectric, and energy storage behavior of the prepared ceramic. XRD spectra revealed orthorhombic geometry and Fmmm phase group of each prepared ceramic. SEM micrograph shows dense microstructures similar to square-shaped structures. Two FTIR bands at 619 and 822 cm−1 are observed, displaying the characteristic peaks of the Aurivillius phase. Four Raman bands are detected for undoped BBN, while twelve are visible in Er3+/Yb3+ doped BBN compositions. Further, this work utilizes a comparable method to correlate Nb–O stretching frequencies with their corresponding bond lengths using Herschbach's exponential function. Temperature-dependent dielectric studies show considerable dispersion below and above maximum temperature (Tm), and the dielectric constant (εʹ) decreases with an increase in frequency. The dielectric loss (ɛʺ) curves are quite diffused, and shifts in the maxima with frequency have been observed, thus validating the relaxor behavior of all the prepared BBN compositions. The slimmer PE curves were obtained under moderate electric fields ranging from 75 to 100 kV/cm. The energy storage parameters (W, Wrec, η) are improved with increasing applied electric field. The energy storage efficiency (η) obtained for undoped, Er3+ doped, and Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped BBN ceramics are 78.25%, 83.39%, and 90.87%, respectively. The energy storage parameters revealed good temperature stability from 303 to 415 K, indicating that the synthesized material might aid in developing modern electronic equipment for energy storage applications. This paper proposes a novel free-weighting matrix (FWM) approach for the event-triggered (ET) consensus and formation control of multi-agent systems over a directed graph. A new FWM equality for the consensus error is proposed. This FWM is applied to attain coherent behavior of systems via a fully distributed ET approach. The proposed approach is also extended for ET formation control to attain a specific pattern of agents. Furthermore, an FWM-based consensus controller design with practical ET cooperative control is considered to address consensus and formation control problems by using the in-degree information of a node rather than the algebraic connectivity of a graph or adaptation of parameters. Additionally, the controller gain is formulated using a more general transformation compared to that used in classical approaches. Moreover, the proposed ET scheme for the designed controller is applied on the transmission side to preserve computational resources by eliminating the Zeno behavior. In contrast to the existing methods, the proposed approach (i) provides a fully distributed protocol without using central information of network or adaptive gain; (ii) provides a practical ET mechanism to assure effective bandwidth and fewer energy consumption; and (iii) can be applied to the ET formation problem for mobile agents. Energy prices are booming to high levels with the ongoing global events and massive energy demand post-COVID, triggering panic among-st the general public. In this regard, energy demand management can play an important role here by letting both the entities (utility and customer) take control over the consumption pattern long enough until renewables take over the energy supply from the conventional resources using real-time device scheduling algorithms. To achieve this phenomenon, both participating entities need proper prioritization and their interests to be properly taken care of. In this paper sensitivity analysis of varying priorities to the objectives (customer cost and peak-to-average power ratio) representing both the entities has been carried out. A real-time device scheduling algorithm is implemented to improve the consumption pattern of appliances consisting of multiple objectives. Proper way of normalization is developed to retain the original essence of these objectives. The analysis embeds novel swap operations that are incorporated with standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) and its variants under varying pricing schemes. In order to demonstrate the proposed DR-based real-time optimization, a residence in Chicago, Illinois, USA is taken as a case study for this work. The results demonstrate the quickness and proper optimizations of the PSO variants with butterfly-PSO performing the best among-st the rest. Continuous real-time pricing obtained the best solution with apt quickness among-st its counterparts for each time-slot and for cumulative time of the day. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) superposes several user signals for simultaneous transmission, considerably ameliorating spectral efficiency. To exploit efficiently radio frequency energy sources surrounding NOMA transmitters for improved energy efficiency, NOMA networks further employ energy harvesting, which practically possesses nonlinear characteristic. In addition, multiple antennas can be deployed at users to transfer-and-harvest energy efficiently and to transmit/receive information reliably with antenna array processing. As such, this paper evaluates numerically the throughput and the outage probability of NOMA networks accounting for practical factors such as nonlinear energy harvesting, all multi-antenna users, and imperfect channel information. Illustrative results expose that