Data-driven machine learning techniques can be useful for the rapid evaluation of material properties in extreme environments, particularly in cases where direct access to the materials is not possible. Such problems occur in high-throughput material screening and material design approaches where many candidates may not be amenable to direct experimental examination. In this paper, we perform an exhaustive examination of the applicability of machine learning for the estimation of isothermal shock compression properties, specifically the shock Hugoniot, for diverse material systems. A comprehensive analysis is conducted where effects of scarce data, variances in source data, feature choices, and model choices are systematically explored. New modeling strategies are introduced based on feature engineering, including a feature augmentation approach, to mitigate the effects of scarce data. Cavitation bubbles can be generated by introducing ultrasonic waves into the liquid. The growth and collapse of the bubbles transfer energy from ultrasonic waves to the gas mixture, resulting in the formation of an extreme environment with local high pressure and temperature, and then, multiple products (H2, ·OH, H·, O, H2O2, and so on) are produced. In the present study, the sonochemical characteristics inside an oxygen bubble have been investigated by using single bubble dynamics equations taking mass transfer, heat exchange, and chemical reactions into account. The effects of the equilibrium radius and static pressure on the temperature and the yields of H2, ·OH, and total oxidants inside the bubble are analyzed. There are optimal equilibrium radii that maximize gas temperature and the amounts of H2, ·OH, and total oxidants under different static pressures. The results of this paper are in good agreement with the previous results and can be used to explain sonochemical phenomena observed in experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides an overview of the latest research developments in the design and exploration of ceramic coatings with high temperature adaptive behavior. The adaptive behavior, triggered by thermal or thermomechanical stimulus, may be used to create smart surfaces that are able to change their chemistry and structure to achieve the desired functionality. The initial focus of the paper will be to provide an overview on the basics of self-repairing materials. This will be followed by a brief outline of the work that has been reported on self-healing/adaptive mechanisms in bulk ceramics. We will then focus on providing a thorough review on self-healing ceramics with a focus on adaptation/healing in tribology as well as thermal barrier, anticorrosion, and oxidation resistant coatings. Advantages and disadvantages of using hybrid polymer-ceramic coatings will also be discussed toward the end of the article. This overview will provide a fundamental understanding of the changes in the structural and chemical properties of these materials and how that correlates to their performance. Understanding the interplay of strong-field QED and collective plasma effects is important for explaining extreme astrophysical environments like magnetars. It has been shown that QED pair plasma can be produced and observed by passing a relativistic electron beam through an intense laser field. This paper presents in detail multiple sets of 3D QED-particle-in-cell simulations to show the creation of pair plasma in the QED cascade. The beam driven method enables a high pair particle density and also a low particle Lorentz factor, which both play equal roles on exhibiting large collective plasma effects. Finite laser frequency upshift is observed with both ideal parameters (24 PW laser colliding with a 300 GeV electron beam) and with existing technologies (3 PW laser colliding with a 30 GeV electron beam). Deep learning-based fringe projection profilometry (FPP) shows potential for challenging three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of objects with dynamic motion, complex surface, and extreme environment. However, the previous deep learning-based methods are all supervised ones, which are difficult to be applied for scenes that are different from the training, thus requiring a large number of training datasets. In this paper, we propose a new geometric constraint-based phase unwrapping (GCPU) method that enables an untrained deep learning-based FPP for the first time. An untrained convolutional neural network is designed to achieve correct phase unwrapping through a network parameter space optimization. The loss function of the optimization is constructed by following the 3D, structural, and phase consistency. The designed untrained network directly outputs the desired fringe order with the inputted phase and fringe background. The experiments verify that the proposed GCPU method provides higher robustness compared with the traditional GCPU methods, thus resulting in accurate 3D reconstruction for objects with a complex surface. Unlike the commonly used temporal phase unwrapping, the proposed GCPU method does not require additional fringe patterns, which can also be used for the dynamic 3D measurement. Hydraulic system is widely used as a power source in deep-sea operation equipment. The sealing performance and the relative movement of the parts in hydraulic components are significantly affected by the structural deformation at the clearance fit and the viscosity increase of the hydraulic fluid medium, which are both caused by high seawater pressure. In this paper, the deformation formula at the clearance fit in the deep-sea environment is deduced, which indicates that the deformed height