Background: This nationwide study aimed to estimate Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence in 7–9-year-old Italian children. Promoted by Italy's Ministry of Health and coordinated by the National Observatory for Autism at the National Institute of Health, it covered schools in northern (Lecco and Monza-Brianza), central (Rome and its province), and southern (Palermo and its province) regions from February 24, 2016, to February 23, 2018, using a multi-stage approach defined by the European Union's ASD network. Methods: Phase one identified ASD-diagnosed children in mainstream schools through local Ministry of Education (MoE) disability registries. Phase two had a subset of schools screen 7–9-year-olds using the Social Communication Questionnaire-Life version (SCQ-L). Those with SCQ-L scores of 15 + underwent clinical consultation for ASD symptoms, cognitive abilities, and life skills. To counter potential false negatives, 20% scoring 11–14 were randomly assessed via Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). Results: MoE data revealed 9.8 per 1000 certified ASD children in the north, 12.2 in the central, and 10.3 in the south. In phase two, 35,823 SCQ-L questionnaires were distributed across 198 schools (northern: 11,190 in 49 schools, central: 13,628 in 87 schools, southern: 11,005 in 62 schools). Of SCQ-L respondents, 2.4% (n = 390) scored above the 15 cutoff. Among these, 100 had ASD diagnoses, and 50 had other diagnoses. Among 115 families assessed, 16.5% (n = 19) received ASD diagnoses. Conclusions: The estimated prevalence of ASD in Italy was 13.4 (11.3–16.0) per 1,000 children aged 7–9 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 4.4:1. It will guide national policies in enhancing services tailored to the specific needs of autistic children. Using a trusted multi-stage approach, our findings offer practitioners accurate data for informed decision-making and policy formulation. Our study's ASD prevalence estimates of 1 per 77 children equips practitioners to advocate for tailored policies, ensuring specialized support for autistic children and families. Background: Despite ibuprofen widely recognized safety profile, an increase of suspected adverse events has been reported in the last decade in parallel with its growing over-the-counter use. The aims of this study were to assess the therapeutic approach to the feverish child and to evaluate the main indications and the most frequent adverse events related to ibuprofen administration in children. Methods: A specific questionnaire-form regarding the management of ibuprofen therapy in children was distributed among a sample of pediatricians all over the Italian territory between September and October 2020. An electronic data collection through a specifically designed web-based platform was performed among the participating pediatricians. Results: One-hundred-eighty-one pediatricians completed the survey. In case of fever, 177 (98%) participants prescribe paracetamol, while only 4 (2%) preferred ibuprofen as first choice. One-hundred-twenty-eight pediatricians (71%) administer paracetamol alone, while 53 (29.2%) use the combined/alternating treatment with ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is mostly administered for musculoskeletal pain (30%), upper respiratory tract infection (20%), headache (15%) and post-surgical pain (9%). Sixty-three (35%) out of 181 participating pediatricians reported 191 adverse events during ibuprofen administration. The most common were gastrointestinal (GI), with GI bleeding being reported in 30/191 cases (15.7%), epigastric pain in 29/191 (15.1%), non-specified abdominal pain in 22/191 (11.1%) and nausea/vomiting in 21/191 (11%). Severe adverse events including kidney damage (3.1%), complicated infections (0.5%), pneumonia associated empyema (0.5%), soft tissue infection (0.5%) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (0.5%) were also reported. The adverse events led to a hospitalization in 12% of children. In 53/191 cases (28%) the adverse events were related to a wrong dosage or prolonged therapy or errors in frequency of administration. Conclusions: This survey demonstrate a sufficient awareness of Italian pediatricians regarding ibuprofen-prescribing patterns with the only possible concern related to the relatively high percentage of pediatricians performing a combining/alternating use of paracetamol and ibuprofen. The reported adverse events were mild in most of the cases and often related to errors in dosage, frequency and treatment duration, emphasizing the need for a major caution of both practitioners and patients in their use. Background: Data about acute poisoning in Italian pediatric patients are obsolete or absent. This study would partially fill this exiting gap and compare the scene with others around the world. Methods: A retrospective evaluation was performed on a 2012–2017 data registry of the Children's Emergency Department at the Regina Margherita Hospital of Turin, where 1030 children under age 14 were accepted with a diagnosis of acute intoxication. Results: The median age of the patients was 2.2 years (IQR 2.3) and 55% were male. Events occurred mostly in children aged 1–4 years (n = 751, 72.9%). Six hundred and eight patients (59%) were exposed to Nonpharmaceutical agents, the household cleaning products being the more frequent (n = 298, 49%). Exposure to Pharmaceuticals were 422 (41%); the most common Pharmaceuticals were analgesics (n = 88, 20.8%), psychotropics (n = 77, 18.2%) and cardiovascular (n = 53, 12.6%) drugs. The 85% of the intoxications occurred accidentally, the 10.6% as therapeutic error, the 2.3% as suicide attempts and the 1.5% for recreational purposes. No patient died. Conclusions: Despite acute poisoning being a relevant problem in pediatric emergency, our results would seem to paint a less worrying picture if compared to other countries, mainly when considering the children hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit and the number of deaths.
