The unique characteristics of land–air coupling and troposphere–stratosphere interaction over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the highest landform in the world, play a vital role in weather and climate on regional and global scales. Although a great deal of research has been carried out, large gaps remain in our understanding of TP land–air coupling and its climate effects, due to a lack of observations and the issue of model biases. To address these obstacles, a 10-yr national research program entitled "Changes in the Land–Air Coupled System over the Tibetan Plateau and its Impacts on Global Climate (LASTPIC)" was launched by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in January 2014. What LASTPIC does revolves around three aspects: TP land–air coupled processes; TP's influence on global climate; and reanalysis and model. This paper mainly focuses on the data collection, scientific understanding, and model development of LASTPIC in terms of TP land–atmosphere–ocean coupling and its global climate impacts since program's inception. The westerly jet (WJ) is an important component of atmospheric circulation, which is characterized by prominent seasonal variations in intensity and position. However, the response of the WJ over Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is still not clear. Using general circulation model experiments, the seasonal behaviors of the WJ over central Asia and Japan are analyzed in this paper. The results show that, compared to the present day (PD), the WJ presents a complicated response during the LGM, both in intensity and position. Over central Asia, it becomes weaker in both summer and winter. But over Japan, it is enhanced in summer but becomes diminished in winter. In terms of position, the WJ over central Asia shifts southward in both summer and winter, whereas the WJ over Japan moves southward in summer but does not change obviously relative to PD in winter. Such WJ changes are well explained by meridional temperature gradients in high troposphere, which is closely linked to seasonal thermal anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Despite cooler LGM conditions, the anomalous warming center over the TP becomes stronger in summer. Derived from the heat budget equation, the stronger heating center is mainly caused by the weaker adiabatic cooling generated from ascending motion over the area south of the TP. In winter, the cooling over the TP is also strengthened, mostly owing to the subsidence-induced weaker adiabatic heating. Earth's surface warming by external forcing depends on location. Warming amplification, or greater surface warming than the global average, occurs in the Arctic and high-elevation regions, including the Tibetan Plateau (TP). We examined the major drivers of TP warming amplification in recent decades (1979–2020) and under future climate scenarios (2061–2100) by applying local energy budget diagnosis of multiple radiative kernels based on state-of-the-art reanalysis datasets and coupled model simulations. From 1979 to 2020, both the snow–albedo feedback and cloud–radiation feedback strongly affected the seasonality of TP warming (summer vs winter). Snow cover and albedo decreased significantly in winter but showed only small changes in summer. TP total and low-level cloud cover increased in summer, causing cooling, and decreased in winter, causing warming. During winter, TP warming amplification (1.84 from 1979 to 2020) is weaker than Arctic amplification (3.64) because the positive contribution of the surface albedo feedback to TP warming is not as strong as the dual warming effects of the lapse rate feedback and surface heat flux observed in the Arctic. Our attribution analyses based on the preindustrial control (piControl) and Historical simulations of phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project confirmed that TP warming is caused by external forcing. Because the external forcing associated with anthropogenic activity is increasing, TP warming will continue to the end of the twenty-first century. Under likely future warming scenarios, winter TP warming amplification is still less than in the Arctic due to the effects of the lapse rate feedback and surface heat flux. Significance Statement: Over the Tibetan Plateau, warming amplification, which refers to greater surface warming than the global average (∼75% more warming than the global average from 1979 to 2020), has resulted in melting permafrost, retreating glaciers, and decreasing biodiversity. This study quantified the relative effects of eight physical processes on the warming amplification over the Tibetan Plateau. In the boreal winter, the reduction in snow cover and albedo are the leading contributors (about 49%) to Tibetan Plateau warming, meaning that melting snow exposes darker ground that absorbs more sunlight than snow does. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) exerts strong powerful thermal forcing, which plays a vital role in influencing weather–climate variations in Asia and even the Northern Hemisphere. However, the causes of thermal variation over the TP have not been fully revealed. Here, the role of winter soil moisture (SM) in subsequent summer thermal anomalies on the TP was investigated through multisource datasets for the period 1979–2014. Results indicate a significant positive relationship (r = 0.52) between winter SM and subsequent summer-mean surface air temperature (SAT). Further investigations show that more (less) winter SM results in abundant (deficient) atmospheric water vapor in subsequent summer owing to its persistence. Furthermore, Earth’s surface energy budget equation confirms that strengthened (weakened) surface downward longwave radiation caused by increased (decreased) water vapor is the dominant factor leading to SAT variations, even more significant for nocturnal SAT. The winter SM–atmospheric temperature positive relationship can extend from the surface to 200 hPa over the TP. In addition, the enhanced (weakened) atmospheric latent heat release associated with increased (decreased) water vapor content may be another important factor contributing to changes in atmospheric temperatures over the TP. Therefore, our results contribute to a better understanding of the effect of land–surface processes on thermal anomalies over the TP. Significance Statement Understanding the causes of thermal anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is crucial for weather and climate variations, but the role of winter soil moisture (SM) in subsequent summer thermal effects is largely unknown. Unstable hydrological cycles and water resource instability over and around the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are topics of wide concern. The Indian summer monsoon (ISM) is one of the TP's most important moisture sources; as such, its behavior is key to any changes in precipitation and water-related environments. However, there have been relatively few thorough investigations into ISM activities. Here we primarily explore ISM activities using outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) datasets in TP, and precipitation isotopes recorded at Lhasa, for the period 1975–2020. Our major findings are that 1) the ISM onset (retreat date) is between ∼31 May and 19 July (∼8 August–27 September), with ISM duration of ∼40–110 days; 2) significant spatial inhomogeneous patterns are evident in ISM activities, i.e., the western part of our study area experiences earlier ISM onset, delayed retreat, longer duration, and greater intensity and strength, and the inverse is true in the eastern sector of the study area; 3) the ISM activities that dominate the 1975–98 period determine their general patterns over the entire 1975–2020 period, taking into account evident discrepancies in subperiods; and 4) the negative relations between precipitation δ18O and ISM intensity/strength at Lhasa confirm the ISM activities defined using OLR. These results will improve our understanding of hydrological cycles in TP and provide insights into hydrological studies in the "Asian Water Tower" region. The Tibetan Plateau is a sensitive area of global climate change, where few conventional observations exist. Satellite AMSU-A microwave temperature sounding observations of brightness temperature (TB) are located in the absorption band of oxygen, which is well mixed in the atmosphere, and have microwave frequencies varying from 50.3 to 57.6 GHz. Therefore, AMSU-A TB observations at different sounding channels reflect atmospheric temperatures at different altitudes. In this study, AMSU-A TB observations during 1998-2020 from five polar-orbiting environmental meteorological satellites (POESs) are employed to investigate the interdecadal warming/cooling trends over the Tibetan Plateau. A limb correction is first applied to all AMSU-A channels before using TB observations at all fields of view for examining geographic distributions and differences of global warming/cooling trends. It is found that interdecadal trends of uppertropospheric warming and stratospheric cooling are stronger over the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau than its eastern plain areas. An interdecadal variation of the annual cycle over the Tibetan Plateau is an important factor for the enhanced tropospheric warming trend. We also applied a different approach of significance testing that is based on counting signs of local trends (sign test) and confirmed that the detected significant local trends were not a result of chance. In addition, high-frequency noise in TB observations with periods smaller than annual and semiannual oscillations do not affect the climate trends of TB very much, but significantly reduced the uncertainty of the TB trends over the Tibetan Plateau. Coupled climate models project robust wintertime wetting trend over midlatitude East Asia under global warming scenarios, but the projected change in precipitation shows large intermodel uncertainty over subtropical East Asia from southern China to southwestern Japan. Based on an ensemble of climate