The pulp and paper industry consumes enormous quality of freshwater, leading to wastewater. It must be treated to remove pollutants, particularly residual dyestuffs, before releasing them to water bodies to avoid adverse environmental effects. The traditional wastewater treatment methods used for the pulp and paper industry are less efficient in colour and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The current study is aimed at developing a novel catalyst for the catalytic ozonation of pulp and paper wastewater with better colour and COD removal for sustainable resources of clean water. The proposed catalyst is impregnated by iron on natural zeolites. Various parameters such as catalyst dose, pH, ozone dose, initial COD concentration, and reaction time are studied and optimized. The performance was evaluated by comparing the results with the single ozonation process (SOP) and catalytic ozonation process (COP). The highest COD and colour reduction efficiencies have been achieved, i.e., 71%, and 88% at a natural pH of 6.8. The proposed process achieved higher COD and colour efficiencies than the single ozonation process and catalytic ozonation process using raw zeolites. The improvement in efficiencies are 23% and 29% for SOP and 17% and 19% for COP, respectively. Hence, the results proposed the sustainability and applicability of COP to treat paper and pulp sector effluent. Background: Invasive coronary angiography plays a pivotal role in the management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Wide variability in its use has been previously documented. Our aim was to investigate whether coronary angiography is being used appropriately prior to discharge after ACS, taking into account relative contraindications of the procedure.Methods: Patients presenting with ACS in 2015 to two large, demographically distinct New Zealand (NZ) District Health Boards (DHBs)-Counties Manukau (CMDHB) and Waitemata (WDHB)-were identified from the NZ Ministry of Health National Dataset using ICD-10-AM codes. Patients' clinical data were obtained from the electronic and paper clinical records. Pre-defined relative contraindications to coronary angiography were identified.Results: Of the 3,809 patient admissions coded with ACS, 600 patient admissions (300 from each DHB) were reviewed. Sixty-one (61) (10%) did not meet diagnostic criteria for ACS on review of clinical data and were excluded. Of the patients reviewed, 55% received coronary angiography, with a higher rate in WDHB than CMDHB (61% and 49%, respectively) and 37.5% had relative contraindications documented. The overall rate of angiography was appropriately high in those without a relative contraindication (90.3%) and low in those with one (7.4%). There were fewer patients with relative contraindications in WDHB than CMDHB (36.7% and 48.5%) but the rate of angiography in those with (6.9% and 7.8%) and without (92.5% and 87.5%) contraindications in the two DHBs was similar.Conclusions: The decision to offer coronary angiography after ACS appears to be appropriately influenced by the presence or absence of relative contraindications. Approximately 60% of patients had no documented relative contraindication suggesting that this may be an appropriate angiography rate in New Zealand practice. New Zealand's space sector is at the early stages of growth but already attracts 1.5% of global private investment in space and contributes NZD 1.75 billion per year in revenue to the national economy. Growth has in part been due to the country's desirable location for space operations due to a combination of geographic advantages, with its clear seas and skies and access to a wide range of launch angles, a skilled workforce, and strong government financial incentives. There are however challenges to future space activities such as the risk to long-term access and use of Earth's orbital environment, specifically from space debris and a growing challenge to the whole-of-life of space operations, from the climate emergency and biodiversity crises. Consequently, there is increasing global motivation and urgency to quantify environmental consequences of space activities, which have historically been omitted from legislative and regulatory requirements. This paper provides a summary of the commercial development of New Zealand's space sector and where appropriate environmental regulation and legislation may have been overlooked, as well as outlining broader environmental concerns of space operations. New Zealand's emerging space industry offers a unique opportunity to integrate international best practices for environment and sustainability at a foundational level, for example, the European Space Agency's Clean Space Initiative and their Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool and Eco-design Framework. These types of tools provide valuable sources of information to support policy and business decisions. This paper provides a case study for an environmental LCA for a New Zealand designed and launched CubeSat which is the most launched satellite type from New Zealand. The case study indicates how the LCA can be used to identify environmental hotspots during the preliminary and detailed design phases as well as the launch event. Barriers and gaps in data collection have also been identified. Aotearoa New Zealand's emerging New Space economy provides an opportunity for key actors to focus on space and sustainability issues beyond space debris. The conflict between competing definitions and paradigms of sustainability highlights the importance of diverse values, assumptions, and drivers of change that shape the normative understanding of space sustainability issues. In light of climate change, zero carbon refurbishment for existing buildings is imperative for maximising carbon emission reductions. Due to the increasing complexity of reducing carbon emissions for existing buildings, there is a need for a more collaborative and integrative approach. Extensive research has shown the importance, benefits, and challenges of collaboration and integration in implementing sustainable buildings. However, little attention has been paid to investigating collaboration and integration in refurbishment projects that focus on reducing life cycle carbon emissions. This paper explores the collaboration and integration in the decision-making process towards zero carbon refurbishment by examining three real-life case studies in New Zealand. The findings resulted from an interactive cross-case analysis using replication logic within and among cases. Empirically, the