Deep learning, a crucial technique for achieving artificial intelligence (AI), has been successfully applied in many fields. The gradual application of the latest architectures of deep learning in the field of time series forecasting (TSF), such as Transformers, has shown excellent performance and results compared to traditional statistical methods. These applications are widely present in academia and in our daily lives, covering many areas including forecasting electricity consumption in power systems, meteorological rainfall, traffic flow, quantitative trading, risk control in finance, sales operations and price predictions for commercial companies, and pandemic prediction in the medical field. Deep learning-based TSF tasks stand out as one of the most valuable AI scenarios for research, playing an important role in explaining complex real-world phenomena. However, deep learning models still face challenges: they need to deal with the challenge of large-scale data in the information age, achieve longer forecasting ranges, reduce excessively high computational complexity, etc. Therefore, novel methods and more effective solutions are essential. In this paper, we review the latest developments in deep learning for TSF. We begin by introducing the recent development trends in the field of TSF and then propose a new taxonomy from the perspective of deep neural network models, comprehensively covering articles published over the past five years. We also organize commonly used experimental evaluation metrics and datasets. Finally, we point out current issues with the existing solutions and suggest promising future directions in the field of deep learning combined with TSF. This document is an editorial for a special issue titled "Machine Learning in Computer Vision and Image Sensing: Theory and Applications." The editorial highlights the diverse applications of machine learning (ML) models in various domains such as medical imaging, signal processing, remote sensing, and human activity detection. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. This paper not only validates the potential application of sEMG signals in the precise control of robotic arms but also lays a solid foundation for the development of more intuitive and responsive prostheses and assistive devices. This paper presents a novel sound event detection (SED) system for rare events occurring in an open environment. Wavelet multiresolution analysis (MRA) is used to decompose the input audio clip of 30 seconds into five levels. Wavelet denoising is then applied on the third and fifth levels of MRA to filter out the background. Significant transitions, which may represent the onset of a rare event, are then estimated in these two levels by combining the peak-finding algorithm with the K-medoids clustering algorithm. The small portions of one-second duration, called 'chunks' are cropped from the input audio signal corresponding to the estimated locations of the significant transitions. Features from these chunks are extracted by the wavelet scattering network (WSN) and are given as input to a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, which classifies them. The proposed SED framework produces an error rate comparable to the SED systems based on convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. Also, the proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and lightweight as compared to deep learning models, as it has no learnable parameter. It requires only a single epoch of training, which is 5, 10, 200, and 600 times lesser than the models based on CNNs and deep neural networks (DNNs), CNN with long short-term memory (LSTM) network, convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN), and CNN respectively. The proposed model neither requires concatenation with previous frames for anomaly detection nor any additional training data creation needed for other comparative deep learning models. It needs to check almost 360 times fewer chunks for the presence of rare events than the other baseline systems used for comparison in this paper. Deep neural networks are extensively used in text mining and Natural Language Processing is to enable computers to understand, analyze, and generate natural language data, such as text or speech, but semantic resources, such as taxonomies and ontologies, are not fully included in deep learning. In this paper, we use Deep Convolutional Neural Network (Deep CNN) to classify research papers using the Computer Science Ontology, an ontology of research areas in the field of computer science. It takes as input the abstract and keywords of a particular research paper and returns the relevant research topic. To evaluate our ontology, we used a gold standard dataset that includes research articles. To further improve text classification results, we propose to design a Deep CNN model. We then used ontology matching to reduce the classes and get better results. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the one with the highest precision, recall, and F1-score. Recent technological developments have enabled computers to identify and categorize facial expressions to determine a person's emotional state in an image or a video. This process, called "Facial Expression Recognition (FER)", has become one of the most popular research areas in computer vision. In recent times, deep FER systems have primarily concentrated on addressing two significant challenges: the problem of overfitting due to limited training data availability, and the presence of expression-unrelated variations, including illumination, head pose, image resolution, and identity bias. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on deep FER, encompassing algorithms and datasets that offer insights into these intrinsic problems. Initially, this paper presents a detailed timeline showcasing the evolution of methods and datasets in deep facial expression recognition (FER). This timeline illustrates the progression and development of the techniques and data resources used in FER. Then, a comprehensive review of FER methods is introduced, including the basic principles of FER (components such as preprocessing, feature extraction and classification, and methods, etc.) from the pro-deep learning era (traditional methods using handcrafted features, i.e., SVM and HOG, etc.) to the deep learning era. Moreover, a brief introduction is provided related to the benchmark datasets (there are two categories: controlled environments (lab) and uncontrolled environments (in the wild)) used to evaluate different FER methods and a comparison of different FER models. Existing deep neural networks and related training strategies designed for FER, based on static images and dynamic image sequences, are discussed. The surface texture of asphalt pavement has a significant effect on skid resistance performance. However, its contribution to the performance of skid resistance is non‐homogeneous and subjects to local validity. There are also a few deep learning models that take into account the effective contact texture region. This paper proposes a convolutional neural network model based on the effective contact texture region, containing macro‐ and micro‐scale awareness sub‐modules. In this study, the asphalt mixture with varying gradations was designed to accurately obtain the effective contact texture region. Then, the textures were disentangled into macro‐ and micro‐texture scales by applying the fast Fourier transform and fed into the model for training. Finally, the area of effective contact texture region was calculated, and the effective contact ratio parameter was then proposed using the triangulation algorithm. The results showed that the effective contact texture area of pavement varies by the asphalt mixture type. The effective contact ratio parameter exhibited a significant positive correlation (Pearson correlation coefficient is 0.901, R2= 0.8129) with skid resistance performance and was also influenced by key sieve aggregate content from 2.36 to 4.75 mm. The data of effective contact texture region following disentanglement significantly released the model performance (the relative error dropped to 1.81%). Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have the advantage of processing complex images and extracting feature information from the images, while long and short term memory networks (LSTMs) are good at processing data with sequential features. In this paper, based on the deep material network, we propose to apply the CNN-LSTM neural network model to the prediction of mechanical properties of carbon fibre composites. Then the experimental results are compared with the model prediction results, and the results show that the CNN-LSTM prediction of the mechanical properties of carbon fibre composites is within 5% of the corresponding tensile mechanical experimental results, which proves the accuracy of the CNN-LSTM neural network model in the prediction of the mechanical properties of carbon fibre composites. Deep learning shows great promise for medical image analysis but often lacks explainability, hindering its adoption in healthcare. Attribution techniques that explain model reasoning can potentially increase trust in deep learning among clinical stakeholders. In the literature, much of the research on attribution in medical imaging focuses on visual inspection rather than statistical quantitative analysis. In this paper, we proposed an image-based saliency framework to enhance the explainability of deep learning models in medical image analysis. We use adaptive path-based gradient integration, gradient-free techniques, and class activation mapping along with its derivatives to attribute predictions from brain tumor MRI and COVID-19 chest X-ray datasets made by recent deep convolutional neural network models. The proposed framework integrates qualitative and statistical quantitative assessments, employing Accuracy Information Curves (AICs) and Softmax Information Curves (SICs) to measure the effectiveness of saliency methods in retaining critical image information and their correlation with model predictions. Visual inspections indicate that methods such as ScoreCAM, XRAI, GradCAM, and GradCAM++ consistently produce focused and clinically interpretable attribution maps. These methods highlighted possible biomarkers, exposed model biases, and offered insights into the links between input features and predictions, demonstrating their ability to elucidate model reasoning on these datasets. Empirical evaluations reveal that ScoreCAM and XRAI are particularly effective in retaining relevant image regions, as reflected in their higher AUC values. However, SICs highlight variability, with instances of random saliency masks outperforming established methods, emphasizing the need for combining visual and empirical metrics for a comprehensive evaluation. The results underscore the importance of selecting appropriate saliency methods for specific medical imaging tasks and suggest that combining qualitative and quantitative approaches can enhance the transparency, trustworthiness, and clinical adoption of deep learning models in healthcare. This study advances model explainability to increase trust in deep learning among healthcare stakeholders by revealing the rationale behind predictions. Future research should refine empirical metrics for stability and reliability, include more diverse imaging modalities, and focus on improving model explainability to support clinical decision-making. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a condition that degenerates over time and impairs speech and pronunciation because brain cells have died. This research work aims to predict parkinson disease using the voice features extracted from speech signals recorded from PD individuals with dysphonic speech disorders by employing deep learning algorithms. PD is challenging to diagnose early on in the clinical presentation. To address the issue in machine learning methods, this paper proposes a neural network model by processing speech signals to classify PD using the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository dataset. Initially, a pre-loss reduction module is created by using pre-sampling to make the dataset balanced by reducing the dimensionality and maintaining the size of the space without influencing the learning process for data preparation. The relevant features are derived using a novel multi-agent salp swarm (MASS) algorithm, and a novel Parkinson classification neural network (PCNN) is proposed to classify Parkinson's patients with high accuracy employing these derived features. The result shows that the models that use MASS-PCNN produce higher classification accuracy of 99.1%, precision of 97.8%, recall of 94.7% and F1-score of 0.995 when paralleled to the existing models. The paper introduces a computer vision methodology for detecting pitting corrosion in gas pipelines. To achieve this, a dataset comprising 576,000 images of pipelines with and without pitting corrosion was curated. A custom-designed and optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) was employed for binary classification, distinguishing between corroded and non-corroded images. This CNN architecture, despite having relatively few parameters compared to existing CNN classifiers, achieved a notably high classification accuracy of 98.44%. The proposed CNN outperformed many contemporary classifiers in its efficacy. By leveraging deep learning, this approach effectively eliminates the need for manual inspection of pipelines for pitting corrosion, thus streamlining what was previously a time-consuming and cost-ineffective process. Several hardware Trojan (HT) detection techniques are available today to ensure the security of hardware systems. However, the existing pre-silicon HT detection techniques have problems such as difficulties in capturing HT path features and poor applicability. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a gate-level HT detection scheme based on a deep learning model. We parse the circuit gate-level netlist and develop an algorithm to extract circuit path sentences based on the signal propagation rule. Path sentences consisting of gate names are extracted as experimental datasets. We apply the theory of natural language processing (NLP) to the task of HT detection and use three neural networks to filter the length of path sentences. Then, based on the deep learning model text convolutional neural network (TextCNN), we propose PS-TextCNN for HT detection. Our approach is verified on seven benchmark circuits of the RS232-series and eight benchmark circuits of the s-series. We achieve an average true positive rate (TPR) of 88.9%. The TPR of the RS232-series reaches a high score of 99.5%. The TPR of the s-series is 79.5%, which is significantly higher than that of the existing gate-level HT detection techniques. Featured Application: The Deep Neural Network model employed in this work will help build a system for the pre-diagnosis of retinopathies that can lead to blindness. The main intention of this type of system is to support the work performed by ophthalmology specialists. Computer-based pre-diagnosis of diseases through medical imaging is a task worked on for many years. The