This paper examines the potential of solar and hydrogen (H 2) energy-based hybrid energy systems for residential applications. The growing need for energy and the demand for sustainable energy sources have led to the development of integrated energy systems that combine renewable energy resources to meet energy needs. This paper overviews recent studies on hybrid energy systems for on-grid and off-grid residential utilizations. It discusses the system configuration and components of hybrid energy systems, including solar panels, electrolyzers, fuel cells (FC), and batteries. It also covers the technical optimization of integrated energy systems, including sizing, control strategies, and economic analysis. The key findings of this review paper indicate that hybrid energy systems can offer dependable and sustainable energy for residential applications. Through numerical analyses, the optimal dimensioning of the system elements and control strategies can significantly enhance the system's performance and lower the cost of energy. This study also highlights the challenges and opportunities for integrating hybrid energy systems within residential applications. With the urgent global need to limit warming to 2 °C as well as a localized need in our case study to address rising energy demand amid electrical and thermal network limitations, a critical examination of demand-side energy reductions and the concept of energy sufficiency is needed. This paper contributes to the sparse literature on bottom-up analysis by utilizing Iceland—a leader in renewable energy generation—as a case study to explore the socio-economic factors influencing energy footprints. Our findings reveal significant energy footprints across various consumption domains, particularly housing and mobility, influenced by income levels, urbanization, and lifestyle choices. The study highlights the paradox of a high renewable energy supply leading to potential misconceptions regarding abundant and low-cost energy, resulting in substantial energy consumption-related environmental impacts. Using detailed household consumption survey data, this research provides insights crucial for developing sustainable energy policies that not only target technological advancements but also address the need for a reduction in energy demand and a shift towards energy sufficiency. This work marks a contribution to the literature through the provision of a case study of low income inequality and high energy footprints in a highly renewable energy system context. The variability and intermittency inherent in renewable energy sources poses significant challenges to balancing power supply and demand, often leading to wind and solar energy curtailment. To address these challenges, this paper focuses on enhancing Time of Use (TOU) electricity pricing strategies. We propose a novel method based on equivalent load, which leverages typical power grid load and incorporates a responsibility weight for renewable energy consumption. The responsibility weight acts as an equivalent coefficient that accurately reflects renewable energy output, which facilitates the division of time periods and the development of a demand response model. Subsequently, we formulate an optimized TOU electricity pricing model to increase the utilization rate of renewable energy and reduce the peak–valley load difference of the power grid. To solve the TOU pricing optimization model, we employ the Social Network Search (SNS) algorithm, a metaheuristic algorithm simulating users' social network interactions to gain popularity. By incorporating the users' mood when expressing opinions, this algorithm efficiently identifies optimal pricing solutions. Our results demonstrate that the equivalent load-based method not only encourages renewable energy consumption but also reduces power generation costs, stabilizes the power grid load, and benefits power generators, suppliers, and consumers without increasing end users' electricity charges. The green transition is a challenge for the Polish economy and energy sector. In this paper, the expert method of analysis was applied and findings revealed that the challenges and prerequisites for an effective transformation of the power sector mainly include technical, technological and organizational issues of energy production and use. The provision of electricity at competitive prices and with a low carbon footprint, for individual consumers and industry, is a prerequisite for maintaining the well-being of the population and ensuring the competitiveness of domestically produced goods. The ambitious climate policy goals of the European Union require immediate action and call for radical changes in the Polish energy sector; in the coming years, it must drastically reduce the amount of energy produced from fossil fuels and replace it with so-called green energy from renewable sources. The main purpose of this article was to highlight the need to modify Poland's energy policy until 2040 in order to make it more consistent with the ambitious climate goals of the European Union. This article also shows that Poland's energy transition must include a shift from fossil fuels to renewables, while ensuring that energy security is stabilized by the current energy and generation resources. This paper presents a framework for the efficient design and evaluation of a standalone hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) to meet the energy requirements of a rural community in the north-eastern region of Nigeria. The proposed microgrid system incorporates solar photovoltaic, wind turbines, biomass gasifier, fuel cell, and Battery storage. The sizing of each component is determined through the utilization of real local meteorological data and the load demand over a year, employing the Levy flight-salp swarm algorithms (LF-SSA). The optimization objective is to minimize the annualized system cost (ASC) of the HRES, while also considering the reliability constraint of Loss of power supply probability (LPSP). The comparative outcomes demonstrate that the LF-SSA surpasses other examined algorithms, namely the salp swarm, genetic algorithm, and HOMER software by achieving