This paper describes the rainfall and microphysical structure of precipitation associated with Tropical Cyclone Ockhi using polarimetric Doppler weather radar (PDWR) products. The study reports the statistical analysis of precipitation types of tropical cyclone cloud systems over the north Indian Ocean, by combining the observations of the PDWR and disdrometer for the first time. There are few studies that mention initial DWR observations of TC over this low-latitude region below 23.5°N. We tried to further carry out a statistical analysis of precipitating clouds in a cyclone from its depression stage to severe cyclonic stage. This study tries to classify and quantify the contribution of convective and stratiform rain to the total TC rainfall. Precipitating clouds have been classified into convective and stratiform based on reflectivity measurements. The vertical profiles (VPRs) of the radar reflectivity Z and the differential reflectivity ZDR obtained for the stratiform and the convective events are compared. A study of the VPR of the convective events reveals that the Z and ZDR parameters tend to increase as the raindrops descend toward the ground owing to enhanced collision–coalescence processes. The VPR of stratiform rain shows signatures of the bright band (BB). The drop size distribution (DSD) parameters and rainfall rate pertaining to the two different precipitation regimes are estimated from the radar data and have been compared. The use of radial velocity information from the European weather radar network is a challenging task, because of a heterogeneous radar network and the different ways of providing the Doppler velocity information. Preprocessing is therefore needed to harmonize the data. Radar observations consist of a very high resolution dataset, which means that it is both demanding to process as well as that the inherent resolution is much higher than the model resolution. One way of reducing the number of data is to create "super observations" (SO) by averaging observations in a predefined area. This paper describes the preprocessing necessary to use radar radial velocities in the data assimilation where the SO construction is included. Our main focus is to optimize the use of radial velocities in the HARMONIE-AROME numerical weather model. Several experiments were run to find the best settings for first-guess check limits as well as a tuning of the observation error value. The optimal size of the SO and the corresponding thinning distance for radar radial velocities was also studied. It was found that the radial velocity information and the reflectivity from weather radars can be treated differently when it comes to the size of the SO and the thinning. A positive impact was found when adding the velocities together with the reflectivity using the same SO size and thinning distance, but the best results were found when the SO and thinning distance for the radial velocities are smaller than the corresponding values for reflectivity. The latest established generation of weather radars provides polarimetric measurements of a wide variety of meteorological and nonmeteorological targets. While the classification of different precipitation types based on polarimetric data has been studied extensively, nonmeteorological targets have garnered relatively less attention beyond an effort to detect them for removal from meteorological products. In this paper we present a supervised learning classification system developed in the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) that uses Bayesian inference with empirical probability density distributions to assign individual range gate samples into 7 meteorological and 12 nonmeteorological classes, belonging to five top-level categories of hydrometeors, terrain, zoogenic, anthropogenic, and immaterial. We demonstrate how the accuracy of the class probability estimates provided by a basic naive Bayes classifier can be further improved by introducing synthetic channels created through limited neighborhood filtering, by properly managing partial moment nonresponse, and by considering spatial correlation of class membership of adjacent range gates. The choice of Bayesian classification provides well-substantiated quality estimates for all meteorological products, a feature that is being increasingly requested by users of weather radar products. The availability of comprehensive, fine-grained classification of nonmeteorological targets also enables a large array of emerging applications, utilizing nonprecipitation echo types and demonstrating the need to move from a single, universal quality metric of radar observations to one that depends on the application, the measured target type, and the specificity of the customers' requirements. Significance Statement: In addition to meteorological echoes, weather radars observe a wide variety of nonmeteorological phenomena including birds, insects, and human-made objects like ships and aircraft. Conventionally, these data have been rejected as undesirable disturbance, but lately their value for applications like aeroecological monitoring of bird and insect migration has been understood. The utilization of these data, however, has been hampered by a lack of comprehensive classification of nonmeteorological echoes. Providing timely warnings for severe and potentially tornadic convection is a critical component of the NWS mission, and owing to the associated large reflectivity gradients, sidelobe contamination is possible. This paper focuses on elevation sidelobe contamination appearing in the low-level inflow region of supercells. A qualitative conceptual model of the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) antenna pattern interacting with supercells is introduced, along with Doppler power spectrum representations of the potential mix of returned power from the main lobe and the sidelobes. These tools inform the multiple ways elevation sidelobe contamination appears in the low levels, primarily below 3 km (10 kft) of radar data. The most common manifestation is somewhat noisy data similar to particulates or biota in clear air. Trained NWS forecasters are accustomed to mentally filtering out noisy clear-air returns as less important. Elevation sidelobe contamination can be mixed with the three-body scatter spike (TBSS) artifact, though the TBSS remains the more salient feature. The most consequential form is the apparent