Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the electronically commutated motor (ECM), specifically as it applies to an application in an air terminal unit. Comparisons of efficiencies for an ECM and traditional permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor are presented, as well as a novel relationship for the determination of a system's downstream static pressure when an ECM motor's rpm and flow rate are known. In this investigation, the ECM motor consumed less power than the PSC motor for all points examined. The cost difference for operating the ECM motor ranged from about 30% lower during high flow rate conditions to about 70% lower during turndown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in a phased-array system is considered for a non-Gaussian noise environment. In this paper, a robust M-estimation scheme based on Huber's loss function with an adaptive threshold is proposed. The method is evaluated using experimental data from the University of California, Los Angeles, 60-GHz antenna-array system. It is shown that the proposed method enables a decreased sensitivity of the DOA estimates with respect to noise components having heavy-tailed distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports the Santa Clara County, California, recently became the first county in the U.S. to purchase voting machines that produce paper receipts, a move that reflects the concern over the trend toward electronic voting machines. Santa Clara's Board of Supervisors agreed to invest $20 million for 5,000 voting machines from Sequoia Voting Systems, Oakland, California, which provide voter-verified paper backup.
