Density functional theory was used to study interactions between phosphine and 17 functional groups, revealing that only the functional groups containing metal ions bind phosphine strongly. This led to a detailed examination of the adsorption of the pnictogen hydride gases ammonia, phosphine, and arsine on 33 metal catecholates in order to examine periodic trends in the binding strength for these adsorbates. Phosphine and arsine adsorption is primarily driven by donation of electron density from the adsorbate molecule to the metal atom, while ammonia binding involves both electron donation and a significant Coulomb attraction between the negatively charged N atom and the positive metal atom. This Coulomb effect results in notably different binding behavior for ammonia than for phosphine and arsine, which are quite similar to each other. Generally, for metals on the left side of the periodic table, the Coulomb effect dominates in ammonia adsorption, and metals on the right side of the periodic table have lower positive charge and accept greater amounts of electron density, making the electron-sharing contribution more important to the binding strength. We find that more electronegative metals, particularly Pd, Ir, Pt, and Au, which accept more electron density from the adsorbate, yield the best selectivity for the target molecules over water because water adsorption is mostly due to Coulomb attraction. To investigate postcombustion capture of CO2 in the presence of water, we developed a pressure/vacuum swing adsorption (P/VSA) cycle model consisting of a system of partial differential algebraic equations incorporating mass and energy balances, the Ergun equation for pressure changes, competitive Langmuir isotherms, and the linear driving force model. Four potential adsorbents, zeolites 13X and 5A and the MOFs HKUST-1 and Ni-MOF-74, are investigated, evaluated, and compared. Using this simulation, a two-stage Skarstrom cycle, coupled with an upstream dehydration unit and a downstream compression unit, is optimized using a nondominant sorting genetic algorithm, NSGA-II, to minimize the overall cost of capturing 90% of CO2 from flue gas at a purity of 90% and compressing it for pipeline transportation at 110 bar. The results show that under dry flue gas conditions, zeolite 13X is the best performing adsorbent with an overall cost of $32.1/ton of CO2. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for a range of energy and environmental applications. Here we describe in detail a computational algorithm and code to generate MOFs based on edge-transitive topological nets for subsequent evaluation via molecular simulation. This algorithm has been previously used by us to construct and evaluate 13 512 MOFs of 41 different topologies for cryo-adsorbed hydrogen storage. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are used here to evaluate the 13 512 structures for the storage of gaseous fuels such as hydrogen and methane and nondistillative separation of xenon/krypton mixtures at various operating conditions. MOF performance for both gaseous fuel storage and xenon/krypton separation is influenced by topology. Simulation data suggest that gaseous fuel storage performance is topology-dependent due to MOF properties such as void fraction and surface area combining differently in different topologies, whereas xenon/krypton separation performance is topology-dependent due to how topology constrains the pore size distribution. Competitive coadsorption of water is a major problem in the deployment of adsorption-based CO2 capture. Water molecules may compete for adsorption sites, reducing the capacity of the material, and dehumidification prior to separating CO2 from N2 increases process complexity and cost. The development of adsorbent materials that can selectively adsorb CO2 in the presence of water would be a major step forward in the deployment of CO2 capture materials in practice. In this study, large-scale computational screening was carried out to search for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high selectivity toward CO2 over H2O. Calculating framework charges for thousands of MOFs is a significant challenge, so initial screening used a fast, but approximate, charge calculation method. On the basis of the initial screening, 15 MOFs were selected, and Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to compute the adsorption isotherms for these MOFs using more accurate framework charges calculated by density functional theory. A detailed investigation was performed on the effect of using different methods for calculating partial charges, and it was found that electrostatic interactions contribute the majority of the adsorption energy of H2O in the selected MOFs. Computational high-throughput screening was carried out to assess a large number of experimentally reported metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites for their utility in hexane isomer separation. Through the work, we identified many MOFs and zeolites with high selectivity (SL+M > 10) for the group of n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, and 3-methylpentane (linear and monobranched isomers) versus 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane (dibranched isomers). This group of selective sorbents includes VICDOC (Fe2(BDP)3), a MOF with triangular pores that is known to exhibit high isomer selectivity and capacity. For three of these structures, the adsorption isotherms for a 10-component mixture of hexane and heptane isomers were calculated. Subsequent simulations of column breakthrough curves showed that the DEYVUA MOF exhibits a longer process cycle time than VICDOC MOF or MRE zeolite, which are previously reported, high-performing materials, illustrating the importance of capacity in designing MOFs for practical applications. Among the identified candidates, we synthesized and characterized a MOF in a new copper form with high predicted adsorbent capacity (qL+M > 1.2 mol/L) and moderately high selectivity (SL+M ≈ 10). Finally, we examined the role of pore shape in hexane isomer separations, especially of triangular-shaped pores. We show through the potential energy surface and three-dimensional siting analyses that linear alkanes do not populate the corners of narrow triangular channels and that structures with nontriangular pores can efficiently