• Five Machine Learning (ML) models compared for wave height time series prediction. • Complex ML models do not outperform simple AR in wave height time series prediction. • Comment to related papers: signal decomposition in test set series is WRONG. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Digital technologies sustain today's world. Every part of the world is working towards digital technologies, which none of us can eliminate. Recent increases in global food demand have made this research and, therefore, the prediction of agricultural commodity prices, almost imperative. The aim of this paper is to build efficient artificial intelligence methods to effectively forecast commodity prices in light of these global events. Using three separate, well-structured models, the commodity prices of eleven major agricultural commodities that have recently caused crises around the world have been predicted. In achieving its objective, this paper proposes a novel forecasting model for agricultural commodity prices using the extreme learning machine technique optimized with the genetic algorithm. In predicting the eleven commodities, the proposed model, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm, outperforms the model formed by the combination of long short-term memory with the genetic algorithm and the autoregressive integrated moving average model. Despite the fluctuations and changes in agricultural commodity prices in 2022, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm model described in this study successfully predicts both qualitative and quantitative behavior in such a large number of commodities and over such a long period of time for the first time. It is expected that these predictions will provide benefits for the effective management, direction and, if necessary, restructuring of agricultural policies by providing food requirements that adapt to the dynamic structure of the countries. As semiconductor performance improves through advanced package designs, it becomes important to consider both thermal and mechanical properties. Better understanding their relationship enhances system design and optimization. This study has introduced a numerical method that takes into account both thermal and mechanical fluxes to construct thermal and mechanical property maps for practical application in semiconductor engineering. Furthermore, this paper investigated the relationship between the two properties using the constructed property maps in commercially available semiconductor packages. Owing to the complexity of packaging design patterns, a coupled isoparametric mapping and machine learning (ML) method was introduced to investigate their effects. The model then determines and investigates the anisotropic equivalent thermal and mechanical properties of the commercialized semiconductor packages with complex pattern designs, according to the package materials, volume fractions of each material, and design patterns. This approach pursues more sophistication and practicality compared to simplified composite structure property evaluation models. Additionally, all processes in the algorithm are automated based on ML methods, making them practically applicable in the semiconductor industry. The study shows that there is a strong correlation between the thermal and mechanical characteristics in the complex package patterns. This relationship was able to form a fairly clear category based on the shape of the dielectric band because the dielectric band had significantly different effects on the thermal and mechanical fluxes. The study discussed the physical implications of the similarities and differences between the two behaviors and validated the results of the equivalent properties through finite element (FE) analysis. Finally, the study cross-validates the relationship by showing that information from one flux behavior can be used to predict the other based on the ML method. Giga-casting, a revolutionary approach for manufacturing large, single-piece car body components from aluminium, has emerged as a potential game-changer in the automotive industry. However, these large, thin-walled castings are prone to distortions during solidification and heat treatment processes. Straightening these distortions is crucial to ensure structural integrity, facilitate downstream assembly, and maintain aesthetic qualities. This paper proposes a novel method for straightening giga-cast components using a multi-pin straightening machine. The machine's versatility stems from its ability to adapt to various geometries through multiple strategically controlled straightening pins. This paper introduces the concept of a "straightening stroke decision algorithm" to achieve precise straightening and overcome the challenges of complex shapes. This algorithm determines the stroke length for each pin, combining a polynomial model representing the global stiffness of the component with a machine learning model that captures the stiffness changes arising from the current geometry. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated through comprehensive numerical experiments using finite element analyses. The straightening performance is assessed for the straightening algorithm with different machine learning models (deep neural network and XGBoost) and compared to a traditional optimisation method. The proposed surrogate models decided the straightening strokes so that the maximum remaining distortion became 0.02% of the largest dimension of each target geometry. Pattern recognition systems always misclassify anomalies, which can be dangerous for uninformed users. Therefore, anomalies must be filtered out from each classification. The main challenge for the anomaly filter design is the huge number of possible anomaly samples compared with the number of samples in the training set. Tailoring the filter for the given classifier is just the first step in this reduction. Paper tests the hypothesis that the filter trained in avoiding "near" anomalies will also refuse the "far" anomalies, and the anomaly detector