substantial cost savings of $29033, $50796, $191771 respectively in relation to the proposed HRES. The result further shows that, the LF-SSA provides the lowest LCOE of $0.933162/kWh, in contrast to SSA at $0.947737/kWh, GA at $0.958660/kWh, and HOMER at $1.075351/kWh. There is a rapid increase in power demand which has led to an increase in the need for smaller grids all over the world. The microgrid is such a small power supply system that consists of loads, distributed energy resources, and energy storage systems. With the development of the internet, the power sector has started the development of the newest type of grids, involving a smart technology called smart grids. Smart grids have got smart integration and advanced storage, along with dynamic optimization of grid operation and resources, digital information and control, distributed resources, demand-side resources, energy efficiency resources, and smart metering systems. The developments in intelligent controllers reflect in power flow management also. This paper gives an idea of how to achieve power flow management through a tariff-based Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). The control algorithm used here is the k factor-based Icosϕ algorithm, which decides the amount of power shared by microgrids and the grid based on the load demand. The power forecasting of the microgrid with a solar source is performed using ANN. The regression plot and the error histogram obtained show the accuracy of the ANN controller. The simulation of power flow management of the smart microgrid system is tested and analyzed and the proposed system is compared with other existing research. The hardware implementation of the FLC controller with the Arduino interface which is analogous to real-time measurement is explained in detail to compare the simulation results obtained. In recent times, the research in sustainable energy resources was integrated with the control approaches of various hybrid renewable energy systems for balancing the electricity generation. The accelerated hybrid energy storage systems and steadily growing energy consumption make the variability and the predictable behavior occur in the renewable energy sources, which requires an energy management system. This paper aims to control hybrid renewable energy systems for power management. The systems consist of photovoltaic (PV) arrays, diesel generators, wind systems with boost converter DC-DC, and inverters. The optimum of the real-time process is less due to prediction errors of multiple renewable sources, which track the output voltage and load current. Model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for problem-solving time operation to address this issue and compensate for the prediction error. The major impact factors, such as optimal split power, stability, reliability of energy, and desired dynamic responses, have been identified by applying the MPC technique. Nowadays, climate change is a major global societal challenge that significantly increases environmental stress. Most international organizations and policies have promoted initiatives to minimize emissions, reduce fossil fuel dependence and increase renewable energy resource integration into different sectors. An energy transformation towards more renewable systems is thus a priority. Under this scenario, the present paper describes and evaluates an alternative energy conversion matrix-based model to combine sector electrification, power generation units from renewables, and new clean technologies. The proposed green matrix-based model allows analyzing future scenarios, including electricity participation in end-use consumption and electric power generated by renewables – potentially integrated into different sectors –. The proposed model is evaluated in the state of Maine (United States). This case study is focused on decarbonizing both residential heating and transport sector through the integration of large offshore wind power plant. Results and discussion is also included in the paper, providing expected energy demand reductions and decreasing emissions through the integration of renewables. This energy transition integration case study is proposed in three road-maps with different penetration rates and time scales. Hence, the optimal sizing of HRES is essential to prevent the oversizing of the system while ensuring a reliable supply of load demand, accommodating variations in meteorological conditions and changes in power demand. Results: To the existed problem in current research, an example is presented to verify the effectiveness of proposed method, which brings forward N-1 security test method in the operation scenario of integrated energy system, analyzes the impact of renewable energy on the security region model, and realizes the optimal selection for observation variables of simplified security region. Conclusions: Interval security region of integrated energy system can intuitively estimate the security status of operating points and observe the security boundaries. The integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, batteries, etc. into the grid presents opportunities as well as challenges with regard to efficient coordination and trading. Virtual power plants (VPPs) have emerged as an important paradigm for aggregating and managing numerous DERs. This paper proposes a decentralized blockchain-based peer-to-peer (P2P) multilayer energy trading framework to facilitate optimized coordination of DERs within a VPP context. A control center, prosumers, and service operators constitute the model's multi-layered architecture. Profits from feed-in tariffs, ancillary services, and P2P sales are optimized for revenue while expenses are minimized using a mixed-integer linear programming formulation. Smart contracts enable prosumers to trade energy units in the Ethereum blockchain with ease via a participatory web platform. The effectiveness of the framework in synchronizing power supply and demand within the VPP by coordinating the charging and discharging of storage systems in accordance with consumption patterns is demonstrated through performance evaluation. With the growing share of