separate hexane isomers. Efforts to computationally characterize large numbers of nanoporous materials often rely on databases of experimentally resolved crystal structures. The accuracy of experimental crystal structures used in such calculations has a significant impact on the reliability of the results. In this work, we report structures optimized using periodic density functional theory (DFT) for more than 800 experimentally synthesized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Many MOFs changed significantly upon structural optimization, particularly materials that were crystallographically resolved in their solvated form. For each MOF, we simulated the adsorption of CH4 and CO2 using grand canonical Monte Carlo both before and after DFT optimization. The DFT optimization has a large impact on simulated gas adsorption in some cases. For example, CO2 loading at 1 bar changed by more than 25% in over 25% of the MOFs we considered. Catalytic activity for acyl transfer from Nacetylimidazole (NAI) to different pyridylcarbinol (PC) regioisomers (2-PC, 3-PC, and 4-PC) is demonstrated for a set of topologically diverse, zirconium-based (porphinato)zinc metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs studied are PCN-222, MOF-525, and NU-902, which are based on the esq, ftw, and scu topologies, respectively. The experimentally obtained reaction kinetics are discussed in light of molecular modeling results. The catalytic activity is shown to vary across the series of MOFs due to the different extent to which each topology facilitates reactant preconcentration and alignment of PC and NAI via coordination to framework porphyrin sites (orientation effects). Trends of experimental initial reaction rates with MOF topology and PC regioisomer are consistent with preconcentration effects, which depend on the number of porphyrin sites per volume of MOF, as well as with orientation effects, which depend on the number of porphyrin pairs per volume of MOF that bind PC and NAI in such a way that they are primed to form the required transition state. We describe the incorporation of a bistable mechanically interlocked molecule (MIM) into a robust Zr-based metal--organic framework (MOF), NU-1000, by employing a post-synthetic functionalization protocol. On average, close to two bistable [2]catenanes can be incorporated per repeating unit of the hexagonal channels of NU-1000. The reversible redox-switching of the bistable [2]catenanes is retained inside the MOF, as evidenced by solid-state UV-vis-NIR reflectance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied in the context of a wide variety of applications, particularly in relation to molecular storage and separation sciences. Recently, we reported a green, renewable framework material composed ofγ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and alkali metal salts--namely, CD-MOF. This porous material has been shown to facilitate the separation of mixtures of alkylaromatic compounds, including the BTEX mixture (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the regioisomers of xylene), into their pure components, in both the liquid and gas phases, in an energy-efficient manner which could have implications for the petrochemical industry. Here, we report the ability of CD-MOF to separate a wide variety of mixtures, including ethylbenzene from styrene, haloaromatics, terpinenes, pinenes and other chiral compounds. CD-MOF retains saturated compounds to a greater extent than their unsaturated analogues. Also, the location of a double bond within a molecule influences its retention within the extended framework, as revealed in the case of the structural isomers of pinene and terpinine, where the isomers with exocyclic double bonds are more highly retained than those with endocyclic double bonds. The ability of CD-MOF to separate various mono- and disubstituted haloaromatic compounds appears to be controlled by both the size of the halogen substituents and the strength of the noncovalent bonding interactions between the analyte and the framework, an observation which has been confirmed by molecular simulations. Since CD-MOF is a homochiral framework, it is also able to resolve the enantiomers of chiral analytes, including those of limonene and 1-phenylethanol. These findings could lead to cheaper and easier-to-prepare stationary phases for HPLC separations when compared with other chiral stationary phases, such as CD-bonded silica particles. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can exhibit exceptionally high surface areas, which are experimentally estimated by applying the BET theory to measured nitrogen isotherms. The Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET)-estimated nitrogen monolayer loading is thus converted to a "BET area," but the meaning of MOF BET areas remains under debate. Recent emphasis has been placed on the usage of four so-called "BET consistency criteria." Using these criteria and simulated nitrogen isotherms for perfect crystals, we calculated BET areas for graphene and 25 MOFs having different pore-size distributions. BET areas were compared with their corresponding geometrically calculated, nitrogen-accessible surface areas (NASAs). Analysis of simulation snapshots elucidated the contributions of "pore-filling" and "monolayer-formation" to the nitrogen adsorption loadings in different MOF pores, revealing the origin of inaccuracies in BET-calculated monolayer loadings, which largely explain discrepancies between BET areas and NASAs. We also find that even if all consistency criteria are satisfied, the BET calculation can significantly overestimate the true monolayer loading, especially in MOFs combining mesopores (d ≥ 20 Å) and large micropores (d = 10-20 Å), due to the overlap of pore-filling and monolayer-formation regimes of these two kinds of pores. While it is not always possible to satisfy all consistency criteria, it is critical to minimize the deviation from these criteria during BET range selection to consistently compare BET areas of different MOFs and for comparing simulated and experimental BET areas of a given MOF. "Breathing" metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of soft porous crystals (SPCs) with potential for high working capacity for gas storage applications. However, most breathing MOFs have low stability and/or low