The current technologies to treat hypersaline produced water (PW), such as thermal evaporation, are usually energy-intensive and cost-prohibitive. This study developed a low-cost, robust, solar-driven carbon black and airlaid paper-based evaporator (CAPER) for desalination of PW in the Permian Basin, United States. The study aims to better understand the removal of aromatic organic compounds and heavy metals during solar distillation, water output, and heat transfer. Outdoor experiments using CAPER assisted with polystyrene foam in a single slope, single basin solar still achieved an enhanced average evaporation rate of 2.23 L per m2 per day, 165% higher than that of a conventional solar still. Analysis of heat transfer models demonstrated that CAPER solar evaporation achieved an evaporative heat transfer coefficient of ∼28.9 W m−2·K−1, 27.9% higher than without CAPER. The maximum fractional energy of evaporation and convection heat transfer inside the solar still with and without CAPER was ∼81.4% and ∼78.2%, respectively. For the PW with a total dissolved solids concentration of 134 g L−1, solar distillation removed 99.97% salts and over 98% heavy metals. The high removal efficiency of 99.99% was achieved for Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ni, Se, Sr, and V. Organic characterization revealed that solar distillation removed over 83% aromatic compounds. Solar desalination using CAPER provides a low-cost and high-performance process to treat PW with high salinity and complex water chemistry for potential fit-for-purpose beneficial uses. Surfactant aids boiling enhancement, but the related mechanism is not yet comprehensively understood. For mechanism investigation on surfactant molecule, most of existing studies focused on its hydrophobic part, while research on hydrophilic part is scarce. In this paper, a group of non-ionic Triton surfactants with same functional group but different hydrophilic chain lengths were experimentally tested for pool boiling on flat copper. At critical micelle concentration (CMC), long-chain Tx-405 exhibited higher heat transfer coefficient (97.4 kW/(m2·K)) than Tx-100 (77.1 kW/(m2·K)) and Tx-114 (77.4 kW/(m2·K)). Long-term test indicated a gradually deteriorating trend of heat transfer performance from days on. Solution properties and bubble dynamics were measured. At low concentration, surfactant with shorter hydrophilic chain has better heat transfer performance due to greater surface tension reduction. The increase of hydrophilic chain length improves water affinity of surfactant and thus leads to higher CMC. If there is no restriction for surfactant concentration, a longer hydrophilic chain is favorable for higher heat transfer coefficient at CMC. Micro fins on the internal surface of the tube improves its heat transfer ability. This paper investigates the thermal performance of tube flow numerically by adding axial straight micro fins (ASMF) on internal tube surfaces. The numerical method is experimentally validated using a tube featuring ASMF. The effects of fin height e , fin number N f , and fin shape of the tube with ASMF on the thermal performance are numerically studied within the range of Reynolds number (Re) from 1280 to 7687. Compared to a smooth tube, the Nusselt number (Nu) for tube with ASMF is reduced over the entire range of Re. In order to assess the performance of heat transfer, the ratio of the heat transfer coefficient (h) multiplying the heat transfer area (F) of ASMF tube (hF) to that of the smooth tube (h s F s) is utilized. Parametric studies were performed. The optimal fin height, fin number are found to be 0.0429 and 32. The optimal fin profile is found to be quadratic function profile. By combining the optimal fin height, fin number and fin profile, the maximum value of hF /(h s F s) can reach 1.32. • Local condensation heat transfer in smooth channels and pin fin array is presented. • The effect of operating parameters on the heat transfer characteristics was analyzed. • Sensitivity analysis is performed of heat transfer to identify the critical parameters. • Condensation heat transfer increases with heat flux in the range of vapor quality above 0.4. In this paper, an experimental study of flow condensation was carried out of R134a in a multiport mini channel and a mini channel with pin fin array. The former comprised 20 parallel rectangular channels with an equivalent diameter of 0.64 mm. The latter is a narrow rectangular mini channel containing 10 rows of diamond pin fins with a staggered configuration, and height and longitudinal/transverse pitch of 0.5 mm and 2 mm respectively. To acquire the local value of heat flux and heat transfer coefficient, air jet impingement cooling devices were adopted to condense the vapor of refrigerants. The effects of vapor quality, mass flux, heat flux, and saturation pressure on flow condensation heat transfer coefficient were investigated with the operating conditions: vapor quality from 1 to 0, mass flux from 160 to 450 kg/(m2s), heat flux from 10.0 to 39.8 kW/m2, and saturation pressure from 600 to 1500 kPa. The experimental results indicated that the pin fin array significantly improves the condensation heat transfer coefficient up to nearly 186 % compared to the multiport mini channel in the high vapor quality region. For both channels, the local heat transfer coefficient increases with an increase in vapor quality, mass flux, and heat flux whereas decreases with increase in saturation pressure. The influence of heat flux and mass flux on heat transfer coefficient was more pronounced in the high vapor quality region than in the low vapor quality region. A sensitivity analysis was performed at different vapor quality levels. The most influential parameters in the smooth channel and the pin fin array are saturation pressure and mass flux, respectively. The relative contribution of heat flux is more obvious in the high vapor quality region. Some of the existing correlations have good prediction performance for the smooth channel experimental data in this paper, and the corresponding MAD is within 20 %. In this paper, the barrel of small-caliber automatic rifle is taken as the research object. An experiment was taken on the gun barrel and an infrared thermal imager was used to measure the change of barrel temperature field during the continuous shooting, and the finite difference model of barrel heat transfer was established. The formula of the correction coefficient of heat transfer of gunpowder gas on the inner surface of the body tube was obtained by fitting with the experimental results. The barrel transient heat transfer analysis calculation software with independent intellectual property rights was developed by C++, and the characteristics of temperature field were analyzed. The experimental results show that the temperature of the outer surface of the barrel rises and then falls along the axial direction from the bottom of the barrel to the muzzle, and the rising slope will decrease in the next 30 rounds of continuous firing. The calculation results of the small-caliber barrel with chromium layer show that the temperature of the outer surface of the chromium layer of each shot rises instantaneously and then drops rapidly, in the form of pulse, and the temperature of the steel matrix rises continuously, but it is significantly lower than the peak temperature of the chromium layer, and the presence of the chromium layer provides buffer protection for the barrel matrix material. There is still an influence region in the matrix behind the interface between the chromium layer and the barrel matrix, and the temperature of the steel matrix in this region fluctuates. The thickness of the influence region is determined by analysis. The temperature of the inner surface of the barrel reaches a maximum at the tail of the barrel along the axial axis and then slowly decreases in the direction of the muzzle, the radial temperature distribution of the barrel is steeper at the tail end and the muzzle area is relatively flat. The calculation results of the model in this paper are basically consistent with the experimental results, which provides a rapid calculation model and tool for the thermal design and analysis of the gun barrel. The background of this study is the problem of thermal runaway in the battery cells of electric vehicles. Increasingly powerful and compact battery packs require highly efficient thermal management. One potential solution is the direct liquid cooling of lithium-ion battery cells using a dielectric liquid which boils over a safety limit temperature. This approach intends to prevent in a first step the cell thermal runaway and if it fails in a second step its propagation to its neighbors: the liquid boiling helps to mitigate the cell temperature rise and to transport and spread the heat. The arrangement of the cells in the pack and their close spacing induce a scientific problem of convective boiling in a mini-channel. To enhance designs using this solution, a comprehensive understanding of flow boiling and a precise local heat transfer quantification is essential. The HFE-7100 has been selected as a working fluid for its attractive thermophysical properties and a suitable saturation temperature. The present paper introduces new experimental results of flow boiling dielectric fluid, the HFE-7100, in a vertical rectangular mini-channel. Measurements are carried out from start of boiling to dry-out. Boiling curves are obtained for a mass flux of 391 kg/(m².s), at different pressures (0.7, 1, 1.5 bar) and at different subcoolings (Δ T s u b = 0 ; 15 ; 30 ; 45 ∘ C). The test section is an aluminum block instrumented with three