As semiconductor performance improves through advanced package designs, it becomes important to consider both thermal and mechanical properties. Better understanding their relationship enhances system design and optimization. This study has introduced a numerical method that takes into account both thermal and mechanical fluxes to construct thermal and mechanical property maps for practical application in semiconductor engineering. Furthermore, this paper investigated the relationship between the two properties using the constructed property maps in commercially available semiconductor packages. Owing to the complexity of packaging design patterns, a coupled isoparametric mapping and machine learning (ML) method was introduced to investigate their effects. The model then determines and investigates the anisotropic equivalent thermal and mechanical properties of the commercialized semiconductor packages with complex pattern designs, according to the package materials, volume fractions of each material, and design patterns. This approach pursues more sophistication and practicality compared to simplified composite structure property evaluation models. Additionally, all processes in the algorithm are automated based on ML methods, making them practically applicable in the semiconductor industry. The study shows that there is a strong correlation between the thermal and mechanical characteristics in the complex package patterns. This relationship was able to form a fairly clear category based on the shape of the dielectric band because the dielectric band had significantly different effects on the thermal and mechanical fluxes. The study discussed the physical implications of the similarities and differences between the two behaviors and validated the results of the equivalent properties through finite element (FE) analysis. Finally, the study cross-validates the relationship by showing that information from one flux behavior can be used to predict the other based on the ML method. Giga-casting, a revolutionary approach for manufacturing large, single-piece car body components from aluminium, has emerged as a potential game-changer in the automotive industry. However, these large, thin-walled castings are prone to distortions during solidification and heat treatment processes. Straightening these distortions is crucial to ensure structural integrity, facilitate downstream assembly, and maintain aesthetic qualities. This paper proposes a novel method for straightening giga-cast components using a multi-pin straightening machine. The machine's versatility stems from its ability to adapt to various geometries through multiple strategically controlled straightening pins. This paper introduces the concept of a "straightening stroke decision algorithm" to achieve precise straightening and overcome the challenges of complex shapes. This algorithm determines the stroke length for each pin, combining a polynomial model representing the global stiffness of the component with a machine learning model that captures the stiffness changes arising from the current geometry. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated through comprehensive numerical experiments using finite element analyses. The straightening performance is assessed for the straightening algorithm with different machine learning models (deep neural network and XGBoost) and compared to a traditional optimisation method. The proposed surrogate models decided the straightening strokes so that the maximum remaining distortion became 0.02% of the largest dimension of each target geometry. Pattern recognition systems always misclassify anomalies, which can be dangerous for uninformed users. Therefore, anomalies must be filtered out from each classification. The main challenge for the anomaly filter design is the huge number of possible anomaly samples compared with the number of samples in the training set. Tailoring the filter for the given classifier is just the first step in this reduction. Paper tests the hypothesis that the filter trained in avoiding "near" anomalies will also refuse the "far" anomalies, and the anomaly detector is then just a classifier distinguishing between "far real" and "near anomaly" samples. As a "far real" samples generator was used, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) fake generator that transforms normally distributed random seeds into fakes similar to the training samples. The paper proves the assumption that seeds unused in fake training will generate anomalies. These seeds are distinguished according to their Chebyshev norms. While the fakes have seeds within the hypersphere with a given radius, the near anomalies have seeds within the sphere near cover. Experiments with various anomaly test sets have shown that GAN-based anomaly detectors create a reliable anti-anomaly shield using the abovementioned assumptions. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. Recent research has revealed that subtle imperceptible perturbations can deceive well-trained neural network models, leading to inaccurate outcomes. These instances, known as adversarial examples, pose significant threats to the secure application of machine learning techniques in safety-critical systems. In this paper, we delve into the study of one-pixel attacks in deep neural networks, recently reported as a kind of adversarial examples. To identify such one-pixel attacks, most existing methodologies rely on the differential evolution method, which utilizes random selection from the current population to escape local optima. However, the differential evolution technique might waste search time and overlook good solutions if the number of iterations is insufficient. Hence, in this paper, we propose a gradient ascent with momentum approach to efficiently discover good solutions for the one-pixel attack problem. As our method takes a more direct route to the goal compared to existing methods relying on blind random walks, it can effectively identify one-pixel attacks. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. The use of explosives to target civilian buildings and other structures around the world is becoming a growing problem in modern societies. This paper focuses on RC beams exposed to free air blast loads. The paper first presents a parametric study on the behavior of RC beams subjected to blast loads using finite element simulation and then proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to predict that behavior in a simple and easy manner. The ABAQUS program is used to simulate RC beams under blast loads. Experimental data was collected from the literature and used to validate the ABAQUS models. Deflection, reaction forces, ultimate stress, ultimate strain, and failure mode of RC beams are investigated. The considered design parameters in the parametric study are the characteristic compressive strength of concrete (fcu), the transverse reinforcement ratio (ρT%), the longitudinal reinforcement ratio (ρL%), and the scaled distance (Z). In this paper, the proposed ANN model was trained and tested using datasets produced using ABAQUS. The input parameters of the ANN model are TNT weight, standoff distance (D), characteristic compressive strength of concrete, transverse reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, width-to-thickness ratio (b/t), and length-to-thickness ratio (L/t). The predicted behavior using the ANN model showed the credibility of the model. The results indicated that L/t, b/t, and Z have significant effects on the behavior of RC beams under blast loads compared with fcu, ρT%, and ρL%, the cracks area increases with the decrease in Z, fcu, and b/t and decreases with L/t decrease. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. Retail demand forecasting is a highly intricate and multilevel problem as it may include numerous products, under multiple categories, and potentially sold in many different stores. Forecasts may also process products in isolation or collectively so as to detect mutual correlations. In technical terms, retail demand forecasting may be broken down to a multivariate time series forecasting problem where the time axis is prevalent and introduces added complexity which necessitates proper usage of advanced methodologies with machine/deep learning backgrounds. Popular boosting regressors, such as XGBoost and LightGBM, are excellent machine learning candidates with extensive bibliographic backgrounds covering multiple scientific fields and applications including generic multivariate time series forecasts. The Temporal Convolutional Network and the Temporal Fusion Transformer are recently proposed deep neural network architectures that found success in specific multivariate scenarios but are yet to be tested in a variety of related fields such as retail demand forecasting. Therefore, within this paper, these novel in-the-field models are compared to the aforementioned boosting approaches alongside popular statistical univariate methods, namely Exponential Smoothing and SARIMA. To properly compare the selected models and attempt to generalize their usability, two separate datasets are analyzed and forecasted; an item sales dataset with 500 time series and a category sales dataset with 540 time series. The findings suggest that the deep learning solutions are the better predictors, with the Transformer model surpassing the Boosting solutions by up to 16.8% sMAPE decrease and the statistical approaches by up to 28.6% decrease, further substantiating the notion that deep learning techniques are exceptionally promising in handling large-scale, non-linear and outlier data whilst suggesting that retail demand forecasting does benefit from multivariate approaches and the application of advanced machine learning methods. A variant of membrane computing models called Spiking Neural P systems (SNP systems) closely mimics the structure and behavior of biological neurons. As third-generation neural networks, SNP systems have flexible architectures allowing the design of bio-inspired machine learning algorithms. This paper proposes Modular Spiking Neural P (MSNP) systems to solve image classification problems, a novel SNP system to be applied in scenarios where hundreds or even thousands of different classes are considered. A main issue to face in such situations is related to the structural complexity of the network. MSNP systems devised in this work allow to approach the general classification problem by dividing it in smaller parts, that are then faced by single entities of the network. As a benchmark dataset, the Oxford Flowers 102 dataset is considered, consisting of more than 8000 pictures of flowers belonging to the 102 species commonly found in the UK. These classes sometimes present large variations within them, may be also very similar to one another, and different images of the same subject may differ a lot. The work describes the architecture of the MSNP system, based on modules focusing on a specific class, their training phase, and the evaluation of the model both concerning result accuracy as well as energy consumption. Experimental results on image classification problems show that the model achieves good results, but is strongly connected to image quality, mainly depending on the frequency of images, remarkable changes of pose, images not centered, and subject mostly not shown. Using multiple input power sources increases the reliability of electric vehicles compared to a single source. However, the inclusion of other sources exhibits complexity in the controller system, such as computing time, program difficulty, and switching speed to connect or disconnect the input power to load. To ensure optimal performance and avoid overloading issues, the EV system needs sophisticated control. This work introduces a machine-learning-based controller using an artificial neural network to solve these problems. This paper describes the detailed power management control methodology using multiple sources like solar PV, fuel cells, and batteries. Novel control with an instantaneous reference current scheme is used to manage the input power sources to satisfy the power demand of electric vehicles. The proposed work executes the power split-up operation with standard and actual drive cycles and maximum power point tracking for PV panels using MATLAB Simulink. Finally, power management with a machine learning technique is implemented in an experimental analysis with the LabVIEW software, and an FPGA controller is used to control a 48 V, 1 kW permanent-magnet synchronous machine. In order to improve the reliability and life of the wind turbine, this paper takes the rolling bearing in the experimental platform of the wind turbine as the research object. In order to obtain the intrinsic mode function (IMF) of each fault type, the original signals of different fault states of the rolling bearing on the experimental platform are decomposed by using the overall average empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD) and the wavelet packet decomposition method (WPD), respectively. Then the energy ratio of the IMF component of the different types of faults to the total energy value is calculated and the eigenvectors of different types of faults are constructed. The extreme learning machine (ELM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) are used to learn fault types and eigenvector samples to identify the faults of the rolling bearing. It is found that the bearing fault characteristics obtained by the WPD method are more obvious, and the results obtained by the same recognition method are ideal; and the PNN method is obviously superior to the extreme learning machine method in bearing fault recognition rate. This paper presents the results of a study on data preprocessing and modeling for predicting corrosion in water pipelines of a steel industrial plant. The use case is a cooling circuit consisting of both direct and indirect cooling. In the direct cooling circuit, water comes into direct contact with the product, whereas in the indirect one, it does not. In this study, advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting and deep neural networks, have been employed for two distinct applications. Firstly, a virtual sensor was created to estimate the corrosion rate based on influencing process variables, such as pH and temperature. Secondly, a predictive tool was designed to foresee the future evolution of the corrosion rate, considering past values of both influencing variables and the corrosion rate. The results show that the most suitable algorithm for the virtual sensor approach is the dense neural network, with MAPE values of (25 ± 4)% and (11 ± 4)% for the direct and indirect circuits, respectively. In contrast, different results are obtained for the two circuits when following the predictive tool approach. For the primary circuit, the convolutional neural network yields the best results, with MAPE = 4% on the testing set, whereas for the secondary circuit, the LSTM recurrent network shows the highest prediction accuracy, with MAPE = 9%. In general, models employing temporal windows have emerged as more suitable for corrosion prediction, with model performance significantly improving with a larger dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an analysis and prediction of the shear strength of wide-shallow reinforced concrete beams, utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and machine learning techniques. The methodology involves validating a detailed Finite Element Model (FEM) against experimental results, conducting a parametric study, and developing three Machine Learning prediction equations. The FEM captures concrete and steel behaviors, including cracking and crushing for concrete and linear isotropic properties for steel reinforcement. Loading and boundary conditions are defined for accuracy and validated against 13 experimental specimens, exhibiting a maximum 8% and 12% difference in loads and deflections, respectively. A parametric study generates a dataset of 77 wide beam configurations, exploring variations in beam widths, concrete strengths, compression rebars, and shear reinforcement. This dataset is used to develop machine learning models, including "Genetic Programming (GP)", "Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR)", and "Artificial Neural Network (ANN)". Comparative analysis reveals GP and EPR models with over 95% correlation, while the ANN model outperforms with 99% accuracy. Sensitivity analysis underscores the significant influence of concrete strength and beam aspect ratio on shear strength. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the potential of FEA and machine learning models to predict shear strength in wide-shallow reinforced concrete beams, providing valuable insights for architectural design and engineering practices and emphasizing the role of concrete strength and beam geometry in shear behavior. By identifying the challenges inherent in UC diagnosis, we seek to highlight the potential impact of artificial intelligence on enhancing both diagnosis and treatment methodologies for this condition. Method: A targeted, non-systematic review of literature relating to ulcerative colitis was undertaken. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to categorize a well-rounded understanding of the field of artificial intelligence and its developing role in the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Articles that were thought to be relevant were included. This paper only included articles published in English. Results: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer algorithms capable of learning, problem solving and decision-making. Throughout our review, we highlighted the role and importance of artificial intelligence in modern medicine, emphasizing its role in diagnosis through AI-assisted endoscopies and histology analysis and its enhancements in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Despite these advances, AI is still hindered due to its current lack of adaptability to real-world scenarios and its difficulty in widespread data availability, which hinders the growth of AI-led data analysis. Conclusions: When considering the potential of artificial intelligence, its ability to enhance patient care from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective shows signs of promise. For the true utilization of artificial intelligence, some roadblocks must be addressed. The datasets available to AI may not truly reflect the real-world, which would prevent its impact in all clinical scenarios when dealing with a spectrum of patients with different backgrounds and presenting factors. Considering this, the shift in medical diagnostics and therapeutics is coinciding with evolving technology. This paper aims to explore machine learning techniques for post‐processing high‐resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) products for the early detection of convection. Data from the Arome Ensemble Prediction System and satellite observations from the Rapidly Developing Thunderstorm (RDT) product by Météo‐France are used to train a recurrent neural network model to predict areas of total convection and moderate convection. The learning task is formulated as a binary classification problem using a long short‐term memory (LSTM) network architecture. Results from the LSTM model are compared with an object‐based probabilistic approach to forecast convection using metrics such as a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, the Brier score and reliability. Results indicate that the LSTM model performs similarly to the object‐based probabilistic benchmark when classifying moderate convection areas and shows improved skill when classifying areas of total convective. Finally, the LSTM model results are presented within an air traffic management context to showcase the potential use of machine learning models within an operational