Greenhouse gas emissions have been recognized as one of the major cause of the global warming phenomena. The built environment accounts for more than 40% of the overall energy consumption and 36% of the overall CO2 emissions in Europe. Recent studies show that housing is one of the most responsible sector for world ecological impacts. The European Parliament developed the concept of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), characterized by a very low energy demand and a high renewable energy on-site production. In fact, energy efficiency is the first step towards the ambitious aim to reduce of 80% by 2050 the EU carbon emissions. The zero-energy building target is an achievable goal, which relies on a careful design that encompasses a synergy between passive and low-energy strategies. However, considering the whole life cycle of buildings, NZEBs reduce the operational energy close to zero, increasing the relevancy of the embodied energy, which occurs during the construction phase. Balancing the values of the operational and embodied energy is necessary to minimize buildings footprint on the environment. In this paper the renovation and re-use of the Atika building, a demonstrative energy-efficient building, is presented as case study of an environmental efficient methodology for energy retrofitting. Current indoor thermal environment is usually automatically controlled based on a temperature set-point given by room occupants or building managers. However, investigation shows that many temperature set-points are far from the comfortable temperature range recommended by design handbooks. Such unreasonable temperature set-points will result in not only uncomfortable indoor thermal environment, but also waste of cooling or heating energy. The authors have proposed a methodology of satisfaction based control to take place of the traditional set-point based control. This paper describes the experimental comparison results between satisfaction based indoor thermal environment control and set-point based control. Two test-beds were set up and a series of experiments was conducted to compare control performances, user acceptances, user work performances and system energy consumptions of the set-point based and satisfaction based control. The comparison results show that the satisfaction based control can achieve more stable thermal environment. Both of the two control methods can get relatively high scores regarding user acceptance and work performance. There are no statistically significant differences for user acceptance and work performance between two control methods. However, satisfaction based control consumed 15.3% and 11.9% less energy at two test-beds respectively than set-point based control due to more reasonable temperature settings given by the satisfaction based control. A great number of low carbon technologies have been developed in the last decades. The use of such technologies promises good indoor environment for the building's occupants, lower energy consumption and carbon emissions. However, there are uncertainties related to payback periods and usability constraints of low carbon technologies. In addition, past and current research has shown differences between the expected and the actual performance of buildings, both in terms of energy consumption and indoor comfort. For a better understanding of differences between expected and actual performance of buildings, it is necessary to investigate the energy consumption, the behaviour of the occupants and their interaction with new technologies, and the resulting indoor comfort. Monitoring building performance can help to reduce the uncertainties related to the building performance of buildings. This paper presents an overview and classification of data collection methods to monitor the energy consumption, thermal comfort of occupants and the operation of buildings in use. Data collection methods and techniques are categorised and linked to specific methods to evaluate building performance and recommendations are made to set up building monitoring research. By identifying the most effective methods to monitor buildings, this research aims at embedding performance monitoring in standard practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