study emphasises the importance of (1) organisational commitment and compatibility of team members, (2) the timely involvement of key stakeholders, (3) the highest level of integration in the design process, and (4) a centralised and integrated information system. The paper also divulges the current practices and challenges faced in the integration process, where lessons learnt are identified for future refurbishment projects. A collaboration and integration framework towards successfully delivering building projects towards zero carbon is proposed. In this study, we applied a hazard zone methodology in the context of coastal archaeological heritage for a selected region of Aotearoa (Te Tai Tokerau/Northland). Historical coastal change analyses reveal that most beaches in the region have been stable or slightly accretionary over the past ∼80 years, but a reversal of this trend is likely under the projected SLR, which is expressed in the coastal erosion hazard zones. Our analyses indicate that ∼8 % (155) of coastal archaeological sites in Te Tai Tokerau/Northland may be at risk of erosion with a relatively modest 20 cm of SLR, which is expected for the region by 2040, and ∼19 % (356) of sites are threatened by 1 m of SLR. Migration has been recognized as an important determinant of child health outcomes including childhood vaccination status. This paper aims to examine the association between parental migration status and a less studied aspect of child immunization outcomes, namely timeliness, within the context of New Zealand (NZ), a country characterized by a substantial proportion of its resident population born overseas. Additionally, the study explored the impact of residential duration on children's immunization timeliness. The data was taken from a large, representative population-based cohort study in NZ (Growing Up in NZ study). A total of 6156 children and their parents, comprising 2241 foreign-born and 3915 NZ-born mothers and a sub-group of their partners were included in the analysis. The survey data was linked with the National Immunization Register dataset. Timely immunization was defined as receiving two vaccines at each scheduled vaccination point (at six-week, three-month, and five-month, totaling six doses of vaccines) within 30 days of their due date. We examined the associations between parental migration status, maternal residential duration, and child immunization timeliness while controlling for socio-economic variations. The results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). The findings revealed that after adjustment for socioeconomic differences, children of foreign-born mothers exhibited higher odds of receiving all six studied vaccine doses on time compared to children of native-born mothers (AOR 1.51, 95 %CI:1.27–1.78). Similarly, having a foreign-born father was also significantly associated with timely completion of all six vaccine doses. Children of recent immigrants who had resided in the country for less than five years demonstrated higher odds of timely vaccination of all six vaccine doses compared to children of settled immigrants who had lived in the country for five or more years (AOR 1.65, 95 %CI: 1.25–2.19). This study revealed a significant pattern in NZ where immigrants exhibited higher rates of timely immunization for their children compared to native-born parents. However, the findings also underscore the importance of providing support to settled immigrants, as their children experienced declines in timely vaccination rates compared to children of recent immigrants and even those born to NZ-born parents. The current medical practice in treating Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using Drug Eluting Transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) technique is limited only to hydrophilic ionizable drugs, that can be attached ionically to the oppositely charged beads. This limitation has forced physicians to subscribe the more hydrophobic, first treatment option drugs, like sorafenib systemically via the oral route, thus flooding the patient system with a very powerful, non-specific, multiple-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is associated with notorious side effects. In this paper, a new modality is introduced, where highly charged, drug loaded liposomes are added to oppositely charged DEBs in a manner causing them to "explode" and the drug is eventually attached to the beads in the lipid patches covering their surfaces; therefore we call them "Explosomes". After fully describing the preparation process and in vitro characterization, this manuscript delves into an in vivo pharmacokinetic study over 50 New Zealand rabbits, where explosomal loading is challenged vs oral as well as current practice of emulsifying sorafenib in lipiodol. Over 14 days of follow up, and compared to other groups, explosomal loading of SRF on embolic beads proved to cause a slower release pattern with longer T max , lower C max and less washout to general circulation in healthy animals. This paper explores how political-institutional factors influence the transition towards automated vehicles (AVs) in New Zealand (NZ). Using the lens of 'mobilities paradigm' and analysing policy documents along with interviews data from government officials, the findings reveal the complexity of governing AVs transition due to fragmented responsibility, contested visions, and high interdependency across government agencies. The findings suggest that strong political leadership coupled with infrastructure investments and building regulators' capability are important catalysts of change towards AVs transition in NZ. The paper concludes that the complex governance environment, and the central government action and inaction to set priority for the AVs agenda, may hinder or facilitate a smooth transition towards AVs in NZ. This paper contributes to the mobilities paradigm by enriching our understanding of the political-institutional challenges associated with the emergence of AVs and offers illuminating policy guidance to better inform decision-making around governing the future transition towards AVs. The numerical non-linear FE models are developed using the commercial FE software package ABAQUS to simulate laboratory experiments and calibrated against the test results. The experimental program was performed by the authors at the University of Sydney and the detailed test results are fully described in a companion paper. The calibrated numerical FE models with actual mechanical properties and measured geometric