so-called fundus images stand out since they do not have uniform illumination and are highly sensitive to noise. One of the diseases that can be pre-diagnosed through fundus images is age-related macular degeneration, which initially manifests as the appearance of lesions called drusen. Several ways of pre-diagnosing macular degeneration have been proposed, methods based entirely on the segmentation of drusen with prior image processing have been designed and applied, and methods based on image pre-processing and subsequent conversion to feature vectors, or patterns, to be classified by a Machine-Learning model have also been developed. Finally, in recent years, the use of Deep-Learning models, particularly Convolutional Networks, has been proposed and used in classification problems where the data are only images. The latter has allowed the so-called transfer learning, which consists of using the learning achieved in the solution of one problem to solve another. In this paper, we propose the use of transfer learning through the Xception Deep Convolutional Neural Network to detect age-related macular degeneration in fundus images. The performance of the Xception model was compared against six other state-of-the-art models with a dataset created from images available in public and private datasets, which were divided into training/validation and test; with the training/validation set, the training was made using 10-fold cross-validation. The results show that the Xception neural network obtained a validation accuracy that surpasses other models, such as the VGG-16 or VGG-19 networks, and had an accuracy higher than 80% in the test set. We consider that the contributions of this work include the use of a Convolutional Neural Network model for the detection of age-related macular degeneration through the classification of fundus images in those affected by AMD (drusen) and the images of healthy patients. The performance of this model is compared against other methods featured in the state-of-the-art approaches, and the best model is tested on a test set outside the training and validation set. Existing research in metasurface design was based on trial-and-error high-intensity iterations and requires deep acoustic expertise from the researcher, which severely hampered the development of the metasurface field. Using deep learning enabled the fast and accurate design of hypersurfaces. Based on this, in this paper, an integrated learning approach was first utilized to construct a model of the forward mapping relationship between the hypersurface physical structure parameters and the acoustic field, which was intended to be used for data enhancement. Then a dual-feature fusion model (DFCNN) based on a convolutional neural network was proposed, in which the first feature was the high-dimensional nonlinear features extracted using a data-driven approach, and the second feature was the physical feature information of the acoustic field mined using the model. A convolutional neural network was used for feature fusion. A genetic algorithm was used for network parameter optimization. Finally, generalization ability verification was performed to prove the validity of the network model. The results showed that 90% of the integrated learning models had an error of less than 3 dB between the real and predicted sound field data, and 93% of the DFCNN models could achieve an error of less than 5 dB in the local sound field intensity. Learning in neural networks with locally-tuned neuron models such as radial Basis Function (RBF) networks is often seen as instable, in particular when multi-layered architectures are used. Furthermore, universal approximation theorems for single-layered RBF networks are very well established; therefore, deeper architectures are theoretically not required. Consequently, RBFs are mostly used in a single-layered manner. However, deep neural networks have proven their effectiveness on many different tasks. In this paper, we show that deeper RBF architectures with multiple radial basis function layers can be designed together with efficient learning schemes. We introduce an initialization scheme for deep RBF networks based on k-means clustering and covariance estimation. We further show how to make use of convolutions to speed up the calculation of the Mahalanobis distance in a partially connected way, which is similar to the convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Finally, we evaluate our approach on image classification as well as speech emotion recognition tasks. Automatic building detection from remote sensing images holds significant applications in various domains, including cartography, land-use change detection, urban planning, and 3D intelligent city construction. Driven by the innovation of deep learning technology, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a powerful framework for automatic interpretation, exhibiting hierarchical feature generation and robust representation for building extraction. However, the inherent computational limitations of convolutional operators hinder the acquisition of an effective global receptive field. Recent advancements in deep learning have witnessed the adoption of the multi-head self-attention (MHSA) mechanism by Transformer, presenting the superiority of global context construction. Nonetheless, this network structure encounters difficulties in effectively modelling two-dimensional spatial structure features with scale variation in semantic segmentation and often has huge parameters with high algorithm complexity. To address the above problems, this paper proposed a hybrid deep neural network synergistically harnessing the superiority of CNN and Transformer to extract buildings from remote sensing images. Meanwhile, an improved MHSA mechanism is developed to facilitate the construction of multiscale global representations, concurrently reducing computational complexity. Furthermore, the cross-level MHSA modules the semantic correlation between the deep and shallow-level features to refine spatial fine-grained information. The proposed method was comprehensively evaluated on two building datasets via quantitative analysis and visualization. The experimental results confirmed that the developed network and modules outperform other state-of-the-art methods and can effectively improve the accuracy (93.4% F1-score on the WHU dataset, 89.38% F1-score on the CAMB dataset) with high efficiency for building extraction. This paper proposes a novel approach, BTC-SAGAN-CHA-MRI, for the classification of brain tumors using a SAGAN optimized with a Color Harmony Algorithm. Brain cancer, with its high fatality rate worldwide, especially in the case of brain tumors, necessitates more accurate and efficient classification methods. While existing deep learning approaches for brain tumor classification have been suggested, they often lack precision and require substantial computational time.The proposed method begins by gathering input brain MR images from the BRATS dataset, followed by a pre-processing step using a Mean Curvature Flow-based approach to eliminate noise. The pre-processed images then undergo the Improved Non-Sub sampled Shearlet Transform (INSST) for extracting radiomic features. These features are fed into the SAGAN, which is optimized with a Color Harmony Algorithm to categorize the brain images into different tumor types, including Gliomas, Meningioma, and Pituitary tumors. This innovative approach shows promise in enhancing the precision and efficiency of brain tumor classification, holding potential for improved diagnostic outcomes in the field of medical imaging. The accuracy acquired for the brain tumor identification from the proposed method is 99.29%. The proposed BTC-SAGAN-CHA-MRI technique achieves 18.29%, 14.09% and 7.34% higher accuracy and 67.92%,54.04%, and 59.08% less Computation Time when analyzed to the existing models, like Brain tumor diagnosis utilizing deep learning convolutional neural network with transfer learning approach (BTC-KNN-SVM-MRI); M3BTCNet: multi model brain tumor categorization under metaheuristic deep neural network features optimization (BTC-CNN-DEMFOA-MRI), and efficient method depending upon hierarchical deep learning neural network classifier for brain tumour categorization (BTC-Hie DNN-MRI) respectively. Deep neural networks have achieved outstanding performance in computer vision tasks. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) typically operate in the spatial domain with raw images, but in practice, images are usually stored and transmitted in their compressed representation where JPEG is one of the most widely used encoder. Also, these networks are computationally intensive and slow. This paper proposes performing the learning and inference processes in the compressed domain in order to reduce the computational complexity and improve the speed of popular CNNs. For this purpose, a novel graph-based frequency channel selection method is proposed to identify and select the most important frequency channels. The computational complexity is reduced by retaining the important frequency components and discarding the insignificant ones as well as eliminating the unnecessary layers of the network. Experimental results show that the modified ResNet-50 operating in the compressed domain is up to 70% faster than the spatial-based traditional ResNet-50 while resulting in similar classification accuracy. Moreover, this paper proposes a preprocessing step with partial encoding to improve the resilience to distortions caused by low-quality encoded images. Finally, we show that training a network with highly compressed data can achieve a good classification accuracy with up to 93% reduction in the storage requirements of the training data. This paper delves into the specialized domain of human action recognition, focusing on the Identification of Indian classical dance poses, specifically Bharatanatyam. Within the dance context, a "Karana" embodies a synchronized and harmonious movement encompassing body, hands, and feet, as defined by the Natyashastra. The essence of Karana lies in the amalgamation of nritta hasta (hand movements), sthaana (body postures), and chaari (leg movements). Although numerous, Natyashastra codifies 108 karanas, showcased in the intricate stone carvings adorning the Nataraj temples of Chidambaram, where Lord Shiva's association with these movements is depicted. Automating pose identification in Bharatanatyam poses challenges due to the vast array of variations, encompassing hand and body postures, mudras (hand gestures), facial expressions, and head gestures. To simplify this intricate task, this research employs image processing and automation techniques. The proposed methodology comprises four stages: acquisition and pre-processing of images involving skeletonization and Data Augmentation techniques, feature extraction from images, classification of dance poses using a deep learning network-based convolution neural network model (InceptionResNetV2), and visualization of 3D models through mesh creation from point clouds. The use of advanced technologies, such as the MediaPipe library for body key point detection and deep learning networks, streamlines the identification process. Data augmentation, a pivotal step, expands small datasets, enhancing the model's accuracy. The convolution neural network model showcased its effectiveness in accurately recognizing intricate dance movements, paving the way for streamlined analysis and interpretation. One of the predominant health issues affecting Saudi Arabia and leading to many complications is Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Early detection and significant preventative measures lead to curbing and controlling the health issue. There are fewer datasets in the literature for the detection of T2D in the Saudi population. Past studies using Saudi data have favoured machine learning algorithms to classify T2D. Although the application of this data in machine learning is evident, no studies exist in the literature that compare this data, especially those related to deep learning algorithms. This study's objective is to use specific Saudi data to develop multiple deep learning models that could be used to detect T2D. The research uses a Deep Neural Network (DNN), an Autoencoder (AE), and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to create predictive models and compare their performance with a traditional machine learning classifier used on the same dataset that outperformed other machine learning algorithms such as a Decision Forest (DF). Various metrics were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the models, such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score and area under the ROC curve (AUC) where the ROC acts as a receiver operating characteristic curve. There are two cases in this paper: (i) uses all features of the dataset and (ii) uses six of the ten features, such as DF. In case (i), the results were shown that AE outperformed other models with the highest accuracy for imbalanced and balanced data 81.12% and 79.16%, respectively. The results for case (ii) showed that AE scored the highest 81.01% accuracy with imbalanced data compared to DF and DF achieved the highest accuracy of 82.1% with balanced data. In this paper, we establish some analysis for linear feature extraction by a deep multi-channel convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which demonstrates the power of deep learning over traditional linear transformations, like Fourier, wavelets, redundant dictionary coding methods. Moreover, we give an exact construction presenting how linear features extraction can be conducted efficiently with multi-channel CNNs. It can be applied to lower the essential dimension for approximating a high-dimensional function. This paper introduces a deep learning approach for accurately predicting the position and size of cracks in steam turbine blades using frequency response function data obtained from finite element analysis. Training deep neural networks for crack prediction necessitates an extensive dataset comprising various crack conditions, along with corresponding position and size information. However, obtaining sufficient high-quality and well-balanced experimental data for diverse crack conditions poses challenges. To address this issue, we leverage finite element analysis techniques to effectively amass a large volume of training data. Our methodology involves frequency response analysis, incorporating a crack modeling approach based on node sharing elimination and model order reduction (MOR). Automating this process enables us to efficiently generate a diverse dataset of crack blade frequency response data in a short timeframe, focusing on cracks in a single blade. The collected data is then transformed into two-dimensional image data, including magnitude similarity maps and magnitude frequency response maps, which serve as training data for our convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Evaluation of the CNN model's performance and accuracy for crack position and size prediction highlights its remarkable precision in determining the initiation position and size of blade cracks. Utilizing the proposed prediction