While storm identification and tracking algorithms are used both operationally and in research, there exists no single standard technique to objectively determine performance of such algorithms. Thus, a comparative skill score is developed herein that consists of four parameters, three of which constitute the quantification of storm attributes—size consistency, linearity of tracks, and mean track duration—and the fourth that correlates performance to an optimal postevent reanalysis. The skill score is a cumulative sum of each of the parameters normalized from zero to one among the compared algorithms, such that a maximum skill score of four can be obtained. The skill score is intended to favor algorithms that are efficient at severe storm detection, i.e., high-scoring algorithms should detect storms that have higher current or future severe threat and minimize detection of weaker, short-lived storms with low severe potential. The skill score is shown to be capable of successfully ranking a large number of algorithms, both between varying settings within the same base algorithm and between distinct base algorithms. Through a comparison with manually created user datasets, high-scoring algorithms are verified to match well with hand analyses, demonstrating appropriate calibration of skill score parameters. Significance Statement: With the growing number of options for storm identification and tracking techniques, it is necessary to devise an objective approach to quantify performance of different techniques. This study introduces a comparative skill score that assesses size consistency, linearity of tracks, mean track duration, and correlation to an optimal postevent reanalysis to rank diverse algorithms. This paper will show the capability of the skill score at highlighting algorithms that are efficient at detecting storms with higher severe potential, as well as those that closely resemble human-perceived storms through a comparison with manually created user datasets. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to mitigate the so-called blind range on radars that use pulse compression. It is well known that the blind range is caused by the strong leak through into the receiver during the transmission cycle. The proposed technique is called progressive pulse compression (PPC) and is based on partial decoding. PPC uses a portion of the uncontaminated received signal in conjunction with pulse compression to estimate the echoes from the incomplete signal. The technique does not require the use of a fill pulse or any hardware modifications. PPC can be divided into three steps. The first step is to discard all the received signals during the transmit cycle and apply a smooth taper for continuous transition from zero to one. The second step is to perform the pulse compression using matched filter. The combination of these two steps is equivalent to performing pulse compression using a progressively changing template to partially extract the uncontaminated received signal for compression. The third step is to compensate for the progressively changing template so that proper reflectivity values can be recovered. This technique has been tested on the PX-1000 and will be implemented on PX-10k in the near future. These two radars are designed and operated by the Advanced Radar Research Center at the University of Oklahoma and are both X-band software-defined solid-state systems. A robust and computationally efficient object tracking algorithm is developed by incorporating various tracking techniques. Physical properties of the objects, such as brightness temperature or reflectivity, are not considered. Therefore, the algorithm is adaptable for tracking convection-like features in simulated data and remotely sensed two-dimensional images. In this algorithm, a first guess of the motion, estimated using the Fourier phase shift, is used to predict the candidates for matching. A disparity score is computed for each target–candidate pair. The disparity also incorporates overlapping criteria in the case of large objects. Then the Hungarian method is applied to identify the best pairs by minimizing the global disparity. The high-disparity pairs are unmatched, and their target and candidate are declared expired and newly initiated objects, respectively. They are tested for merger and split on the basis of their size and overlap with the other objects. The sensitivity of track duration is shown for different disparity and size thresholds. The paper highlights the algorithm's ability to study convective life cycles using radar and simulated data over Darwin, Australia. The algorithm skillfully tracks individual convective cells (a few pixels in size) and large convective systems. The duration of tracks and cell size are found to be lognormally distributed over Darwin. The evolution of size and precipitation types of isolated convective cells is presented in the Lagrangian perspective. This algorithm is part of a vision for a modular platform [viz., TINT is not TITAN (TINT) and Tracking and Object-Based Analysis of Clouds (tobac)] that will evolve into a sustainable choice to analyze atmospheric features. Partial beam blockage (PBB) correction is an indispensable step in weather radar data quality control and subsequent quantitative applications, such as precipitation estimation, especially in urban and/or complex terrain environments. This paper developed a novel PBB correction procedure based on the improved ZPHI method for attenuation correction and regional specific differential propagation phase (KDP)–reflectivity (ZH) relationship derived from in situ raindrop size distribution (DSD) measurements. The practical performance of this PBB correction technique was evaluated through comparing the spatial continuity of reflectivity measurements, the consistency between radar-measured and DSD-derived KDP and ZH relationships, as well as rainfall estimates based on R(ZH) and R(KDP). The results showed that through incorporating attenuation and PBB corrections (i) the spatial continuity of ZH measurements can effectively be enhanced; (ii) the