Shellfish constitute a diverse group of aquatic animals, encompassing numerous species of molluscs and crustaceans able to supply important nutrients beneficial to human health. However, information regarding their nutritional properties remain scarce. In this paper, we explore the nutrient composition of shellfish, including shrimps, mussels, scallops, crabs, crayfish, and lobsters, collected from supermarkets, local fishermen, and the North Atlantic Ocean. By analysing over 800 samples collected between 2011 and 2021, we show that shellfish are able to provide high quantities of protein (8.1–21 g/100 g), essential amino acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) [sum of 0.061–4.3 g/100 g], vitamin B 12 (0.82–65 µg/100 g), vitamin E (0.75–28 mg/100 g), zinc (0.61–7.9 mg/100 g), iodine (3.1–2100 µg/100 g), and selenium (7.2–590 µg/100 g). The hepatopancreas of crustaceans was found to be substantially more nutrient-dense than the white meat. Furthermore, the shellfish included in this study cannot be considered good sources of riboflavin, niacin, folate, and vitamin D 3. We conclude that shellfish can substantially contribute to recommended nutrient intakes by providing high quantities of key nutrients. Recent observations have heightened concerns that the reduced density of coastal water is leading to a decrease in the frequency of basin water renewal in Norwegian sill fjords. There are indications that coastal water is becoming lighter due to climate change. The renewal of fjord basin water constitutes the primary source of oxygenation in these fjords, and many sill fjords naturally undergo stagnation periods lasting up to several years. In this paper, we have mapped alterations in coastal water using time series data from hydrographic measurements along the coastline, utilizing them as input for a simplified two-layer fjord model. We demonstrate that the temperature has risen, salinity has decreased, and consequently, the density of coastal water has declined since approximately 1990. At a depth of 10 m, the rise in temperature and the reduction in salinity made similar contributions to the decrease in density. However, at depths of 50 and 100 m, the increasing temperature emerged as the primary factor. The density exhibited a more substantial decrease in the upper layers compared to the lower layers. Consequently, not only was the water less dense, but the stability of the water column had also increased. The estimated temperature in the fjord basins increased after 1990 in 98 out of 101 evaluated fjords, with an average increase of 0.6 °C. The altered coastal stratification had an impact on the estimated work against the buoyant forces in the fjord basins. In 78 out of the 101 fjords, the work against buoyant forces by diapycnal mixing increased. In most of the fjord basins where the work against buoyant forces increased, the rise was insufficient to compensate for the decreasing density at the coast. There is an increasing interest in considering the effects of air pollution on ecosystem services supply in order to enhance cost-benefit analyses of air pollution policies. This paper presents a generic, conceptual approach that can be used to link atmospheric deposition of air pollutants to ecosystem services supply and societal benefits. The approach is applied in a case study in the Telemark county of Norway. First, we examine the potential effects of four European air quality policy scenarios on N deposition in the ecosystems of this county. Second, we analyse the subsequent impacts on the supply of three ecosystem services: carbon sequestration, timber production and biodiversity. Changes in the supply of the first two services are analysed in both physical and monetary units, biodiversity effects are only analysed in physical terms. The scenarios derive from work conducted in the context of the European National Emissions Ceilings Directive. In the 2010 base case the benefits of carbon sequestration are estimated at 13 million euro per year and the value of timber harvesting at 2.9 million euro per year. Under the examined policy scenarios aiming to reduce nitrogen emissions the societal benefits resulting from these two ecosystem services in Telemark are found to be reduced; the scenarios have little effect on terrestrial biodiversity. Such results cannot be scaled up, individual ecosystem services respond differently to changes in air pollution depending upon type of pollutant, type of ecosystem, type of service, and the magnitude of change. The paper further presents an analysis of the uncertainties that need to be considered in linking air pollution and ecosystem services including those in deposition rates, ecosystem responses, human responses and in the values of ecosystem services. This paper addresses the recent discussion on confounding in the returns to college quality literature using the Norwegian case. The main advantage of studying Norway is the quality of the data. Norwegian administrative data provide information on college applications, family relations and a rich set of control variables for all Norwegian citizens applying to college between 1997 and 2004 (N=141,319) and their succeeding wages between 2003 and 2010 (676,079 person-year observations). With these data, this paper uses a subset of the models that have rendered mixed findings in the literature in order to investigate to what extent confounding biases the returns to college quality. I compare estimates obtained using standard regression models to estimates obtained using the self-revelation model of Dale and Krueger (2002), a sibling fixed effects model and the instrumental variable model used by Long (2008). Using these methods, I consistently find increasing returns to college quality over the course of students' work careers, with positive returns only later in students' work careers. This paper documents, for the first time, municipality- and occupation-level estimates of income inequality between individuals in a European country in the nineteenth century, using a combination of several detailed data sets for Norway in the late 1860s. Urban incomes were on average 4.5 times as high as rural incomes, and the average city Gini coefficient was twice the average rural municipality Gini. All high- or medium-income occupation groups exhibited substantial within-occupation income inequality. Across municipalities, income inequality is higher in high-income municipalities, and lower in muncipalities with high levels of fisheries and pastoral agriculture. While manufacturing activity is positively correlated with income inequality, the association is not apparent when other economic factors such as the mode of food production is accounted for. The income Gini for Norway as a whole is found to have been 0.546, slightly higher than estimates for the UK and US in the same