model, there was a 95 % probability of accurately predicting the crack position within 3.1 % of the entire airfoil area. Furthermore, successful crack size predictions were achieved for approximately 96.4 % of the entire test dataset within an error range of ±1 mm. This underscores the potential capability of neural network training and crack prediction by leveraging training data derived from the finite element analysis and MOR. Text-independent speaker verification (TI-SV) is a crucial task in speaker recognition, as it involves verifying an individual's claimed identity from speech of arbitrary content without any human intervention. The target for TI-SV is to design a discriminative network to learn deep speaker embedding for speaker idiosyncrasy. In this paper, we propose a deep speaker embedding learning approach of a hybrid deep neural network (DNN) for TI-SV in FM broadcasting. Not only acoustic features are utilized, but also phoneme features are introduced as prior knowledge to collectively learn deep speaker embedding. The hybrid DNN consists of a convolutional neural network architecture for generating acoustic features and a multilayer perceptron architecture for extracting phoneme features sequentially, which represent significant pronunciation attributes. The extracted acoustic and phoneme features are concatenated to form deep embedding descriptors for speaker identity. The hybrid DNN demonstrates not only the complementarity between acoustic and phoneme features but also the temporality of phoneme features in a sequence. Although some progress has been made through the application of artificial intelligence algorithms, several challenges remain. First, existing algorithms exhibit weak nonlinear feature extraction capabilities and noticeable limitations. Second, they overlook the intrinsic noise and redundant interference present in microscopic images. To address these issues, this paper investigates the automatic recognition of metallographic tissues by leveraging residual structures in deep neural networks. An enhanced residual network model based on transfer learning is proposed, which utilizes the pre-trained weights from the ImageNet dataset to facilitate learning with small sample data. This network offers higher classification accuracy and higher F1 scores. In addition, a deep residual shrinkage network model based on an attention mechanism is proposed. This model incorporates an attention sub-network into the original residual module and employs a soft threshold function to eliminate redundant features, including noise. The proposed algorithms are evaluated against various convolutional neural networks using 20 types of metallographic test sets. The experimental results showed that both methods have high accuracy rates of 95% and 94.44%, respectively, and F1 scores of 0.9464 and 0.9419. While maintaining the complexity of the model, there has been a significant improvement in accuracy, and the models exhibit strong generalization capabilities. Hyperspectral remote sensing images (HSIs) have both spectral and spatial characteristics. The adept exploitation of these attributes is central to enhancing the classification accuracy of HSIs. In order to effectively utilize spatial and spectral features to classify HSIs, this paper proposes a method for the spatial feature extraction of HSIs based on a mutually guided image filter (muGIF) and combined with the band-distance-grouped principal component. Firstly, aiming at the problem that previously guided image filtering cannot effectively deal with the inconsistent information structure between the guided and target information, a method for extracting spatial features using muGIF is proposed. Then, aiming at the problem of the information loss caused by a single principal component as a guided image in the traditional GIF-based spatial–spectral classification, a spatial feature-extraction framework based on the band-distance-grouped principal component is proposed. The method groups the bands according to the band distance and extracts the principal components of each set of band subsets as the guide map of the current band subset to filter the HSIs. A deep convolutional neural network model and a generative adversarial network model for the filtered HSIs are constructed and then trained using samples for HSIs' spatial–spectral classification. Accurate short-term load forecasting (STLF) is essential for power grid systems to ensure reliability, security and cost efficiency. Thanks to advanced smart sensor technologies, time-series data related to power load can be captured for STLF. Recent research shows that deep neural networks (DNNs) are capable of achieving accurate STLP since they are effective in predicting nonlinear and complicated time-series data. To perform STLP, existing DNNs use time-varying dynamics of either past load consumption or past power correlated features such as weather, meteorology or date. However, the existing DNN approaches do not use the time-invariant features of users, such as building spaces, ages, isolation material, number of building floors or building purposes, to enhance STLF. In fact, those time-invariant features are correlated to user load consumption. Integrating time-invariant features enhances STLF. In this paper, a fuzzy clustering-based DNN is proposed by using both time-varying and time-invariant features to perform STLF. The fuzzy clustering first groups users with similar time-invariant behaviours. DNN models are then developed using past time-varying features. Since the time-invariant features have already been learned by the fuzzy clustering, the DNN model does not need to learn the time-invariant features; therefore, a simpler DNN model can be generated. In addition, the DNN model only learns the time-varying features of users in the same cluster; a more effective learning can be performed by the DNN and more accurate predictions can be achieved. The performance of the proposed fuzzy clustering-based DNN is evaluated by performing STLF, where both time-varying features and time-invariant features are included. This paper aims to propose an improved image classification model to reduce the cost of model construction. Aiming at the problem that network training usually requires the support of a large number of labeled samples, an image classification model based on semi-supervised deep learning is proposed, which uses labeled samples to guide the network to learn unlabeled samples. A convolutional neural network model for simultaneous processing of labeled and unlabeled data is constructed. The tagged data is used to train the Softmax classifier and provide the initial K-means clustering center for the untagged data. The nonsubsampling contourlet layer is used to replace the first convolutional layer of the full convolutional neural network to extract multi-scale depth features, and the nonsubsampling contourlet full convolutional neural network is constructed. The network can extract multi-scale information of the images to be classified, and extract more discriminative deep image features. In addition, the parameters of the nonsubsampled contourlet layers are pre-set and do not require network training. According to statistics, over half a billion vehicles are moving on the roads worldwide. All vehicles have a license plate as their primary identifier, which is one of the most suitable tools for vehicle identification. Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) can be effective in improving road security, reducing traffic congestion, enhancing transportation efficiency, preventing car theft, and more. Traditional methods proposed for license plate detection mainly relied on manual feature extraction and lacked could not be generalized to variable image components in different conditions. With recent advancements in deep learning, algorithms have emerged that can automatically extract high-level representations of images in addition to learning complex image structures. Therefore, in this paper, the high capacity of deep neural networks is utilized for learning license plate identifiers. The proposed model consists of two stages: license plate localization and plate identification. For localization, a combination of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is used in an encoder-decoder network. Electricity load exhibits daily and weekly cyclical patterns as well as random characteristics. At present, prevailing deep learning models cannot learn electricity load cyclical and stochastic features adequately. This results in insufficient prediction accuracy and the scalability of current methods. To tackle these difficulties, this paper proposes a framework for electrical load prediction based on an Attention Mechanism Time Series Depthwise Separable Convolutional Neural Network (ELPF-ATDSCN). The framework starts by using the Maximum Information Coefficient for exogenous variable selection. It then incorporates a seasonal decomposition algorithm with manual feature engineering to extract the cyclical and stochastic features of the electrical load. Subsequently, the framework employs the ATDSCN to learn the cyclical and stochastic features of the electrical load. In addition, the Bayesian algorithm optimizes model hyperparameters for optimal model performance. Finally, an electrical potential change between electrical capacitance sensors electrodes corresponding to S f (t) over the time of creep for some levels of long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue (R f %) is recorded and then used in these datasets for training of the novel deep neural network based on one of the most widely used of the deep neural network families is the convolutional neural network, to predict S f (t) in pipeline for various R f % not included in the previous finite element model evaluation (i.e. electrical capacitance sensors technique). In this paper first is detected the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for R f % = 25 % , 50 % , and 75 % from a finite element model and modulus degradation approach, and then is predicted the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for R f % = 15 % , 35 % , 60 % , and 85 % respectively via deep neural network. This can be especially useful in the fields of human-computer interaction, psychology, and social science research. In this paper, a new system for detecting a speaker's age, gender, and language based on deep learning models is presented. Deep learning models have shown great efficacy in various fields of signal processing. For this paper, a range of deep models were tested, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural network (RNN), and a fine-tuning ResNet34 architecture. Additionally, techniques such as transfer learning were applied to improve the efficiency of the proposed system. The input voice signals are preprocessed by applying the spectro-temporal transform to obtain additional features that can be fed to the ResNet34 model, which is designed specifically for the task of voice signal processing. The dataset used in this paper was sourced from the Mozilla common voice initiative, which is dedicated to advancing speech recognition and language identification technologies. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated in the presence of Gaussian noise to determine its robustness. Marine ecosystems and their fish habitats are becoming increasingly important due to their integral role in providing a valuable food source and conservation outcomes. Due to their remote and difficult to access nature, marine environments and fish habitats are often monitored using underwater cameras to record videos and images for understanding fish life and ecology, as well as for preserve the environment. There are currently many permanent underwater camera systems deployed at different places around the globe. In addition, there exists numerous studies that use temporary cameras to survey fish habitats. These cameras generate a massive volume of digital data, which cannot be efficiently analysed by current manual processing methods, which involve a human observer. Deep Learning (DL) is a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that has demonstrated unprecedented performance in analysing visual data. Despite its application to a myriad of domains, its use in underwater fish habitat monitoring remains under explored. In this paper, we provide a tutorial that covers the key concepts of DL, which help the reader grasp a high-level understanding of how DL works. The tutorial also explains a step-by-step procedure on how DL algorithms should be developed for challenging applications such as underwater fish monitoring. In addition, we provide a comprehensive survey of key deep learning techniques for fish habitat monitoring including classification, counting, localisation, and segmentation. Furthermore, we survey publicly available underwater fish datasets, and compare various DL techniques in the underwater fish monitoring domains. We also discuss some challenges and opportunities in the emerging field of deep learning for fish habitat processing. This paper is written to serve as a tutorial for marine scientists who would like to grasp a high-level understanding of DL, develop it for their applications by following our step-by-step tutorial, and see how it is evolving to facilitate their research efforts. Skin diseases are reported to contribute 1.79% of the global burden of disease. The accurate diagnosis of specific skin diseases is known to be a challenging task due, in part, to variations in skin tone, texture, body hair, etc. Classification of skin lesions using machine learning is a demanding task, due to the varying shapes, sizes, colors, and vague boundaries of some lesions. The use of deep learning for the classification of skin lesion images has been shown to help diagnose the disease at its early stages. Recent studies have demonstrated that these models perform well in skin detection tasks, with high accuracy and efficiency. Our paper proposes an end-to-end framework for skin lesion classification, and our contributions are two-fold. Firstly, two fundamentally different algorithms are proposed for segmenting and extracting features from images during image preprocessing. Secondly, we present a deep convolutional neural network model, S-MobileNet that aims to classify 7 different types of skin lesions. We used the HAM10000 dataset, which consists of 10000 dermatoscopic images from different populations and is publicly available through the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) Archive. The image data was preprocessed to make it suitable for modeling. Exploratory data analysis (EDA) was performed to understand various attributes and their relationships within the dataset. A modified version of a Gaussian filtering algorithm and SFTA was applied for image segmentation and feature extraction. The processed dataset was then fed into the S-MobileNet model. This model was designed to be lightweight and was analyzed in three dimensions: using the Relu Activation function, the Mish activation function, and applying compression at intermediary layers. In addition, an alternative approach for compressing layers in the S-MobileNet architecture was