surface area. Here we report a water-stable, high surface area, breathing MOF of ftw topology, NU-1105. While Zr6-oxo clusters as nodes introduce water stability in NU-1105, its high surface area and breathing character stem from its pyrene-based tetracarboxylate (Py-FP) linkers, in which the fluorene units (F) in the FP "arms" play a key role in promoting breathing behavior. During gas sorption studies, the "closed pore" (cp) ↔ "open pore" (op) transition of NU-1105 occurs at a propane pressure of ~3 bar. At 1 bar, NU-1105 is in its cp form and adsorbs less propane than it would in its op form, highlighting improved working capacity. In situ powder X-ray diffraction during propane sorption was used to track the cp ↔ op transition, and molecular modeling was used to elucidate the structure of the op and cp forms of NU-1105. According to TD-DFT calculations, the proposed conformations of the Py-FP linkers in the op and cp forms are consistent with the measured excitation and emission spectra of the op and cp forms of NU-1105. Similar structural transitions are also observed in the porphyrinic MOF NU-1104 depending on the identity of the porphyrin core; we observed breathing behavior if the constituent Por-PTP linker is nonmetalated. Metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) are known to facilitate energy-efficient separations of important industrial chemical feedstocks. Here, we report how a class of green MOFs--namely CD-MOFs--exhibits high shape selectivity toward aromatic hydrocarbons. CD-MOFs, which consist of an extended porous network of γ-cyclodextrins (γ-CDs) and alkali metal cations, can separate a wide range of benzenoid compounds as a result of their relative orientation and packing within the transverse channels formed from linking (γ-CD)6 body-centered cuboids in three dimensions. Adsorption isotherms and liquid-phase chromatographic measurements indicate a retention order of ortho- > meta- > para-xylene. The persistence of this regioselectivity is also observed during the liquid-phase chromatography of the ethyltoluene and cymene regioisomers. In addition, molecular shape-sorting within CD-MOFs facilitates the separation of the industrially relevant BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers) mixture. The high resolution and large separation factors exhibited by CD-MOFs for benzene and these alkylaromatics provide an efficient, reliable, and green alternative to current isolation protocols. Furthermore, the isolation of the regioisomers of (i) ethyltoluene and (ii) cymene, together with the purification of (iii) cumene from its major impurities (benzene, n-propylbenzene, and diisopropylbenzene) highlight the specificity of the shape selectivity exhibited by CD-MOFs. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and single component static vapor adsorption isotherms and kinetics reveal the origin of the shape selectivity and provide insight into the capability of CD-MOFs to serve as versatile separation platforms derived from renewable sources. An isoreticular series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the ftw topology based on zirconium oxoclusters and tetracarboxylate linkers with a planar core (NU-1101 through NU-1104) has been synthesized employing a linker expansion approach. In this series, NU-1103 has a pore volume of 2.91 cc g-1 and a geometrically calculated surface area of 5646 m² g-1, which is the highest value reported to date for a zirconium-based MOF and among the largest that have been reported for any porous material. Successful activation of the MOFs was proven based on the agreement of pore volumes and BET areas obtained from simulated and experimental isotherms. Critical for practical applications, NU-1103 combines for the first time ultrahigh surface area and water stability, where this material retained complete structural integrity after soaking in water. Pressure range selection for the BET calculations on these materials was guided by the four so-called "consistency criteria". The experimental BET area of NU-1103 was 6550 m² g-1. Insights obtained from molecular simulation suggest that, as a consequence of pore-filling contamination, the BET method overestimates the monolayer loading of NU-1103 by ~16%. Experimentally refinedcrystal structures for metal–organicframeworks (MOFs) often include solvent molecules and partially occupiedor disordered atoms. This creates a major impediment to applying high-throughputcomputational screening to MOFs. To address this problem, we haveconstructed a database of MOF structures that are derived from experimentaldata but are immediately suitable for molecular simulations. The computation-ready,experimental (CoRE) MOF database contains over 4700 porous structureswith publically available atomic coordinates. Important physical andchemical properties including the surface area and pore dimensionsare reported for these structures. To demonstrate the utility of thedatabase, we performed grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations ofmethane adsorption on all structures in the CoRE MOF database. Weinvestigated the structural properties of the CoRE MOFs that governmethane storage capacity and found that these relationships agreewell with those derived recently from a large database of hypotheticalMOFs. A metal–organic framework(MOF) with high volumetric deliverablecapacity for methane was synthesized after being identified by computationalscreening of 204 hypothetical MOF structures featuring (Zr6O4)(OH)4(CO2)ninorganicbuilding blocks. The predicted MOF (NU-800) has an fcutopology in which zirconium nodes are connected via ditopic1,4-benzenedipropynoic acid linkers. Based on our computer simulations,alkyne groups adjacent to the inorganic zirconium nodes provide moreefficient methane packing around the nodes at high pressures. Thehigh predicted gas uptake properties of this new MOF were confirmedby high-pressure isotherm measurements over a large temperature andpressure range. The measured methane deliverable capacity of NU-800between 65 and 5.8 bar is 167 cc(STP)/cc (0.215 g/g),the highest among zirconium-based MOFs. High-pressure uptake valuesof H2and CO2are also among the highest reported.These high gas uptake characteristics, along with the expected highlystable structure of NU-800, make it a promising materialfor gas storage applications.