application. Interpreting a seemingly simple function word like "or," "behind," or "more" can require logical, numerical, and relational reasoning. How are such words learned by children? Prior acquisition theories have often relied on positing a foundation of innate knowledge. Yet recent neural‐network‐based visual question answering models apparently can learn to use function words as part of answering questions about complex visual scenes. In this paper, we study what these models learn about function words, in the hope of better understanding how the meanings of these words can be learned by both models and children. We show that recurrent models trained on visually grounded language learn gradient semantics for function words requiring spatial and numerical reasoning. Furthermore, we find that these models can learn the meanings of logical connectives and and or without any prior knowledge of logical reasoning as well as early evidence that they are sensitive to alternative expressions when interpreting language. Finally, we show that word learning difficulty is dependent on the frequency of models' input. Our findings offer proof‐of‐concept evidence that it is possible to learn the nuanced interpretations of function words in a visually grounded context by using non‐symbolic general statistical learning algorithms, without any prior knowledge of linguistic meaning. Predicting the moment-rotation response parameters of semirigid steel connections can be challenging given the many components contributing to the connection's elastic and plastic deformations. This is the case for the popular flush endplate beam-to-column connections (FEPCs). The literature has highlighted the limitations of current analytical, mechanical, and traditional empirical models in providing accurate predictions of the FEPCs' moment-rotation response. Considering this limitation, machine-learning methods have gained wide attention recently in structural engineering applications to address problems associated with complex structural deformation and damage phenomena. To that end, the superior nonlinearity of artificial neural networks (ANN) is employed herein to predict the response characteristics of FEPCs. A large data set of about 200 specimens, collected from past experimental programs, is utilized to train the ANN for predicting the bilinear response of FEPCs including strain hardening. The paper describes the deduction of the response parameters from test data using data fitting, the determination of significant geometric, material, and layout features, the ANN architecture and algorithms, and the accuracy metrics of the new model. The Shapley algorithm is used to explain the inner workings of the model. Deformable linear objects (DLOs), such as rods, cables, and ropes, play important roles in daily life. However, manipulation of DLOs is challenging as large geometrically nonlinear deformations may occur during the manipulation process. This problem is made even more difficult as the different deformation modes (e.g., stretching, bending, and twisting) may result in elastic instabilities during manipulation. In this paper, we formulate a physics-guided data-driven method to solve a challenging manipulation task—accurately deploying a DLO (an elastic rod) onto a rigid substrate along various prescribed patterns. Our framework combines machine learning, scaling analysis, and physical simulations to develop a physics-based neural controller for deployment. We explore the complex interplay between the gravitational and elastic energies of the manipulated DLO and obtain a control method for DLO deployment that is robust against friction and material properties. Out of the numerous geometrical and material properties of the rod and substrate, we show that only three non-dimensional parameters are needed to describe the deployment process with physical analysis. Therefore, the essence of the controlling law for the manipulation task can be constructed with a low-dimensional model, drastically increasing the computation speed. The effectiveness of our optimal control scheme is shown through a comprehensive robotic case study comparing against a heuristic control method for deploying rods for a wide variety of patterns. In addition to this, we also showcase the practicality of our control scheme by having a robot accomplish challenging high-level tasks such as mimicking human handwriting, cable placement, and tying knots. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Intelligent compaction (IC) has emerged as a breakthrough technology that utilizes advanced sensing, data transmission, and control systems to optimize asphalt pavement compaction quality and efficiency. However, accurate assessment of compaction status remains challenging under real construction conditions. This paper reviewed recent progress and applications of smart sensors and machine learning (ML) to address existing limitations in IC. The principles and components of various advanced sensors deployed in IC systems were introduced, including SmartRock, fiber Bragg grating, and integrated circuit piezoelectric acceleration sensors. Case studies on utilizing these sensors for particle behavior monitoring, strain measurement, and impact data collection were reviewed. Meanwhile, common ML algorithms including regression, classification, clustering, and artificial neural networks were discussed. Practical examples of applying ML to estimate mechanical properties, evaluate overall compaction quality, and predict soil firmness through supervised and unsupervised models were examined. Results indicated smart sensors have enhanced compaction monitoring capabilities but require robustness improvements. ML provides a data-driven approach to complement traditional empirical methods but necessitates extensive field validation. Potential integration with digital construction technologies such as building information modeling and augmented reality was also explored. In conclusion, leveraging emerging sensing and artificial intelligence presents opportunities to optimize the IC process and address key challenges. However, cooperation across disciplines will be vital to test and refine technologies under real-world conditions. The Π -shaped open section girder is a very common section, which has been widely used in the construction of modern bridges. However, compared with a streamlined box girder, it is easy to cause vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in bridges due to its bluff section shape and poor aerodynamic stability. In this paper, a typical open section with a height–width ratio of 10:1 is taken as the