circulation, and when it is incorrectly interpreted as valid, contributes to the false alarm ratio (FAR) for NWS tornado warnings. Quantitative results on the effect of elevation sidelobe contamination on FAR are presented. Diagnostic techniques are emphasized, and with familiarization, can be used in real-time warning operations to identify the apparent circulation as either valid or an imposter. Identification of these contaminated velocity signatures offers a unique opportunity to reduce the NWS tornado warning FAR without also reducing the probability of detection (POD). Significance Statement: The WSR-88D weather radars provide overall high-quality data for users. However, with some severe thunderstorms, an artifact called elevation sidelobe contamination can produce what looks like a rotation signature, but it may not be real. These ambiguous velocity signatures can contribute to tornado warnings based on rotation signatures that are false circulations. This paper specifically focuses on elevation sidelobe contamination due to its impact on tornado warning decisions. Diagnostic techniques, including several examples, are presented here to aid the reader in correctly identifying elevation sidelobe contamination and why it may occur. Correct identification of an apparent circulation as an imposter due to contamination is a unique opportunity to improve NWS tornado warning performance by reducing warning false alarms. A method named BTREC, which is in fact an extension of tracking a radar echo by cross-correlation (TREC) method, is proposed based on the Barnes filter in this paper. BTREC is an efficient objective analysis method for smoothing the motion vectors of radar echo patterns. A comparative analysis of the BTREC vectors and the COTREC (another extension of TREC, which is restricted by the 2D continuity equation) vectors is conducted. The results show that the BTREC method corrects the noise and inconsistencies in TREC vectors (often induced by shielding, ground clutter, and rapid morphological changes of the radar patterns) more thoroughly than COTREC. Then the BTREC, COTREC, and TREC methods are applied to extrapolate the real radar echo pattern over Jiangxi Province in China for two cases (1900–2100 UTC 4 June and 0900–1100 UTC 30 June 2018). Results show that the BTREC method performs the best out of the three methods to forecast the radar echo patterns in the following 1 and 2 h, and has the least distortion. To further confirm that, 892 radar composite reflectivity mosaic images with precipitation in summer (June–August) over Jiangxi are collected to test the three methods. The results show that in the 1- and 2-h extrapolations, the mean differences of the threat score (TS), correlation (CORR), and probability of detection (POD) between BTREC and TREC are obviously more than 0, while that of the false alarm ratio (FAR) is remarkably less than 0 (the threshold to identify whether a grid is correctly predicted is set to 10 dBZ). Although the mean difference of TS, CORR, POD, and FAR between COTREC and TREC have similar variation, their magnitudes are obviously decreased (especially for the 2-h extrapolation). This further indicates that the BTREC method obviously improves the forecast of the radar echo pattern within the next 2 h compared to the COTREC and TREC methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The analysis and forecast of precipitation characteristics is a key task for national meteorological services for providing high-quality weather forecasts and warnings. Beside the precipitation amount, the precipitation type is essential to describe and evaluate the recent, ongoing, and future weather situations. This paper introduces a new surface-based hybrid hydrometeor classification algorithm. The presented method combines polarimetric radar observations at radar beam height from the C-band dual-polarization weather radar network of the German Weather Service [Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)] with corrected thermodynamical profiles of numerical weather prediction (NWP) model output and extrapolates the hydrometeor classes at radar beam height to a height of 2 m above ground level (AGL). The implemented technique parameterizes the microphysical processes in the lower troposphere based on the appropriate thermodynamical profile that the hydrometeors have to pass along their way from the radar beam height to the surface. Due to errors in NWP output, the NWP vertical profiles of temperature and humidity are adjusted by using several types of surface stations with high spatial and temporal resolution. Verification results show considerable improvements in the hydrometeor classification near the ground compared to the radar sweep height. After an additional positive in-house evaluation, the presented method is integrated into DWD's operational environment. The topic of this paper is to describe the processing steps for the computation of the near-surface precipitation type. In addition, example cases and a verification study complement the explanations. Significance Statement: For a national weather service and its customers, the separation of precipitation types into solid and liquid is a key issue for improving weather forecasts and warnings. We combined measurements from weather radars and weather stations together with output of numerical weather prediction models and developed a method of estimating the precipitation type at a height of 2 m. Previous studies of the hydrometeor classification field concentrate on warm season weather conditions using "radar observations only" or apply a hybrid combination of radar observations with model information. The uniqueness of our work is the additional introduction of surface observations with high temporal and spatial resolution for a better estimation of the thermodynamical profiles to improve the "all season alignment." Ground clutter filtering is an important and necessary step for quality control of ground-based weather radars. In this paper, ground clutter mitigation is addressed using a time-domain regression filter. Clutter filtering is now widely accomplished with spectral processing where the times series of data corresponding to a radar resolution volume are transformed with a discrete Fourier transform after which the zero and near-zero velocity clutter components are eliminated by setting them to zero. Subsequently