the climate-sensitive renewable energy market supply in China, estimating future energy drought risk (ED) is essential. In this paper, based on CMIP6, energy demand and power generation are estimated from 2023 to 2100 under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 climate scenarios, and ED is defined from high demand (HD), low wind-solar generation (LWS), and residual load (RL). The results show that the ED exacerbation is relatively high under the SSP5-8.5. Between 2023 and 2100, the duration and severity of HD and RL notably increase, while LWS changes are relatively weak. We find that HD and RL exhibit high summer risks in the south and high winter risk in the north. The return periods vary significantly and extends over time in most regions. Moreover, there are few ED when the installed power generation capacity (IPGC) is increased. When the IPGC increases by 2%–5%, the LWS will decrease at least 20%–72%. With a 10% increase, the LWS will be mitigated by at least 80%, whereas the mitigation for RL is limited, approximately 3–17% at different rates. With the rapid expansion of computational infrastructure, the electricity consumption of geographically dispersed Internet Data Centers (IDCs) has imposed a substantial influence on the power grid. Geographically distributed IDCs, which present a versatile electricity demand with significant operational flexibility, hold potential for mitigating cost issues and balancing regional supply and load demand. To exploit this flexibility, this paper has developed a dual-drive coordinated operational strategy, which integrates locational electricity prices and unit carbon emission costs based on the dynamic carbon emission intensity (DCEI) of various regions as interaction signals to improve coordination effectiveness. The upper-level determines the consumption behaviour of IDCs, the lower-level provides feedback on dual-drive signals factoring in IDCs' involvement in grid operation, whilst an iterative algorithm is suggested to solve the bi-level model. Case studies based on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed operation strategy can achieve arbitrage through multi-regional carbon-electricity markets, significantly reduce operating costs, and support the rapid development of IDCs. This paper comprehensively reviewed case studies on MBES that have achieved zero-energy, nearly-zero-energy, and positive-energy performance. The literature review, facilitated by a combination of database searches and snowball search techniques, has yielded 67 relevant case studies. The findings revealed diverse pathways towards achieving optimal renewable energy production depending on the location and the climate. Integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems is pivotal in achieving economies of scale, reducing operational costs, and enhancing resilience and reliability of energy supply at the neighbourhood scale. Total energy use and emissions reduction could be achieved by considering the architectural features of the building stocks. The study highlighted the need for adaptive strategies in MBES implementation to address challenges such as power grid overloads and the complexities of spatial arrangement, to meet current demands, while ensuring long-term energy resilience and sustainability in evolving urban landscapes. The limited adoption of MBES simulation software suggests a need for accessible tailored software. Future research should focus on developing advanced personalised energy management and control strategies, while continuously assessing emerging technologies for improving MBES performance. This paper presents a model for optimizing the life cycle economic and environmental impacts of a hybrid renewable energy and battery storage system – as energy supply technologies (EST) for off-grid farms. Micro-hydropower and photovoltaics represent the primary renewable energy (RE) sources, with batteries and a diesel generator considered as possible back-up systems. A modified Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) was developed and applied to a case study farm in Southern Spain and provided different EST solutions to optimize a design based on economic (life cycle costing or LCC) and environmental (life cycle assessment or LCA) constraints. The results highlighted that cases with a strong dependence on batteries could achieve minimum costs and lower impacts for climate change and energy resources (non-renewable fuels). In contrast, the optimal system for minimizing the consumption of material resources (metals/minerals) resulted in higher fuel use, which was up to 25% more expensive. The optimal EST solutions used up to 37% of the total energy generated; however, the results were sensitive to energy production-demand distributions. This research investigates the relationship between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy production and consumption patterns in 122 countries over the period from 1990 to 2020. Particular attention is paid to the role of different types of energy, including renewable, hydro and nuclear energy, as well as oil, gas and coal, in shaping GHG emissions. Unlike previous studies, the paper analyzes the full range of energy resources and focuses on different quantiles of data using the quantile-quantile regression (QQR) method. The results of this approach are compared with traditional quantile regression (QR) to assess its validity. Among the findings of this study are: (1) different parts of the energy mix have a heterogeneous impact on GHG emissions in different quantiles; (2) energy consumption patterns play a more significant role in shaping GHG emissions than production patterns; (3) increasing production and consumption of fossil fuels does not necessarily increase GHG emissions; (4) similarly, the development of renewable energy sources is not always accompanied by a reduction in GHG emissions. Our general conclusion is that existing climate policy requires significant diversification to not be focused only on renewable energy, which impact on GHG emissions is not as homogeneous as it usually considered, and which cannot solve the problem of raising emissions solely.