imperfections in analyses accurately predict the experimental results and behaviours, including flexural and flexural-torsional buckling as well as local-global interaction buckling failure modes. A parametric study is subsequently performed to extend the data range by varying cross-section dimensions and member lengths. The effects of loading eccentricity positions and initial geometric imperfections are also considered in the parametric study. The experimental and numerical results are compared with design strength predictions from current Australian/New Zealand, American and European specifications for aluminium structures in the companion paper. In this paper, the Direct Strength Method (DSM) for the design of compression members as per the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4600 for cold-formed steel structures is adopted for comparison. The DSM design rules for cold-formed steel compression members are found to provide more accurate predictions than those of current specifications for aluminium structures and therefore used to propose improved design equations for cold-rolled aluminium alloy columns. To fabricate these sections, the roll-forming process used in cold-formed steel production has been employed, which has proven to be more cost-effective than the conventional extrusion process. This paper describes a series of compression tests to investigate member buckling behaviour and ultimate strengths of cold-rolled aluminium alloy 5052-36 channel columns. Twenty-eight specimens of three commercially available sections (C10030, C25025 and C40030) were tested at the University of Sydney. Two configurations of end boundary conditions were specially designed to capture flexural, flexural-torsional and local-global interaction buckling failure modes. Prior to testing, initial geometric imperfections were measured using a laser scanning method, and flat/corner coupons were tested to determine compressive and tensile strengths of the aluminium alloy material. The experimental results are compared with ultimate column strength predictions by current Australian/New Zealand, North American and European design specifications for aluminium structures. Additionally, the test results provide data for calibration of finite element models of cold-rolled aluminium structural members for use in parametric and similar studies. The aim of stock assessment is to provide managers with an understanding of the biomass and age-/size-composition of a stock, stock status (ideally relative to target and reference points), and to support management decision making, often through projections and application of harvest control rules. Stock assessments are increasingly being used to form the basis for the operating models used to evaluate the ability of management strategies to achieve the goals of fisheries management. Stock assessments for rock lobsters were among the first to adopt size-structured population models as the basis for stock assessment, and population model-based stock assessments have been used extensively to evaluate management strategies for rock lobster stocks in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. This paper identifies how closely population model-based stock assessments for rock lobsters satisfy the guidelines identified for best practices for conducting stock assessments during meetings of, for example, the Center for the Advancement of Population Assessment Methodology and papers identifying best practice guidelines for stock assessment. The complexity of farming and rural communities poses challenges to research and extension initiatives seeking industry-wide change. The effectiveness of these initiatives depends on factors ranging from individual psychology to the science of effects. Tools like intervention logic models, which visualise the causal chain of an intervention through to its impact, are useful for programme planning but are of limited usefulness for comparing the relative benefits of initiatives. Benefit-cost analysis can quantify relative benefits, but applications often oversimplify the causal chain and leave key impacts unquantified. This paper aims to develop a benefit-cost analysis modelling framework that both captures the important causal logic from intervention to impact as well as quantifying and monetising key benefit categories. We apply the framework to value the impacts of 'Hill Country Futures', a programme of research and extension designed to assist in future-proofing the environmental sustainability, profitability, and well-being of New Zealand's hill country farmers, their farm systems, and communities. The QUICK (Quantifying and Understanding the Impact of Capability and Knowledge) model uses an agent-based simulation to represent processes of skill development and practice improvement that result from both extension activities for management and research tools as well as the use of those tools. We calibrate the model using a combination of an external predictive adoption model, an expert workshop, and researcher judgment. We use a choice experiment to value simulated changes in financial, environmental, community, and well-being outcomes. We explore how optimising the programme of extension interventions through targeting could increase impact. Our results suggest that the benefits of the 'Hill Country Futures' programme outweigh the costs by a factor of 13.5. We find that targeting extension efforts towards building awareness could be slightly more beneficial than targeting both awareness and skill development. We find no evidence that targeting extension efforts towards the best resource would be beneficial. This paper combines desirable features from intervention logic models, benefit-cost analysis, choice modelling, and agent-based models to value the benefits of a large programme of research and extension. It highlights that such modelling can be useful for evaluating both planned and complete programmes. Preventing wildlife from becoming oiled is the priority in an oiled wildlife response. This is achieved through diverting spilled oil away from wildlife, or hazing, deterring, or excluding wildlife from oiled areas. This paper undertakes an international review of techniques deployed for hazing and deterring birds, the taxa most affected, during oil spills. Using these techniques as a baseline it then compares what techniques are used in New Zealand at airports, in agriculture, and at waste management facilities, to assess what could readily be deployed in New Zealand during oil spills, as currently there are