is then just a classifier distinguishing between "far real" and "near anomaly" samples. As a "far real" samples generator was used, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) fake generator that transforms normally distributed random seeds into fakes similar to the training samples. The paper proves the assumption that seeds unused in fake training will generate anomalies. These seeds are distinguished according to their Chebyshev norms. While the fakes have seeds within the hypersphere with a given radius, the near anomalies have seeds within the sphere near cover. Experiments with various anomaly test sets have shown that GAN-based anomaly detectors create a reliable anti-anomaly shield using the abovementioned assumptions. The proposed anomaly detector is tailored to the given classifier, but its limitation is due to the need for the availability of the database on which the classifier was trained. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. This paper not only validates the potential application of sEMG signals in the precise control of robotic arms but also lays a solid foundation for the development of more intuitive and responsive prostheses and assistive devices. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. The issue of traffic mismanagement is getting bad to worse as the trend of urbanization is increasing and posing significant threats to the urban areas. This paper addresses this issue of traffic mismanagement by proposing a Fog-Cloud centric Internet of Things (IoT)-based collaborative framework that enables machine learning-based situation-aware traffic management. This framework monitors the traffic dynamics at the fog layer for providing real-time analytics to the cloud and enabling the traffic situation-aware routing of the vehicles. Whereas the framework at the cloud layer determines the situation-aware analytics by predicting Waiting Time (WaT), Waiting Queue Length (WQueL) and next green phase duration (G) for each Traffic Movement Signal Point (TMSP) based on the real-time data and analytics provided by the fog layer. The road-infrastructure hosted fog layer classifies the In-schedule Reachability Status (IRS) that determines the ability of the vehicle to reach the respective TMSP down the lane before the start of the next green phase. After classifying all such vehicles on a lane by the fog layer, the cloud layer predicts the optimal duration of the next green phase at that respective TMSP to reduce the traffic congestion on the respective junction point and subsequently provides these area-wide analytics to the vehicle hosted fog nodes and traffic controllers on the respective junction points. The vehicles use these analytics for enabling situation-aware vehicle routing functionality by selecting a time optimized path and enabling balanced traffic load on all possible paths. The framework employs Logistic Regression (LR) for IRS classification at the fog layer and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for traffic prediction at the respective TMSP at the cloud layer. The result depiction acknowledges LR's efficiency compared to other employed classifiers in terms of various statistical parameters. The optimal performance of ANN at the learning rate (LeR) of 0.1, momentum rate (MoR) of 0.95, and 500 epochs depict the prediction efficiency of ANN as compared to other used prediction approach. Recent research has revealed that subtle imperceptible perturbations can deceive well-trained neural network models, leading to inaccurate outcomes. These instances, known as adversarial examples, pose significant threats to the secure application of machine learning techniques in safety-critical systems. In this paper, we delve into the study of one-pixel attacks in deep neural networks, recently reported as a kind of adversarial examples. To identify such one-pixel attacks, most existing methodologies rely on the differential evolution method, which utilizes random selection from the current population to escape local optima. However, the differential evolution technique might waste search time and overlook good solutions if the number of iterations is insufficient. Hence, in this paper, we propose a gradient ascent with momentum approach to efficiently discover good solutions for the one-pixel attack problem. As our method takes a more direct route to the goal compared to existing methods relying on blind random walks, it can effectively identify one-pixel attacks. Artificial Intelligence is quickly emerging as a technological solution for the agriculture industry to surmount its classical challenges. Artificial Intelligence is facilitating farmers to refine their products and alleviate unfavourable impacts due to the environment. The central concern of this paper is predictive analytics to develop a machine learning model to identify and predict crop yield based on multiple environmental factors. In this paper, a hybrid learner 'RaNN' is proposed that combines the feature sampling and majority voting technique of Random Forest in-combination with the multilayer Feedforward Neural Network to predict the crop yield. Research has also ascertained the essential features responsible for accurate yield prediction. The proposed model works for rice yield prediction, one of the chief grains of India. The region chosen for the work is Punjab, which is among the largest producer states of India for rice. The dataset consists of 15 attributes comprising the weather and agriculture data collected from the Indian Meteorological Department Pune, and Punjab Environment Information System (ENVIS) Center, Government of India. The study has also made a comparative assessment of 'RaNN' with machine learning methods like Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Boosting Regression, Support Vector Machine Regression, Ensemble Learner, and Artificial Neural Network. Our model RaNN has listed a better prediction accuracy with minimal error among the other techniques providing a 98% correlation between the actual and the predicted yield. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. Despite the complex punching shear behavior of reinforced concrete slabs have been comprehensively addressed in the literature, it is further essential to develop a universal design model comprising high accuracy and the simplicity for design practicability, adaptable to diverse conditions encountered in practice. Artificial intelligence applications, artificial neural networks (ANN), and more recently, various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques veer off in a new direction in structural engineering context with improved accuracy and efficiency. The paper begins with the assessment of the capabilities of various artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of slab-column connections without shear reinforcement through the extensive database using 650 punching shear experiments from the literature. Critical parameters influencing the punching shear strength as well as the precision of the current code provisions in predicting this feature were then thoroughly examined in the paper. The results shown in this paper validated the competency of artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of such connections with increased accuracy and improved simplicity in practical terms. The use of explosives to target civilian buildings and other structures around the world is becoming a growing problem in modern societies. This paper focuses on RC beams exposed to free air blast loads. The paper first presents a parametric study on the behavior of RC beams subjected to blast loads using finite element simulation and then proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to predict that behavior in a simple and easy manner. The ABAQUS program is used to simulate RC beams under blast loads. Experimental data was collected from the literature and used to validate the ABAQUS models. Deflection, reaction forces, ultimate stress, ultimate strain, and failure mode of RC beams are investigated. The considered design parameters in the parametric study are the characteristic compressive strength of concrete (fcu), the transverse reinforcement ratio (ρT%), the longitudinal reinforcement ratio (ρL%), and the scaled distance (Z). In this paper, the proposed ANN model was trained and tested using datasets produced using ABAQUS. The input parameters of the ANN model are TNT weight, standoff distance (D), characteristic compressive strength of concrete, transverse reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, width-to-thickness ratio (b/t), and length-to-thickness ratio (L/t). The predicted behavior using the ANN model showed the credibility of the model. The results indicated that L/t, b/t, and Z have significant effects on the behavior of RC beams under blast loads compared with fcu, ρT%, and ρL%, the cracks area increases with the decrease in Z, fcu, and b/t and decreases with L/t decrease. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the utilization of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in learning models that address the nonlinear anisotropic flow and hysteresis retention behavior of deformable porous materials. Herein, the micro‐geometries of various networks of porous Bentheimer Sandstones subjected to several degrees of strain from the literature are considered. For the generation of the database required for the training, validation, and testing of the machine learning (ML) models, single‐phase and biphasic lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulations are performed. The anisotropic nature of the intrinsic permeability is investigated for the single‐phase LB simulations. Thereafter, the database contains the computed average fluid velocities versus the pressure gradients. In this database, the range of applied fluid pressure gradients includes Darcy as well as non‐Darcy flows. The generated output from the single‐phase flow simulations is implemented in a feed‐forward neural network, representing a path‐independent informed graph‐based model. Concerning the two‐phase LB simulations, the Shan‐Chen multiphase LB model is used to generate the retention curves of the cyclic drying/wetting processes in the deformed porous networks. Consequently, two different ML path‐dependent approaches, that is, 1D convolutional neural network and the recurrent neural network, are used to model the biphasic flow through the deformable porous materials. A comparison in terms of accuracy and speed of training between the two approaches is presented. Conclusively, the outcomes of the papers show the capability of the ML models in representing constitutive relations for permeability and hysteretic retention curves accurately and efficiently. The number of papers on machine learning and deep neural networks applied to intrusion detection systems (IDS) is ever-increasing. Differently from existing work on the topic, this paper explores the effect of training-time randomness of deep neural networks, which is overlooked by the related literature. Training-time randomness is regulated by the seed of the pseudorandom number generator, and affects the performance of IDS models. The seed selection is studied in conjunction with other critical learning parameters: to the best of our knowledge, there are no similar studies in IDS. The experiments are done with a recent and widely consolidated intrusion detection benchmark, which is used to train and test a neural network under different combinations of seeds and parameters both in supervised and semi-supervised learning modes. The results are inferred by a mixture of explorative analysis, design of experiments, and analysis of variance. According to the results, the choice of the seed yields either excellent or scarce detection metrics; more importantly, the seed selection might be as relevant as the other major learning parameters assessed. Super-computing or HPC clusters are built to provide services to execute computationally complex applications. Generally, these HPC applications involve large scale IO (input/output) processing over the networked parallel