lines of five K-type thermocouples located all along the flow. The visualization of the flow is achieved through a glass pane with a high-speed camera to identify different flow patterns. The local heat transfer coefficient is calculated by a resolution of a 2D inverse heat conduction method. The experiment mainly aims at determining the heat transfer coefficient, the critical heat flux (CHF) and the pressure drop and at characterizing both the flow regimes and the dry-out phenomenon. The influence of subcooling and pressure on flow boiling is analyzed. An increase in subcooling enhances the CHF and the heat transfer coefficient, and delays the dry-out. Subcooling has an impact on the flow pattern and modifies the type of CHF. In the operating conditions tested, a decrease in pressure enhances CHF and delays dry-out. To investigate the effect of heat flux on the enhanced heat transfer in phase change materials (PCMs) composed of copper metal foam (CMF) and paraffin wax (PX), a semi-cylindrical visualized heat storage device with a varied heat flux of 7.3 kW/m2, 8.5 kW/m2, 9.7 kW/m2, and 10.9 kW/m2 was established in this paper. Moreover, a 3-D mathematical model of composite phase change materials (CPCMs) was established using hybrid grid to study the temperature distribution, imbalance effect, flow, heat transfer mechanisms, and heat storage performance during the melting process. The results showed that the melting time of the CPCMs decreased as the heat flux increased. Compared with a heat flux of 7.3 kW/m2, the melting time was shortened by 10.05 %, 20.71 %, and 27.21 %, respectively. In addition, the Rayleigh number (Ra) increased with the increase in heat flux, and the amplitudes of Ra were 1.45×108,1.54×108,1.61×108, and 1.74×108, respectively, which indicated that the higher the heat flux, the larger the amplitudes. Moreover, the heat transfer mechanism during the melting process was dominated by conduction; however, with the increase in heat flux, the maximum flow velocity of the liquid paraffin increased, which caused the proportion of natural convection to increase from 27.80 % to 31.30 %. Hence, the integrated heat transfer coefficient of CPCMs increased from 5.69 W/(m·K) to 5.81 W/(m·K). However, the temperature imbalance effect of the CPCMs was exacerbated, as evidenced by the increased maximum temperature difference in the vertical direction of the center of the CPCMs from 24.7 K to 35.6 K. Besides, the heat storage performance was enhanced. Compared with a heat flux of 7.3 kW/m2, the heat storage capacities of the CPCMs increased by 4.21%, 9.46%, and 12.66 % with increasing heat flux, and the heat storage rates of the CPCMs increased by 15.3 %, 34.9 %, and 52.3 %, respectively. Experimental investigation on flow boiling heat transfer in a small tube under high system pressure has been conducted in this study. The test-section is constructed with a 316L stainless steel tube. The inner diameter and heated length of the test-section are 5 mm and 930 mm, respectively. The working fluid is deionized water. The operating conditions of the experiments are as follows, the mass flux from 548 to 978 kg/(m2·s), the wall heat flux from 136 to 238 kW/m2, and the system pressure from 1.0 to 2.9 MPa. The experimental results showed that the inlet subcooling mainly affects the onset of nucleate boiling, but its impact on the heat transfer coefficient at the same vapor quality is almost negligible. The heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of mass flux and wall heat flux, especially in the region where x e < 0.02. The average heat transfer coefficient is higher under high system pressure owing to the variation of the thermophysical properties. Additionally, the existing flow and heat transfer correlations cannot predict the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient and frictional pressure drop in the experiments accurately enough. Therefore, the new flow and heat transfer correlations are developed based on the experimental data in this paper, and the mean absolute deviation of the flow boiling heat transfer correlation and frictional pressure drop correlation are 13.3% and 12.1%, respectively. To deal with inverse nonlinear heat transfer problems in a two-dimensional heat conduction problem, this paper presents a hybrid approach combining fuzzy logic and the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed algorithm has been applied to the real-time reconstruction of the temperature field, time-varying convective heat transfer coefficient, and time-varying boundary heat flux using temperature data from a set of sensors. The effects of the covariance of the initial estimation error, the time step of data acquisition by the sensors, and the number of installed sensors on the precision and stability of the estimation results has been investigated by numerical experiments. To compare and validate the results, all these parameters were investigated using the EKF method. The results show that the adaptive fuzzy extended Kalman filter (FEKF) method for estimating temperature, convection coefficient, and heat flux at the boundaries is precise and stable. The comparison shows that the performance of the FEKF method in parameter estimation is better than the EKF method, and the highest increase in precision and stability of the results is related to the convective heat transfer coefficient. Under severe accident conditions, in addition to steam and air, there may also be hydrogen produced by the reaction of zirconium alloys and steam, CO 2 produced by the molten corium concrete interaction (MCCI) and other gases in the containment. These gases, whose properties are quite different from air, can significantly affect the steam condensation process outside the tube bundle. This paper aims to investigate the effects of non-condensable gas mixtures with varying component concentrations on the steam condensation process outside a 3 × 5 tube bundle using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The thermal conditions studied are set to a pressure of 0.4 MPa, a subcooling of 40 K, and a molar concentration of steam of 0.66. The results show that CO 2 has an acceleration effect on the flow field outside the tube bundle, which promotes the diffusion of steam to the inside of the bundle, thus increasing the condensation heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) of the bundle and decreasing the difference in CHTC between different heat transfer tubes inside the bundle. Hydrogen, on the other hand, inhibits the downward flow of the gas mixture, causing a decrease in CHTC. However, at high hydrogen concentration (X H2 >0.1), the gas mixture will form a buoyant flow upward, and then the CHTC of the tube bundle will be significantly increased by up to 177%. Mixing of surface microstructure and wettability is one of the future development trends. Their combination always affects the bubble motion and heat transfer coefficient under pool boiling/flow boiling, but it is difficult to distinguish their respective contributions. This work studies the combination of new microstructure and mixed wettability to improve the flow boiling heat transfer in the channel. The nucleation, growth, coalescence and departure behaviors of R134a boiling bubbles were numerically analyzed. Effects of different heights, gaps and mixed wettability of microstructures and heat fluxes on bubble emission frequency and boiling heat transfer coefficient were discussed. Results showed that this new microstructure provides the bubble with the momentum of lateral motion, which helps the bubble to merge and leave faster. The surface of the hydrophobic groove coupled with the hydrophilicity as the substrate can effectively increase the bubble emission frequency, up to 134.37%. At the same time, the heat transfer coefficient decreases with the increase of the height of the microstructure, and it also increases with the increase of the microstructure gap. Finally, the contribution of each variable was determined by analysis of variance. Channels of different sizes are employed in diverse engineering applications to enhance the efficiency of heat transfer system. Minichannels are preferred for their compactness, enhanced heat transfer, larger surface area to volume ratio, and high heat transfer coefficient values. There is a dearth of literature addressing flow boiling in minichannels with highly subcooled water at atmospheric system pressure. This research paper analyses the flow boiling phenomenon in a 2 mm diameter minichannel, comparing it with conventional 4 mm and 11.7 mm diameter tubes while maintaining a constant length to diameter ratio of 150. The analysis investigates the wall temperature distribution, local heat transfer coefficient, and temporal heat transfer fluctuations at a mass flux of 150 – 2400 kg/m2s and 109 – 1080 kW/m2 heat flux. The study explores the impact of boiling number on wall temperature fluctuations. Results reveal that mass flux doesn't impact heat transfer in subcooled flow boiling but does in saturated flow boiling in conventional channel. There are no significant temporal fluctuations of wall temperature in a 4 mm tube. However, vapor bubble size affects the circumferential area of minichannels, leading to abrupt flow disturbance. Wall temperature fluctuations occur in the minichannel for the boiling number exceeding 1.76 × 10−4. Temperature fluctuations in minichannel increase with boiling number, but decrease as mass flux is increased. In the thermal management of fuel cell vehicles, radiators are subjected to vibrations due to vehicle speed and road surface irregularities. However, there has been no comprehensive study