few options planned for. As international literature suggests, the best technique is to use a variety of methods for targeted species to reduce habituation. Gifts are a powerful way to acknowledge and strengthen interpersonal relationships. As with any relational space, gifting plays various roles in forming and maintaining relationships in political contexts, but its contribution to relationship-building has attracted little attention. This paper examines how politicians in Aotearoa New Zealand both engage with gifting and how they navigate the perceptions of others. Four current members of parliament (MPs) and six retired MPs participated in semi-structured interviews with questions on common practices and common understandings about political gifting. Their responses indicate their use of four different processes: formal processes are the guidelines provided by the government on gifting, but when these are insufficient, contextual processes regarding perceptions of the media, constituents or colleagues are used, or, alternatively, MPs rely on personal values or view gifting in terms of transactional processes with both parties receiving benefits. The paper explores perceptions and complexities of a sequence of gifts during events (event gifting). There is a growing literature on the cultural capacities influencing communities' adaptation to environmental and social change, including the temporal frameworks they draw on for timely action. This paper focuses on seasonal cultures, and how they enable communities on the Coromandel Peninsula to interpret and adapt practical timings to disrupted patterns of seasonal rhythms. The paper develops and applies a conceptual framework of seasonal cultures as perceived rhythmic patterns practiced by communities as cultural repertoires for action, emphasising the ways cultures evolve as patterns are contested and change. This concept steered critical, mixed-method ethnographic study with communities on the peninsula over two years. The research found that Coromandel communities' cultures make seasonal change visible as long-term shifts and asynchrony between rhythmic patterns, which they linked to climatic change, environmental degradation, colonisation and globalisation, and shifting relations between society and the environment. As seasonal patterns fail to hold, communities deploy a combination of strategies for re-configuring seasonal rhythms through their practices: (i) maintaining established, institutionalised schemas of activity while coping with seasonal variability; (ii) season-proofing activities from environmental rhythms; or (iii) re-learning and recalibrating cultures to mutable configurations of rhythms in a highly modified environment. According to the international literature, small towns are most likely to reorient following structural change if they are rich in natural or built amenity, accessible to large urban areas and have local capacity for change. However, not all places have these characteristics. Focusing on places less blessed with these features, this paper develops a conceptualisation that extends beyond these simplistic empirical regularities/characteristics and enhances understanding of the processes underlying small town change. Drawing on two cases from both the UK and New Zealand, key drivers for small town reorientation are explored, their meaning illustrated in terms of the likelihood of reorientation of the towns' development trajectory and the key policy choices emerging are highlighted. Whilst small town reorientation is inherently unpredictable, positive forces for change are likely to occur within most small towns. Informed by the adaptive cycle model and how this links to observed case realities, the findings suggest the need for an emergent strategic approach that focuses on supporting a local rediscovery/re-imagination of potential, local adaptive processes of emergence and connectivity as it emerges. This paper argues that aroma hops are a neoliberal crop par excellence , shaping new political ecologies and economies of hops production and marketing globally. The value of aroma hops has grown significantly over the last decade. The aesthetic and chemical properties of new aroma varieties are central to the new cultural and political milieu of the rapidly expanding craft beer brewing sector. In response, some hop-growing regions are expanding their production, while others are re-orienting to new market dynamics or attempting to maintain their existing production traditions. This paper will draw from qualitative fieldwork in the USA, Aotearoa (New Zealand), the UK, and Germany to explore the political, social and economic effects of the massive and rapid growth of aroma hops production. Developing the concept of an aesthetic regime , we will consider how the botany of hop plants have influenced the development of new power dynamics around distinction and control of aroma hop varieties. This generated a new aesthetic regime that reshapes regional infrastructures in breeding, cooperative marketing, and trade, while bringing regions into new relations with each other. The mobility of livestock in modern farming systems is connected with the geographical spread of animal disease. Government attempts to control this geography increasingly rely on practices of self-government that create new farming subjectivities to shape farming conduct. However, studies show that perceptions of luck are influential in shaping behaviour to environmental hazards, as are socio-cultural concepts of 'good farming' in which forms of cultural capital define appropriate conduct. This paper examines how luck is woven into farmers' understandings of disease and the conduct of 'good farming' in relation to government attempts to restrict the movement of cattle. Drawing on 41 qualitative interviews with farmers in Aotearoa New Zealand, the paper examines understandings of good farming in relation to a metrological system to encourage fewer high-risk livestock movements. Data reveal that luck is an important resource in shaping farmers' perceptions of animal disease, justifying their disease control behaviour; responses to practices of self-government; and allowing farmers to displace blame and rely on experts to manage animal disease. A focus on luck also highlights a range of competing versions of good farming and the importance of context when assessing the symbols of good farming. The failure to inscribe multiple forms of good farming within practices of animal disease self-government and narrowly associate good farming with