research object. Through wind tunnel tests and numerical simulation technology, the time-history data of VIV of the Π -shaped section are obtained. By selecting three different neural network models to establish the relationship between external parameters (wind attack angle, wind speed, turbulence) and structural response parameters (the onset wind speed of VIV, the length of the lock-in interval). After comparing different machine learning methods, the most suitable machine learning model is selected to predict the VIV response characteristics of the main girder. The research results show that the typical open section has a serious VIV phenomenon. The BP neural network model has the best performance in predicting the VIV performance of the open section in terms of calculation speed, prediction accuracy and solving nonlinear adaptability. At the same time, it is found that different characteristic parameters of the incoming wind field have different influences on the prediction results of the VIV response. Among them, the wind attack angle is the key parameter that affects the onset wind speed of VIV, but the turbulence intensity has a greater impact on the maximum amplitude of VIV. At the same time, the optimized BP model can predict the characteristic parameters of VIV response under unknown wind fields. This paper provides a new idea to study the effect of different incoming flow parameters on the performance of section VIV and further improves people's understanding of VIV system. Drying processes are among the most energy-intensive industrial processes. There is a need for development of the efficient methods needed for estimating, measuring, and reducing energy use. Different machine learning algorithms might provide some of the answers to these issues in a faster and less costly way, without the need for time-consuming and expensive experiments done at different scales of the dryers. The aim of this paper was to provide a comprehensive overview of machine learning applications for addressing energy-related challenges by exploration of different energy types and energy reduction opportunities. Also, the analysis of the applied algorithms, their specific applications and a critical evaluation of the obtained results are provided. The paper is based on the necessity of the improvements in energy use needed for drying related on the existing data. The overview of the ways for such achievements, and a general classification of machine learning algorithm are the background of the paper. The methods used are the machine learning techniques employed in different energy-related issues for drying processes. The paper focuses on the applications of artificial neural networks and other machine learning algorithms and models for different energy-related issues, including different energy types applications, challenges associated with energy consumption, and opportunities for energy reduction. Not only the applied algorithms, but also their specific applications, and the statistical analysis of the obtained results are also overviewed. Finally, a critical evaluation of the findings highlighting the potentials of machine learning algorithms in addressing energy-related challenges (such as estimation of energy consumption, opportunities for energy reduction, and use of different energy sources) is provided. Stagnation at local optima represents a significant challenge in bio-inspired optimization algorithms, often leading to suboptimal solutions. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a hybrid model that combines the Orca predator algorithm with deep Q-learning. The Orca predator algorithm is an optimization technique that mimics the hunting behavior of orcas. It solves complex optimization problems by exploring and exploiting search spaces efficiently. Deep Q-learning is a reinforcement learning technique that combines Q-learning with deep neural networks. This integration aims to turn the stagnation problem into an opportunity for more focused and effective exploitation, enhancing the optimization technique's performance and accuracy. The proposed hybrid model leverages the biomimetic strengths of the Orca predator algorithm to identify promising regions nearby in the search space, complemented by the fine-tuning capabilities of deep Q-learning to navigate these areas precisely. The practical application of this approach is evaluated using the high-dimensional Heartbeat Categorization Dataset, focusing on the feature selection problem. This dataset, comprising complex electrocardiogram signals, provided a robust platform for testing the feature selection capabilities of our hybrid model. Our experimental results are encouraging, showcasing the hybrid strategy's capability to identify relevant features without significantly compromising the performance metrics of machine learning models. In this paper we present a method that allows leveraging 3D electron density information to train a deep neural network pipeline to segment regions of high, medium and low electronegativity and classify substances as health hazardous or non-hazardous. We show that this can be used for use-cases such as cosmetics and food products. For this purpose, we first generate 3D electron density cubes using semiempirical molecular calculations for a custom European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) subset consisting of substances labelled as hazardous and non-hazardous for cosmetic usage. Together with their 3-class electronegativity maps we train a modified 3D-UNet with electron density cubes to segment reactive sites in molecules and classify substances with an accuracy of 78.1%. We perform the same process on a custom food dataset (CompFood) consisting of hazardous and non-hazardous substances compiled from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) OpenFoodTox, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and FooDB datasets to achieve a classification accuracy of 64.1%. Our results show that 3D electron densities and particularly masked electron densities, calculated by taking a product of original electron densities and regions of high and low electronegativity can be used to classify molecules for different use-cases and thus serve not only to guide safe-by-design product development but also aid in regulatory decisions. Scientific contribution: We aim to contribute to the diverse 3D molecular representations used for training machine learning algorithms by showing that a deep learning network can be trained on 3D electron density representation of molecules. This approach has previously not been used to train machine learning models and it allows