of the impact of these vibrations on the heat transfer performance of radiators. Therefore, this paper employs R141b to conduct three-dimensional transient numerical simulations of flow boiling in small channels under vertical vibrations. The study reveals that the single-phase heat transfer coefficient exhibits periodic variations. At the same vibration frequency, the heat transfer frequency for the vertically oriented heating surface is twice that of the horizontally oriented surface, This is because the thermal boundary layer varies with the vibration velocity. Furthermore, as the frequency increases to 21 Hz, the time-averaged heat transfer coefficient can increase by up to 2.5 times. Following boiling onset, for horizontally oriented heating surfaces, an increase in frequency or amplitude enhances the transient heat transfer performance. Under the conditions of 28 Hz and 5 mm, the heat transfer coefficient can increase by 125.7%. However, for vertically oriented heating surfaces, when the frequency exceeds 14 Hz or the amplitude exceeds 8 mm, the heat transfer performance weakens after 7.143 s due to the promotion of bubble coalescence by the vibrations. Corrugated tubes are extensively unitized in enhancing heat transfer within tubular heat exchange devices. The efficiency of these corrugated tubes is closely linked to the geometric characteristics of the surface corrugations. In this study, we conducted an extensive series of Large Eddy Simulations on a representative type of enhanced tube featuring periodic inward corrugations (PIC). Our goal was to compile a comprehensive and precise dataset of the thermal and hydraulic properties specific to this design. The key design parameters that define the corrugated patterns are corrugation height (H), corrugation width (W), and the length of the straight section (P). We systematically explored these parameters to understand their impact on heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Among these parameters, corrugation height (H) has been identified as the most influential factor affecting flow and heat transfer properties. As the corrugation height varies from 1/8D to 3/8D, we observed a substantial increase in the friction factor and Nusselt number by a factor of 209 and 5, respectively, at Re = 1000; while the critical Reynolds number decreased roughly from 800 to 100. These findings underscore the significant role of corrugation height in shaping the flow and heat transfer performance of PIC tubes. The other two parameters, corrugation width and straight section length, were also found to be crucial in determining the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. When Re = 1000, variations in W/D from 1 to 3 resulted in a 1.3-fold increase in both the f and the Nu. Furthermore, altering the P/D from 2 to 6 led to a 2.1-fold increase in f and a 2.2-fold increase in Nu. The results of our study suggest that when utilizing this type of corrugated tubes, careful consideration is required to strike an optimal balance between heat transfer efficiency and pressure loss. The double helix coil heat exchanger, which has high heat transfer performance, has been increasingly used in heat transfer systems. In this paper, a 3D numerical model is established to simulate heat transfer performance of the double helical coil. Then, the Box-Behnken design method and response surface method (RSM) are used to establish response surface models of the input parameters (internal coil pitch, external coil pitch, internal helix diameter, external helix diameter, and coil diameter), which are used to evaluate the interaction of input parameters and objective functions (overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop). Finally, the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize the design parameters of double helix coil heat exchangers, and the optimized double helix coil heat exchanger with high heat transfer coefficient, low exergy loss and pressure drop are obtained. • In this paper is provided an calculation expression for heat transfer during condensation inside tubes that provides an adequate fit with experimental data available from a total of 22 fluids, including refrigerants, water, and a variety of substances organic. This paper presents a mathematical deduction of a new improved model for heat transfer during condensation inside tubes. This new model has been developed with the aid of the Gaussian Equation for an infinite straight line, considering this relation with the differential equations that govern the heat transfer process. The proposed model was verified by comparison with available experimental data of 22 different fluids, including various refrigerants, water, and organic substances, which condense inside vertical, inclined and horizontal tubes. The proposed model is valid for an reduced pressure values ranging from 0.0008 to 0.91, values of Reynolds number for single-phase between 68 and 84,827 and for Reynolds number for two-phase between 900 and 59,4373, a range of internal diameters ranging from 2 to 50 mm, vapor quality from 0.01 to 0.99, P r values for single-phase from 1 to 18 and mass flux rates in the ranges of 3 to 850 kg/(m2s). The mean deviation found for the analyzed data for horizontal tubes was 11.8%, while for the vertical and inclined tubes data the mean deviation was 13.0%. This paper presents the heat-transfer assessment of different low GWP substitutes for traditional HydroFluoroCarbon (HFC) refrigerants obtained by applying both an experimental analysis based on the direct measurement of thermal (heat transfer coefficients) and hydraulic (pressure drops) performances and a theoretical analysis based on a specific Performance Evaluation Criteria (PEC), the Total Temperature Penalisation (TTP), in the specific case of boiling and condensation in a commercial Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE). The results of both the experimental and the theoretical assessment confirm that the refrigerant R32 has comparable heat transfer characteristics to R410A. Similarly the refrigerants R290 and R1270 exhibit superior heat transfer performance to R404A; the refrigerants R152a, R1234yf and R1234ze(E) show heat transfer characteristics comparable to R134a and R1234ze(Z) exhibits superior heat transfer performance to R236fa. • A compact jet impingement boiling heat transfer device achieves a high-powder cooling power of 1532 w. • The variation trends of critical heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop with mass flux, saturated pressure and liquid subcooling are obtained. • Compared with smooth surface, a micro-pin-finned surface can increase CHF and HTC by up to 60 % and 32 %, while only increasing a pressure drop of 14 %. In this paper, jet impingement boiling heat transfer performance was studied using a novel new environmentally friendly refrigerant medium (HP-1) based on a high-power chip heat sink. A series of experimental investigations of jet impingement boiling were conducted on smooth and micro-pin-finned surfaces (PF0.5–0.5–1, PF0.5–0.5–2 and PF0.3–0.3–1). Heat transfer performances were evaluated over the saturated pressures from 450 to 590 kPa, liquid subcoolings from 2 to 15 K, nozzle sizes from 1 to 2 mm, mass fluxes from 71 to 858 kg/(m2s). The results show that critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) increases with the increase of mass flux and saturated pressure. At ΔT sub =15 K, the CHF of the micro-pin-finned surfaces can be increased by 63 % compared with smooth surface, in which the CHF of PF0.5–0.5–2 surface is up to 1532 kW/m2. Boiling heat transfer coefficient first increases and then decreases with the increase of heat flux. Due to the increase of the inlet liquid subcooling, leading to a large temperature difference, so the heat transfer coefficient is smaller at a high liquid subcooling. Several factors, such as mass flux, saturated pressure and liquid subcooling, have a great impact on pressure drop. With the increase of vapor quality, the shear action between the vapor-liquid phase is enhanced, and the pressure drop will gradually increase. Bubble behaviors have also been captured by a high-speed camera to help analyze the mechanism of jet impingement boiling heat transfer in a confined space for high-power chips. This paper delves into the flow and heat transfer characteristics occurring within falling films on horizontal tubes coated with a porous layer. To achieve this, a three-dimensional numerical model that couples the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method with porous media considerations was employed. The investigation comprehensively covers film spreading behavior, flow patterns, film velocity, film thickness, temperature distribution, and heat transfer coefficients, for both plain and porous tubes. Furthermore, we delve into the effects of key parameters, such as porosity, layer thickness, and material properties, on the overall heat transfer process. The results demonstrate the accuracy of our model in reproducing film thickness and heat transfer coefficients within falling films on horizontal porous tubes. When comparing plain tubes to porous ones, some key differences emerge. Specifically, the liquid film on porous tubes spreads more slowly, leading to increased film thickness and fewer occurrences of dry patches. Additionally, porous tubes result in lower film velocity and a more uniform temperature field compared to plain tubes. Interestingly, the findings reveal that smaller porosities yield thicker films and higher heat transfer coefficients, particularly when the porosity is below 0.4. Moreover, thicker porous layers result in thinner films, higher wetting ratios, and increased heat transfer coefficients. The most widely applied CHF model is Zuber's hydrodynamic instability model, which posits that the interference between vapor and liquid counterflows results in the CHF. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) hybrid micropillar array surface for hindering the liquid–vapor interface is proposed to enhance the CHF and heat transfer coefficient (HTC). The 3D hybrid surface comprises a tall hydrophobic (HB) pillar array surrounded by a short hydrophilic (HP) pillar array. The tall HB pillar array acts as a potential nucleation site for increasing the HTC, and the short HP pillar array acts as a wicking structure for facilitating liquid rewetting. In addition, the height difference between the HB and HP pillar arrays can potentially reduce the interference between liquid and vapor counterflows and increase the CHF. Relative to a plain silica surface, the 3D hybrid surface increases the CHF and HTC by 107% and 360%, respectively. • A revised self-induced jet impingement device is introduced in pool boiling using R1336mzz(Z). • Liquid-vapor separation promoted by the revised device is confirmed from the visualization results. • The revised device does nearly no effort on the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient until a relatively high heat flux. • Parametric investigations on the characteristics of the revised device are conducted. • The revised device gains up to 69.5 % and 36.7 % in the critical heat flux and the maximum nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient, respectively. Pool boiling performance enhancement has attracted considerable interest on high power electronic cooling. In this paper, we introduce a self-induced jet impingement device for practical boiling enhancement, achieved by integrating the guidance tube with an orifice plate. With R1336mzz(Z) as the working fluid, we conduct visualization and parametric investigations on the pool boiling performance, considering the varying characteristics of this device. Visualization snapshots confirm the liquid-vapor separation and indicate that the two-phase flow pattern in the guidance tube eventually stabilizes as a churn-annular flow. Our findings suggest that self-induced liquid jet impingement has a minimal effect on the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient (h NB) under a certain heat flux, around 75 % CHF of the standard pool boiling, as the single-phase heat transfer is weakened due to the low thermal conductivity of R1336mzz(Z). As the heat flux intensifies, we observe substantial enhancements in both the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) and the Maximum Nucleate Boiling Heat transfer coefficient (h MNB) resulted from the delayed onset of boiling crisis, owing to the additional liquid supply and the promotion on vapor exhausting. The parametric studies reveal that the flow rate of the liquid jet, amplified by either extending the length or the inner diameter of the guidance tube, or by increasing the number of jet holes, positively impacts the boiling performance. However, these improvements show diminishing returns. Our study shows enhancements in CHF and h MNB of up to 69.5 % and 36.7 %, respectively, compared to the standard pool boiling. Flow dynamics and heat transfer of supercritical hydrocarbon fuels have significant influences on the regeneratively cooled advanced aero-engines. In this paper, based on the principle of deep learning (DL), a deep neural network with a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model was developed to predict the flow field and heat transfer characteristics of supercritical hydrocarbon fuels. The network was trained by the calculation of Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The analysis shows that the predicted values of bulk fuel temperature, fuel velocity and heat transfer coefficient by the trained DL model match well with the CFD simulations. The linear correlation coefficients (R) between the DL model predicted values and the CFD calculated results are all bigger than 0. 99. Most of the relative errors are lower than 2 %. The consumed time of the DL model is of several orders (106) less than the CFD simulation. The effects of inlet Reynolds numbers, pressure and heating rate on the flow field and heat transfer of supercritical hydrocarbon fuels inside the regenerative cooling channel have been successfully learned by the DL model. When a pure vapor condenses over a surface, it can form a continuous liquid film or a multitude of discrete droplets, thus realizing the so-called dropwise condensation (DWC). In the literature, most of the experimental data refer to DWC on vertical condensing surfaces with quiescent vapor. However, in many applications, the condensing vapor usually has a non-zero flow velocity with a consequent effect on the sliding motion of droplets. Moreover, the drag force due to vapor velocity may be the only mechanism for liquid removal on a horizontal surface or in space applications. A systematic investigation of the effects of vapor drag and surface inclination on the heat transfer and droplet population during DWC is needed and is addressed in the present paper. Here, DWC of flowing steam is experimentally studied on sol-gel silica-based coated aluminium substrates at three different inclinations: vertical, inclined at 45°, and horizontal. Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and droplet population measurements are performed in a wide range of heat flux (260–610 kW m−2) and average vapor velocity (3.3–13.8 m s−1). When decreasing the tilt angle, from vertical to horizontal, due to the lower contribution of the gravity force, the average droplet size increases, and a strong HTC reduction is observed above all at low vapor velocities. Because of the vapor drag force, the HTC increases with steam velocity and, at the highest mass velocity, the HTC is independent from the surface inclination. A model for the droplet departing radius in the presence of vapor velocity, initially proposed by the present authors for the sole case of vertical surfaces, is here modified to account also for the effect of surface inclination and then assessed against the present experimental data. Hence, we propose to predict the heat flux during DWC by coupling the new equation for the departing radius with the available models of heat transfer through a single droplet and drop-size distribution. This paper examines the performance of a heat sink that combines an evaporator and an expansion device into a single component within a compact vapor compression refrigeration system designed for applications with high heat fluxes. The liquid refrigerant at high pressure expands through orifices, generating a spray that impacts a copper heater. The heated surface is enhanced with laser-micromachined micropillars featuring a square cross-section to improve the thermal conductance of the boiling liquid film. Qualitative evaluations of the enhanced surfaces using interferometry analyses determined the heat transfer surface area and assessed the effectiveness of the fabrication technique. The experiments involved using R-134a, a two-orifice expansion device, and enhanced surfaces with pillar edge sizes ranging from 200 to 600 μ m. This analysis encompasses the cooling system's thermodynamic performance, including compressor power and coefficient of performance, as well as steady-state heat transfer parameters such as convection coefficient and critical heat flux. The system achieved a cooling capacity of 230 W (35.9 W/cm 2), with the heater surface temperature staying below 22.9 °C and the highest average heat transfer coefficient reaching as high as 55 kW/(m 2 -K). This represents a 129% increase in thermal conductance compared to mirror polished surfaces, leading to a significant reduction in the temperature of the heated surface. Additionally, the area-corrected heat transfer coefficient is computed to verify the thermal resistance reduction unrelated to the surface area enhancement, and a 60% reduction is found. Furthermore, although this heat transfer enhancement shows minor to no influence on the thermodynamic performance of the refrigeration system, the heater cooling efficiency, defined as the ratio of the enthalpy rise delivered by the heat source to its ideal maximum, increased by 13%. Integrating nanotechnology into phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a novel approach to improving PCM thermal properties and performance in various thermal energy storage applications. Nanofluids, nanoparticle suspensions in a base fluid, have been identified as a promising method of increasing the thermal conductivity of PCMs and thus reducing thermal energy charging and discharging duration. This review paper investigates recent advances in incorporating nanotechnology into PCMs, focusing on their applications in the solar energy sector. Thermal conductivity, specific heat, viscosity, density, and convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids are discussed, as are the thermal properties of nano-enhanced PCMs (NEPCMs), including thermal conductivity, latent heat, specific heat, viscosity, supercooling, and phase-change temperature. The paper also gives an in-depth look at the uses of nanofluids and NEPCMs in solar collectors, photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) systems, coolants, and desalination, emphasizing their potential to improve system efficiency. The review also considers the potential environmental and human health concerns connected with using nanofluids and NEPCMs, emphasizing the importance of rigorous evaluation and risk