disease freedom means they lack cultural relevance. The main objective of this paper is to investigate whether economic uncertainty affects narrow money demand in New Zealand and whether the specified money-demand function remains stable over time. New Zealand adopted inflation-targeting in the early 1990s by discarding monetary-targeting or any other strategy of monetary policy for price stability on the grounds that instability in the narrow money-demand function might sever the relationship among money, output, prices, interest rates, and exchange rates, as the classical monetary theory suggests. This paper specifies an augmented money-demand function for an open economy that includes economic uncertainty and inflation volatility as two additional determinants of money demand. Quarterly data for New Zealand for the period 1995Q1–2017Q4 is used to determine whether these variables remain significant in an augmented money-demand function in this country. The empirical results, obtained by the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration, suggest that there exists a cointegral relationship among variables in the specified model and that economic uncertainty negatively affects narrow money demand in New Zealand. Further, the empirical results, obtained by the non-linear ARDL (NARDL) approach, suggest that economic uncertainty affects narrow money demand asymmetrically. An increase in economic uncertainty lowers narrow money demand, while a decrease in economic uncertainty does not increase – and​ instead seems to decrease – narrow money demand. Unlike with economic uncertainty, an increase in inflation volatility, which represents inflation uncertainty, increases narrow money demand. Although it is not conclusively established in this paper, the effect of inflation uncertainty on narrow money-demand seems symmetric. The narrow money-demand function is found in this paper to have remained stable irrespective of whether the model is estimated by the ARDL or NARDL approach. This paper draws the conclusion that the abandonment of money in the formulation of monetary policy strategy, such as inflation-targeting in New Zealand, cannot be justified on the grounds of instability in the narrow money-demand function. Cultural inclusion generates a positive impact by socially increasing pride for individuals or economically increasing a country's global capital. Currently, in New Zealand (NZ), not many strategies exist that ensure inclusion of culture in new products introduced locally and globally. Further, cultural inclusion in products appears highly represented in the tourist markets, but not so much in the domestic markets. This paper examines the current NZ strategies for cultural inclusion in product development of different sized companies that supply locally and globally through three case studies and compares the findings with theoretical models used in other regions. Findings elaborate that NZ lacks in documented standardized strategies when it comes to cultural inclusion. A positive impact of having such a strategy is perceived by participating companies with a culture for open innovation to ensure they are following a process approach that can help include cultural aspects appropriately. Creating a unique position for the brand globally, increasing global capital and deeper connectivity, and increasing the understanding of culture were some key benefits identified. However, a few steps in the new product development process were found largely lacking in NZ firms, such as communication with cultural representatives and leaders. A cultural inclusion model is developed based on the study findings to include an open innovation culture that can help NZ companies be more inclusive in their design and establish a unique NZ market for generating positive impacts. Innovation platforms (IPs) that support agricultural innovation to enable transition processes towards more sustainable agriculture provide a space where conflicts of interest among actors in the existing agricultural system (the so called incumbent regime) may play out. Sometimes these conflicts over how actors will benefit from an action are not revealed until actors are brought together. However, a barrier to change occurs when IP actors use their existing power to mobilise resources to influence if and how individual and collective interests are aligned. In the context of agricultural innovation and transitions, this paper uses the power in transitions framework (Avelino and Wittmayer, 2016), along with analytical perspectives on conflicts and role perceptions, to understand how consciously staging or revealing conflicts of interest among IP actors changed role perceptions and power relations among these actors. The paper explores this topic in two IPs addressing agricultural production and sustainability challenges in New Zealand's agricultural sector. Conflicts were staged in IPs when one group of actors mobilised resources that enabled them to move existing power relations from one-sided, to synergistic or a mutual dependency. This enabled conflicts to be acknowledged and solved. In contrast, conflicts were not staged when actors mobilised resources to maintain antagonostic power relations. Our cases demontrate that staging conflicts to change actors' role perceptions is an important intermediary step to forming new power relations in the agricultural system. Optimal nutrition care is important in the management of cystic fibrosis (CF). This paper summarises the '2017 Nutrition Guidelines for Cystic Fibrosis in Australia and New Zealand (NZ)'. CF dietitians formulated 68 practice questions which were used to guide a systematic literature search and review of the evidence for nutrition in CF. Identified papers underwent quality and evidence assessment using the American Dietetic Association quality criteria checklist and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) rankings. Evidence statements, graded recommendations and practice points were developed covering core nutrition topics (assessment and nutrition interventions including oral, enteral and micronutrient supplementation); nutrition-related co-morbidities (including pancreatic insufficiency, CF-related diabetes, bone health and distal intestinal obstruction syndrome); and key new topic areas (genetic modulator therapies, overweight/obesity and complementary therapies). In this paper, we describe a case-study exploring the use of 600 MW of power from New Zealand's Manapouri Power Station to produce hydrogen for export via water electrolysis. Three