distribution of radar-measured KDP versus ZH is more consistent with the DSD-derived KDP versus ZH; (iii) the measured ZH from a C-band radar in the PBB-affected area becomes more consistent with collocated S-band measurements, particularly in the rainstorm center area where ZH is larger than 30 dBZ; and (iv) rainfall estimates based on R(ZH) in the PBB-affected area are incrementally improved with better spatial continuity and the performance tends to be more comparable with R(KDP). An assumption related to clouds is one of uncertain factors in precipitation retrievals by the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory. While an attenuation due to cloud ice is negligibly small for Ku and Ka bands, attenuation by cloud liquid water is larger in the Ka band and estimating precipitation intensity with high accuracy from Ka-band observations can require developing a method to estimate the attenuation due to cloud liquid water content (CLWC). This paper describes a CLWC database used in the DPR level-2 algorithm for the GPM V06A product. In the algorithm, the CLWC value is assumed using the database with inputs of precipitation-related variables, temperature, and geolocation information. A calculation of the database was made using the 3.5-km-mesh global atmospheric simulation derived from the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) global cloud-system-resolving model. Impacts of current CLWC assumptions for surface precipitation estimates were evaluated by comparisons of precipitation retrieval results between default values and 0 mg m−3 of the CLWC. The impacts were quantified by the normalized mean absolute difference (NMAD) and the NMAD values showed 2.3% for the Ku, 9.9% for the Ka, and 6.5% for the dual-frequency algorithms in global averages, while they were larger in the tropics than in high latitudes. Effects of the precipitation estimates from the CLWC assumption were examined further in terms of retrieval processes affected by the CLWC assumption. The Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere–Stratosphere–Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter (PANSY) radar is a large atmospheric radar located at the Antarctic Syowa Station (69.01°S, 39.59°E). The PANSY radar performed the first incoherent scatter (IS) measurements in the Antarctic region in 2015. Several specific observations were undertaken in 2017 including a 24-h observation of the ionosphere using a peripheral antenna array to suppress interference from the field-aligned irregularities (FAIs). This paper presents the preliminary results derived from the IS measurements using the PANSY radar and the adaptive signal processing techniques to suppress FAIs. The norm-constrained and directionally constrained minimization of power (NC-DCMP) algorithm was applied to the 24-h ionosphere observations by the PANSY radar with a weighting applied to the directional constraint based on the gain differences of the subarrays. When compared with the conventional nonadaptive approach, the number of usable power profiles was increased by about 24% by the gain-weighted NC-DCMP algorithm, suggesting its effectiveness for FAI clutter suppression in ionosphere observations. Furthermore, detection of FAIs using the dedicated antenna array was found valuable in assessing the reliability of estimations of electron density based on VHF-band IS radar data. Compared to traditional single-polarization radar, dual-polarization radar has a number of advantages for quantitative precipitation estimation because more information about the drop size distribution and hydrometeor type can be gleaned. In this paper, an improved dual-polarization rainfall methodology is proposed, which is driven by a region-based hydrometeor classification mechanism. The objective of this study is to incorporate the spatial coherence and self-aggregation of dual-polarization observables in hydrometeor classification and to produce robust rainfall estimates for operational applications. The S-band dual-polarization data collected from the NASA Polarimetric (NPOL) radar during the GPM Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) ground validation field campaign are used to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed rainfall algorithm. Results show that the improved rainfall method provides better performance than a few single- and dual-polarization algorithms in previous studies. This paper also investigates the impact of radar beam broadening on various rainfall algorithms. Hail-bearing storms produce substantial socioeconomic impacts each year, yet challenges remain in forecasting the type of hail threat supported by a given environment and in using radar to estimate hail sizes more accurately. One class of hail threat is storms producing large accumulations of small hail (SPLASH). This paper presents an analysis of the environments and polarimetric radar characteristics of such storms. Thirteen SPLASH events were selected to encompass a broad range of geographic regions and times of year. Rapid Refresh model output was used to characterize the mesoscale environments associated with each case. This analysis reveals that a range of environments can support SPLASH cases; however, some commonalities included large precipitable water (exceeding that day's climatological 90th-percentile values), CAPE < 2500 J kg−1, weak storm-relative wind speeds (<10 m s−1) in the lowest few kilometers of the troposphere, and a weak component of the storm-relative flow orthogonal to the 0–6-km shear vector. Most of the storms were weak supercells that featured distinctive S-band radar signatures, including compact (<200 km2) regions of reflectivity factor > 60 dBZ, significant differential attenuation evident as negative differential reflectivity extending downrange of the hail core, and anomalously large specific differential phase KDP. The KDP values often approached or exceeded the operational color scale's upper limit (10.7° km−1); reprocessing the level-II data revealed KDP >17° km−1, the highest documented in precipitation at S band. Electromagnetic