assessment in developing and applying these materials. This paper explores the concept of characterizing the as-built Heat Loss Coefficient (HLC) of buildings based on-board monitoring (OBM), via energy consumption and temperature sensors, and time series analysis. It is examined (1) how the coefficients of different Auto-Regressive with eXogenous inputs (ARX) models can be interpreted and (2) whether these conclusions are sensitive to the building envelope assembly or the applied indoor temperature profile. The paper presents a theoretical case study whereby detailed building energy simulations are used to accurately map the impact of physical phenomena on the characterization process. The simulation models and boundary conditions are composed to focus on the link between the estimated ARX-coefficients and the physical driving forces for transmission heat loss to the ground and the exterior environment. The results show how the various ARX model coefficients are linked to specific components of the HLC (e.g. heat transfer through the walls and roof or through the slab-on-ground floor) and to what extent they are affected by the selection of input variables. By monitoring the ground temperature, the transmission heat losses can rather accurately be assigned to either the slab-on-ground or the walls and roof. Without this measurement data, the uncertainty on the estimates increases (ranges of the 95% confidence interval of up to 35% of the mean estimate). Modeling the ground heat losses by a constant intercept term leads to underestimations of the reference HLC of up to 59%, whereas adding heat flux sensors to monitor the transmission heat losses to the ground to the measurement set-up allows to assess the transmission heat transfer coefficient to the exterior environment HLC e within 2%. Abstract EHD is an active heat transfer enhancement technique for convective boiling or condensing dielectric fluids whose performance varies widely in the literature for even the same geometry and fluids. As such, the performance of EHD convective boiling devices remains largely unpredictable. Two empirical EHD convective boiling heat transfer coefficient correlations exist in the literature with good performance when compared to their exact test dataset and geometry, however they have been shown to have poor correlations in predicting the performance for external test datasets. In this paper, a phenomenological approach is taken in the development of a new EHD convective boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation and a novel EHD convective boiling pressure drop correlation. The performance correlations are based on widely-used free-field convective boiling correlations for heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop with phenomenological enhancement factors based on the two phase flow pattern as predicted using the EHD two phase flow pattern map which accounts for the effect of electric field strength on flow pattern redistribution, as described in a previously published paper (Nangle-Smith and Cotton, 2018). A review of the EHD convective boiling experimental literature was conducted to determine confounding factors that can impact the large variance in the reported performance. Flow pattern and applied heat flux were identified as common parameters not maintained constant in the experimental data. Two datasets, including data from the present study, in which flow pattern and applied heat flux are maintained constant were used in the development of the performance correlations. Considerable improvement over previous EHD convective boiling performance correlations was found both in error and the physical significance of coefficients. The correlations were developed for thermodynamic qualities in the range of 20–60% below the onset of dryout or mist flow patterns and for applied heat fluxes < 30 kW/m2. Furthermore, test conditions in this study were chosen to focus on the dielectrophoretic effect and therefore studies with significant electrophoresis were not included. Thus, the correlation is limited to positive applied voltages, saturated flow boiling conditions, and field strengths below the onset of charge injection. The authors recommend this approach for EHD two phase performance correlation development as it is more mechanistic, is analogous to the state-of-the-art approaches for free-field two phase performance, and is likely to yield more accurate models as more experimental data becomes available. Abstract In this paper, numerical simulations are carried out to analyse the influence of geometrical parameters on the heat transfer and flow patterns for six spirally corrugated tubes at turbulent flow (R e = 25 × 10 3 ). Some previous studies are restricted to 2-D analyse or 3-D numerical simulations considering a reduced section length of the tubes as the computational domain in order to reduce the computation cost. The novelty of this paper is to perform a high cost numerical simulation using a computational domain with a length of the tube (L = 2 m) and dimensions similar to those used in commercial applications. In addition, a new non-dimensional parameter, the corrugation shape factor (C S F) is proposed, which takes into account the width of the corrugation, a geometrical dimension obviated in other studies. A 3-D unstructured tetrahedral mesh was created, and a grid independence analysis of the numerical solution was performed. The Realizable k − ε turbulence model with enhanced wall treatment was proposed to model the turbulence. Simulations were validated with experimental data available in the open literature. Regarding the ratio between height and diameter (H / D), the Nusselt number augmentation seems to augment as the H / D increases for low values of H / D (H / D < 0.05), whereas it decreases for values of H / D > 0.05. Considering the cases with the same diameter, in all the analysed cases, the pressure drop and Nusselt number augmentation decrease linearly as the P / D increases as well as both parameters increase linearly as the H / D , S I and C S F increase. The numerical results indicate that the augmentation of the Nusselt number and the friction factor (compared with the smooth tube) increases approximately linearly with the C S F in the range tested in this work (4 < C S F < 18), regardless of the tube diameter. Abstract This paper presents analyses of complex flows and heat transfer induced by twin oblique turbulent slot-jets of different directions (divergent, convergent or parallel) impinging a heated wall. A comparison of the heat transfer characteristics between perpendicular and three cases of twin oblique jets (parallel, convergent and divergent). The twin slot jets are located on a confining adiabatic wall at a distance of 8 slot jet width. Convective heat is investigated numerically examining the effect of Reynolds number (Re) and jet inclination angle (α). This problem is relevant to a wide range of practical applications including nuclear engineering devices, manufacturing, material processing, electronic cooling, drying paper or textile, tempering of glass, etc. All computations are performed using two dimensional large eddy simulations (LES) approach with Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) models. For all directions and inclinations of the jets, the location of the stagnation points is changed and hence, the location and magnitude of the maximum Nusselt number on the heated wall vary. When Reynolds number increases, Nusselt number is improved for all types of inclination. The averaged Nusselt number shows that the perpendicular impingement gives better heat transfer than that of the oblique jets. The poor heat transfer is obtained for the parallel oblique jets. Abstract The paper focuses on the numerical studies of heat transfer and pressure drop in a simulated nuclear fuel rod with three-dimensional surface roughness. Two-dimensional numerical simulations utilizing SST k - ω turbulent model were performed to evaluate heat transfer and pressure drop on the smooth and rough section of the heater rod. The numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained from a heater element which simulates a single Inconel-Nickel fuel rod for pressurized water reactor (PWR). The length of the rod was 2152.6 mm, and an outer diameter 9.5 mm, of which the outer surface of a 304.8 mm long section of the Inconel fuel rod was modified with three-dimensional (Diamond-shaped blocks) surface roughness. The angle of corrugation for each diamond block was 45°, and the length of each side of the diamond block was 1 mm. The numerically computed local heat transfer coefficient, overall Nusselt number, and pressure drop across the test rod shows good agreement with the corresponding experimental results. For the simulated rough surface, heat transfer coefficient was enhanced by 86% at Re = 4.18 × 10 5 as compared to the smooth surface, and pressure drop was found to increase by 15.75% within Re range of 4.50 × 10 4 - 1.07 × 10 5 . In this paper, we experimentally investigated the effect of turbulent intensity on heat transfer in a square rotating channel. The grid generated turbulence is measured by hot-wire, and the heat transfer coefficient is measured by TLCs. In the experiment, the Reynolds number, based on the channel hydraulic diameter ( D = 80 mm ) and the bulk mean velocity ( V m = 1.82 m / s ), is 10,000, and the rotation number ranges from 0 to 0.52. The mean density ratio ( d . r . = ( T w - T b ) / T w ) is about 0.1 in the current work using transparent heater glass (Indium Tin Oxide) to provide uniform heat flux. Two different turbulent intensity of inlet air (0.6% and 5.5%) are taken into