models participating in CMIP6, this study shows that the weakened southern branch westerly jet (SWJ) on the southern side of Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a key role in suppressing subtropical East Asian precipitation. The SWJ is deflected into southwesterly wind on the southeastern side of TP, bringing ascent and precipitation to subtropical East Asia primarily through isentropic gliding. As a result of the poleward and upward shift of the planetary-scale westerly jet under global warming, the SWJ becomes weaker and it acts to suppress subtropical East Asian precipitation by weakening the southwesterly wind and ascent. The SWJ-precipitation linkage also exists on interannual time scales, but the sensitivity of precipitation to interannual SWJ variability is systematically underestimated by the models compared with observation. The combined effects of the change in SWJ strength and the sensitivity of precipitation to SWJ explain about 40% of the intermodel spread of the projected precipitation changes. Observational constraint on the SWJ--precipitation relationship amplifies the projected drying trend and narrows the intermodel spread. It shows that the regional-averaged precipitation over subtropical East Asia decreases by 3.3% per degree of warming, and the amplitude of precipitation reduction over subtropical East Asia (southern China) is about 1.4 (3.4) times the raw projection. Long-term variabilities in daily precipitation and temperature are critical for assessing the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. We characterized intra- and interannual variabilities in daily precipitation and temperature obtained from 1960 to 2015 at 78 meteorological stations on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The results show the following. 1) the intra-annual variability of daily precipitation increases for 55 meteorological stations with a rate of 0.08 mm decade−1. In contrast, the intra-annual variability markedly decreases for daily mean, daytime mean, and nighttime mean temperatures with a rate of 0.09°, 0.07°, and 0.12°C decade−1, respectively, at 90% or more of stations. 2) Variabilities of daily precipitation and temperatures are very sensitive to high altitudes (>3500 m). The intra- and interannual variabilities of daily precipitation significantly decrease at 1.0 and 0.07 mm (1000 m)−1, respectively. However, variations of high altitudes increase the intra- and interannual variabilities of daily mean temperature at 1.0° and 0.2°C (1000 m)−1, respectively. Moreover, the interannual variability of nighttime mean temperature varies at 0.3°C (1000 m)−1, the fastest rate among three temperature indices. 3) A larger mean annual precipitation is accompanied by a higher intra- and interannual variability of daily precipitation on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau; however, a higher mean annual temperature leads to lower variabilities of daily temperatures. This study illustrates that long-term climatic variability is understudied in alpine ecosystems characterized by high climatic sensitivity. Coupled climate system models consistently show that the low-level southerly wind associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is enhanced under anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing, and the enhanced EASM was attributed to the enhanced land–sea thermal contrast by previous studies. Based on a comparison of the global warming scenarios with the present-day climate in an ensemble of 30 coupled models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), we show evidence that changes in land–sea thermal contrast cannot explain the enhanced EASM circulation in terms of the seasonality. Indeed, the enhanced low-level southerly wind over East Asia is associated with a large-scale anomalous cyclone around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), and numerical simulation by the Linear Baroclinic Model suggests that the enhanced latent heating over the TP associated with enhanced precipitation is responsible for this low-level cyclone anomaly and the enhanced EASM circulation projected by the coupled models. Moisture budget analysis shows that enhanced hydrological recycling and enhanced vertical moisture advection due to increased specific humidity have the largest contribution to the increased precipitation over the TP, and more than half of the intermodel uncertainty in the projected change of EASM circulation is associated with the uncertainty in the changes of precipitation over the TP. Large volcanic eruptions may cause abrupt summer cooling over large parts of the globe. However, no comparable imprint has been found on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Here, we introduce a 400-yr-long temperature-sensitive network of 17 tree-ring maximum latewood density sites from the TP that demonstrates that the effects of tropical eruptions on the TP are generally greater than those of extratropical eruptions. Moreover, we found that large tropical eruptions accompanied