file system disks. They are commonly developed on top of the C/C++ based MPI standard library. The HPC clusters MPI–IO performance significantly depends on the particular parameter value configurations, not generally considered when writing the algorithms or programs. Therefore, this leads to poor IO and overall program performance degradation. The IO is mostly left to individual practitioners to be optimised at code level. This usually leads to unexpected consequences due to IO bandwidth degradation which becomes inevitable as the file data scales in size to petabytes. To overcome the poor IO performance, this research paper presents an approach for auto-tuning of the configuration parameters by forecasting the MPI–IO bandwidth via artificial neural networks (ANNs), a machine learning (ML) technique. These parameters are related to MPI–IO library and lustre (parallel) file system. In addition to this, we have identified a number of common configurations out of numerous possibilities, selected in the auto-tuning process of READ/WRITE operations. These configurations caused an overall READ bandwidth improvement of 65.7% with almost 83% test cases improved. In addition, the overall WRITE bandwidth improved by 83% with number of test cases improved by almost 93%. As the world's transport infrastructure ages, the importance of bridge condition monitoring is becoming increasingly acknowledged. Large-scale deployment of existing inspection and monitoring techniques is infeasible due to cost and logistical challenges. The concept of using sensors located within vehicles for low cost 'drive-by' monitoring has become the focus of much attention in recent years. This paper presents a new data-driven approach for drive-by bridge monitoring. Machine learning techniques are leveraged to allow the influence of vehicle speed to be considered and the Operating Deflection Shape Ratio (ODSR) is presented as an alternative damage-sensitive feature to the commonly used frequency spectrum. Extensive laboratory experiments demonstrate that the method is capable of detecting midspan cracking and seized bearings. A statistical classification approach is adopted to classify damage indicators as either 'damaged' or 'healthy'. Classification accuracy is seen to vary between 65-96% and is similar whether using the frequency spectrum or ODSR. Based on the results of the laboratory testing, it is expected that this approach could be implemented on a large scale to act as an early warning tool for infrastructure owners to identify bridges presenting signs of distress or deterioration. PIN diodes, due to their simple structure and variable resistance characteristics under high-frequency high-power excitation, are often used in radar front-end as limiters to filter high power microwaves (HPM) to prevent its power from entering the internal circuit and causing damage. This paper carries out theoretical derivation and research on the HPM effects of PIN diodes, and then uses an optimized neural network algorithm to replace traditional physical modeling to calculate and predict two types of HPM limiting indicators of PIN diode limiters. We proposes a neural network model for each of the following two prediction scenarios: in the scenario of time-junction temperature curves under different HPM irradiation, the weighted mean squared error (MSE) between the predicted values from the test dataset and the simulated values is below 0.004. While in predicting PIN limiter's power limitation threshold, insertion loss, and maximum isolation under different HPM irradiation, the MSE of the test set prediction values and simulation values are all less than 0.03. The method proposed in this research, which applies an optimized neural network algorithm to replace traditional physical modeling algorithms for studying the high-power microwave effects of PIN diode limiters, significantly improves the computational and simulation speed, reduces the calculation cost, and provides a new method for studying the high-power microwave effects of PIN diode limiters. Once realized, autonomous aerial refueling will revolutionize unmanned aviation by removing current range and endurance limitations. Previous attempts at establishing vision-based solutions have come close but rely heavily on near perfect extrinsic camera calibrations that often change midflight. In this paper, we propose dual object detection, a technique that overcomes such requirement by transforming aerial refueling imagery directly into receiver aircraft reference frame probe-to-drogue vectors regardless of camera position and orientation. These vectors are precisely what autonomous agents need to successfully maneuver the tanker and receiver aircraft in synchronous flight during refueling operations. Our method follows a common 4-stage process of capturing an image, finding 2D points in the image, matching those points to 3D object features, and analytically solving for the object pose. However, we extend this pipeline by simultaneously performing these operations across two objects instead of one using machine learning and add a fifth stage that transforms the two pose estimates into a relative vector. Furthermore, we propose a novel supervised learning method using bounding box corrections such that our trained artificial neural networks can accurately predict 2D image points corresponding to known 3D object points. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a condition that degenerates over time and impairs speech and pronunciation because brain cells have died. This research work aims to predict parkinson disease using the voice features extracted from speech signals recorded from PD individuals with dysphonic speech disorders by employing deep learning algorithms. PD is challenging to diagnose early on in the clinical presentation. To address the issue in machine learning methods, this paper proposes a neural network model by processing speech signals to classify PD using the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository dataset. Initially, a pre-loss reduction module is created by using pre-sampling to make the dataset balanced by reducing the dimensionality and maintaining the size of the space without influencing the learning process for data preparation. The relevant features are derived using a novel multi-agent salp swarm (MASS) algorithm, and a novel Parkinson classification neural network (PCNN) is proposed to classify Parkinson's patients with high accuracy employing these derived features. The result shows that the models that use MASS-PCNN produce higher classification accuracy of 99.1%, precision of 97.8%, recall of 94.7% and F1-score of 0.995 when paralleled to the existing models. The development of fragility curves is an important step in seismic risk assessment within the scope of performance‐based earthquake engineering. The goal of this work is to use machine learning methods (regression‐based tools) to forecast the large‐span precast parking structural responses and fragility curves. This study proposes five predicting models based on machine learning to evaluate the seismic performance of the large‐span precast parking structures, including: neural networks, genetic algorithm‐based neural networks, support vector machine, decision tree and random forest. A database that includes 453 numerical synthetic results was used to train and test the machine learning models. The seismic performance of large‐span precast parking structures were predicted using the constructed machine learning models. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of input parameters was conducted. From this paper we can conclude that: (1) the genetic optimization‐based neural networks' predicting model has the most accurate predictive ability for seismic fragility estimation and (2) the structural responses and the fragility curves of parking structures are related to the differences of the stiffness of the connectors and the number of floors, of which the stiffness of the connectors should be given special attention. The paper explores the possibilities of using data classification methods when forecasting time series of the geomagnetic Kp-index by machine learning methods. To classify categories of the Kp-index based on the degree of disturbance, linear and logistic regression, random forest, gradient boosting on top of decision trees, and artificial neural networks of various architectures are used. The results of these methods are compared with a trivial inertial forecast (the statistical indicators of which for problems of this type are always high) at horizons from 3 h to 1 day in 3-h increments. The problem of choosing a cross-validation scheme for selecting the model hyperparameters, ways to overcome the imbalance of categories, the relative importance of input features, as well as the dependence of the results on the test sample (beginning of the 25th solar activity cycle) on inclusion in the training sample of data from the 23rd and 24th cycles or only the 24th cycles are studied. Based on the results, conclusions are drawn about the preferred methods for classifying values of the Kp-index based on the level of geomagnetic disturbance. Ways for further research and possible improvement of the classification quality are outlined, including for determining the characteristic hidden states of Earth's magnetosphere as a dynamic system in order to improve the quality of forecasting geomagnetic indices. In this paper, a novel machine-learning based models are presented to predict the effect of notch depth on elastic new strain-concentration factor of rectangular bars with single edge U-notch under combined loading of static tension and pure bending. Regarding the importance of this study, the database with 162 samples is utilized to develop the new methodology of machine learning based models. The database includes the notch radius, the Poisson's ratio, and the thick ratio that represent the influential inputs. The predicted key feature is the elastic new strain-concentration factor under combined loading of static tension and pure bending. These samples were tested with high precision and the predicted values of SNCF were obtained. For comparison, adaptive neural fuzzy inference system, artificial neural network, fine tree, ensemble boosted tree, and ensemble optimized bagged tree were designed and developed in this study. To evaluate and compare the performance of the models, four statistical indices of MAE, MSE, root mean square error (RMSE)and determination coefficient (R) were utilized. Based on the results, all models can predict the SNCF appropriately. However, the Ensemble optimized Bagged tree model had a better performance than other models and it had a significant priority in term of prediction accuracy. Finally, the results indicated that the elastic SNCF increased with increasing notch depth from 0.2 ≤ ho/Ho ≤ 0.7 and sharply decreases with increasing notch depth for shallow notches (0.8 ≤ ho/Ho ≤ 0.95). A variant of membrane computing models called Spiking Neural P systems (SNP systems) closely mimics the structure and behavior of biological neurons. As third-generation neural networks, SNP systems have flexible architectures allowing the design of bio-inspired machine learning algorithms. This paper proposes Modular Spiking Neural P (MSNP) systems to solve image classification problems, a novel SNP system to be applied in scenarios where hundreds or even thousands of different classes are considered. A main issue to face in such situations is related to the structural complexity of the network. MSNP systems devised in this work allow to approach the general classification problem by dividing it in smaller parts, that are then faced by single entities of the network. As a benchmark dataset, the Oxford Flowers 102 dataset is considered, consisting of more than 8000 pictures of flowers belonging to the 102 species commonly found in the UK. These classes sometimes present large variations within them, may be also very similar to one another, and different images of the same subject may differ a lot. The work describes the architecture