of the fit clearance decreases linearly in the axial direction. A minimum clearance design criterion is proposed, and it is found that the smaller the difference between the bulk modulus of the matching parts and the fit radius are, the smaller the variation of the height of the fit clearance is under various working conditions and the smaller the required minimum initial height is. The leakage flow rate formula at the clearance fit in the deep-sea environment is deduced as well, which introduces modified factors to consider the effects of structural deformation, viscosity increase, and eccentricity. The calculation result shows that under the condition of 11 000 m deep sea, the leakage flow rate calculated by the classic formula is about five times larger than that of the modified formula. Multi-parameter fluid–solid-interaction simulations are carried out to verify the correctness of the deduced deformation and leakage flow rate formulas. The emerging class of multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) processes superior mechanical properties and has great potential for applications in extreme environments. In this work, the synergic effect of the Cr content and crystallographic orientation on the deformation behaviors of single-crystal CrCoFeNi MPEAs has been investigated by atomistic simulations. We have found distinct differences in dislocation activities, deformation microstructures, and mechanical behaviors in the model MPEAs, which depend on crystallographic orientations, Cr concentration, and the number of activated slip systems. When multiple slip systems are triggered along [100] and [111] orientations, Shockley partial activation and their interaction are predominant, leading to the formation of sessile dislocations and a dense dislocation network. When only two slip systems of Shockley partials are favored along the [110] direction, the influence of Cr concentration and planner defect energies emerges. At low Cr concentration, the double planar slip of Shockley partials results in deformation-induced nanotwins. At high Cr concentration, the partial dislocations of a single slip plane become dominant, attaining the highest volume fraction of deformation-induced phase transformation. The results provide a fundamental understanding of deformation mechanisms in MPEAs, elucidating the synergic effect of crystal orientation and composition on tunning the mechanical behaviors. The stability of structural materials in extreme nuclear reactor environments—with high temperature, high radiation, and corrosive media—directly affects the lifespan of the reactor. In such extreme environments, an oxide layer on the metal surface acts as a passive layer protecting the metal underneath from corrosion. To predict the irradiation effect on the metal layer in these metal/oxide bilayers, nondestructive depth-resolved positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and complementary transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate small-scale defects created by ion irradiation in an epitaxially grown (100) Fe film capped with a 50 nm Fe2O3 oxide layer. In this study, the evolution of induced vacancies was monitored, from individual vacancy formation at low doses—10−5 dpa—to larger vacancy cluster formation at increasing doses, showing the sensitivity of positron annihilation spectroscopy technique. Furthermore, PALS measurements reveal how the presence of a metal–oxide interface modifies the distribution of point defects induced by irradiation. TEM measurements show that irradiation induced dislocations at the interface is the mechanism behind the redistribution of point defects causing their accumulation close to the interface. This work demonstrates that the passive oxide layers formed during corrosion impact the distribution and accumulation of radiation induced defects in the metal underneath and emphasizes that the synergistic impact of radiation and corrosion will differ from their individual impacts. Tantalum (Ta) is a metal that has useful properties that make it useful in extreme environments. It is, therefore, important to understand how Ta performs in such extreme conditions by accurately measuring its properties. In this work, the yield strength of tantalum has been measured at pressures up to 276 GPa using axial and radial x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods in diamond anvil cells (DACs). We measured strength using XRD in a radial DAC to 50 GPa, in an axial DAC to 60 GPa using diamonds with standard flat culets, and in a final experiment to 276 GPa using toroidal diamond anvils. The radial XRD data were refined using the Material Analysis Using Diffraction Rietveld software package to extract lattice strain and the yield strength. The axial data were refined using the General Structure Analysis System II and a linewidth method was used to calculate the yield strength. The yield strength measured near ambient pressure was found to be 0.5 GPa and increased with a pressure of up to 50 GPa, where the yield strength plateaued at a value of 2.4 GPa. At pressures above 60 GPa, the strength increased again to a maximum value of 9 GPa at the highest pressure of 276 GPa. The data from the three experiments show good agreement between the methods and previously reported experimental data. This agreement illustrates the value of axial diffraction data for material strength determination and allows for measurements at multi-hundreds of GPa using toroidal DACs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strong magnetic fields have a large impact on the dynamics of molecules. In addition to the changes in the electronic structure, the nuclei