for reflectivity, velocity, and spectrum width estimates, interpolation techniques are used to recover some of the power loss due to the clutter filter, which has been shown to reduce bias. The spectral technique requires that the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) time series be windowed to reduce clutter power leakage away from zero and near-zero velocities. Unfortunately, window functions such as the Hamming, Hann, and Blackman attenuate the time series signal by 4.01, 4.19, and 5.23 dB for 64-point times series, respectively, and thereby effectively reduce the number of independent samples available for estimating the radar parameters of any underlying weather echo. In this paper, a regression filtering technique is investigated, through simulated data, that does not require the use of such window functions and thus provides for better weather signal statistics. In a follow-on paper that is in preparation the technique will be demonstrated using both S-band polarimetric radar (S-Pol) and NEXRAD data. Here, it is shown that the regression filter rejects clutter as effectively as the spectral technique but has the distinct advantage that estimates of the radar variables are greatly improved. The highly successful fleet of Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radars is approaching its end of service, and research efforts are under way to inform a decision toward a possible WSR-88D replacement. A methodology to link radar design characteristics to impacts on how radar data are used to diagnose hazardous weather was developed through a unique partnership between radar-engineering innovations in radar simulations and National Weather Service (NWS) radar data interpretation expertise. Deep commitment to two-way learning across disciplines resulted in a methodology that is both efficient and highly relevant to the NWS hazardous weather warning program. The methodology presented in this paper is a model for revealing complex trade-offs between weather radar characteristics and their resultant impact on NWS data interpretation for threat identification. This qualitative methodology is presented in the context of a broader proof-of-concept study from which it was developed. Adapted for further research, it can support the crucial role of deriving quantitative radar design criteria that balance the trade-offs among radar capabilities, cost, and impact to users. That is, the proposed methodology supports the evaluation of candidates for a potential WSR-88D replacement and any necessary major system upgrades in the interim. Significance Statement: Defining the requirements for an operational weather radar system is ideally achieved with clearly identified trade-offs among cost, radar design characteristics, and impacts on user data interpretation. Nowcasting based on weather radar uses the current and past observations to make estimations of future radar echoes. There are many types of operationally deployed nowcasting systems, but none of them are currently based on deep learning, despite it being an active area of research in the last few years. This paper explores deep learning models as alternatives to current methods by proposing different architectures and comparing them against some operational nowcasting systems. The methods proposed here, harnessing residual convolutional encoder–decoder architectures, reach a level of performance expected of current systems and in certain scenarios can even outperform them. Finally, some of the potential drawbacks of using deep learning are analyzed. No decay in the performance on a different geographical area from where the models were trained was found. No edge or checkerboard artifact, common in convolutional operations, was found that affects the nowcasting metrics. Significance Statement: Deep learning methods started to become more popular for weather nowcasting, but none is operational. We noticed that most of the studies did not present a benchmark against operational systems, and in many cases, the evaluation methods used were limited to light rain scenarios. Our goal is to propose deep learning models, analyze how they perform against operational methods in many scenarios, and explore some of the potential limitations. We found that our models perform better for low to mild storms. While we showed that common side effects of convolutional operations (a common technique in deep learning) did not impair the performance, we agree with many other authors that the major problem is the smoothing effect that hinders the nowcast of intense storms. In a 2018 paper by Bukovčić et al., polarimetric bivariate power-law relations for estimating snowfall rate S and ice water content (IWC), S ⁡ (K DP , Z) = γ K DP α Z β and IWC ⁡ (K DP , Z) = γ 2 K DP α 2 Z β 2 , were developed utilizing 2D video disdrometer snow measurements in Oklahoma. Herein, these disdrometer-based relations are generalized for the range of particle aspect ratios from 0.5 to 0.8 and the width of the canting angle distribution from 0° to 40° and are validated via analytical/theoretical derivations and simulations. In addition, a novel S(KDP, Zdr) polarimetric relation utilizing the ratio between specific differential phase KDP and differential reflectivity Zdr, K DP / ⁡ (1 − Z dr − 1 ) , is derived. Both KDP and (1 − Z dr − 1 ) are proportionally affected by the ice particles' aspect ratio and width of the canting angle distribution; therefore, the variables' ratio tends to be almost invariant to the changes in these parameters. The S(KDP, Z) and S(KDP, Zdr) relations are applied to the polarimetric S-band WSR-88D data obtained from three geographical locations in Virginia, Oklahoma, and Colorado, and their performance is compared with estimations from the standard S(Z) relations and ground snow measurements. The polarimetric estimates of snow accumulations from the three cases exhibit smaller bias in comparison with the S(Z), indicating good potential for more reliable radar snow measurements. Since the dual-polarization upgrade of the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D), the polarimetric variables have become a fundamental tool for better interpretation and forecasting of hazardous weather events. Thus, improving their quality has been an important long-standing effort. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-scan estimators (HSE), which use the available data in split cuts of operational volume coverage patterns (VCP) to provide better estimates of differential reflectivity, differential phase, and correlation coefficient. The HSE are designed to choose between the data provided by either one of the two scans in split cuts based on their expected statistical performance, resulting in the same or better data quality compared to the conventional estimators. The performance improvement realized with the HSE is characterized with simulations and illustrated with data from WSR-88D. While relatively simple, an operational implementation of the HSE could bring improvements to forecasters' data interpretation and algorithm performance, both of which rely on dual-polarization radar data. Machine learning algorithms are trained on a 10-yr archive of composite weather radar images in the Swiss Alps to nowcast precipitation growth and decay in the next few hours in moving coordinates (Lagrangian frame). The hypothesis of this study is that growth and decay is more predictable in mountainous regions, which represent a potential source of practical predictability by machine learning methods. In this paper, artificial neural networks (ANN) are employed to learn the complex nonlinear dependence relating the growth and decay to the input predictors, which are geographical location, mesoscale motion vectors, freezing level height, and time of the day. The average long-term growth and decay patterns are effectively reproduced by the ANN, which allows exploring their climatology for any combination of predictors. Due to the low intrinsic predictability of growth and decay, its prediction in real time is more challenging, but is substantially improved when adding persistence information to the predictors, more precisely the growth and decay and precipitation intensity in the immediate past. The improvement is considerable in mountainous regions, where, depending on flow direction, the root-mean-square error of ANN predictions can be 20%–30% lower compared with persistence. Because large uncertainty is associated with precipitation forecasting, deterministic machine learning predictions should be coupled with a model for the predictive uncertainty. Therefore, we consider a probabilistic perspective by estimating prediction intervals based on a combination of quantile decision trees and ANNs. The probabilistic framework is an attempt to address the problem of conditional bias, which often characterizes deterministic machine learning predictions obtained by error minimization. To detect wake vortices in all weather conditions, lidar and radar sensors are complementary. It is important to determine accurately the limitations of the radar detection in clear air and to determine the parameters influencing the detection. This paper is the first study to present the simulation and analysis of the radar signatures of wake vortices on the basis of state-of-the-art 3D large-eddy simulations. The setup of the large-eddy simulations is described and the evolution of the wake vortices is illustrated for the three simulated cases. A modified version of the model developed by Muschinski et al. is used here for the calculation of the radar-backscattered signal and the second moment of the Doppler spectrum that is used to estimate the wake vortex circulation. The simulator uses two different radar configurations for the retrieval of the circulation, which is compared with the circulation obtained directly from the large-eddy simulations. The retrieval of the circulation is fairly accurate if the level of backscattered signal is high enough above the detection threshold of the radar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compared to traditional single-polarization radar, dual-polarization radar has a number of advantages for quantitative precipitation estimation because more information about the drop size distribution and hydrometeor type can be gleaned. In this paper, an improved dual-polarization rainfall methodology is proposed, which is driven by a region-based hydrometeor classification mechanism. The objective of this study is to incorporate the spatial coherence and self-aggregation of dual-polarization observables in hydrometeor classification and to produce robust rainfall estimates for operational applications. The S-band dual-polarization data collected from the NASA Polarimetric (NPOL) radar during the GPM Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) ground validation field campaign are used to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed rainfall algorithm. Results show that the improved rainfall method provides better performance than a few single- and dual-polarization algorithms in previous studies. This paper also investigates the impact of radar beam broadening on various rainfall algorithms. The CSU–CHILL radar is a dual-wavelength, dual-polarization weather radar system operating at S and X band with coaxial beams. This radar system offers a unique environment to develop and/or validate algorithms that cut across its wavelengths and polarizations. This paper presents a method to retrieve resonance scattering regions from the difference in intrinsic reflectivities after attenuation correction, which is performed using measured reflectivity fields only. The algorithm to retrieve these regions dominated by non-Rayleigh scattering is applied to different storm events, and the obtained data field capturing the difference in S- and X-band reflectivities due to resonance effects (which we will call Mie signal for convenience) is compared to the collocated dual-polarization fields. The obtained Mie signal is also compared to hail reports. In both cases, the retrieved Mie signal is found to be consistent with the rest of the dual-polarization data fields, and in some situations, it is shown to bring information not directly discernible from the usual dual-polarization radar variables. A prototype quantitative precipitation estimate (QPE) algorithm that utilizes specific attenuation A and specific differential phase KDP was developed for inclusion into the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system and the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network. Special attention is given to the optimization of the factor α used for computation of a path-integrated attenuation from a total span of differential phase along the propagation path in rain. It is