nonlinear energy harvesting and channel information imperfection considerably degrade system performance, which is governed flexibly by multiple parameters. Optimizing energy consumption in heterogeneous GPU clusters is of paramount importance to enhance overall system efficiency and reduce operational costs. However, the diversity of GPU types in heterogeneous GPU clusters poses challenges for energy optimization. In this paper, we propose an utilization-prediction-aware energy optimization approach for heterogeneous GPU clusters. We utilize a feature correlation-based method to select feature vectors and improve the prediction accuracy of our GPU utilization prediction model. By constructing a model for energy consumption and combining it with the predicted results, our approach can avoid wasting too much energy on idle GPUs and reduce the energy consumption of the heterogeneous GPU cluster. To validate our approach, experiments are conducted on real Alibaba data. The results show that our model achieved a good performance in predicting the utilization for four types of GPUs, with RMSE, MAE and R 2 average values of 7.08, 3.81 and 0.93, respectively. Moreover, we calculate the energy consumption of the GPU cluster before and after the adjustment, and estimate the energy savings, which amount to an average of 35.55%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heterogeneous computing has been developing continuously in the field of high-performance computing because of its high performance and energy efficiency. More and more accelerators have emerged, such as GPU, FPGA, DSP, AI accelerator, and so on. Usually, the accelerator is connected to the host CPU as a peripheral device to form a tightly coupled heterogeneous computing node, and then, a parallel system is constructed by multiple nodes. This organization is computationally efficient, but not flexible. When new accelerators appear, it is difficult to join the system that has been built. At the hardware level, we create an array of accelerators and connect them to the existing system through a high-speed network. At the software level, we dynamically organize computing resources from various arrays to build a virtual heterogeneous computing node. This approach also includes a standard programming environment. Therefore, it is a more flexible, elastic, and scalable heterogeneous computing organization. In this paper, a supernode OpenCL implementation is proposed for hybrid parallel computing systems, in which virtual supernodes can be dynamically constructed between different computing arrays, and a standard OpenCL environment is implemented based on RDMA communication of high-speed interconnection, which can be combined with the system-level MPI programming environment, thereby realizing the large-scale parallel computing of the hybrid array. SNCL is compatible with existing MPI/OpenCL programs without the need for additional modifications. Experiments show that the runtime overhead of the supernode OpenCL environment is very low, and it is suitable for deploying applications with high computing density and large data scale between different arrays to utilize their computing power without affecting scalability. Recently, there has been a growing interest in mixed-categorical metamodels based on Gaussian Process (GP) for Bayesian optimization. In this context, different approaches can be used to build the mixed-categorical GP. Many of these approaches involve a high number of hyperparameters; in fact, the more general and precise the strategy used to build the GP, the greater the number of hyperparameters to estimate. This paper introduces an innovative dimension reduction algorithm that relies on partial least squares regression to reduce the number of hyperparameters used to build a mixed-variable GP. Our goal is to generalize classical dimension reduction techniques commonly used within GP (for continuous inputs) to handle mixed-categorical inputs. The good potential of the proposed method is demonstrated in both structural and multidisciplinary application contexts. The targeted applications include the analysis of a cantilever beam as well as the optimization of a green aircraft, resulting in a significant 439-kilogram reduction in fuel consumption during a single mission. An industry-wide paradigm change has been sparked by the growth of Internet of Things (IoT)-based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which has made reliable and effective routing methods necessary. This thorough analysis looks at how Machine Learning (ML) techniques may be used to solve the problems that come with WSN routing. A summary of standard routing algorithms and an examination of their shortcomings comprise the first portion of the paper. The integration of ML approaches, such as reinforcement learning and supervised and unsupervised learning, is then explored in order to improve WSN routing efficiency. The article examines the difficulties and factors related to ML-based routing, including data quality, energy efficiency, scalability, and security. Applications and case studies show how ML is really used in WSN routing, offering insights into effective tactics and lessons discovered. Evaluation metrics and performance assessments are included in a separate section that uses simulation and experimental data to compare