by subsequent El Niño events caused less summer cooling than those that occurred without El Niño association. Superposed epoch analysis (SEA) based on 27 events, including 14 tropical eruptions and 13 extratropical eruptions, shows that the summer cooling driven by extratropical eruptions is insignificant on the TP, while significant summer temperature decreases occur subsequent to tropical eruptions. Further analysis of the TP August–September temperature responses reveals a significant postvolcanic cooling only when no El Niño event occurred. However, there is no such cooling for all other situations, that is, tropical eruptions together with a subsequent El Niño event, as well as extratropical eruptions regardless of the occurrence of an El Niño event. The averaged August–September temperature deviation (Tdev) following 10 large tropical eruptions without a subsequent El Niño event is up to −0.48° ± 0.19°C (with respect to the preceding 5-yr mean), whereas the temperature deviation following 4 large tropical eruptions with an El Niño association is approximately 0.23° ± 0.16°C. These results indicate a mitigation effect of El Niño events on the TP temperature response to large tropical eruptions. The possible mechanism is that El Niño events can weaken the Indian summer monsoon with a subsequent decrease in rainfall and cooling effect, which may lead to a relatively high temperature on the TP, one of the regions affected by the Indian summer monsoon. The changing characteristics of lake ice phenology over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are investigated using historical satellite retrieved datasets during 2002–15 in this study. The results indicate that the freezing process mainly starts in December, and the ice melting process generally occurs in April for most lakes. However, the changes in lake ice phenology have varied depending on the location in recent years, with delayed break-up dates and prolonged ice durations in the southern TP, but no consistent changes have occurred in the lakes in the northern TP. Further analysis presents a close connection between the variation in the lake ice break-up date/ice duration over the southern TP and the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The positive NAO generally excites an anomalous wave activity that propagates southward from the North Atlantic to North Africa and, in turn, strengthens the African–Asian jet stream at its entrance. Because of the blocking effect of the TP, the enhanced westerly jet can be divided into two branches and the south branch flow can deepen the India–Myanmar trough, which further strengthens the anomalous cyclonic circulation and water vapor transport. Therefore, the increased water vapor transport from the northern Indian Ocean to the southern region of the TP can increase the snowfall over this region. The increased snow cover over the lake acts as an insulating layer and lowers the lake surface temperature in the following spring by means of snow–ice feedback activity, resulting in a delayed ice break-up date and the increased ice duration of the lakes over the southern TP in recent years. Dust is a major component of atmospheric aerosol worldwide, greatly affecting regional and global climate. In this study dust aerosol optical depth (DAOD) and dust mass fluxes (DMF) were evaluated at different altitudes using measurements by the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) and ERA-Interim data from March through May (MAM) for the period 2007-16. Significantly higher uppertropospheric (above ;8 km) dust loads and DMF downstream of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) relative to those over other major dust sources of the Northern Hemisphere were found during spring. A DMF magnitude of 1010 g integrated across a 28-latitude segment during spring was estimated downstream of the TP in the upper troposphere. A dust belt can be clearly seen at altitudes higher than 6 km over the downwind direction of the TP at latitudes of around 30°-40°N, crossing the Pacific Ocean and extending to North America during spring. Apathway for transporting dust aerosols into the upper troposphere is proposed, as follows. Dust is uplifted to the midtroposphere over the source regions; then, frequent, deep, dry convection prevailing over the TP during spring can cause convective overshooting that uplifts the dust aerosols to the upper troposphere. The TP thus acts as a channel for transporting dust from the lower atmosphere to the upper troposphere, enabling the long-range zonal transport of dust around the Northern Hemisphere. Land surface temperature T s provides essential supplementary information to surface air temperature, the most widely used metric in global warming studies. A lack of reliable observational T s data makes assessing model simulations difficult. Here, the authors first examined the simulated T s of eight current reanalyses based on homogenized T s data collected at ~2200 weather stations from 1979 to 2003 in China. The results show that the