suggested to estimate α from a slope of the ZDR dependence on Z in rain. The use of real-time adjusted α allows us to capture the variations of the drop size distributions, and therefore improve the QPE accuracy. It is demonstrated that the factor α is generally higher for tropical rain type compared to continental rain. Since the R(A) approach is only valid for pure rainfall, the R(KDP) relation is suggested as a complement in areas of hail contamination. Raindrop size sorting is a ubiquitous microphysical occurrence in precipitating systems. Owing to the greater terminal fall speed of larger particles, a raindrop's fall trajectory can be sensitive to its size, and strong air currents (e.g., a convective updraft) can enhance this sensitivity. Indeed, observational and numerical model simulation studies have confirmed these effects on raindrop size distributions near convective updrafts. One striking example is the lofting of liquid drops and partially frozen hydrometeors above the environmental 0°C level, resulting in a small columnar region of positive differential reflectivity ZDR in polarimetric radar data, known as the ZDR column. This signature can serve as a proxy for updraft location and strength, offering operational forecasters a tool for monitoring convective trends. Beneath the 0°C level, where WSR-88D spatiotemporal resolution is highest, anomalously high ZDR collocated with lower reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization ZH is often observed within and beneath convective updrafts. Here, size sorting creates a deficit in small drops, while relatively large drops and melting hydrometeors are present in low concentrations. As such, this unique raindrop size distribution and its related polarimetric signature can indicate updraft location sooner and more frequently than the detection of a ZDR column. This paper introduces a novel algorithm that capitalizes on the improved radar coverage at lower levels and automates the detection of this size sorting signature. At the algorithm core, unique ZH–ZDR relationships are created for each radar elevation scan, and positive ZDR outliers (often indicative of size sorting) are identified. Hydrometeor classification methods using polarimetric radar variables rely on probability density functions (PDFs) or membership functions derived empirically or by using electromagnetic scattering calculations. This paper describes an objective approach based on cluster analysis to deriving the PDFs. An iterative procedure with K-means clustering and expectation-maximization clustering based on Gaussian mixture models is developed to generate a series of prototypes for each hydrometeor type from several radar scans. The prototypes are then grouped together to produce a PDF for each hydrometeor type, which is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. The cluster-based method is applied to polarimetric radar data collected with the CP-2 S-band radar near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The results are illustrated and compared with theoretical classification boundaries in the literature. Some notable differences are found. Coherent power is an alternative to the conventional noise-subtracted power technique for measuring weather radar signal power. The inherent noise-canceling feature of coherent power eliminates the need for estimating and subtracting the noise component, which is required when performing conventional signal power estimation at low signal-to-noise ratio. The coherent power technique is particularly useful when averaging a high number of samples to improve sensitivity to weak signals. In such cases, the signal power is small compared to the noise power and the required accuracy of the estimated noise power may be difficult to achieve. This paper compares conventional signal power estimation with the coherent power measurement technique by investigating bias, standard deviation, and probability of false alarm and detection rates as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and threshold level. This comparison is performed using analytical expressions, numerical simulations, and analysis of cloud and precipitation data collected with the airborne solid-state Ka-band precipitation radar (KPR) operated by the University of Wyoming. The recently developed two-dimensional variational methods for analyzing vortex winds from radar-observed mesocyclones can be extended to analyze three-dimensional vortex winds, but the first task for this extension is to estimate the vortex center location and its continuous variations in four-dimensional space so that the horizontal location of the vortex center can be expressed as a continuous function of height and time. To accomplish this task, a three-step method is developed in this paper. The method is applied to the Moore, Oklahoma, tornadic mesocyclone observed by the operational KTLX radar (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and the NSSL phased-array radar on 20 May 2013. The estimated vortex center trajectory at the ground level is verified with the tornado damage survey data. The estimated vortex center trajectories above the ground (up to 4-km height) reveal that the vortex core was initially tilted northeastward along the direction of the environmental flow and its vertical shear but became nearly vertical about 16 min later and 4 min before the vortex started to cause EF5 damages. In Doppler weather radars, the presence of unfolding errors or outliers is a well-known quality issue for radial velocity fields estimated using the dual-pulse repetition frequency (PRF) technique. Postprocessing methods have been developed to correct dual-PRF outliers, but these need prior application of a dealiasing algorithm for an adequate correction. This paper presents an alternative procedure based on circular statistics that corrects dual-PRF errors in the presence of extended Nyquist aliasing. The correction potential of the proposed method is quantitatively tested by means of velocity field simulations and is exemplified in the application to real cases, including severe storm events. The comparison with two other existing correction methods indicates an improved performance in the correction of clustered outliers. The technique proposed is well suited for real-time applications requiring high-quality Doppler radar velocity fields, such as wind shear and mesocyclone detection algorithms, or assimilation in numerical weather prediction models. Adaptive range oversampling processing can be used either to reduce the variance of radar-variable estimates without increasing scan times or to reduce scan times without increasing the variance of estimates. For example, an implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening on the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased-Array Radar (NWRT PAR) led to a twofold reduction in scan times. Conversely, a proposed implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening the U.S. Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network would reduce the variance of dual-polarization estimates while keeping current scan times. However, the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening is not compatible with radar-variable estimators for which an explicit variance expression is not readily available. One such nontraditional estimator is the hybrid spectrum-width estimator, which is currently used in the NEXRAD network. In this paper, an extension of adaptive pseudowhitening is proposed that utilizes lookup tables (rather than analytical solutions based on explicit variance expressions) to obtain range oversampling transformations. After describing this lookup table (LUT) adaptive pseudowhitening technique, its performance is compared to that of the original version of adaptive pseudowhitening using traditional radar-variable estimators. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory has reflectivity measurements at two different frequencies: Ku and Ka bands. The dual-frequency ratio from the measurements has been used to perform rain type classification and microphysics retrieval in the current DPR level 2 algorithm. The dual-frequency classification module is a new module in the GPM level 2 algorithm. The module performs rain type classification and melting region detection using the vertical profile of the dual-frequency ratio. This paper presents an evaluation of the performance of the GPM dual-frequency classification module after launch. The evaluation process includes a comparison between the dual-frequency classification results and the TRMM legacy single-frequency results, as well as validation with ground radars. The Sahelian zone of West Africa is a semiarid area where strong amplitude of the seasonal and diurnal cycles of water vapor and temperature is observed. One year of continuous observation of vertical profiles of water vapor and temperature gathered from Niamey, Niger, with a profiling microwave radiometer is used to analyze the climatology of refractivity and microwave propagation regimes in the low troposphere. Seasonal and diurnal cycles of refractivity and ground-based radar anomalous propagation are emphasized. It is shown that the combined effect of water vapor and temperature vertical gradients is responsible for strong seasonal and diurnal cycles of the ducting propagation regime. Statistics of propagation regimes are given. The probability density functions of the refractivity gradient are found lognormally distributed. Three months of C-band radar data simultaneous with the profiling microwave radiometer observations have also been collected. Relations between the vertical refractivity gradient and the ground-based radar anomalous propagation echoes (APE) are illustrated and discussed. APE spatial distributions are found strongly related to the main features of the orography and topography inside the radar-observed area. Contingency tests show that the probability for APE to be linked to ducting is higher than 95%. In addition, this paper suggests that observing the refractivity vertical profiles from a microwave radiometer profiler located close to a meteorological radar provides information on whether anomalous propagation has to be considered as a potential cause of spurious signal in the measured reflectivity field. By fitting a parametric vortex model directly to aliased radar radial velocities scanned from a hurricane, the maximum tangential velocity and its radial distance from the hurricane vortex center can be estimated by the recently developed alias-robust vortex analysis. This vortex analysis can be refined to produce a suitable reference radial velocity field on each tilt of a radar scan for the reference check in the first main step of dealiasing. This paper presents the techniques developed for the refinements and shows how and to what extent the refined vortex analysis can improve the reference check and thus enhance the dealiased data coverage, especially over severely aliased data areas around the vortex core of a hurricane or typhoon. In addition, stringent threshold conditions are used in the reference check and the subsequent continuity check to ensure the accepted data are free of alias or almost so. The robustness and improved performance of the method are exemplified by the results tested with severely aliased radial velocities scanned by operational WSR-88D radars from hurricanes in the United States and by operational China New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD) base data format SA radars from typhoons in China. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) algorithms consist of modules. This paper describes version 4 (V4) of GPM DPR level 2 (L2) classification (CSF) modules, which consist of two single-frequency (SF) modules-that is, Ku-only and Ka-only modules-and a dual-frequency (DF) module. Each CSF module detects bright band (BB) and classifies rain into three major types, that is, stratiform, convective, and other. The Ku-only and Ka-only CSF modules use algorithms that are similar to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain type classification algorithm 2A23. The DF CSF module uses a new method called the measured dual-frequency ratio (DFRm) method for the rain type classification and the detection of BB. It is shown that the Ku-only CSF module and the DF CSF module produce almost indistinguishable rain type counts in a statistical sense. Classic supercell storms occur in a generally well understood environment characterized by instability and vertical wind shear. Within this broadly favorable environment, large day-to-day variability in environmental parameters may lead to widely varying radar presentation of storms. Of interest here is whether specific storm structures exhibit repeatable characteristics in