of the MSNP system, based on modules focusing on a specific class, their training phase, and the evaluation of the model both concerning result accuracy as well as energy consumption. Experimental results on image classification problems show that the model achieves good results, but is strongly connected to image quality, mainly depending on the frequency of images, remarkable changes of pose, images not centered, and subject mostly not shown. The automotive S-rail plays a crucial role in frontal car crashes, aiming to absorb impact energy and reduce passenger injury. This paper innovatively presents an optimization approach to determine the optimal configuration of an S-rail featuring a tapered, multicell front section. The structural design of the S-rail is conceptualized within the design space of a heavy quadricycle vehicle and subsequently subjected to numerical investigation through LS-DYNA using nonlinear explicit dynamics analyses. The objective is to maximize energy absorption while minimizing the S-rail's initial peak force (IPF) and mass. An artificial neural network (ANN) is employed to construct surrogate models for the optimization process. The non dominated sorting genetic algorithm, integrated with the ANN, yields an optimal S-rail design. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, using the mean weighting method on the Pareto frontier optimal solution set, is appropriately applied to select the optimal solution. The optimized S-rail shows improved specific energy absorption compared to the baseline model while maintaining a low IPF. In conclusion, this study highlights the superior predictability of an ANN over conventional quadratic response surface methodology. The results confirm the effectiveness of the ANN-based optimization approach and the selection of a compromise solution using the TOPSIS technique. Using multiple input power sources increases the reliability of electric vehicles compared to a single source. However, the inclusion of other sources exhibits complexity in the controller system, such as computing time, program difficulty, and switching speed to connect or disconnect the input power to load. To ensure optimal performance and avoid overloading issues, the EV system needs sophisticated control. This work introduces a machine-learning-based controller using an artificial neural network to solve these problems. This paper describes the detailed power management control methodology using multiple sources like solar PV, fuel cells, and batteries. Novel control with an instantaneous reference current scheme is used to manage the input power sources to satisfy the power demand of electric vehicles. The proposed work executes the power split-up operation with standard and actual drive cycles and maximum power point tracking for PV panels using MATLAB Simulink. Finally, power management with a machine learning technique is implemented in an experimental analysis with the LabVIEW software, and an FPGA controller is used to control a 48 V, 1 kW permanent-magnet synchronous machine. In order to improve the reliability and life of the wind turbine, this paper takes the rolling bearing in the experimental platform of the wind turbine as the research object. In order to obtain the intrinsic mode function (IMF) of each fault type, the original signals of different fault states of the rolling bearing on the experimental platform are decomposed by using the overall average empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD) and the wavelet packet decomposition method (WPD), respectively. Then the energy ratio of the IMF component of the different types of faults to the total energy value is calculated and the eigenvectors of different types of faults are constructed. The extreme learning machine (ELM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) are used to learn fault types and eigenvector samples to identify the faults of the rolling bearing. It is found that the bearing fault characteristics obtained by the WPD method are more obvious, and the results obtained by the same recognition method are ideal; and the PNN method is obviously superior to the extreme learning machine method in bearing fault recognition rate. This paper presents the results of a study on data preprocessing and modeling for predicting corrosion in water pipelines of a steel industrial plant. The use case is a cooling circuit consisting of both direct and indirect cooling. In the direct cooling circuit, water comes into direct contact with the product, whereas in the indirect one, it does not. In this study, advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting and deep neural networks, have been employed for two distinct applications. Firstly, a virtual sensor was created to estimate the corrosion rate based on influencing process variables, such as pH and temperature. Secondly, a predictive tool was designed to foresee the future evolution of the corrosion rate, considering past values of both influencing variables and the corrosion rate. The results show that the most suitable algorithm for the virtual sensor approach is the dense neural network, with MAPE values of (25 ± 4)% and (11 ± 4)% for the direct and indirect circuits, respectively. In contrast, different results are obtained for the two circuits when following the predictive tool approach. For the primary circuit, the convolutional neural network yields the best results, with MAPE = 4% on the testing set, whereas for the secondary circuit, the LSTM recurrent network shows the highest prediction accuracy, with MAPE = 9%. This paper presents an analysis and prediction of the shear strength of wide-shallow reinforced concrete beams, utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and machine learning techniques. The methodology involves validating a detailed Finite Element Model (FEM) against experimental results, conducting a parametric study, and developing three Machine Learning prediction equations. The FEM captures concrete and steel behaviors, including cracking and crushing for concrete and linear isotropic properties for steel reinforcement. Loading and boundary conditions are defined for accuracy and validated against 13 experimental specimens, exhibiting a maximum 8% and 12% difference in loads and deflections, respectively. A parametric study generates a dataset of 77 wide beam configurations, exploring variations in beam widths, concrete strengths, compression rebars, and shear reinforcement. This dataset is used to develop machine learning models, including "Genetic Programming (GP)", "Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR)", and "Artificial Neural Network (ANN)". Comparative analysis reveals GP and EPR models with over 95% correlation, while the ANN model outperforms with 99% accuracy. Sensitivity analysis underscores the significant influence of concrete strength and beam aspect ratio on shear strength. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the potential of FEA and machine learning models to predict shear strength in wide-shallow reinforced concrete beams, providing valuable insights for architectural design and engineering practices and emphasizing the role of concrete strength and beam geometry in shear behavior. Background and objectives: This review aims to delve into the role of artificial intelligence in medicine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by superficial mucosal inflammation, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. By identifying the challenges inherent in UC diagnosis, we seek to highlight the potential impact of artificial intelligence on enhancing both diagnosis and treatment methodologies for this condition. Method: A targeted, non-systematic review of literature relating to ulcerative colitis was undertaken. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to categorize a well-rounded understanding of the field of artificial intelligence and its developing role in the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Articles that were thought to be relevant were included. This paper only included articles published in English. Results: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer algorithms capable of learning, problem solving and decision-making. Throughout our review, we highlighted the role and importance of artificial intelligence in modern medicine, emphasizing its role in diagnosis through AI-assisted endoscopies and histology analysis and its enhancements in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Despite these advances, AI is still hindered due to its current lack of adaptability to real-world scenarios and its difficulty in widespread data availability, which hinders the growth of AI-led data analysis. Conclusions: When considering the potential of artificial intelligence, its ability to enhance patient care from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective shows signs of promise. For the true utilization of artificial intelligence, some roadblocks must be addressed. The datasets available to AI may not truly reflect the real-world, which would prevent its impact in all clinical scenarios when dealing with a spectrum of patients with different backgrounds and presenting factors. Considering this, the shift in medical diagnostics and therapeutics is coinciding with evolving technology. The paper studies the effectiveness of machine learning techniques in predicting the microhardness of composite materials manufactured from a mixture of iron-copper (Fe-Cu) nanopowders and hydroxyapatite (HA) particles. It is shown that the different proportion of Fe-Cu and HA powders and the polymer fraction in the composite significantly affect its hardness. A surrogate model based on the artificial neural network (ANN) and the analytical model, is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the microhardness, depending on the powder/polymer ratio. The ANN models show the probability distribution of indentation values after microhardness testing, which is the input data for the analytical model to compute the hardness. Interpreting a seemingly simple function word like "or," "behind," or "more" can require logical, numerical, and relational reasoning. How are such words learned by children? Prior acquisition theories have often relied on positing a foundation of innate knowledge. Yet recent neural‐network‐based visual question answering models apparently can learn to use function words as part of answering questions about complex visual scenes. In this paper, we study what these models learn about function words, in the hope of better understanding how the meanings of these words can be learned by both models and children. We show that recurrent models trained on visually grounded language learn gradient semantics for function words requiring spatial and numerical reasoning. Furthermore, we find that these models can learn the meanings of logical connectives and and or without any prior knowledge of logical reasoning as well as early evidence that they are sensitive to alternative expressions when interpreting language. Finally, we show that word learning difficulty is dependent on the frequency of models' input. Our findings offer proof‐of‐concept evidence that it is possible to learn the nuanced interpretations of function words in a visually grounded context by using non‐symbolic general statistical learning algorithms, without any prior knowledge of linguistic meaning. Predicting the moment-rotation response parameters of semirigid steel connections can be challenging given the many components contributing to the connection's elastic and plastic deformations. This is the case for the popular flush endplate beam-to-column connections (FEPCs). The literature has highlighted the limitations of current analytical, mechanical, and traditional empirical models in providing accurate predictions of the FEPCs' moment-rotation response. Considering this limitation, machine-learning methods have gained wide attention recently in structural engineering applications to address problems associated with complex structural deformation and damage phenomena. To that