reanalyses are skillful in simulating the interannual variance of T s in China ( r = 0.95) except over the Tibetan Plateau. ERA-Interim and MERRA land versions perform better in this respect than ERA-Interim and MERRA. Observations show that the interannual variance of T s over the north China plain and south China is mostly influenced by surface incident solar radiation R s, followed by precipitation frequency, whereas the opposite is true over the northwest China, northeast China, and the Tibetan Plateau. This variable relationship is well captured by ERA-Interim, ERA-Interim land, MERRA, and JRA-55. The homogenized T s data show a warming of 0.34°C decade−1 from 1979 to 2003 in China, varying between 0.25° and 0.42°C decade−1 for the eight reanalyses. However, the reanalyses substantially underestimate the warming trend of T s over northwest China, northeast China, and the Tibetan Plateau and significantly overestimate the warming trend of T s over the north China plain and south China owing to their biases in simulating the R s and precipitation frequency trends. The southeastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau (SEPTP) was hit by an extraordinarily severe drought in the autumn of 2009. Overall, the SEPTP has been gripped by a sustained drought for six consecutive years. To better understand the physical causes of these types of severe and frequent droughts and thus to improve their prediction and enhance the ability to adapt, many research efforts have been devoted to the disastrous droughts in the SEPTP. Nonetheless, whether the likelihood and strength of the severe droughts in the SEPTP, such as that in the autumn of 2009, have been affected by anthropogenic climate change remains unknown. This study first identifies the atmospheric circulation regime responsible for the SEPTP droughts and then explores how human-induced climate change has affected the severe droughts in the SEPTP. It is found that the drought conditions in the SEPTP have been driven by the Indian-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) sea surface temperature (SST) through strengthening of the local Hadley circulation and anomalously cyclonic motion over the South China Sea. Ensemble simulations of climate models demonstrate a robust increase in the dry and warm meteorological conditions seen during the 2009 SEPTP autumn drought due to anthropogenic global warming. Occupying the upper troposphere over subtropical Eurasia during boreal summer, the South Asian high (SAH) is thought to be a regulator of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), which is particularly important for regional climate over Asia. However, there is feedback of the condensational heating associated with EASM precipitation to SAH variability. In this study, interannual variation of SAH intensity and the mechanisms are investigated. For strong SAH cases, the high pressure system intensifies and expands. Significant positive anomalies of the geopotential height and upper-tropospheric temperature were found over the Middle East and to the east of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), namely, the western and the eastern flanks of the SAH. The dynamical diagnosis and the numerical experiments consistently show that the interannual variation of SAH intensity is strongly affected by EASM precipitation over the eastern TP-Yangtze River valley. The feedback of the condensational heating anomaly to the SAH is summarized as follows: Excessive EASM heating excites a local anticyclone in the upper troposphere and warms the upper troposphere, leading to the eastward extension of the SAH's eastern edge and reinforcing geopotential height anomalies over East Asia. Furthermore, the monsoonal heating excites a westward-propagating Rossby wave that increases the upper-tropospheric geopotential height and warms the upper troposphere over the Middle East. In conclusion, this study suggests a mechanistic paradigm in which the EASM may also be a modulator of SAH variation rather than just a passive result of the latter as traditionally thought. Although tree-ring-width-based temperature reconstructions of centennial-to-millennial length have previously been published for many parts of the eastern Tibetan Plateau (ETP), a millennium-long regional-scale composite reconstruction with annual resolution has so far been lacking. Here, the authors present a reconstruction of June-August (JJA) temperature variability over the ETP for the period AD 1000-2005 using a nested composite-plus-scale (CPS) approach to 12 temperature-sensitive tree-ring width chronologies, including 946 individual tree-ring width series. The composite reconstruction reveals warm episodes occurring during much of the sixteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries and cold episodes during much of the eleventh, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. The period AD 1996-2005 is likely the warmest decade in the context of the past millennium. The authors explore the influence of possible forcings, finding