Presidential rhetoric has always been an important element of presidential leadership, and political scholars have learned a great deal about the rhetorical strategies presidents have used over the years to communicate with the public. Often, this research focuses on verbal or written speech, which is clearly the most obvious and easily studied aspect of rhetoric, but in the field of presidential rhetoric this is where the examination often ends. In this paper I suggest that political scientists should look beyond the rhetoric of speech and look at the other strategies available to leaders, such as visual imagery. Visual imagery can be very powerful rhetorically, and this paper will examine how this strategy was useful to candidates during the presidential campaign of 2008. In fact, images can sometimes be more persuasive than words, because they can communicate messages that are not appropriate to put into words. In general, the study of presidential rhetoric would be enriched by expanding the prevailing understanding of rhetoric beyond speeches to include all types of persuasive behavior. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