scattering calculations using the T-matrix method confirm that large quantities of small melting hail mixed with heavy rain can plausibly explain the observed radar signatures. Raindrop size sorting is a ubiquitous microphysical occurrence in precipitating systems. Owing to the greater terminal fall speed of larger particles, a raindrop's fall trajectory can be sensitive to its size, and strong air currents (e.g., a convective updraft) can enhance this sensitivity. Indeed, observational and numerical model simulation studies have confirmed these effects on raindrop size distributions near convective updrafts. One striking example is the lofting of liquid drops and partially frozen hydrometeors above the environmental 0°C level, resulting in a small columnar region of positive differential reflectivity ZDR in polarimetric radar data, known as the ZDR column. This signature can serve as a proxy for updraft location and strength, offering operational forecasters a tool for monitoring convective trends. Beneath the 0°C level, where WSR-88D spatiotemporal resolution is highest, anomalously high ZDR collocated with lower reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization ZH is often observed within and beneath convective updrafts. Here, size sorting creates a deficit in small drops, while relatively large drops and melting hydrometeors are present in low concentrations. As such, this unique raindrop size distribution and its related polarimetric signature can indicate updraft location sooner and more frequently than the detection of a ZDR column. This paper introduces a novel algorithm that capitalizes on the improved radar coverage at lower levels and automates the detection of this size sorting signature. At the algorithm core, unique ZH–ZDR relationships are created for each radar elevation scan, and positive ZDR outliers (often indicative of size sorting) are identified. Uncertainties in aircraft inertial navigation system and radar-pointing angles can have a large impact on the accuracy of airborne dual-Doppler analyses. The Testud et al. (THL) method has been routinely applied to data collected by airborne tail Doppler radars over flat and nonmoving terrain. The navigation correction method proposed in Georgis et al. (GRH) extended the THL method over complex terrain and moving ocean surfaces by using a variational formulation but its capability over ocean has yet to be tested. Recognizing the limitations of the THL method, Bosart et al. (BLW) proposed to derive ground speed, tilt, and drift errors by statistically comparing aircraft in situ wind with dual-Doppler wind at the flight level. When combined with the THL method, the BLW method can retrieve all navigation errors accurately; however, it can be applied only to flat surfaces, and it is rather difficult to automate. This paper presents a generalized navigation correction method (GNCM) based on the GRH method that will serve as a single algorithm for airborne tail Doppler radar navigation correction for all possible surface conditions. The GNCM includes all possible corrections in the cost function and implements a new closure assumption by taking advantage of an accurate aircraft ground speed derived from GPS technology. The GNCM is tested extensively using synthetic airborne Doppler radar data with known navigation errors and published datasets from previous field campaigns. The CSU-CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X bands with coaxial beams. One of the capabilities of this radar system is the possibility of developing and/or validating algorithms across dual wavelengths and dual polarizations. This paper presents one such instance, showing how the rainfall field can be estimated either from the S- and X-band reflectivities or from the differential propagation phase at X band. To do so, the paper first presents a dual-wavelength attenuation correction method that uses the reflectivity measured at S band, as the constraint for the correction of the reflectivity measured at X band, and it describes how Mie scattering regions at X band may be detected from the retrieved path-integrated attenuation field. Then, the paper describes how the resulting specific attenuation field relates to rainfall and specific phase at X band, which can be obtained from dual-polarization data at a single wavelength as well, and shows examples. Finally, the paper looks at the relation between attenuation and the differential phase as a function of elevation angle for a few cases, which may be related to the drop size distribution and mean diameter, as well as temperature. Hydrometeor classification methods using polarimetric radar variables rely on probability density functions (PDFs) or membership functions derived empirically or by using electromagnetic scattering calculations. This paper describes an objective approach based on cluster analysis to deriving the PDFs. An iterative procedure with K-means clustering and expectation-maximization clustering based on Gaussian mixture models is developed to generate a series of prototypes for each hydrometeor type from several radar scans. The prototypes are then grouped together to produce a PDF for each hydrometeor type, which is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. The cluster-based method is applied to polarimetric radar data collected with the CP-2 S-band radar near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The results are illustrated and compared with theoretical classification boundaries in the literature. Some notable differences are found. Simulation of radar beam propagation is an important component of numerous radar applications in meteorology, including height assignment, quality control, and especially the so-called radar forward operator. Although beam propagation in the atmosphere depends on the refractive index and its vertical variation, which themselves depend on the actual state of the atmosphere, the most common method is to apply the 4/3 earth radius model, based on climatological standard conditions. Serious deviations from the climatological value can