are exposed to the Lorentz force with the magnetic field being screened by the electrons. In this work, we explore these effects using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on an effective Hamiltonian calculated at the Hartree–Fock level of theory. To correctly include these non-conservative forces in the dynamics, we have designed a series of novel propagators that show both good efficiency and stability in test cases. As a first application, we analyze simulations of He and H2 at two field strengths characteristic of magnetic white dwarfs (0.1 B0 = 2.35 × 104 T and B0 = 2.35 × 105 T). While the He simulations clearly demonstrate the importance of electron screening of the Lorentz force in the dynamics, the extracted rovibrational spectra of H2 reveal a number of fascinating features not observed in the field-free case: couplings of rotations/vibrations with the cyclotron rotation, overtones with unusual selection rules, and hindered rotations that transmute into librations with increasing field strength. Laser-driven x-ray backlighting can be used to image fast dynamic processes like the propagation of laser-driven shock waves in matter. We demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of operating the JUNGFRAU detector designed by PSI, a direct detecting x-ray detector, in environments with extreme electromagnetic pulses. The electromagnetic pulse-protective housing is specifically designed for this detector and optimized for pump-probe experiments at the Petawatt High-Energy Laser for Heavy Ion EXperiments (PHELIX) facility at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH. The beryllium x-ray entrance window of the protective housing has a high x-ray transmission of 94% at 8 keV. Measurements have shown that the housing simultaneously provides a relative damping of the electromagnetic field on average higher than 1000 in the frequency range of 100 MHz to 5 GHz. The results demonstrate the feasibility of operating digital detectors in experiments where strong electromagnetic pulses are present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

β-Ga2O3 is a promising ultrawide bandgap semiconductor for high power and extreme environment applications. The dominant O—H center in Ga2O3 has been assigned to a Ga(1) vacancy–2H (VGa(1)-2H) complex. An analysis of the polarization dependence of the vibrational absorption of the VGa(1)-2D center in monoclinic β-Ga2O3 provides a unique strategy for the determination of both the orientation of the principal dielectric axes in the near infrared and the direction of the vibrational transition moment of the defect. We have developed nano/microscale thermal impulse (TI) (i.e., temperature and duration) sensors for use in extreme environments such as explosions, furnaces, and combustion experiments. These sensors consist of chemically bonded precursor Eu : ZrO 2 and precursor Dy : Y 2 O 3 , which are prepared via mixed coprecipitation. In this study, we demonstrate their functionality for subsecond pulsed laser heating (isothermal duration of ≈ 10 ms) up to 1773 K, with evidence suggesting functionality to even higher temperatures. This large range is due to the formation of a new mixed-material phase (similar to yttria-stabilized zirconia) that results in spectral features that are not seen in the component materials on their own. Novel engineering materials and structures are increasingly designed for use in severe environments involving extreme transient variations in temperature and loading rates, chemically reactive flows, and other conditions. The Texas A&M University Hypervelocity Impact Laboratory (HVIL) enables unique ultrahigh-rate materials characterization, testing, and modeling capabilities by tightly integrating expertise in high-rate materials behavior, computational and polymer chemistry, and multi-physics multiscale numerical algorithm development, validation, and implementation. The HVIL provides a high-throughput test bed for development and tailoring of novel materials and structures to mitigate hypervelocity impacts (HVIs). A conventional, 12.7 mm, smooth bore, two-stage light gas gun (2SLGG) is being used as the aeroballistic range launcher to accelerate single and simultaneously launched projectiles to velocities in the range 1.5–7.0 km/s. The aeroballistic range is combined with conventional and innovative experimental, diagnostic, and modeling capabilities to create a unique HVI and hypersonic test bed. Ultrahigh-speed imaging (10M fps), ultrahigh-speed schlieren imaging, multi-angle imaging, digital particle tracking, flash x-ray radiography, nondestructive/destructive inspection, optical and scanning electron microscopy, and other techniques are being used to characterize HVIs and study interactions between hypersonic projectiles and suspended aerosolized particles. Additionally, an overview of 65 2SLGG facilities operational worldwide since 1990 is provided, which is the most comprehensive survey published to date. The HVIL aims to (i) couple recent theoretical developments in shock physics with advances in numerical methods to perform HVI risk assessments of materials and structures, (ii) characterize environmental effects (water, ice, dust, etc.) on hypersonic vehicles, and (iii) address key high-rate materials and hypersonics research problems. Ultra-wide bandgap AlGaN has attracted recent attention as a promising channel material for next-generation high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) for RF power due to its high critical field, excellent transport properties, and potential for operation in extreme environments. However, the effects of temperature on the transport