similar environments and whether radar presentation can be predicted with knowledge of environmental characteristics. Specifically, this paper focuses on (i) updraft characteristics inferred using differential reflectivity ZDR columns, (ii) characteristics of storm-relative inflow inferred using ZDR arcs, and (iii) areal extent and cyclicality of polarimetrically inferred hailfall at low levels. Variability of these radar features is compared among storms in similar environments and among a larger subset of storms across highly varying environments. The similarity of storms in similar and different environments is quantified, and tornadic and nontornadic storms are compared. Associations between inferred updraft, inflow, and hailfall characteristics and environmental variables are discussed. Storm features generally exhibit greater similarity among storms in similar environments than across environments, although exceptions occur. The sun is known to be a good target for weather radar calibration. In this paper high-resolution raster scans of the sun at high elevations will be used to derive the antenna pattern of weather radar, without being affected by beam propagation effects and reflections close to the earth's surface. It is shown that this pattern matches well to pattern measurements using a point source. Hence, a good estimation of the real antenna pattern can be derived using the sun. Furthermore, formulas to extract undistorted antenna patterns from the sun, even at high-elevation angles, are derived. The signal processing required to achieve high sensitivity for the antenna pattern measurements will be described. Important parts of the antenna pattern-for example, sidelobes-become visible when using long integration times. The polarimetric receiver channel cross-correlation coefficient is proposed as a figure of merit of the cross-polar isolation of the antenna and hence the cross-polar pattern. This paper documents the study of the radar signature of the sea surface on the images collected by an X-band weather radar and its application to remote sensing of the coastal zone. The main radar parameters considered here are the reflectivity factor [which was converted into a normalized radar cross section (NRCS)], the differential reflectivity, and the mean radial velocity. Measurements of the NRCS in the vicinity of an instrumented offshore buoy allowed for identifying its variations with wind speed and relative direction, which are found to be consistent with the Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) model and other measurements. A more accurate empirical model for the NRCS is developed. For moderate to strong winds, the mean radial velocity is linearly related to the radial component of the wind speed, showing the potentiality of weather radars to map the radial surface wind speed at the scale of a basin. The influence of surface currents is weak here but should be likely taken into account in other places with stronger currents. Measurements of the differential reflectivity are also consistent with other measurements made elsewhere for the polarization ratio. The analysis of radar data over the entire coverage could also be performed using surface wind estimates from a meteorological model. Similar but less accurate results are obtained for the NRCS and the mean radial velocity. The extra spatial variability not due to wind speed variations is identified. An inversion procedure is proposed to recover the wind vector field from radar measurements after calibration of the NRCS values. Detection of meteorological radar signals is often carried out using power averaging with noise subtraction either in the time domain or the spectral domain. This paper considers the relative signal processing gain of these two methods, showing a clear advantage for spectral-domain processing when normalized spectral width is less than ~0.1. A simple expression for the optimal discrete Fourier transform (DFT) length to maximize signal processing gain is presented that depends only on the normalized spectral width and the time-domain weighting function. The relative signal processing gain between noncoherent power averaging and spectral processing is found to depend on a variety of parameters, including the radar wavelength, spectral width, available observation time, and the false alarm rate. Expressions presented for the probability of detection for noncoherent and spectral-based processing also depend on these same parameters. Results of this analysis show that DFT-based processing can provide a substantial advantage in signal processing gain and probability of detection, especially when the normalized spectral width is small and when a large number of samples are available. Noncoherent power estimation can provide superior probability of detection when the normalized spectral width is greater than ~0.1, especially when the desired false alarm rate exceeds 10%. Although radial velocity data from Doppler radars can partially resolve some tornadoes, particularly large tornadoes near the radar, most tornadoes are not explicitly resolved by radar owing to inadequate spatiotemporal resolution. In addition, it can be difficult to determine which mesocyclones typically observed on radar are associated with tornadoes. Since debris lofted by tornadoes has scattering characteristics that are distinct from those of hydrometeors, the additional information provided by polarimetric weather radars can aid in identifying debris from tornadoes; the polarimetric tornadic debris signature (TDS) provides what is nearly 'ground truth' that a tornado is ongoing (or has recently occurred). This paper outlines a modification to the hydrometeor classification algorithm used with the operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network in the United States to include a TDS category. This paper presents a procedure to filter ground clutter from dual-polarized staggered pulse repetition time (PRT) radar data in simultaneous and alternating transmission modes for polarimetric variables retrieval. The filter is designed in the time domain so that polarimetric variables such as the differential phase () and the copolar correlation coefficient () can be estimated directly from clutter-filtered time series data using a conventional method. In the case of the simultaneous mode, a single filter is used for both channels to maintain the signal