applied to ensure a lightweight model that does not compromise on performance. The model was trained using several experiments and assessed using various performance measures, including, loss, accuracy, precision, and the F1-score. Our results demonstrate an improvement in model performance when applying a preprocessing technique. The Mish activation function was shown to outperform Relu. Further, the classification accuracy of the compressed S-MobileNet was shown to outperform S-MobileNet. To conclude, our findings have shown that our proposed deep learning-based S-MobileNet model is the optimal approach for classifying skin lesion images in the HAM10000 dataset. Distributed generation sources (e.g. photovoltaic, wind power) are raised to fit the energy demands recently in proficient way. Further, adoption of renewable energy sources to the smart grid causes severe issues in quality of power signals. These problems can be overcome with correct identification and classification of power quality disturbances (PQDs) efficiently by the both producer and consumer. In this work, a new method for classification of PQDs based on signal processing technique and deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is proposed. The proposed method compress the raw data of PQDs by using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and multi-resolution analysis (MRA). Moreover, CNN has the ability to automatic feature selection and classification in a single stage instead of conventional methods i.e. artificial neural networks (ANNs). In this paper, DWT 1D-CNN is designed to extract and optimize multi-scale characteristics of disturbances. Further, 1-D convolutional, pooling and batch-normalization layers are added to facilitate normalize data, better generalization ability and, effective classification process against noisy data. Alternating current optimal power flow (OPF) analysis is critical for efficient and reliable operation of power systems. For large systems or repetitive computations, the traditional methods such as the direct and gradient methods, or non-traditional methods, such as the genetic algorithm and simulating annealing, are time-consuming and unsuitable for real-time computing. The work in this paper proposes a novel framework to obtain the optimal solution of power flow in real-time using a combination of convolutional neural networks and a self-attention mechanism. All parameters of the power networks are rearranged in an image-like shape of a multi-channel image where each channel is a two-dimensional matrix. The proposed approach is adaptive with every input size of power systems as well as frequent variations of network topologies without intervention to the framework core. The encompassment of all power system contexts in which all parameters of internal elements, generation costs, and topology information are included, contributes to the higher accuracy of inference compared to other current machine-learning-based OPF-solving methods. Besides, the proposed framework established on ubiquitous platforms is effortlessly integrated into current infrastructures of power systems, and the great efficiency along with the computation speed may serve as a critical point for practical implications, such as enabling faster decision-making during real-time operations, predicting system contingencies, and remedial actions based on an offline pre-trained model. Dropout is a popular regularisation tool for deep neural classifiers, but it is applied regardless of the nature of the classification task: nominal or ordinal. Consequently, the order relation between the class labels of ordinal problems is ignored. In this paper, we propose the fusion of standard dropout and a new dropout methodology for ordinal classification regularising deep neural networks to avoid overfitting and improve generalisation, but taking into account the extra information of the ordinal task, which is exploited to improve performance. The correlation between the outputs of every neuron and the target labels is used to guide the dropout process: the higher the neuron is correlated with the expected labels, the lower its probability of being dropped. Given that randomness also plays a crucial role in the regularisation process, a balancing factor (β) is also added to the training process to determine the influence of the ordinality with respect to a constant probability, providing a hybrid ordinal regularisation method. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gained immense popularity in recent years, finding their utility in diverse fields such as image recognition, natural language processing, and bio-informatics. Despite the remarkable progress made in deep learning theory, most studies on CNNs, especially in regression tasks, tend to heavily rely on the least squares loss function. However, there are situations where such learning algorithms may not suffice, particularly in the presence of heavy-tailed noises or outliers. This predicament emphasizes the necessity of exploring alternative loss functions that can handle such scenarios more effectively, thereby unleashing the true potential of CNNs. In this paper, we investigate the generalization error of deep CNNs with the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function for robust regression problems within an information-theoretic learning framework. Our study demonstrates that when the regression function exhibits an additive ridge structure and the noise possesses a finite p th moment, the empirical risk minimization scheme, generated by the maximum correntropy criterion and deep CNNs, achieves fast convergence rates. Notably, these rates align with the mini-max optimal convergence rates attained by fully connected neural network model with the Huber loss function up to a logarithmic factor. Additionally, we further establish the convergence rates of deep CNNs under the maximum correntropy criterion when the regression function resides in a Sobolev space on the sphere. With the significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, more attention has been given to PV power forecasting. Indeed, accurate forecasting allows power grid operators to better schedule and dispatch their assets, such as energy storage systems and reserve. In this paper, a hybrid deep learning model and a convolutional neural network with memory is proposed, to provide intraday (2 h) solar irradiance forecasts using sequentially-collected images from public webcams. The performance of the proposed model is compared to those of a standard time-series forecast models, a linear regression as well as state-of-the-art neural networks. All models are trained and tested using images collected from two webcams on EPFL's campus for just over a year. Today, a significant content of the system on chips (SOCs) is dedicated to static random access memory (SRAM) cells. Due to the stress during SRAM operation, MOSFET aging is becoming an increasingly serious problem. The manufacturing variability of the MOSFETs causes further differences in the aging of various devices. This paper presents a simulation methodology using a deep neural network (DNN) to predict the performance of SRAM cells, taking into account the impacts of fabrication variations, temperature, and aging. A dataset of four input features and six output criteria is utilized, which are derived from power consumption, power supply transient current, signal rise time, read static noise margin (RSNM), and butterfly and N-curve. The accuracy of the long short-term memory (LSTM) model in predicting the performance of SRAM cells outperformed the other models such