H 2 carriers were considered: liquid H 2 , ammonia, and toluene hydrogenation/methylcyclohexane dehydrogenation. Processes were simulated in Aspen's HYSYS for each of the carriers to determine their associated energy and annualised capital expenditure costs. We found that the total capital investment for all carriers was surprisingly consistent, but with quite different splits between the electrolysis and carrier formation plants. Based on our analysis the energy availability for liquid H 2 ranged from 53.9 to 60.7% depending on the energy cost associated with cryogenic H 2 liquefaction. The energy availability for liquid ammonia was 37.5% after conversion back to H 2 , or 53.6% if the ammonia can be used directly as a fuel. For toluene/methylcyclohexane the energy availability was 41.2%. The total of the electricity and annualised capital costs per kg of H 2 ranged from NZ$5.63 to NZ$6.43 for liquid H 2 , NZ$6.24 to NZ$8.91 for ammonia and was NZ$7.86 for toluene/methylcyclohexane, using a net electricity cost of NZ$70/MWh. The cost of hydrogen (or energy in the case of direct use ammonia) was more strongly influenced by the efficiency of energy retention than on capital investment, as the electricity costs contributed approximately two thirds of total costs. There has been extensive research in traffic state estimation that accounts for the stochastic nature of traffic flow models. However, these studies often exhibit limitations such as an exclusive focus on motorway traffic and a reliance on a single data source. This paper departs from these methods by introducing a stochastic estimation framework that is specifically designed for urban arterial traffic. The framework has the capability to incorporate multiple data sources, which serves to improve its accuracy and robustness. The framework is composed of three components: (i) a stochastic traffic flow model, (ii) a filtering algorithm, and (iii) an algorithm for incorporating multi-source measurements. In terms of the traffic model, we introduce a new stochastic Switching Mode Model that can be applied to arterial roads that have both signalized and unsignalized intersections. This model does not consider uncertainty in the current mode of operation, which substantially reduces the computational complexity because there is only one mode at each time step. Furthermore, we propose three different filtering algorithms for multi-source traffic estimation, including the incremental stochastic Kalman Filter (SKF), the incremental stochastic Unscented Kalman Filter (SUKF), and the hybrid approach. Since the SKF can only deal with linear functions, non-linear measurement equations need to be linearized using first-order Taylor expansions. The SUKF is based on the Unscented Transform (UT), which enables it to work with a wider range of functions regardless of linearity, non-linearity, or non-differentiability. The hybrid algorithm is a combination of the SKF and the SUKF, in which linear equations are treated similarly to the SKF, and non-linear equations are handled with the UT in the same way as in the SUKF. The performances of these algorithms were similar when applied to the synthetic data of an urban arterial in Christchurch CBD, New Zealand. Forensic identification using vein patterns in standard colour images presents significant challenges due to their low visibility. Recent efforts have employed various computational techniques, including artificial neural networks and optical vein disclosure, to enhance vein pattern detection. However, these methods still face limitations in reliability when compared to Near-Infrared (NIR) reference images. One of the biggest challenges of the studies is the limited number of available datasets that have synchronised colour and NIR images from body limbs. This paper introduces a new dataset comprising 602 pairs of synchronised NIR and RGB forearm images from a diverse population, ethically approved and collected in Auckland, New Zealand. Using this dataset, we also propose a conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) model to translate RGB images into their NIR equivalents. Our evaluations focus on matching accuracy, vein length measurements, and contrast quality, demonstrating that the translated vein patterns closely resemble their NIR counterparts. In recent years, the nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity of aristolochic acid have attracted worldwide attention, and the traditional Chinese medicine containing this ingredient has been banned in many places, affecting the TCM industry. To meet this challenge, researchers have developed various detection methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and thin-layer chromatography. A rapid detection method must therefore be developed to ensure safety. A polyclonal antibody capable of recognizing aristolochic acid was prepared, and an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) was established to detect the amount of aristolochic acid in the sample to be measured. Methods Using 1-(4-chlorophenyl) cyclobutylamine as a hapten, immunogens and coating antigens were obtained by coupling with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and chicken ovalbumin (OVA) using the active ester method. UV scanning confirmed the successful coupling of the conjugate, and New Zealand white rabbits were immunized. The obtained antibody serum was screened for the best antibody by ic-ELISA detection. Use the chessboard method to determine three optimal combinations of original coating concentration and antibody dilution ratio, establish a standard curve for each combination to obtain the best combination, and establish a rapid detection method. Finally, the standard aristolochic acid A was added to the purchased apple vinegar and canned coffee for recycling experiments to verify the detection method.By changing the antigen antibody concentration, the antibody showed the highest sensitivity to aristolochic acid standard at the original coating, 1000-fold dilution, IC 50 of 24.88 ng/mL, limit of detection IC 10 of 3.19 ng/mL, and detection range IC 20 -IC 80 of 6.81–90.91 ng/mL. The recovery experiments under this conditions yielded a recovery rate of 92%–105%, within reasonable limits, indicating the success of the ELISA rapid detection method. Conclusion The enzyme-linked immunoassay method established in this paper can quickly detect the content of aristolochic acid in the sample to be tested, and the antibody prepared by this method has good broad-spectrum and can detect other aristolochic