only a weak direct relationship of temperature changes over the ETP with solar forcing at multidecadal time scales but a robust in-phase relationship with the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) during the past millennium. This suggests that the AMO may play an important role in controlling summer temperature variability over the ETP at multidecadal time scales. A comparison with temperature reconstructions from the higher latitudes of East Asia, central-eastern China, and the whole of the Northern Hemisphere shows that the cold eleventh century and the warm nineteenth century prevailing over ETP are somewhat unique, suggesting regional specific characteristics of the temperature variability in this region. The Tarim basin (TB) in northwestern China is one of the most arid regions in the middle latitudes, where water is scarce year-round. This study investigates the variations of summer precipitation in the TB and their association with water vapor fluxes and atmospheric circulation. The results suggest that the variations of summer precipitation in the TB are dominated by the water vapor fluxes from the south and east, although the long-term mean water vapor mostly comes from the west. The anomalous water vapor fluxes are closely associated with the meridional teleconnection pattern around 50°-80°E and the zonal teleconnection pattern along the Asian westerly jet in summer. The meridional teleconnection connects central Asia and the tropical Indian Ocean; the zonal teleconnection resembles the 'Silk Road pattern.' The two teleconnections lead to negative height anomalies in central Asia and positive height anomalies in the Arabian Sea and India and in northern central China. The anomalous pressure gradient force, caused by these height anomalies, leads to anomalous ascending motion in the TB and brings low-level moisture along the eastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau and water vapor from the Arabian Sea passing over the Tibetan Plateau to influence precipitation development in the study region. To develop a finescale dataset for the purpose of analyzing historical climatic change over the Tibet Plateau (TP), a high-resolution regional climate simulation for 1979-2011 was conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model driven by the ERA-Interim (ERA-Int). This work evaluates the high-resolution (30 km) WRF simulation in terms of annual variation, spatial structure, and 33-yr temporal trends of surface air temperature (Tair) and precipitation (Prec) over the TP, with reference to station observations. Another focus is on the examination of the height-temperature relationship. Inheriting from its forcing, the WRF simulation presents an apparent cold bias in the TP. The cold bias is largely reduced by a lapse rate correction of the simulated surface air temperature with help of the station and model elevations. ERA-Int presents the same sign of Tair and Prec trends as the observations, but with smaller magnitude, especially in the dry season. Compared to its forcing, the WRF simulation improves the simulation of the annual cycles and temporal trends of Tair and Prec in the wet season. In the dry season, however, there is hardly any improvement. The observed Tair presents a downward linear trend in the lapse rate. This feature is examined in the WRF simulation in comparison to ERA-Int. The WRF simulation captures the observed lapse rate and its temporal trend better than ERA-Int. Long-term trends in precipitable water (PW) are an important component of climate change assessments for the Tibetan Plateau (TP). PW products from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are able to provide good spatial coverage of PW over the TP but limited in time coverage, while the meteorological stations in the TP can estimate long-term PW but unevenly distributed. To detect the decadal trend in PW over the TP, Bayesian inference theory is used to construct long-term and spatially continuous PW data for the TP based on the station and MODIS observations. The prior information on the monthly-mean PW from MODIS and the 63 stations over the TP for 2000-06 is used to get the posterior probability knowledge that is utilized to build a Bayesian estimation model. This model is then operated to estimate continuous monthly-mean PW for 1970-2011 and its performance is evaluated using the monthly MODIS PW anomalies (2007-11) and annual GPS PW anomalies (1995-2011), with RMSEs below 0.65 mm, to demonstrate that the model estimation can reproduce the PW variability over the TP in both space and time. Annual PW series show a significant increasing trend of 0.19 mm decade−1 for the TP during the 42 years. The most significant PW increase of 0.47 mm decade−1 occurs for 1986-99 and an insignificant decrease occurs for 2000-11. From the comparison of the PW data from JRA-55, ERA-40, ERA-Interim, MERRA, NCEP-2, and ISCCP, it is found that none of them are able to show the actual long-term trends and variability in PW for the TP as the Bayesian estimation.