ML-based and conventional techniques. Looking forward, the study describes new breakthroughs in ML for WSNs and points out unresolved issues, providing a guide for future research paths. In recent days, the emerging ideas of hybridized network are used, which isbased on light fidelity (LiFi) and wireless fidelity (WiFi). The merging concept of LiFi and WiFirequires huge coverage area and reduce traffic overload. The classical Load Balancing (LB) technique aids to optimize the network throughput. Considering the handoveroverhead issue, this paper devises an effective access point selection (APS) and LB technique. The hybrid Lifi–Wifi is employed and location prediction is executed with Deep Long Short Term Memory (Deep LSTM). After accomplishing the location prediction, APS is carried out using the proposed Sewing Training Inspired Optimization (STIO), where the objective function considersSignal Noise Ratio and Shannon capacity. Further, the joint optimization of LB and handover is performed using STIO, where the user is handover to the selected AP. Finally, the multipath transmission control protocol is employed to transit the data. The proposed STIO-Deep LSTM outperformed with a smaller delay of 0.113 ms, ahigh energy efficiency of 0.097 Mbits/joules, asmall handover occurrence of 6.100, and ahigh network throughput of 0.905. This literature review presents a comprehensive review of life Cycle Assessmernt (LCA), as an emerging tool in the field of cultural heritage research and demonstrate how this tool could be useful to support the development of green heritage science into an environmentally responsible field of scientific endeavour. LCA is a standardised, structured, comprehensive, international environmental assessment tool and a rapidly evolving field of research that leverages and harmonises efforts across many sectors to inform environmentally-friendly solutions and choices. LCA has been growing in importance as an evidence-based tool in the field of heritage science, being used as a decision-support tool at micro level (typically for questions related to specific products/processes) and macro levels (e.g. strategies, scenarios, and policy options). This review explores applications of LCA (and the complementary Life Cycle Cost Assessment (LCC), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA)) to a wide array of conservation and preservation actions. The paper also examines challenges associated with the application of these life cycle-based methods in heritage science, in order to put forward a set of recommendations to guide the domain of heritage science towards greener and more sustainable practices and impacts. Based on a review of the principles of green chemistry, green analytical chemistry, green engineering, and nature conservation, the paper also attempts to formulate nine principles of green heritage science, taking into account the complexity of research challenges and the environmental and socio-economic sustainability. This paper investigates energy-efficient communication within an integrated sensing and communication system. The system employs a dual-function radar-communication base station. This base station concurrently serves multiple mobile users for communication purposes while also performing target sensing within a designated range cell. An active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is utilized to enhance communication efficiency. The focus of this work is to optimize the communication energy efficiency by jointly allocating the transmit power and configuring the RIS elements. This optimization is achieved while satisfying constraints on both the probing power required for target sensing and the quality-of-service demands of the communication users. Two novel optimization methods are proposed, combining techniques from alternating optimization, sequential programming, and fractional programming. Through numerical simulations, the effectiveness of the developed algorithms is validated. Additionally, the performance of the system utilizing an active RIS is compared to that of a system with a passive RIS, specifically in terms of their respective communication energy efficiencies. In view of the current problems of spectrum resource scarcity, return congestion, and insufficient energy utilization in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted Internet of Vehicles (IoV), this paper investigates the cooperative caching and power control, and proposes a joint optimization method to improve the overall Energy Efficiency (EE). In this method, we first propose a communication establishment threshold to control the V2V communication distance and serve as a joint optimization factor. Then we derive the closed form expressions of offloading ratio and EE of the UAV-assisted IoV, and formulate the optimization problem of maximizing EE. Due to the coupling relationship between caching strategy and transmission power, it is difficult for us to directly solve the optimization problem. Furthermore, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm for solving the optimization problem. Finally, the experimental simulation compare the propose joint optimization method with other existing optimization methods, and the simulation results prove the effectiveness and superiority of the propose joint optimization method.