period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficient catalytic activity and strong durability possibility of carbon-based three-dimensional fiber materials remains an important challenge in Electro-Fenton advanced oxidation technology. Graphite felt (GF) is a promising electrode material for 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction but with higher catalytic inertia. Anodizing modification of GF has been proved to enhance it electro-catalytic property, but the disadvantages of excessive or insufficient oxidation of GF need further improved. Herein, the surface reconstituted graphite felt by anodizing and HNO 3 ultrasonic integrated treatment was used as cathode to degrade norfloxacin (NOR) and the substantial role of different modification processes was essentially investigated. Compared with the single modification process, the synergistic interaction between these two methods can generate more defective active sites (DASs) on GF surface and greatly improved 2-electron ORR activity. The H 2 O 2 can be further co-activated by Fe2+ and DASs into •OH (ads and free) and •O 2 − to efficiently degrade NOR. The treated GF with 20 min anodizing and 1 h HNO 3 ultrasound had the highest electrocatalytic activity in a wide electric potential (−0.4 V to −0.8 V) and pH range (3–9) in system and the efficient removal rate of NOR was basically maintained after 5 cycles. Under optimal reaction conditions, 50 mg L−1 NOR achieved 93% degradation and almost 63% of NOR was completely mineralized within 120 min. The possible NOR degradation pathways and ecotoxicity of intermediates were analyzed by LC-MS and T.E.S.T. theoretical calculation. This paper studies the application of a stage-based model of consumer behavior change on describing the processes behind the reduction of beef consumption in two Norwegian samples (N = 746, N = 2967). The way to reduce beef consumption is modeled through a progression through four stages (predecision, decision, action, and postaction) with a chain of first forming goal intentions, then more concrete behavioral intentions and finally implementation intentions. The analyzes show that general goal intentions to reduce beef consumption are determined by perceived social norms and awareness of a behaviors negative consequences through the activation of personal norms. Attitudes are the main determinant of choosing the alternative behavior (reduction of portion size, substitution of beef with other meats or seafood, or vegetarian meals), but perceived difficulty of behavior also has an impact for some alternatives. Not all alternative behaviors correspond to reduced beef consumption. The pattern of means in beef consumption and intentions for consumers in different stages of change mostly matched predictions by the model, most importantly, showing beef consumption reduction only for consumers in the last stage of change. Objective: This paper examines the short-term risk of cause-specific death following widowhood.Method: We followed all individuals registered as married in Norway in 1975 for marital status and mortality until 2006. Widowed individuals were followed for mortality for 7years following widowhood. Causes of death were categorized into five cause-groups. Life tables were used in survival analyses.Results: Deaths among the widowed were most frequent in the week following widowhood. In this week and compared to married individuals, there were more deaths including those from malignant cancer in men (hazard ratio (HR) of 1.51; 95% CI: 1.12, 1.89), from external causes in men (HR=3.64; 95% CI: 2.01, 5.28), and from respiratory diseases (HR=2.18; 95% CI: 1.52, 2.84 in men and HR=3.18; 95% CI: 2.26, 4.09 in women). A majority of respiratory deaths were from pneumonia. Thereafter excess mortality among the widowed dropped gradually. Although these numbers stabilized, they were still elevated in year 7. Excess mortality was particularly high in the youngest age group considered (55-64years) and decreased with age, though more so in men than in women. Only a few more widowed individuals than expected died of a condition in the same cause-group as their spouses.Conclusion: A novel finding was that excess deaths in the week following widowhood also were from cancer and respiratory diseases. Men in the youngest age group seemed most vulnerable. Prevention should be considered directly after the death of a spouse, and measures should be aimed at virtually all causes of death. Microbes play an important role in the degradation of fish products, thus better knowledge of the microbiological conditions throughout the fish production chain may help to optimise product quality and resource utilisation. This paper presents the results of a ten-year spot sampling programme (2005–2014) of the commercially most important pelagic fish species harvested in Norway. Fish-, surface-, and storage water samples were collected from fishing vessels and processing factories. Totally 1 181 samples were assessed with respect to microbiological quality, hygiene and food safety. We introduce a quality and safety assessment scheme for fresh pelagic fish recommending limits for heterotrophic plate counts (HPC), thermos tolerant coliforms, enterococci and Listeria monocytogenes . According to the scheme, in 25 of 41 samplings, sub-optimal conditions were found with respect to quality, whereas in 21 and 9 samplings, samples were not in compliance concerning hygiene and food safety, respectively. The present study has revealed that the quality of pelagic fish can be optimised by improving the hygiene conditions at some critical points at an early phase of the production chain. Thus, the proposed assessment scheme may provide a useful tool for the industry to optimise quality and maintain consumer safety of pelagic fishery products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Household food waste is a significant environmental challenge, and almost half of the total global food waste comes from households. Thus, it is crucial to understand why food is wasted at home. This paper proposes a new method, Fridge Studies, that provides knowledge on food waste drivers adding to the research currently documenting the amounts and types of food wasted. Fridge studies is based on social practice theory, suggesting that waste is produced through food handling practices. By rummaging through the fridge together with the study participants, this method provides thick descriptions of practices that generate food waste in an efficient manner. Researchers and participants talk while rummaging, selecting food items and telling their story, as well as photographing the fridge and its content. The method was developed as part of three projects on sustainable food consumption in Norway and has been employed in 57 households. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