utilization of the true spatial domain of the molecule for prediction of properties such as their suitability for usage in cosmetics and food products and in future, to other molecular properties. This study aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities for optimising the performance of the anaerobic sewage treatment lagoon at Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant (WTP) through a novel machine learning (ML)-based monitoring strategy. This strategy employs ML to make accurate probabilistic predictions of biogas performance by leveraging diverse real-life operational and inspection sensor and other measurement data for asset management, decision making, and structural health monitoring (SHM). The paper commences with data analysis and preprocessing of complex irregular datasets to facilitate efficient learning in an artificial neural network. Subsequently, a Bayesian mixture density neural network model incorporating an attention-based mechanism in bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) was developed. This probabilistic approach uses a distribution output layer based on the Gaussian mixture model and Monte Carlo (MC) dropout technique in estimating data and model uncertainties, respectively. Furthermore, systematic hyperparameter optimisation revealed that the optimised model achieved a negative log-likelihood (NLL) of 0.074, significantly outperforming other configurations. It achieved an accuracy approximately 9 times greater than the average model performance (NLL = 0.753) and 22 times greater than the worst performing model (NLL = 1.677). Key factors influencing the model's accuracy, such as the input window size and the number of hidden units in the BiLSTM layer, were identified, while the number of neurons in the fully connected layer was found to have no significant impact on accuracy. Moreover, model calibration using the expected calibration error was performed to correct the model's predictive uncertainty. The findings suggest that the inherent data significantly contribute to the overall uncertainty of the model, highlighting the need for more high-quality data to enhance learning. The use of drones has recently gained popularity in a diverse range of applications, such as aerial photography, agriculture, search and rescue operations, the entertainment industry, and more. However, misuse of drone technology can potentially lead to military threats, terrorist acts, as well as privacy and safety breaches. This emphasizes the need for effective and fast remote detection of potentially threatening drones. In this study, we propose a novel approach for automatic drone detection utilizing the usage of both radio frequency communication signals and acoustic signals derived from UAV rotor sounds. In particular, we propose the use of classical and deep machine-learning techniques and the fusion of RF and acoustic features for efficient and accurate drone classification. Distinct types of ML-based classifiers have been examined, including CNN- and RNN-based networks and the classical SVM method. The proposed approach has been evaluated with both frequency and audio features using common drone datasets, demonstrating better accuracy than existing state-of-the-art methods, especially in low SNR scenarios. To achieve successful prevention of fire incidents originating from human activities, it is imperative to possess a thorough understanding. This paper introduces a machine learning approach, specifically utilizing deep neural networks (DNN), to develop predictive models for fire occurrence in Keelung City, Taiwan. It investigates ten factors across demographic, architectural, and economic domains through spatial analysis and thematic maps generated from geographic information system data. These factors are then integrated as inputs for the DNN model. Through 50 iterations, performance indices including the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), variance accounted for (VAF), prediction interval (PI), mean absolute error (MAE), weighted index (WI), weighted mean absolute percentage error (WMAPE), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), and the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) are computed, with average values of 0.89, 7.30 × 10−2, 89.21, 1.63, 4.90 × 10−2, 0.97, 2.92 × 10−1, 0.88, and 4.84, respectively. The model's predictions, compared with historical data, demonstrate its efficacy. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have gained prominence in various applications, but remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks that manipulate data to mislead a DNN. This paper aims to challenge the efficacy and transferability of two contemporary defense mechanisms against adversarial attacks: (a) robust training and (b) adversarial training. The former suggests that training a DNN on a data set consisting solely of robust features should produce a model resistant to adversarial attacks. The latter creates an adversarially trained model that learns to minimise an expected training loss over a distribution of bounded adversarial perturbations. We reveal a significant lack in the transferability of these defense mechanisms and provide insight into the potential dangers posed by L ∞ -norm attacks previously underestimated by the research community. This present review explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods in analysing the prediction of thermophysical properties of nanofluids. Nanofluids, colloidal solutions comprising nanoparticles dispersed in various base fluids, have received significant attention for their enhanced thermal properties and broad application in industries ranging from electronics cooling to renewable energy systems. In particular, nanofluids' complexity and non-linear behaviour necessitate advanced predictive models in heat transfer applications. The AI techniques, which include genetic algorithms (GAs) and machine learning (ML) methods, have emerged as powerful tools to address these challenges and offer novel alternatives to traditional mathematical and physical models. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and other AI algorithms are highlighted for their capacity to process large datasets and identify intricate patterns, thereby proving effective in predicting nanofluid thermophysical properties (e.g., thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity). This review paper presents a comprehensive overview of various published studies devoted to the thermal behaviour of nanofluids, where AI methods (like ANNs, support vector regression (SVR), and genetic algorithms) are employed to enhance the accuracy of predictions of their thermophysical properties. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in predictive analytics is growing in popularity. It has the power to offer ground-breaking solutions for a range of social problems and real world societal difficulties. It is helpful in addressing some of the social issues that today's world seems incapable of solving. One of the most significant phenomena affecting people's lives is divorce. The goal of this paper is to study the use of machine learning algorithms to determine the effectiveness of divorce predictor scale (DPS) and identify the reasons that usually lead to divorce in the scenario of Hail region, KSA. For this purpose, in this study, the DPS, based on Gottman couples therapy, was used to predict divorce by applying different machine learning algorithms. There were 54 items of the DPS used as features or attributes for data collection. In addition to the DPS, a personal information form was utilized to gather participants' personal data in order to conduct this study in a more structured and traditional manner. Out of 148 participants 116 participants were married whereas 32 were divorced. With the use of algorithms artificial neural network (ANN), naïve bayes (NB), and random forest (RF), the effectiveness of DPS was examined in this study. The correlation based feature selection method was used to identify the top six features from the same dataset and the highest accuracy rate was 91.66% with RF. The results show that DPS can predict divorce. This scale can help family counselors and therapists in case formulation and intervention plan development process. Variable selection is one of the most important contents of machine learning research and a large number of variable selection methods have been proposed at present. From deep learning perspective, we propose a new variable selection method based on multi-layer artificial neural networks in this paper. The method propagates errors gained form a trained network model through the network from output layer to input layer and the values gained by input layer give information about the relative contribution. The variables with big contribution value are selected, which we call neural inverse propagation (NIP). Specifically, after training a neural network, the gained errors between the actual network outputs and the desired outputs go through the network from top to down and arrive at the input layer. The absolute values gained by input units provide information about the relative importance (contribution) of input units, which is that the larger the value is, the more important the corresponding input variable is. We remove k variables corresponding to the first k minimum absolute value gained by input units to the predictive variables, to perform variable selection. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated through its application to classification and regression tasks on a number of synthetic datasets and a real-world image classification dataset. Sound source localization is a technique that utilizes microphone arrays to detect the position of sound sources. It has a wide range of applications in areas such as smart homes, robot navigation, and conference recording. However, due to the complexity of the acoustic environment and the impact of noise interference, the accuracy of localization algorithms has always been a core concern in this field. Traditional time difference of arrival (TDOA) techniques struggle to achieve high precision and efficiency in localization results. To address this issue, this paper proposes a microphone array sound source localization method based on incremental broad learning (Enhance) algorithm. This method extracts shallow and deep features from audio signals and maps them to feature nodes and enhancement nodes in the broad learning system (BLS); a neural network model is constructed, which allows for fast adjustment of network structure and parameters. The model employs ridge regression to calculate connection weights and utilizes enhancement nodes to modify and optimize the feature nodes, thus achieving accurate prediction of sound source locations. The proposed method is experimentally validated using the NOIZEUS dataset and compared with the single-structure broad learning (One-shot) algorithm, back-propagation neural network (BP) algorithm, and recurrent neural network (RNN) algorithm. In the experiments, a microphone array consisting of four microphones is used, with a room size of 5 m × 4 m × 3 m. Different reverberation times (T60) and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are employed to simulate various acoustic environments, and the performance of the four algorithms is evaluated in terms of outlier percentage and mean-squared error (MSE). The results demonstrate that under high reverberation (T60 = 700 ms) and low SNR (SNR = 0 dB) conditions, the proposed method achieves outlier percentage of only 0.308% and MSE of 0.92°. Compared to the other three algorithms, Enhance algorithm exhibits superior localization accuracy, noise robustness, and stability, thus holding significant research and practical value. The die shear test is a feasible and conventional method to characterize the shear strength of die‐attaching layer materials in electronic packaging. A new method for determining cohesive zone model (CZM) parameters using deep neural networks (DNN) and die shear tests is proposed, different from classical fracture framework or lap shear test‐based methods. With the sintered nano‐silver die shear test, the results show that the bilinear CZM inversion results agree well with the experimental results. It is found that the DNN model has high accuracy in predicting and identifying the maximum shear traction strength τmax, separation displacement of the interface δf, and the interface stiffness k1 of CZM parameters for sintered nano‐silver adhesive layer through die shear test load versus displacement curves. The presented DNN‐aided inverse identifying method through the die shear test in this paper could provide an alternative and convenient method for extracting CZM parameters of various kinds of adhesive materials in electronic packaging. The Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol stands out as one of the foremost and widely recognized messaging protocols in the field. It is often used to transfer and manage data between devices and is extensively employed for applications ranging from smart homes and industrial automation to healthcare and transportation systems. However, it lacks built-in security features, thereby making it vulnerable to many types of