acid, such as aristolochic acid A, aristolochic acid B, aristolochic acid C, and aristolochic acid D. The flexural buckling behaviour and resistances of cold-formed austenitic stainless steel flat-oval hollow section columns are studied in this paper, based on experiments and numerical modelling. An experimental investigation was firstly conducted and included tensile coupon tests, initial geometric imperfection measurements and major-axis and minor-axis pin-ended compression tests on ten column specimens. The experimental investigation was followed by a numerical investigation, where the column test results were used to validate finite element models; upon validation, parametric studies were conducted to generate additional numerical data over a wide range of cross-section dimensions and member effective lengths. The obtained test and numerical data were adopted to assess the applicability of the relevant buckling curves for cold-formed austenitic stainless steel circular and elliptical hollow section columns, as specified in the European code, American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard, to cold-formed austenitic stainless steel flat-oval hollow section columns. It was revealed from the assessment results that the buckling curves of the European code and American specification led to overall accurate and consistent flexural buckling resistance predictions, while the flexural buckling resistance predictions from the buckling curve of the Australian/New Zealand standard were slightly conservative. As Covid-19 made its way to the shores of Aotearoa New Zealand in 2020, Kiwis took to Twitter to share their experiences and opinions regarding both the virus and government responses. In this paper, we examine a corpus of 1001 tweets to see just how Twitter users utilize different linguistic and politeness strategies when sharing directives conveying stance toward government Covid-19 measures. While there has been research into the use of directives in spoken and written language, there has been little exploration of how directives are used in the language of Social Media. Often considered difficult to classify even in more traditional language genres, Twitter corpora pose additional challenges. We propose a strategy to identify and classify directives using syntactic and pragmatic features, and use this strategy to identify linguistic patterns of both in relation to stance toward government Covid-19 measures. While we find that the most prototypical directive within our corpus is largely consistent with previous definitions, we also find that tweeters exhibit a striking amount of variation in directive strategy, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to directive identification and classification. In 2013 the Health Research Council of New Zealand began a stream of funding titled 'Explorer Grants', and in 2017 changes were introduced to the funding mechanisms of the Volkswagen Foundation 'Experiment!' and the New Zealand Science for Technological Innovation challenge 'Seed Projects'. All three funding streams aim at encouraging novel scientific ideas, and all now employ random selection by lottery as part of the grant selection process. The idea of funding science by lottery emerged independently in several corners of academia, including in philosophy of science. This paper reviews the conceptual and institutional landscape in which this policy proposal emerged, how different academic fields presented and supported arguments for the proposal, and how these have been reflected (or not) in actual policy. The paper presents an analytical synthesis of the arguments presented to date, notes how they support each other and shape policy recommendations in various ways, and where competing arguments highlight the need for further analysis or more data. Abstract Tourism is one of the most important economic activities in New Zealand as tourists commonly travel by air to the various regions of this geographically isolated archipelago. This paper aims to investigate: (i) how regional tourism demand and airline capacity affect each other; and (ii) how both affect the housing prices in New Zealand's smaller regions. The paper empirically examines these inter-relationships between regional tourism demand and air transport, and their joint effects on the housing prices by constructing a three-stage least squares (3SLS) structural model employing a panel dataset of New Zealand's six smaller airports and regions from January 2008 to December 2014. Empirical results showed that increased regional tourism activity raises airline capacity and vice versa. Importantly, domestic airline capacity has a statistically significant impact on regional housing prices but not regional tourist demand (with the exception of Queenstown as a major and popular tourist centre). Policy implications of the key findings for regional tourism and air transport developments are discussed. Abstract Economics, demographics, land use change, and transport interact in complex and dynamic ways. To inform urban policy decision-making it is important to develop tools that incorporate the interactions of these systems in meaningful ways. Historically, models of these systems have been developed in isolation, and many agencies have already invested large amounts of time and money into developing these independent models. It is thus often desirable to couple existing models, rather than to develop a completely new integrated model. Coupling together independently developed models introduces many challenges including dealing with different spatial and temporal scales, base datasets and levels of aggregation, as well as bringing up deeper questions around the underlying paradigms, assumptions and limitations of the models. This paper describes the key challenges encountered when coupling an existing integrated model of land use change, economic activity, and population (the 'Integrated Scenario Explorer' model) with an existing transport model (the 'Wellington Transport Strategy Model') for the Wellington region in New Zealand. The case study results show that the coupling produces substantial differences in the urban land use change looking forward to 2041, specifically it affects the location of the urban intensification. The paper summarises the important considerations for modellers when coupling independently developed models, highlights the importance of understanding the underlying theories of the component models, and emphasises the need to develop pragmatic solutions that are guided by the intended