ObjectiveTo investigate the content validity of Paper 1 of the MRCGP examination. MethodExploratory factor analysis was carried out on candidate responses to Paper 1 of the May and October MRCGP examination in 1998. Contribution of each test question across factors was assessed using a pattern matrix of the oblique rotation. Common dimensions and variations between factor sets were identified. Key testing areas were then matched against the ‘domains of competence’ intended to be assessed by Paper 1 (as defined within the examination blueprint matrix). ResultsWhilst critical appraisal, disease prevention/evidence-based medicine and clinical management emerged as areas tested consistently, content variation was observed between factor sets extracted from both sittings. In addition, some overlap, in terms of domains tested, was seen among other assessment instruments used within the examination. ConclusionPaper 1 conforms to the majority of its stated intentions. However, further development of techniques for investigating validity will be required in order to minimize content variation between both sittings of the examination as well as to help more closely define areas of competence to be tested by Paper 1 of the MRCGP examination. This paper explores the idea of "place‐based diversity" to examine the nature of undergraduate Geography students' attainment and progression with a specific focus on gender, ethnicity and socio‐economic status. In addressing the empirical neglect of progression when assessing inequalities in achievements among Geography students in general and the specific lack of research at the departmental level, the paper contributes to debates on challenging intersectional exclusion within the discipline at a university in London. While it shows that undergraduate Geography no longer privileges male, middle‐class students in terms of attainment, those from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds perform less well. While this is partly addressed by encouraging patterns of higher progression rates among BME students, much more needs to be done. Contributing to existing Bourdieusian analyses of student experiences as well as the role of the university in society, this requires exploration of students' identities and agency, especially their "dutiful aspirational capital," together with the "institutional habitus" of departments and universities and where they are situated geographically. While departmental support mechanisms have helped in facilitating progression for the disadvantaged, this must be combined with developing more positive diverse role models, curriculum change and targeted support practices that avoid the "black deficit model" which assumes that BME students are "lacking." This paper challenges assumptions about undergraduate geography students as white, male and middle‐class based on research within a department of Geography in the east of London in the United Kingdom (UK). In arguing that progression must be taken as seriously as attainment, it shows that while female undergraduates and those from less advantaged socio‐economic backgrounds are not necessarily hindered, ethnicity remains an issue. In explaining these patterns, the notion of "place‐based diversity" is useful in capturing the structures of institutions that are situating within specific localities and policy environments as well as the agency of departments to create conditions that are conducive to celebrating diversity. In this paper I argue that the intersecting sociologies of ethnicity and migration work from a series of interconnected blind spots hindering effective analysis of the current UK situation. Both operate analytically within the limitations of an 'immigrant problem' framework; are overinvested in state agendas; privilege a nation state analysis; are narrowly focused on distributions of migrant bodies, and on receiving, at the expense of sending, contexts. Exploring these limitations with data derived from a modest small-scale qualitative study of young Chinese migrants in London, I argue for a reframing along four dimensions. Firstly, in an era of elite migration, sociology could reach beyond its immigrant problem framework and open up to a broader range of UK migrant ethnicities and circumstances. Secondly, a stronger focus on cities as the scale on which lives are lived, and through which diverse streams of translocal activity are routed, would open new avenues of sociological exploration. Thirdly, including translocal activities connected with distributions of ethnic migrant bodies, such as capital transfers, would broaden its focus, taking migration and ethnicity more centrally into the analysis of globalization as one of its constituting practices. Finally, paying attention to sending, as well as arrival cities, reveals migrants' thinking and shapes the ways in which they live, as my data shows. The Chinese are both one of the UK's neglected minorities, and one of its fastest growing populations. A stimulating body of work, which sits at the intersection of feminist and queer geographies, argues that embodied performativity can not be separated from the study of home. This paper seeks to expand on this work by looking closely at spatial mobility and homemaking imaginaries of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) Londoners. Specifically, I focus on two separate yet related locations in the production of home: the parental home and the home established in adulthood. The paper argues that for LGBT Londoners, both sites play an important, complex role whereby homemaking identity is shaped through the tension or push and pull of these two locations. The parental home can be an isolated space where one's sexual identity remains, if not closeted, then modified. Often, one flees the home in the process of 'coming out', and identity is expressed differently in the new home. Given this departure, arrival, and return (to visit), how does the parental home relate to one's current identity and homemaking practices? The research for the paper is drawn from eight semi-structured interviews conducted with Londoners. Using this research and the physical and emotional embodiment framework, I also draw parallels with Blunt's theme of 'productive nostalgia', whereby both the physical spatial embodiment as well as the narrative of imagination - in past (as in conventional understandings of nostalgia), present, and future - act as a lens to understanding the homemaking of LGBT Londoners. The banking crisis of 2007-2008 briefly threatened to overturn a system of market government that had lasted for nearly three decades—a system designed to minimise democratic control over markets. The crisis drew politicians once more into financial politics and exposed bankers and banking institutions to popular criticism and control. But the development of regulatory debates, and of the institutions designed to manage the crisis, have combined to avert this threat to the established order. The crisis is being ‘wasted’: it is failing to produce radical reforms. The paper establishes the intellectual and institutional origins of this failure, and argues that, while the reform window is closing, it is not yet fully shut: there exists yet scope for radical argument and popular mobilisation in the creation of a financial system with fewer pathological features. Notwithstanding their remarkable recent growth, surprisingly little research has hitherto been conducted on the evolving geography of professional and business services in Britain. This paper analyses the results of a detailed survey of 300 small and medium-sized management and engineering consultancies, in investigating the forces underpinning both the striking clustering of such firms in central London and their growth in decentralized locations of East Anglia and South West England. Particular attention is paid to the notion of clustering, the role of demand-side influences, localized ‘collective learning’ processes, and increasing globalization in clustering, and to so-called ‘enterprising behaviour theory’ in explaining decentralization. Many multiple-choice questions (MCQs) used in medical education in the UK contain undefined, imprecise terms. They are particularly common in true/false items and can be found in classroom tests, published examples of MCQs and, more importantly, in high-stakes examinations which determine a candidate's graduation or membership of a professional body. This study investigated imprecise terms used in some MB BS finals examinations and the Part 1 Membership Examination of the Royal College of Physicians. It revealed that imprecise terms occur commonly, yet there is a wide range of opinion among the examiners themselves about their meanings. The numbers and variety of imprecise terms which were found in high-stakes MCQ examinations are described in this paper and details are given concerning the lack of consensus about their meanings as reported by the responsible examiners. A second type of construction error – disproportionately large numbers of `true' branches – was also recorded. Exemplary practices do exist in MCQ quality assurance, but in the UK they are very much the exception rather than the rule. The findings of this investigation strongly indicate a need for change.