occur under so-called ducting conditions, where radar beams at low elevations can be trapped or propagate in a waveguide-like fashion, such that this model is unsuitable in this case. To account for the actual atmospheric conditions, sophisticated methods have been developed in literature. However, concerning the practical implementation of these methods, it was determined that the description in the literature is not always complete with respect to possible pitfalls for practical implementations. In this paper, a revised version of an existing method (one example for the above-mentioned 'pitfall' statement) is introduced that exploits Snell's law for spherically stratified media. From Snell's law, the correct sign of the local elevation is a priori ambiguous, and the revised method explicitly applies (i) a total reflection criterion and (ii) another ad hoc criterion to solve the problem. Additionally, a new method, based on an ordinary differential equation with respect to range, is proposed in this paper that has no ambiguity. Sensitivity experiments are conducted to investigate the properties of these three methods. The results show that both the revised and new methods are robust under nonstandard conditions. But considering the need to catch an elevation sign ambiguity in the revised method (which cannot be excluded to fail in rare instances), the new method is regarded as more robust and unproblematic, for example, for applications in radar forward operators. The radar network of the German Weather Service [Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)] provides 3D Doppler data in high spatial and temporal resolution, supporting the identification and tracking of dynamic small-scale weather phenomena. The software framework Polarimetric Radar Algorithms (POLARA) has been developed at DWD to better exploit the capabilities of the existing remote sensing data. The data processing and quality assurance implemented in POLARA include a dual-PRF dealiasing algorithm with error correction. Azimuthal shear information is derived and processed in the mesocyclone detection algorithm (MCD). Low- and midlevel azimuthal shear and track products are available as composite (multiradar) products. Azimuthal shear may be considered as a proxy for rotation. The MCD results and azimuthal shear products are part of the severe weather detection algorithms of DWD and are provided to the forecaster on the NinJo meteorological workstation system. The forecaster analyzes potentially severe cells by combining near-storm environment data with the MCD product as well as with the instantaneous azimuthal shear products (mid- and low level) and their tracks. These products and tracks are used to diagnose threat potential by means of azimuthal shear intensity and track longevity. Feedback from forecasters has shown the utility of the algorithms to analyze and diagnose severe convective cells in Germany and in adjacent Europe. Adaptive range oversampling processing can be used either to reduce the variance of radar-variable estimates without increasing scan times or to reduce scan times without increasing the variance of estimates. For example, an implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening on the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased-Array Radar (NWRT PAR) led to a twofold reduction in scan times. Conversely, a proposed implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening the U.S. Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network would reduce the variance of dual-polarization estimates while keeping current scan times. However, the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening is not compatible with radar-variable estimators for which an explicit variance expression is not readily available. One such nontraditional estimator is the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, which is currently used in the NEXRAD network. In this paper, an extension of adaptive pseudowhitening is proposed that utilizes lookup tables (rather than analytical solutions based on explicit variance expressions) to obtain range oversampling transformations. After describing this lookup table (LUT) adaptive pseudowhitening technique, its performance is compared to that of the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening using traditional radar-variable estimators. LUT adaptive pseudowhitening is then applied to the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, and simulation results are confirmed with a qualitative analysis of radar data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel method for the automatic determination of the diagonal-loading level for robust adaptive beamforming on radar wind profilers. This method balances the degradation of the signal-to-interference ratio with that of the signal-to-noise ratio to maximize the detectability of the backscattered signals. Because radial wind velocities are usually estimated from the first moment of the spectrum of backscattered echoes, both the residual ground clutter and any increase in noise level degrade the detectability of atmospheric echoes. The proposed algorithm evaluates the power spectral density of the residual clutter and increased noise to determine the optimal diagonal-loading level by balancing these two factors. The results of numerical simulation show that, without the need to specify any user parameters, the proposed algorithm is stable and more effective at maximizing the signal-to-interference ratio than the conventional norm-constrained diagonal-loading approach. The stability and clutter suppression capability of the proposed algorithm are examined using data from the Program of the Antarctic Syowa Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere/Incoherent Scatter Radar. The U.S. Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network has provided meteorologists and hydrologists with quantitative precipitation observations at an unprecedented high spatial-temporal resolution since its deployment in the mid-1990s. Since each single radar can only cover a maximum range of 460 km, a mosaic of multiple-radar observations is needed to generate any national-scale products. The Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system utilizes a physically based two-dimensional mosaicking algorithm of the WSR-88D data to generate seamless national quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products. For areas covered by multiple radars, the mosaicking scheme first determines if precipitation is present by checking the lowest-altitude observation. If the lowest observed radar data indicate no precipitation, then the mosaicked value is set to no precipitation. Otherwise, a weighted mean of multiple-radar observations is taken as the mosaicked value. The weighting function is based on multiple factors, including the distance from the radar and the height of the observation with respect to the melting layer. The mosaic algorithm uses the physically lowest radar observations with no/little blockage while maintaining a spatial continuity in the mosaicked field. The performance of the MRMS seamless radar mosaic algorithm was examined for various precipitation events of different characteristics. This paper presents an adaptive scan strategy concept for phased array weather radars (PAWR) with the objective of increasing the scan speed and capturing features of the storm system while maintaining the measurement accuracy. The adaptive scan strategy is developed based on the space-time variability of the storm under observation. Quickly evolving regions are scanned more often and the spatial sampling resolution is matched to the spatial scale. A model that includes the interaction between space and time is used to extract spatial and temporal scales of the medium and to define scanning regions. The temporal scale constrains the radar revisit time, while the measurement accuracy controls the radar's dwell time. These conditions are employed in a task scheduler that works on a ray-by-ray basis and is designed to balance task priority and radar resources. The scheduler algorithm also includes an optimization procedure for minimizing radar scan time. The model and the scan strategy are demonstrated using simulation data. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory has reflectivity measurements at two different frequencies: Ku and Ka bands. The dual-frequency ratio from the measurements has been used to perform rain type classification and microphysics retrieval in the current DPR level 2 algorithm. The dual-frequency classification module is a new module in the GPM level 2 algorithm. The module performs rain type classification and melting region detection using the vertical profile of the dual-frequency ratio. This paper presents an evaluation of the performance of the GPM dual-frequency classification module after launch. The evaluation process includes a comparison between the dual-frequency classification results and the TRMM legacy single-frequency results, as well as validation with ground radars. This paper presents a novel, simple method to correct reflectivity measurements of weather radars that operate in attenuation-influenced frequency bands using observations from less attenuated radar systems. In recent years radar systems operating in the X-band frequency range have been developed to provide precipitation fields for areas of special interest in high temporal (≤1 min) and spatial (≤250 m) resolution in complement to nationwide radar networks. However, X-band radars are highly influenced by attenuation. C- and S-band radars typically have coarser resolution (250 m-1 km and 5 min) but are less affected by attenuation. Correcting for attenuation effects in simple (non-Doppler) single-polarized X-band radars remains challenging and is often dependent on restriction parameters, for example, those derived from mountain returns. Therefore, these algorithms are applicable only in limited areas. The method proposed here uses measurements from C-band radars and hence can be applied in all regions covered by nationwide C- (or S-) band radar networks. First, a single scan of X-band radar measurements is used exemplary to identify advantages and disadvantages of the novel algorithm compared to a standard single radar algorithm. The performance of the correction algorithms in different types of precipitation is examined in nine case studies. The proposed method provides very promising results for each type of precipitation. Additionally, it is evaluated in a 5-month comparison with Micro Rain Radar (MRR) observations. The bias between uncorrected X-band radar and MRR data is nearly eliminated by the attenuation correction algorithm, and the RMSE is reduced by 20% while the correlation of ~0.9 between both systems remains nearly constant. In this paper, the operational Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission combined radar-radiometer algorithm is thoroughly described. The operational combined algorithm is designed to reduce uncertainties in GPM Core Observatory precipitation estimates by effectively integrating complementary information from the GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) and the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) into an optimal, physically consistent precipitation product. Although similar in many respects to previously developed combined algorithms, the GPM combined algorithm has several unique features that are specifically designed to meet the GPM objectives of deriving, based on GPM Core Observatory information, accurate and physically consistent precipitation estimates from multiple spaceborne instruments, and ancillary environmental data from reanalyses. The algorithm features an optimal estimation framework based on a statistical formulation of the Gauss-Newton method, a parameterization for the nonuniform distribution of precipitation within the radar fields of view, a methodology to detect and account for multiple scattering in Ka-band DPR observations, and a statistical deconvolution technique that allows for an efficient sequential incorporation of radiometer information into DPR precipitation retrievals. By