consideration to investigate the heat transfer distribution on the leading and trailing side. The results show that turbulent intensity has an effect on heat transfer on both leading and trailing side, especially at rotating conditions. At static conditions, the effect of turbulent intensity on heat transfer is not obvious. However, with the increase of rotation number, in case B with a medium turbulent intensity (Tu) of 5.5%, the Nu/Nu 0 is about 10% higher than that in the case A with low turbulent intensity of 0.6% with the rotation number of 0.52 at X/D = 2 on trailing side. The enhancement of case B decreases along X/D directions. On the leading side, the turbulent intensity has same effect on heat transfer with that on trailing side, but not as prominent as that on the trailing side. In current work, the turbulent intensities at different X/D directions are also presented to explain the phenomenon of heat transfer in the channel. Pool boiling has a heat transfer performance far exceeding that of traditional heat transfer methods, so it has broad application prospects. At present, the mainstream means to improve the boiling performance are mainly to change the heat transfer surface and to change the liquid working medium. Previously, a T-shaped microchannel structure has been designed, whose maximum heat flux was 338% of that of a smooth surface, and whose maximum boiling heat transfer coefficient was 184.7% of that of a smooth surface. The structure of this paper is further developed on the basis of this structure. It is found that the orthogonal channel structure can better improve the heat transfer effect. Specifically, within a certain range, the promotion effect of heat transfer is positively correlated with the increase of fin length. When the wall superheat is 12.3 K, the heat flux of the best orthogonal channel structure S4 is 358% of that of the smooth surface. The maximum heat transfer coefficient of S4 is 11.9 W/(cm2·K), which is 281.3% of that of the smooth surface. In addition, a prediction model is proposed for the structure of this paper, and its prediction error is within 25% under medium and high heat flux. Particle-based moving bed heat exchangers are increasingly playing a significant role in industrial energy conservation and solar energy utilization. However, the moving bed heat exchanger used for cohesive granular materials still needs to be developed. This paper investigates the feasibility of indirect heat transfer of cohesive granular materials through a moving bed heat exchanger. A vibrating moving bed heat exchanger is developed for the metallurgical slag of vanadium-titanium (MSVT) from industry. The experiment demonstrates that the vibrating moving bed heat exchanger can establish an approximate mass flow regime of MSVT in the experimental section. The vibration device designed for the experimental and discharge section effectively resolves bridging and the intermittent collapse of arching in cohesive granular materials. The outer side of the tube is tightly wrapped by MSVT with vibration. Significant differences are observed in the flow and heat transfer behavior of MSVT between the aligned and staggered tubes. The local heat transfer coefficient at the top and bottom of the aligned tubes exhibits much lower sensitivity to flow velocity compared to the staggered tubes. The relationship between Nu −1 and Pe −0.5 or MSVT around the aligned and staggered tubes follows a linear correlation. Compared to aligned tubes, Nu −1 for MSVT in staggered tubes shows an average reduction of 28%. In this paper, the heat transfer characteristics of heat exchange tube (HET) with NH 4 Cl crystallization fouling was studied experimentally. The effects of velocity, temperature and mass flow rate of hot and cold fluids on the overall and local heat transfer characteristics were analyzed. The results indicate that the local heat transfer coefficient around the tube wall decreases first and then increases with the increase of the circumferential angle (θ) under clean condition. At the position of 0°-45°, the local heat transfer coefficient is the largest. At 90°-135°, the local heat transfer coefficient is the smallest. Spray cooling, which has a fast thermal response and low flow rate consumption, is a common and effective thermal management approach for high power electronic systems. Typically, to improve the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) for spray cooling, the target surface wettability is decreased, promoting nucleation boiling by reducing the surface energy barrier for bubble nucleation. However, the merging of bubbles and the formation of a vapor film have limitations in further increasing the critical heat flux (CHF). Hence, maximizing both the HTC and CHF of spray cooling can be mutually exclusive on the same heated surface. This paper presented a novel design for a vapor-liquid separation structure surface. It consisted of lower micropillars that serve as the vapor separation channel. On top of that, there was an upper multi-layer copper micromesh that wicks and spreads the coolant. Additionally, nano-grass attached to the micromesh to enhance capillary force and increase the nucleation sites simultaneously. Subsequently, we calculated the forward velocity and pressure drop of the droplets passing through the copper mesh to study the effects of droplet velocity and capillary force on heat transfer performance. The results show that the forward velocity of the droplets decreases rapidly as the increase of copper mesh layers and it drops to zero when passing through the third mesh. Therefore, the capillary force generated by the copper mesh is another important factor for the atomized droplets to pass through the copper mesh and reach the target surface. We have proven that all the vapor-liquid separation structure surfaces satisfy the condition ΔP cap > ΔP pore + ΔP local. Hence, the synergistic effects of the micropillar, copper micromesh, and nano-grass enable a circulation process of wicking-rewetting-vapor evacuation, which improves the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB), enhances the HTC, and increases the maximum heat flux dissipated by the system. Enhanced HTC (7.94 W/cm2/K) and maximum heat flux (817 W/cm2) were achieved at 1.50 ml/s on the vapor-liquid separation structure surfaces (#200 2-layer), representing an enhancement of 79.6% and 80.0% compared with that for the flat surface and the temperature of the heated surface at the ONB maximum decreased by approximately 30.8 °C. Fluid transport through microvascular networks—a hallmark for homeostasis in living systems—has transcended to engineered materials, primarily made possible because of modern manufacturing advancements. Vascular-enabled multifunctionality, including thermal regulation and self-healing, holds great potential for extending the lifetime of structural materials and expanding the operational envelope. Prior studies on vascular-based active cooling use a "combined" heat transfer coefficient (HTC): a single parameter lumps convection and radiation effects. Although the resulting mathematical models are linear—an attractive feature for computational modeling, the combined coefficient approach may not be accurate or even applicable if the operating temperature is unknown, which is the case with many thermal regulation applications (e.g., space probes). In this paper, we illustrate the remarked limitations of the lumped approach and advocate the need to use a decoupled HTC by splitting convective and radiative heat transfer modes. We show the broad applicability of the proposed method by applying it to three material systems: glass and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites and an additive manufactured metal. We show, using numerical simulations, the differences in the predictions from the decoupled approach with that of the combined HTC; these differences are prominent at higher heat fluxes. Also, the decoupling has enabled us to establish a scaling law that allows transferring of solutions fields across material systems, strengthening further the validity and utility of our approach. This work's significance is two-fold. First , the research is fundamental, providing accurate measurement protocols for critical model parameters. Electrowetting has attracted significant attention in condensation, but its application in enhancing pool boiling heat transfer is very limited. In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method is adopted to investigate the pool boiling heat transfer on electrowetting surfaces with different electrode configurations. The wettability of the baseline hydrophobic surface above the electrode will change to hydrophilicity once a voltage is applied. The differences in heat transfer and boiling phenomenon between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces without electrodes are illustrated firstly by the density contours and boiling curves. Then, the possibility of electrowetting in improving the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF) is verified by comparing with baseline hydrophobic and patterned-coating surfaces, and different boiling heat transfer regimes are illustrated in detail. Nowadays, a bio-inspired heat exchanger incorporating a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure has demonstrated great potential in the fields of new energy research and aerospace, which necessitates achieving a balance between low volume and high heat transfer efficiency while maintaining low pressure drop. In this paper, the adjustable heat efficiency of the heat exchanger with TPMS in gradient thicknesses is specially designed. A steady-state conjugate heat transfer (CHT) model is coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. In addition, the temperature profile and velocity streamline are also checked to analyze the fluid flow behavior of the radiator. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficient of the Gyroid with gradient level set values is 26.02–60.10% higher than that of the uniform Gyroid model, and the pressure drop is decreased by 9.66–18.05%. Both high heat transfer efficiency and low pressure drop can be achieved when the thickness is 0.2–0.3 mm and Re is 100–125. The heat exchangers with a TPMS thickness gradient in the ratio of 2:4:6 demonstrate a remarkable enhancement in overall heat transfer efficiency, achieving a 30.22% improvement compared to those with a TPMS thickness gradient in 6:4:2. With the fast progress of new technologies applied to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and fifth generation communication, the researches on the heat dissipation of high-power electronic devices have concentrated on the two-phase flows in the microchannel, with the phase change used to achieve excellent cooling efficiency. The objective of this paper is to conduct the computational and experimental studies for investigating the thermal-fluid behaviors of subcooled flow boiling in microchannels. In the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, the numerical solver is built in ANSYS/Fluent® implementing the multiphase formulation with the full consideration of the effects of turbulence, surface tension, and phase change to appropriately imitate the interfacial movements between liquid water and vapor for probing the subcooled boiling and bubble nucleation processes over the microchannel. In the experimental investigation, a syringe pump and a programmable DC power supply is employed to regulate the heat flux and subcooled temperature for determining the heat transfer and pressure drop outcomes across the microchannel at varied aspect ratios and hydraulic diameters. In addition, this study sets up a high-speed camera with a LED fiber optical light source to acquire the close-up observation images over the complex flow boiling phenomena. The accuracy of CFD predictions is assessed by comparison against both the measured heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops as well as the photo-captured interfacial behaviors. The numerical simulations are then conducted to resolve the temperature gradients on the heating wall surface due to intense disturbances incited by the confined bubbly flow and sweeping flow at high aspect ratios, enhancing the cooling performance over the microchannels. The experimental measurements show that a reduction in inlet subcooling from 65 to 50 °C tends to enlarge the average heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop by 21.5 and 17.1%, respectively. The design impact study also reveals the average heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop at an aspect ratio of 5 greater than those at an aspect ratio of 2 by up to 41.1 and 27.2%, respectively. In contrast, increasing hydraulic diameter from 0.92 to 1.38 mm can strengthen the thermal and frictional outcomes by 17.2 and 20.3%. Through mathematical modeling and simulation of heat transfer properties of opening combination rotor blade, heat transfer performance and fluid flow characteristics of ordinary rotor blade tubes and opening combination rotor blade with axial widths of W (W = 0.25 R, 0.5 R, 0.75 R) are analyzed using field synergy principle and comprehensive heat transfer evaluation coefficient (PEC).The results demonstrate that the Nusselt number of opening combination rotor blade is 19%-23% lower than that of ordinary rotor blade. The resistance coefficient of opening combination rotor blade with axial width of 0.25 R is significantly lower by 33%-43%. Opening combination rotor blade with axial width of 0.25 R has a significantly lower resistance coefficient of 72%-78%. Its PEC value is between 1.23–1.28 with significantly improved overall heat transfer performance. In summary, opening combination rotor blade with axial width of 0.25 R has the most significant heat transfer effect and has a high reference significance for engineering design. This paper describes the experimental analysis of aerosol heat transfer coefficient (AHTC), pressure drop, and friction factor of SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and MgO nanoaerosol in the pipe flow with the volumetric flow rate of 30 lpm, 40 lpm, and 50 lpm. The SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and MgO nanoparticles are characterized by using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and MgO nanoparticles are dispersed in the air at the particle volume concentrations of 0.5 %, 1.0 %, and 5.0 %, respectively. The thermo-physical characteristics of nanoaerosols are determined using empirical correlations. The variation in temperature, pressure, and flow rates are measured by using the thermocouples, pressure gauges, and flow meters installed in the experimental setup. The temperature readings are recorded by using the data acquisition system. The experimental results indicate the enhancement of forced convective AHTC with the increase in the nanoparticle volume concentration and the volumetric flow rate of the nanoaerosol. At volumetric flow rates of 30 lpm, 40 lpm, and 50 lpm, respectively, increasing the particle volume fraction from 0.5 % to 5.0 % improves the average heat transfer coefficient by 92 %, 84 %, and 91 % for SiO 2 nanoaerosol, 72 %, 50 %, and 37 % for TiO 2 nanoaerosol, and 50 %, 67 %, and 72 % for MgO nanoaerosol. The pressure drop of the nanoaerosol increases by 2, 2.33, and 3 times, respectively, and the friction factor decreases by 27.99, 15.99, and 11.1 times for SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and MgO nanoaerosol by increasing the flow rate from 30 lpm to 50 lpm. For the SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and MgO nanoaerosols, increasing the particle volume concentration from 0.5 % to 5.0 % increases the pressure drop by 6, 7.66, and 10 times, respectively, and the friction factor by 32.03, 19.08, and 5.67 times. By considering all of these factors, it is concluded that the performance evaluation criteria are lowest for 0.5 % TiO 2 and highest for 5.0 % MgO. The significant finding of this research is that the AHTC increases with the increase in the particle volume concentration and volumetric flow rate. Pool boiling, as an efficient phase-change heat transfer method, has attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, the bubble dynamics behavior (BDB) and heat transfer characteristics of pool boiling at sub-atmospheric pressure (sub-ATM) are significantly different from those at or above standard atmospheric pressure (std-ATM). This paper presents experimental results of BDB and heat transfer characteristics of pool boiling at sub-ATM in the range of 30–120 kPa. High-speed backlight imaging technique was adopted. The results show that with the decrease of boiling pressure, the diameter and near circularity coefficient of bubble departure increase, and the frequency and aspect ratio decrease. With the decline in pressure, the critical heat flux (CHF) of pool boiling on the surface of the electric heater decreases. Specifically, the CHF at 120 kPa is 23.2% higher than that at 40 kPa. In the applied mathematical modelling of heat transfer systems, the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is one of the most important parameters. This paper proposes a combination of the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) with particle filter Sequential Importance Resampling (PF-SIR) to estimate the time-dependent HTC in two-dimensional transient inverse heat conduction problems from non-standard boundary integral measurements. These measurements ensure the unique solvability of the boundary coefficient identification problem. Numerical results show high performance on several test cases with both linear and nonlinear Robin boundary conditions, supporting the synergy between the MFS and simulation-based particle filter sequential analysis methods. In this paper, the effects of electric field strength (applied voltage) on wall temperature, heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux (CHF) of mini-channel heat sink are investigated. The bubble departure diameter and incipience location in the mini-channel heat sink under different electric field strengths are recorded using a high-speed camera. Combined with the theory of electrohydrodynamic (EHD), the behavior of bubbles appearing in mini-channel heat sink under the action of electric field is analyzed. It is observed by visualization that the number of bubbles in the channel increases and the volume of bubbles becomes smaller under the electric field force. Research shows that when the voltage is 200V, the heat transfer coefficient of the mini-channel heat sink increases by a maximum of 178%, and the critical heat flux can be increased by a maximum of 123%. • An adaptive heuristic fluid-solid interface condition is proposed for the first time. This new condition, called "X-R", has been developed to switch automatically between the Dirichlet-Robin (D-R) and Neumann-Robin (N-R) conditions on the basis of the Biot number. • A temporal interpolation of the fluid conditions for dealing with "non-coupling instants" is defined on the basis of a physics-based approach by naturally considering the flux-temperature linearity. This approach replaces the generally adopted time-dependent linearity, which cannot be justified. • The first test case demonstrates that the adaptive interface condition