as multilayer perceptron (MLP), one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and recurrent neural network (RNN) by 1.85 % to 1.11 %. For instance, by processing the supply current data, the LSTM model achieved 97.41 %, 97.96 %, and 97.41 % accuracy in predicting the RMS power consumption, the signal rise time, and the average power supply current of the SRAM cell, respectively. • DNN successfully predicts the aging and process variation impact on SRAM performance. • Supply current illustrates superior results in performance prediction. • LSTM DNN model outperforms MLP, RNN, 1D-CNN, and GRU, exhibiting sufficient accuracy. This paper proposes a real-time state of health (SOH) estimation model based on a deep learning (DL) framework. The proposed model is a combination of two different architectures; a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU). The hybrid CNN-BiGRU uses the 1D CNN layers to extract pertinent features from input data and then relies on the BiGRU layers for sequence learning in both directions. To account for all SOH indicators, the proposed approach uses the current, voltage, and temperature measurements, which are readily obtainable from the electric vehicle's battery management system (BMS). This prevents the complex and time-consuming feature extraction used in most related papers. Since the hyperparameters have a significant impact on the performance of neural network models, a Bayesian Optimization (BO) technique based on the Gaussian Process (GP) was considered to tune the CNN-BiGRU model hyperparameters. Accordingly, the objective function was able to converge to a low Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 1.2 × 10 − 5 in just 19 iterations. Afterward, to verify the accuracy of the optimized model, a Lithium-ion battery dataset with several discharge profiles provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was used. The obtained results demonstrated the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method compared to other commonly used models. The CNN-BiGRU model yielded a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.080% and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 2.516% in the case of the battery set #C, referring to a set with 70 cycles already used at 24 °C. This innovative framework, which fuses CBAM with CNN, excels at extracting intricate features while prioritizing crucial ones, thereby facilitating the creation of a robust multi-output regression model. To expand the training dataset, we incorporated the C-Mixup algorithm, ensuring that the deep learning model was trained comprehensively. Additionally, the Bayesian optimization algorithm was introduced to optimize the hyperparameters, improving the prediction performance of the deep learning model. Compared with the commonly used Partial Least Squares (PLS), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models, the CBAM-CNN model yielded higher prediction accuracy. In this paper, we present an extensive review of the most recent works on Alzheimer's disease (AD) prediction, focusing on Moderate Cognitive Impairment (MCI) conversion prediction. We aimed to identify the most useful brain-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers and deep learning frameworks used for prediction. To achieve this, we analyzed more than 130 studies and reviewed 7 articles. A closer examination revealed that the hippocampus is an important region of interest (ROI) affected early by AD, and many related features help detect the disease in its early stages. However, when considered alone, this ROI is not sufficient to ensure high prediction performance. Therefore, several other brain regions can also provide additional information to improve prediction accuracy. Concerning state-of-the-art deep neural networks, the U-Net represents the most efficient architecture for hippocampus segmentation. The RESU-Net architecture achieved the highest Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) value, equal to 94%.For MCI conversion prediction, the best results were obtained by two models identifying significant landmarks from the entire brain for classification. The multi-stream convolutional neural network achieved the best Area Under the Curve (AUC) and specificity of 94.39% and 99.70%, respectively. • Soil reflectance composites were generated with Sentinel-2 L2A data. • A multi-channel CNN learning framework for soil organic carbon prediction is proposed. • A dual input deep learning architecture improves the predictions. • The framework produced results that can be interpreted. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery data may be aggregated to extract large-scale, bare soil, reflectance composites, which enable soil mapping applications. In this paper, this approach was tested in the German federal state of Bavaria, to provide estimations for soil organic carbon (SOC). Different temporal ranges were considered for the generation of the composites, including multi-annual and seasonal ranges. A novel multi-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. By leveraging the advantages of deep learning techniques, it utilizes complementary information from different spectral pre-treatment techniques. The SOC predictions indicated little dissimilarity amongst the different composites, with the best performance attained for the six-year composite containing only spring months (RMSE = 12.03 g C · kg−1, R2 = 0.64, RPIQ = 0.89). It has been demonstrated that these outcomes outperform other well-known machine learning techniques. An ablation analysis was accordingly performed to evaluate the interplay of the CNN's different components to disentangle the advantages of each aspect of the proposed framework. Finally, a DUal inPut deep LearnIng architecture, named DUPLICITE, is proposed, which concatenates deep spectral features derived from the CNN mentioned earlier, as well as topographical and environmental covariates through an artificial neural network (ANN) to exploit their complementarity. The results show that deep convolutional neural networks have significant advantages in denoising spatial heterodyne interferograms. The rapid growth of online music education has led to increased security risks from cyber intrusions. This paper proposes public cloud networks oriented deep neural networks for effective intrusion detection in online music education environments. Specifically, a novel intrusion detection framework is developed, comprising fuzzy logic based feature selection, chronological salp swarm algorithm optimized deep belief networks, and gated recurrent unit integrated convolutional neural networks. Detailed methodologies are presented for the fuzzy logic system, chronological salp optimization, deep belief network architecture, and convolutional neural networks. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on the NSL-KDD and CICIDS2017 datasets. Various deep neural networks are evaluated and compared, including multi-layer perceptrons, convolutional neural networks, deep belief networks, recurrent neural networks, and the proposed models. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed fuzzy feature selection and chronological salp swarm algorithm optimized deep belief network achieves a test accuracy of 97.33 %, outperforming other peer models. The gated recurrent unit integrated convolutional neural network obtains a test accuracy of 98.46 %, superior to state-of-the-art methods. While the experiments on the newly created dataset for intrusion detection in cloud-based online music education demonstrate that the proposed models outperform the benchmarks.