correlation after filtering. For the alternating mode, because the polarizations are transmitted in different waveforms, two separate filters are required. However, the filters are designed so that the responses of the filters to the signals are identical within the extended Doppler range. Based on radar simulation, it is shown that the method can provide accurate retrieval of polarimetric variables even in the case of strong clutter contamination. The weather radar-based object-oriented convective storm tracking is a standard approach for analyzing and nowcasting convective storms. However, the majority of current storm-tracking algorithms provide nowcasts only in a deterministic fashion with limited ability to estimate the related uncertainties. This paper proposes a method for probabilistic nowcasting of convective storms that addresses the issue of uncertainty of nowcasts. The approach first utilizes a two-dimensional radar-based storm identification and tracking algorithm in conjunction with the Kalman filtering of noisy measurements of storm centroid with the continuous white noise acceleration model. The resulting smoothed estimates of storm centroid and velocity components and their error covariance values are then applied to nowcast the probability of storm occurrence. To verify the approach, 20-60-min nowcasts were computed every 5 min using composite weather radar data in Finland including approximately 22 000 tracked storms. The verification shows that the algorithm is applicable in both deterministic and probabilistic manner. Moreover, the forecast probabilities are consistent with observed frequencies of the storms, especially with 20- and 30-min nowcasts. The accuracy of the probabilistic nowcasts was evaluated through the Brier skill score with respect to the deterministic nowcasts and nowcasts based on observation persistence and sample climatology. The use of low-power solid-state transmitters in weather radar to keep costs down requires a pulse compression technique that maintains an adequate minimum detectable signal. However, wideband pulse compression filters will partly reduce the system's sensitivity performance. In this paper, a sensitivity enhancement system (SES) for pulse compression weather radar is developed to mitigate this issue. SES uses a dual-waveform transmission scheme and an adaptive pulse compression filter. The waveforms' diversity can be done in the frequency domain or the time domain. The adaptive filter is designed based on the self-consistency between signal returns from the two waveforms. Analysis based on radar-simulated data and observations from NASA's dual-frequency dual-polarized Doppler radar (D3R) shows that by using SES, the system sensitivity can be improved by 7-10 dB when compared to that of the conventional matched filter. This paper presents results and analyses of applying an international space data compression standard to weather radar measurements that can easily span eight orders of magnitude and typically require a large storage capacity as well as significant bandwidth for transmission. By varying the degree of the data compression, the nonlinear response of models that relates measured radar reflectivity and/or Doppler spectra to the moments and properties of the particle size distribution characterizing clouds and precipitation was analyzed. Preliminary results for the meteorologically important phenomena of clouds and light rain indicate that for a ±0.5-dB calibration uncertainty, typical for the ground-based pulsed-Doppler 94-GHz (or 3.2 mm, W band) weather radar used as a proxy for spaceborne radar in this study, a lossless compression ratio of only 1.2 is achievable. However, further analyses of the nonlinear response of various models of rainfall rate, liquid water content, and median volume diameter show that a lossy data compression ratio exceeding 15 is realizable. The exploratory analyses presented are relevant to future satellite missions, where the transmission bandwidth is premium and storage requirements of vast volumes of data are potentially problematic. One way to reduce the variance of meteorological-variable estimates on weather radars without increasing dwell times is by using range oversampling techniques. Such techniques could significantly improve the estimation of polarimetric variables, which typically require longer dwell times to achieve the desired data quality compared to the single-polarization spectral moments. In this paper, an efficient implementation of adaptive pseudowhitening that was developed for single-polarization radars is extended for dual polarization. Adaptive pseudowhitening maintains the performance of pure whitening at high signal-to-noise ratios and equals or outperforms the digital matched filter at low signal-to-noise ratios. This approach results in improvements for polarimetric-variable estimates that are consistent with the improvements for spectral-moment estimates described in previous work. The performance of the proposed technique is quantified using simulations that show that the variance of polarimetric-variable estimates can be reduced without modifying the scanning strategies. A method for the operational monitoring of the weather radar antenna mechanics and signal processing is presented. The method is based on the analysis of sun signals in the polar volume data produced during the operational scanning of weather radars. Depending on the hardware of the radar, the volume coverage pattern, the season, and the latitude of the radar, several tens of sun hits are found per day. The method is an extension of that for determining the weather radar antenna pointing and for monitoring the receiver stability and the differential reflectivity offset. In the method the width of the sun image in elevation and in azimuth is analyzed from the data, together with the center point position and the total power, analyzed in the earlier methods. This paper describes how the width values are obtained in the majority of cases without affecting the quality of the position and power values. Results from the daily analysis reveal signal processing features and failures that are difficult to find out otherwise in weather data. Moreover, they provide a tool for monitoring the stability of the antenna system, and hence the method has great potential for routine monitoring of radar signal processing and the antenna mechanics.