attacks such as man-in-the-middle (MitM), buffer overflow, pre-shared key, brute force authentication, malformed data, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and MQTT publish flood attacks. Traditional methods for detecting MQTT attacks, such as deep neural networks (DNNs), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and fuzzy logic, may exist. The increasing prevalence of device connectivity, sensor usage, and environmental scalability become the most challenging aspects that novel detection approaches need to address. This paper presents a new solution that leverages an H2O-based distributed machine learning (ML) framework to improve the security of the MQTT protocol in networks, particularly in IoT environments. The proposed approach leverages the strengths of the H2O algorithm and architecture to enable real-time monitoring and distributed detection and classification of anomalous behavior (deviations from expected activity patterns). By harnessing H2O's algorithms, the identification and timely mitigation of potential security threats are achieved. Various H2O algorithms, including random forests, generalized linear models (GLMs), gradient boosting machine (GBM), XGBoost, and the deep learning (DL) algorithm, have been assessed to determine the most reliable algorithm in terms of detection performance. This study encompasses the development of the proposed algorithm, including implementation details and evaluation results. To assess the proposed model, various evaluation metrics such as mean squared error (MSE), root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean per class error (MCE), and log loss are employed. The results obtained indicate that the H2OXGBoost algorithm outperforms other H2O models in terms of accuracy. This research contributes to the advancement of secure IoT networks and offers a practical approach to enhancing the security of MQTT communication channels through distributed detection and classification techniques. Coal pillar retention plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and minimizing ground deformation in coal mining operations. However, accurately and efficiently determining the optimal size of protective pillars, reducing coal pillar pressure, and addressing challenges such as limited access to retention parameters, lengthy observation times, and high labor costs are challenges that must be addressed. In this paper, we presented a methodology using Huainan mine as a case study to address these challenges. The solution involves deriving the formula for coal pillar retention parameters based on the Three Regulations definition and requirements. The total least squares algorithm was integrated with surface observation station data and the MATLAB software platform to automate the coal pillar retention solution. Furthermore, a linear regression model of coal pillar retention-related parameters was established using the geological mining condition data. The proposed ELM neural network model was optimized using a genetic algorithm and combined with the linear regression model to establish a predictive model. Malaria continues to be a major barrier to socioeconomic development in Africa, where its death rate is over 90%. The predictive power of many machine learning models—such as multi-linear regression (MLR), artificial neural networks (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFISs) and Random Forest classifier—is investigated in this study using data from 2207 patients. The dataset was reduced from the initial dataset of thirty-two criteria samples to fifteen. Assessment measures such as the root mean square error (RMSE), mean square error (MSE), coefficient of determination (R2), and adjusted correlation coefficient R were used. ANFIS, Random Forest, MLR, and ANN are among the models. After training, ANN outperforms ANFIS (97%), MLR (92%), and Random Forest (68%) with the greatest R (99%) and R2 (99%), respectively. The testing stage confirms the superiority of ANN. The paper also presents a statistical forecasting sheet with few errors and excellent accuracy for MLR models. When the models are assessed with Random Forest, the latter shows the least results, thus broadening the modeling techniques and offering significant insights into the prediction of malaria and healthcare decision making. The outcomes of using machine learning models for precise and efficient illness prediction add to an expanding body of knowledge, assisting healthcare systems in making better decisions and allocating resources more effectively. Modern data mining techniques using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms have been shown to excel in the regression-based task of materials property prediction using various materials representations. In an attempt to improve the predictive performance of the deep neural network model, researchers have tried to add more layers as well as develop new architectural components to create sophisticated and deep neural network models that can aid in the training process and improve the predictive ability of the final model. However, usually, these modifications require a lot of computational resources, thereby further increasing the already large model training time, which is often not feasible, thereby limiting usage for most researchers. In this paper, we study and propose a deep neural network framework for regression-based problems comprising of fully connected layers that can work with any numerical vector-based materials representations as model input. We present a novel deep regression neural network, iBRNet, with branched skip connections and multiple schedulers, which can reduce the number of parameters used to construct the model, improve the accuracy, and decrease the training time of the predictive model. We perform the model training using composition-based numerical vectors representing the elemental fractions of the respective materials and compare their performance against other traditional ML and several known DL architectures. Using multiple datasets with varying data sizes for training and testing, We show that the proposed iBRNet models outperform the state-of-the-art ML and DL models for all data sizes. We also show that the branched structure and usage of multiple schedulers lead to fewer parameters and faster model training time with better convergence than other neural networks. Scientific contribution: The combination of multiple callback functions in deep neural networks minimizes training time and maximizes accuracy in a controlled computational environment with parametric constraints for the task of materials property prediction.