fitting a parametric vortex model directly to aliased radar radial velocities scanned from a hurricane, the maximum tangential velocity and its radial distance from the hurricane vortex center can be estimated by the recently developed alias-robust vortex analysis. This vortex analysis can be refined to produce a suitable reference radial velocity field on each tilt of a radar scan for the reference check in the first main step of dealiasing. This paper presents the techniques developed for the refinements and shows how and to what extent the refined vortex analysis can improve the reference check and thus enhance the dealiased data coverage, especially over severely aliased data areas around the vortex core of a hurricane or typhoon. In addition, stringent threshold conditions are used in the reference check and the subsequent continuity check to ensure the accepted data are free of alias or almost so. The robustness and improved performance of the method are exemplified by the results tested with severely aliased radial velocities scanned by operational WSR-88D radars from hurricanes in the United States and by operational China New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD) base data format SA radars from typhoons in China. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) algorithms consist of modules. This paper describes version 4 (V4) of GPM DPR level 2 (L2) classification (CSF) modules, which consist of two single-frequency (SF) modules-that is, Ku-only and Ka-only modules-and a dual-frequency (DF) module. Each CSF module detects bright band (BB) and classifies rain into three major types, that is, stratiform, convective, and other. The Ku-only and Ka-only CSF modules use algorithms that are similar to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain type classification algorithm 2A23. The DF CSF module uses a new method called the measured dual-frequency ratio (DFRm) method for the rain type classification and the detection of BB. It is shown that the Ku-only CSF module and the DF CSF module produce almost indistinguishable rain type counts in a statistical sense. This paper outlines an approach for estimating latent heating, surface rainfall rate, and liquid water path in warm rain from downward-viewing W-band radar observations using a Bayesian Monte Carlo algorithm. The algorithm utilizes observed vertical and path-integrated characteristics of precipitating liquid clouds to identify the most appropriate hydrometeor and latent heating structures in a large database of profiles generated using a cloud-resolving model. These characteristics are selected by applying multiple performance metrics to synthetic retrievals. Analysis of the retrievals suggests that a combination of cloud-top, rain-top, and maximum reflectivity heights; vertically integrated reflectivity and attenuation; and a measure of near-surface intensity is sufficient to constrain bulk properties and the vertical structure of warm rain systems. When applied to observations at CloudSat resolution, biases in retrieved liquid water path and surface rainfall rate are small (less than 10%). The algorithm also captures the vertical structure of latent heating, although the magnitudes of integrated heating and cooling exhibit nearly compensating low biases. Random errors are larger owing to the limitations of single-frequency radar observations in constraining drop size distributions. Uncertainties in the altitudes of peak heating and cooling at the pixel scale are typically less than one vertical level, while uncertainties in vertically resolved estimates of heating and cooling rates are on the order of a factor of 2. The utility of the technique is illustrated through application to case studies from airborne radar data from the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study field campaign and satellite observations from CloudSat. This study is the third part of a paper series investigating the polarimetric radar properties of melting hail and application of those properties for operational polarimetric hail detection and determination of its size. The results of theoretical simulations in Part I were used to develop a hail size discrimination algorithm (HSDA) described in Part II. The HSDA uses radar reflectivity Z, differential reflectivity ZDR, and cross-correlation coefficient ρhv along with melting-level height within a fuzzy-logic scheme to distinguish among three hail size classes: small hail (with diameter D < 2.5 cm), large hail (2.5 < D < 5.0 cm), and giant hail ( D > 5.0 cm). The HSDA validation is performed using radar data collected by numerous WSR-88D sites and more than 3000 surface hail reports obtained from the Severe Hazards Analysis and Verification Experiment (SHAVE). The original HSDA version was modified in the process of validation, and the modified algorithm demonstrates probability of detection of 0.594, false-alarm ratio of 0.136, and resulting critical success index (CSI) equal to 0.543. The HSDA outperformed the current operational single-polarization hail detection algorithm, which only provides a single hail size estimate per storm and is characterized by CSI equal to 0.324. It is shown that HSDA is particularly sensitive to the quality of ZDR measurements, which might be affected by possible radar miscalibration and anomalously high differential attenuation. A raindrop size distribution (DSD) retrieval method for a weather radar network consisting of several X-band dual-polarization radars is proposed. An iterative maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for DSD retrieval in a single radar was developed in the authors' previous work, and the proposed algorithm in this paper extends the single-radar retrieval to radar-networked retrieval, where ML solutions in each single-radar node are integrated based on a Bayesian scheme in order to reduce estimation errors and to enhance accuracy. Statistical evaluations of the proposed algorithm were carried out using numerical simulations. The results with eight radar nodes showed that the bias and standard errors are −0.05 and 