always produces smooth solutions, which is not the case when fixed conditions like D-R or N-R are adopted. • The second test case shows that the physics-base approach based on the flux-temperature linearity is by far the most satisfactory. However, this interpolation method remains valid only if each ramp defined initially remains in a linear domain. • Indeed, a full transient cycle, entirely based on the existence of particular time points can lead to non-linear problems, difficult to deal with. • As a direct consequence of the previous point and shown in the third test case, the initial problem can be not well-posed. In this case, adding a small number of temporal points can keep the coupling algorithm in a quasi-linear domain. This paper is devoted to the study of numerical methods used in the analysis of a thermal transient flight cycle. Two priorities are stressed. The first one concerns a stability issue, namely the fluid-solid interface conditions. The main properties of the Dirichlet-Robin and Neumann-Robin conditions are first recalled, before proposing for the first time an adaptive heuristic condition combining them. The second line of research is dedicated to an accuracy issue, the temporal interpolation of the fluid conditions for dealing with non-coupling instants. We propose here to adopt a physics-based approach by naturally considering the flux-temperature linearity. Then, using a simple numerical test under severe thermal boundary conditions, three test cases are proposed. The first one demonstrates that the adaptive interface condition always produces smooth solutions. The other two cases show that the physical interpolation approach is much more accurate than the one based on temporal linearity, using a costly but accurate reference solution built for the validation. Moreover, important improvements were made by adequately defining the integral contribution of the boundary condition using the Gauss points in the finite element solid code. It was also revealed that a relevant approximation of the heat transfer requires a sufficiently fine solid mesh at the interface. Finally, potential improvements are proposed at the end of this paper and more particularly two other interface conditions. The multiple orifice configurations had a central orifice and a satellite orifices placed in the pitch circle. The synthetic jet actuator had central orifice with 0, 3, 4, 5 and 6 orifices placed in the diameters of the relative pitch circle p / d = 2.5, 3 and 4. A total of 13 various geometric configurations were tested experimentally. In the multiple orifice configurations, the total cross-section area was approximately equal to the cross-section area of the single orifice configuration. The input power delivered to the synthetic jet actuator was maintained constant and equal to 3.00 W. The synthetic jet actuator energetic efficiency, Reynolds number, equivalent Reynolds number, radial and axial distributions of pressure coefficient, and heat transfer characteristic were presented. The synthetic jet issuing from multiple orifice plate merged at some axial distance, creating a single axisymmetric jet. The merging jet axial distances were determined for all investigated configurations. In the present paper, the integral quantities averaged over all orifices cross section area, or over impingement plate much larger than total orifices area, were analyzed for the purpose of objective comparison. This paper presents the local heat transfer coefficients of R290 (propane) and R1270 (propylene) condensation inside a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE). A new test section was designed for measuring the local heat transfer coefficient in refrigerant two-phase heat transfer in a BPHE. The test section includes two corrugated plates instrumented with 36 T-type thermocouples for measuring the local plate surface temperature, the local heat flux and the local heat transfer coefficient in 9 positions along the refrigerant channel. The experimental tests were carried out at a condensation temperature of 30°C, in the refrigerant mass flux range 5 − 17.5 kg m−2s−1 with an inlet vapour quality around 1.00 and an outlet vapour quality ranging from 0.13 to 0.17. A transition point between gravity-dominated and forced convection condensation was found for a refrigerant mass velocity around 10 kg m−2s−1. The experimental data was compared against theoretical models: Nusselt (1916) analysis for vertical surface shows a fair agreement with the data in gravity-dominated condensation, while Longo et al. (2015) model predicts the data in forced convection condensation with a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) around 20%. The experimental data were further compared with some original measurements obtained with R404A and with data available for R410A. By utilizing airborne hydrocarbon fuels working as coolant, active regenerative cooling method is a significant method for maintaining the reliability of the scramjet engine components. At high temperatures, the pyrolysis of hydrocarbon fuels occurs and provides extra heat absorption capacity. Investigation on coupled heat transfer and pyrolysis of fuels is essential for the design of cooling channels. This paper aims to study the pyrolysis effects on convective heat transfer of supercritical aviation kerosene RP-3 in vertical upwards. Firstly, a simple molecular kinetic model was proposed for RP-3 pyrolysis. Then the performance of two Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models with three constant turbulent Prandtl numbers in predicting the fluid-thermal behaviors of reacting flow were evaluated. At last, the mechanisms of pyrolysis effect on heat transfer in the heat transfer deterioration region and the cracked region were investigated. The results showed that the pyrolysis affected heat transfer from two aspects: providing heat absorb or release capacity through the endothermic (exothermic) pyrolysis reactions, changing the fuel properties by the variations in composition. In the heat transfer deterioration region, the effect of heat absorption dominants over the effect of additional decreased in density and specific heat capacity by pyrolysis on the heat transfer, thus a lower wall temperature and larger heat transfer coefficients were observed when considering pyrolysis. In the cracked region, under the present condition, the competitive outcome of the above two led to an improved heat transfer by pyrolysis, and the improved effect first increased and then decreased as the fuel conversion increasing. Ice slurry is attracting increasing attention owing to its high cooling rate, heat transfer capability and energy storage density. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of ice slurry flow and heat transfer characterization in typical components of cooling systems including pipes, fittings, valves, pumps and heat exchangers by experimental measurements, analytical quantifications and numerical simulations. Generally, the experimental measurements concerned the flow pattern, pressure drop, rheology and heat transfer of ice slurry, and the measurement data were usually used to develop and validate analytical and numerical models. The analytical quantification was commonly performed by the principles of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, which simplified the multiphase flow into a single-phase flow and can predict the friction factors and heat transfer coefficients. The numerical simulation employed multiphase flow dynamics to establish the governing equations for ice particles and carrier fluids in ice slurry flow and heat transfer with phase change, thus providing predictions on different physical fields of ice slurry flow. It indicated that the experimental measurement, analytical quantification and numerical simulation presented different advantages and disadvantages in describing ice slurry flow and heat transfer. The combination of numerical simulation with the experiment measurement and analytical quantification is promising to improve the performance of each single method in terms of accuracy, efficiency and generality. The current consensus is that pool boiling is initiated on nucleation sites on the surface and that increased heat transfer coefficients are a result of mixing produced by vapor bubbles in the thermal boundary layer. Visualization of the boiling process substantiates this conclusion. Current understanding of the influence of various quantities on the convective heat transfer coefficient is enumerated with respect to the underlying thermodynamics and energy transport. Prior research on flow boiling is limited in comparison, and much more needs to be done with respect to the boiling and enhancement mechanism. Various models for boiling of emulsions are discussed, including a RANS model that incorporates droplet contact with the heated surface, collisions between droplets and bubbles, and chain boiling due to collision during the boiling process. Key modeling elements are how interphase transport and droplet interactions affect nucleation rates and droplet behavior within the viscous and thermal boundary layers at and near a heated surface. It is clear now that boiling of a suspended phase with a lower saturation temperature than the continuous phase can produce marked increases in overall heat transfer coefficients. A re-conceptualization of two-phase heat exchange equipment is a future possibility, and various applications are identified. Boiling of dilute emulsions may be an attractive cooling strategy when restrictions on size, weight and pumping power must be addressed, such as in thermal management of avionics systems.