properties are not fully understood. Here, Al0.62Ga0.38N/Al0.45Ga0.55N HEMTs have been fabricated and characterized up to 150 °C at DC and RF to evaluate the effect of temperature on electron mobility and carrier velocity. Measured results indicate that both mobility and carrier velocity exhibit modest dependence on temperature, suggesting that AlGaN channel HEMTs are promising for future RF power applications. Thermoacoustic instability has been an important challenge in the development of high-performance combustion systems, as it can have catastrophic consequences. The process of a sudden change in the dynamical behavior of a thermoacoustic system from a low- to high-amplitude thermoacoustic instability actually entails as a tipping point phenomenon. It has been found that when rate-dependent parameters are considered, a tipping-delay phenomenon may arise, which helps in the control of undesirable states that give rise to thermoacoustic instabilities. This work aims at understanding rate-dependent tipping dynamics of the thermoacoustic system with both time-varying parameters and a non-Gaussian Lévy noise. The latter better describes the severe operating environment of such systems than simpler types of noise. Through numerical simulations, the tipping dynamical behavior is analyzed by considering the rate-dependent parameters coupled with the main parameters of the Lévy noise, including the stability and skewness indices and the noise intensity. In addition, we investigate the effectiveness of early warning indicators in rate-dependent systems under Lévy noise excitation and uncover a relationship between warning measures and the rate of change in the parameters. These results inform and enlighten the development and design of power combustion devices and also provide researchers and engineers with effective ideas to control thermoacoustic instability and the associated tipping dynamics. A design for an incident-beam collimator for the Paris–Edinburgh pressure cell is described here. This design can be fabricated from reaction-bonded B4C but also through fast turnaround, inexpensive 3D-printing. 3D-printing thereby also offers the opportunity of composite collimators whereby the tip closest to the sample can exhibit even better neutronic characteristics. Here, we characterize four such collimators: one from reaction-bonded B4C, one 3D-printed and fully infiltrated with cyanoacrylate, a glue, one with a glue-free tip, and one with a tip made from enriched 10B4C. The collimators are evaluated on the Spallation Neutrons and Pressure Diffractometer of the Spallation Neutron Source and the Wide-Angle Neutron Diffractometer at the High Flux Isotope Reactor, both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This work clearly shows that 3D-printed collimators perform well and also that composite collimators improve performance even further. Beyond use in the Paris–Edinburgh cell, these findings also open new avenues for collimator designs as clearly more complex shapes are possible through 3D printing. An example of such is shown here with a collimator made for single-crystal samples measured inside a diamond anvil cell. These developments are expected to be highly advantageous for future experimentation in high pressure and other extreme environments and even for the design and deployment of new neutron scattering instruments. We have developed the Sample Test Array and Recovery (STAR) platform for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) for studying the thermal and hydrodynamic responses of materials in extreme environments. The STAR platform expands the range of obtainable fluences and quadruples the rate that materials experiments can be conducted at the NIF. Example configurations are demonstrated for fluences spanning 0.56–34 J/cm2 with environmental isolation for post-shot material recovery and inspection and up to 1740 J/cm2 without isolation, with surface heating rates of up to 2 × 1014 K/s. A large volume cubic anvil press integrated with synchrotron energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction was employed to study the yielding behavior of powdered beta silicon carbide (SiC) under high pressure and high temperature conditions up to 7.4 GPa and 1400 °C. During compression and heating, the x-ray pattern was collected at each pressure–temperature point, and, then, via assessing the peak width of the x-ray diffraction pattern, the strains/stresses developed inside the sample under varied pressure–temperature conditions were determined. From the constitutive response of the sample as a function of pressure and temperature, we did not observe the yielding occurrence in SiC at cold compression. In contrast, high temperature induces a yielding at 1100 °C with a constant loading pressure of ∼7.4 GPa. By comparison, we found that this material is the most stable, compared with the other three strong ones (diamond, moissanite, and alfa silicon nitride), in terms of the yielding under high pressure and temperature conditions. Along with its much higher pressure and temperature requirements for phase transition and decomposition, SiC is a competent material for the development of novel tools/devices to be used in the harshly extreme working environment, such as deep drilling, high-speed cutting, and aerospace engineering. A set of new criteria for the diagnosis of the possible occurrence of a large blackout are constructed, using the output from a model for the dynamics of the electric power grid (the OPA model). The approach used is to look for maximum values of the Transfer Entropy between time series of the system variables and the time series of large blackouts.