0.09 in log( N w); and N w (mm−1 m−3) and 0.04 and 0.09 in D0 (mm) in an environment with fluctuations in dual-polarization radar measurements (normal distributions with standard deviations of 0.8 dB Z, 0.2 dB, and 1.5° in ZHm, ZDRm, and ΦDPm, respectively). Further error analyses indicated that the estimation accuracy depended on the number of radar nodes, the ranges of varying μ, the raindrop axis ratio model, and the system bias errors in dual-polarization radar measurements. Two new algorithms for hydrometeor classification using polarimetric radar observations are developed based on prototypes derived by applying clustering techniques (Part I of this two-part paper). Each prototype is defined as a probability distribution of the polarimetric variables and ambient temperature corresponding to a hydrometeor type. The first algorithm is a maximum prototype likelihood classifier that uses all prototypes attributed to the different hydrometeor types in Part I. The hydrometeor type is assigned as the prototype with the highest likelihood when comparing the polarimetric variables and temperature with each prototype. The second algorithm is a Bayesian classifier that uses the probability density functions (PDFs) as derived from the prototype set associated with the identical hydrometeor type. The posteriori probability in the Bayesian method is calculated from a combination of the PDFs and the prior probability, the maximum of which corresponds to the most likely hydrometeor type. The respective merits of the two techniques are discussed. The two classifiers are applied to CP-2 S-band radar observations of two hailstorms that occurred between 16 and 20 November 2008, including the so-called Gap storm, which produced a devastating microburst and large hail at the ground. Results from the classifiers are compared with those derived using the well-established National Center for Atmospheric Research fuzzy logic classifier. In general, good agreement is found, yielding overall confidence in the robustness of the new classifiers. Observations and recent high-resolution numerical model simulations indicate that liquid water and partially frozen hydrometeors can be lofted considerably above the environmental 0°C level in the updrafts of convective storms owing to the warm thermal perturbation from latent heating within the updraft and to the noninstantaneous nature of drop freezing. Consequently, upward extensions of positive differential reflectivity (i.e., ZDR ≥ 1 dB)-called ZDR columns-may be a useful proxy for detecting the initiation of new convective storms and examining the evolution of convective storm updrafts. High-resolution numerical simulations with spectral bin microphysics and a polarimetric forward operator reveal a strong spatial association between updrafts and ZDR columns and show the utility of examining the structure and evolution of ZDR columns for assessing updraft evolution. This paper introduces an automated ZDR column algorithm designed to provide additional diagnostic and prognostic information pertinent to convective storm nowcasting. Although suboptimal vertical resolution above the 0°C level and limitations imposed by commonly used scanning strategies in the operational WSR-88D network can complicate ZDR column detection, examples provided herein show that the algorithm can provide operational and research-focused meteorologists with valuable information about the evolution of convective storms. A heavy rainfall event over a 2-h period on 8 July 2013 caused significant flash flooding in the city of Toronto and produced 126 mm of rain accumulation at a gauge located near the Toronto Pearson International Airport. This paper evaluates the quantitative precipitation estimates from the nearby King City C-band dual-polarized radar (WKR). Horizontal reflectivity Z and differential reflectivity ZDR were corrected for attenuation using a modified ZPHI rain profiling algorithm, and rain rates R were calculated from R( Z) and R( Z, ZDR) algorithms. Specific differential phase KDP was used to compute rain rates from three R( KDP) algorithms, one modified to use positive and negative KDP, and an R( KDP, ZDR) algorithm. Additionally, specific attenuation at horizontal polarization A was used to calculate rates from the R( A) algorithm. High-temporal-resolution rain gauge data at 44 locations measured the surface rainfall every 5 min and produced total rainfall accumulations over the affected area. The nearby NEXRAD S-band dual-polarized radar at Buffalo, New York, provided rain-rate and storm accumulation estimates from R( Z) and S-band dual-polarimetric algorithm. These two datasets were used as references to evaluate the C-band estimates. Significant radome attenuation at WKR overshadowed the attenuation correction techniques and resulted in poor rainfall estimates from the R( Z) and R( Z, ZDR) algorithms. Rainfall estimation from the Brandes et al. R( KDP) and R( A) algorithms were superior to the other methods, and the derived storm total accumulation gave biases of 2.1 and −6.1 mm, respectively, with correlations of 0.94. This paper presents a procedure to filter ground clutter from dual-polarized staggered pulse repetition time (PRT) radar data in simultaneous and alternating transmission modes for polarimetric variables retrieval. The filter is designed in the time domain so that polarimetric variables such as the differential phase () and the copolar correlation coefficient () can be estimated directly from clutter-filtered time series data using a conventional method. In the case of the simultaneous mode, a single filter is used for both channels to maintain the signal correlation after filtering. For the alternating mode, because the polarizations are transmitted in different waveforms, two separate filters are required. However, the filters are designed so that the responses of the filters to the signals are identical within the extended Doppler range. Based on radar simulation, it is shown that the method can provide accurate retrieval of polarimetric variables even in the case of strong clutter