end, the superior nonlinearity of artificial neural networks (ANN) is employed herein to predict the response characteristics of FEPCs. A large data set of about 200 specimens, collected from past experimental programs, is utilized to train the ANN for predicting the bilinear response of FEPCs including strain hardening. The paper describes the deduction of the response parameters from test data using data fitting, the determination of significant geometric, material, and layout features, the ANN architecture and algorithms, and the accuracy metrics of the new model. The Shapley algorithm is used to explain the inner workings of the model. Deformable linear objects (DLOs), such as rods, cables, and ropes, play important roles in daily life. However, manipulation of DLOs is challenging as large geometrically nonlinear deformations may occur during the manipulation process. This problem is made even more difficult as the different deformation modes (e.g., stretching, bending, and twisting) may result in elastic instabilities during manipulation. In this paper, we formulate a physics-guided data-driven method to solve a challenging manipulation task—accurately deploying a DLO (an elastic rod) onto a rigid substrate along various prescribed patterns. Our framework combines machine learning, scaling analysis, and physical simulations to develop a physics-based neural controller for deployment. We explore the complex interplay between the gravitational and elastic energies of the manipulated DLO and obtain a control method for DLO deployment that is robust against friction and material properties. Out of the numerous geometrical and material properties of the rod and substrate, we show that only three non-dimensional parameters are needed to describe the deployment process with physical analysis. Therefore, the essence of the controlling law for the manipulation task can be constructed with a low-dimensional model, drastically increasing the computation speed. The effectiveness of our optimal control scheme is shown through a comprehensive robotic case study comparing against a heuristic control method for deploying rods for a wide variety of patterns. In addition to this, we also showcase the practicality of our control scheme by having a robot accomplish challenging high-level tasks such as mimicking human handwriting, cable placement, and tying knots. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Intelligent compaction (IC) has emerged as a breakthrough technology that utilizes advanced sensing, data transmission, and control systems to optimize asphalt pavement compaction quality and efficiency. However, accurate assessment of compaction status remains challenging under real construction conditions. This paper reviewed recent progress and applications of smart sensors and machine learning (ML) to address existing limitations in IC. The principles and components of various advanced sensors deployed in IC systems were introduced, including SmartRock, fiber Bragg grating, and integrated circuit piezoelectric acceleration sensors. Case studies on utilizing these sensors for particle behavior monitoring, strain measurement, and impact data collection were reviewed. Meanwhile, common ML algorithms including regression, classification, clustering, and artificial neural networks were discussed. Practical examples of applying ML to estimate mechanical properties, evaluate overall compaction quality, and predict soil firmness through supervised and unsupervised models were examined. Results indicated smart sensors have enhanced compaction monitoring capabilities but require robustness improvements. ML provides a data-driven approach to complement traditional empirical methods but necessitates extensive field validation. Potential integration with digital construction technologies such as building information modeling and augmented reality was also explored. In conclusion, leveraging emerging sensing and artificial intelligence presents opportunities to optimize the IC process and address key challenges. However, cooperation across disciplines will be vital to test and refine technologies under real-world conditions. The Π -shaped open section girder is a very common section, which has been widely used in the construction of modern bridges. However, compared with a streamlined box girder, it is easy to cause vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in bridges due to its bluff section shape and poor aerodynamic stability. In this paper, a typical open section with a height–width ratio of 10:1 is taken as the research object. Through wind tunnel tests and numerical simulation technology, the time-history data of VIV of the Π -shaped section are obtained. By selecting three different neural network models to establish the relationship between external parameters (wind attack angle, wind speed, turbulence) and structural response parameters (the onset wind speed of VIV, the length of the lock-in interval). After comparing different machine learning methods, the most suitable machine learning model is selected to predict the VIV response characteristics of the main girder. The research results show that the typical open section has a serious VIV phenomenon. The BP neural network model has the best performance in predicting the VIV performance of the open section in terms of calculation speed, prediction accuracy and solving nonlinear adaptability. At the same time, it is found that different characteristic parameters of the incoming wind field have different influences on the prediction results of the VIV response. Among them, the wind attack angle is the key parameter that affects the onset wind speed of VIV, but the turbulence intensity has a greater impact on the maximum amplitude of VIV. At the same time, the optimized BP model can predict the characteristic parameters of VIV response under unknown wind fields. This paper provides a new idea to study the effect of different incoming flow parameters on the performance of section VIV and further improves people's understanding of VIV system.