contamination. Although existing algorithms for storm tracking have been designed to operate in real time, they are also commonly used to do postevent data analysis and research. Real-time algorithms cannot use information on the subsequent positions of a storm because it is not available at the time that associations between frames are made, but postevent analysis is not similarly constrained. Therefore, it should be possible to obtain better tracks for postevent analysis than those that a real-time algorithm is capable of producing. In this paper, a statistical procedure for determining storm tracks from a set of identified storm cells over time is described. Although satellite precipitation estimates provide valuable information for weather and flood forecasts, infrared (IR) brightness temperature (BT)-based algorithms often produce large errors for precipitation detection and estimation during deep convective systems (DCSs). As DCSs produce greatly varying precipitation rates below similar IR BT retrievals, using IR BTs alone to estimate precipitation in DCSs is problematic. Classifying a DCS into convective-core (CC), stratiform (SR), and anvil cloud (AC) regions allows an evaluation of estimated precipitation distributions among DCS components to supplement typical quantitative precipitation estimate (QPE) evaluations and to diagnose these IR-based algorithm biases. This paper assesses the performance of the National Mosaic and Multi-Sensor Next Generation Quantitative Precipitation Estimation System (NMQ Q2), and a simplified version of the Self-Calibrating Multivariate Precipitation Retrieval (SCaMPR) algorithm, over the state of Oklahoma using Oklahoma Mesonet observations. While average annual Q2 precipitation estimates were about 35% higher than Mesonet observations, strong correlations exist between these two datasets for multiple temporal and spatial scales. Additionally, the Q2-estimated precipitation distribution among DCS components strongly resembled the Mesonet-observed distribution, indicating Q2 can accurately capture the precipitation characteristics of DCSs despite its wet bias. SCaMPR retrievals were typically 3-4 times higher than Mesonet observations, with relatively weak correlations during 2012. Overestimates from SCaMPR retrievals were primarily caused by precipitation retrievals from the anvil regions of DCSs when collocated Mesonet stations recorded no precipitation. A modified SCaMPR retrieval algorithm, employing both cloud optical depth and IR temperature, has the potential to make significant improvements to reduce the wet bias of SCaMPR retrievals over anvil regions of a DCS. The use of low-power solid-state transmitters in weather radar to keep costs down requires a pulse compression technique that maintains an adequate minimum detectable signal. However, wideband pulse compression filters will partly reduce the system's sensitivity performance. In this paper, a sensitivity enhancement system (SES) for pulse compression weather radar is developed to mitigate this issue. SES uses a dual-waveform transmission scheme and an adaptive pulse compression filter. The waveforms' diversity can be done in the frequency domain or the time domain. The adaptive filter is designed based on the self-consistency between signal returns from the two waveforms. Analysis based on radar-simulated data and observations from NASA's dual-frequency dual-polarized Doppler radar (D3R) shows that by using SES, the system sensitivity can be improved by 7-10 dB when compared to that of the conventional matched filter. Strong meteor trail echoes are interferences in the wind velocity estimates made from mesosphere radar observations. Contaminated spectra are detected by their discontinuity and are removed at the risk of greater fluctuations of spectra, leading to a severe reduction of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and inaccurate wind estimates for weak atmospheric echoes. This paper presents an adaptive signal processing technique for the suppression of spectral contaminations by meteor trail echoes. The method is based on the norm-constrained and directionally constrained minimization of power (NC-DCMP), which balances the capability of canceling the clutter and the robustness of beam shaping, at the cost of a slight decrease in the SNR, which can be determined in advance. Simulation results show that with a 3-dB decrease of the SNR being allowed, the method improves the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) by 15 dB, giving wind estimates that are about 8 m s−1 better in terms of root-mean-square error and providing 4 times as wide an observable range when compared with the results of the ordinary nonadaptive beamforming method. The results for an actual observation show that the improvement of both the SIR and the observable range are achieved as in the simulations, which implies that the method should provide the simulated accuracy for the estimation of wind velocity from actual observations. One way to reduce the variance of meteorological-variable estimates on weather radars without increasing dwell times is by using range oversampling techniques. Such techniques could significantly improve the estimation of polarimetric variables, which typically require longer dwell times to achieve the desired data quality compared to the single-polarization spectral moments. In this paper, an efficient implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening that was developed for single-polarization radars is extended for dual polarization. Adaptive pseudowhitening maintains the performance of pure whitening at high signal-to-noise ratios and equals or outperforms the digital matched filter at low signal-to-noise ratios. This approach results in improvements for polarimetric-variable estimates that are consistent with the improvements for spectral-moment estimates described in previous work. The performance of the proposed technique is quantified using simulations that show that the variance of polarimetric-variable estimates can be reduced without modifying the scanning strategies.