use of the resulting integrated model. The paper draws on a narrative study which explored the stances of five Swedish for Immigrants teachers in relation to problematic topics through the use of narrative frames, picture prompts and interviews. Findings from the study suggest that teachers' choices to engage with or avoid values teaching and controversial topics can best be understood in terms of dialogic answerability, namely a moral responsiveness and responsibility to students as well as to the host society. The refurbishment of existing buildings offers the greatest opportunity to maximise carbon reduction within the built environment. Although the conceptual framework of the refurbishment process incorporating various methods, tools, and systems to support decision making in reducing whole-of-life carbon emissions exists in the literature, empirical research reporting on how and why the decisions are made in current industry practice is lacking. This paper aims to address this knowledge gap by investigating the decision-making process of building refurbishment considering whole-of-life carbon reduction using three real-life case studies that incorporate decarbonisation decisions. The important findings emerged from an interactive analysis between theoretical propositions and cross-case synthesis. The study sheds a new insight into (1) the effective adoption of building rating systems, (2) the required whole-of-life carbon reduction targets, (3) the importance of establishing a dedicated financial budget for carbon-reduction refurbishment solutions, (4) the need for adaptable refurbishment designs and long-term strategies, (5) holistic design reports, (6) the promotion of early contractor involvement (ECI) approach, (7) government funding and incentives, and (8) the availability of supply chains and data. The originality of the paper is providing a new understanding of the decision-making practices and challenges faced in the refurbishment process, in which lessons learnt for improving the implementation of building refurbishment towards zero carbon are recommended. This paper unravels two meanings of relational values and elaborates on how these may add to the toolkit of conservation. Firstly, it is explained how relational values are a third axiological category and compare to instrumental and intrinsic values assigned to nature. Secondly, it is clarified how relational values appear part of a shift that seeks to improve conservation decision-making processes by mapping and recognising the multiple ways of valuing nature people have developed over time. This would allow to more comprehensively capture the context-specific perspectives on human-nature relations. It is argued that these two meanings of relational values underscore the need not to conflate the questions of how to make valuation methods more socially inclusive with prescriptive questions of why we should protect nature. To illustrate this, this paper focuses on New Zealand conservation legislation that demonstrates how relational values, rooted in place-based indigenous knowledge and traditions, are coded into rights of nature law. Partially based on this it is argued that while social inclusiveness in conservation is important, this may still allow for anthropocentrically inspired thinking. Ultimately, it is concluded that the potential of relational values can be more fully realised by using them to offer prescriptive guidance to conservation decision-making and practice. Quality assurance in radiotherapy (QART) is essential to ensure the scientific integrity of a clinical trial. This paper reports the findings of the retrospective QART assessment for all centres that participated in PORTEC-3; a randomised controlled trial that compared pelvic radiotherapy with concurrent chemoradiotherapy to the pelvis followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. The trial showed an overall survival benefit for the addition of the chemotherapy in the management of women with high-risk endometrial cancer. Clinicians were invited to upload a randomly selected case/s treated at each of the participating sites. Panel reviewers analysed the contours to certify that the target volumes and organ at risk structures were contoured according to guidelines. The results were categorised into acceptable, minor variation, major variation or unevaluable. The radiotherapy plans were dosimetrically evaluated using the well-established Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) protocol. Between August 2010 and January 2018, data from 146 patients of 686 consecutively treated patients were retrospectively reviewed. All 16 Australia and New Zealand and 71 of 77 international centres uploaded data for evaluation. In total, 3514 dosimetric and contour variables were reviewed. Of these, 3136 variables were deemed acceptable (89.2%), with 335 minor (9.6%) and 43 major variations (1.2%). Major contour variations included the clinical target volume vaginal vault, clinical target volume parametria and differential planning target volume vault expansion. The results of the QART assessment confirmed high uniformity and low rates of both minor and major deviations in contouring and dosimetry in all sites. This supports the safe introduction of the PORTEC-3 treatment protocol into routine clinical practice. • Radiotherapy benchmarking reduces the major and minor deviations noted in contouring and dosimetry. • Incorporation of a quality QART programme reduces source bias and facilitates adoption of the trial results. • Inclusion of real-time QART will improve and standardise international radiotherapy quality in future trials. This paper describes a nuanced methodological approach that responds to the notion that knowledge is socially positioned. Four researchers sought to answer: How can Contributive Research Method be employed in a workshop with participants to build knowledge, provide trustworthy data collection, and leverage the opportunity to revise open content? Using an Adapted Interactive Model of Research Design (adapted from Maxwell, 2009) for engaging in the Contributive Research Method (Puig et al., 2018), data was gathered from an online satellite event, involving 34 institutions from Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Of the 97 participants, 57 contributed data. The presentation utilized digital tools (Mentimeter, and Hypothes.is) with an online learning community to promote the wellbeing of librarians. An Adapted Interactive Research Design (AIRD) together with a Contributive Research Method (CRM) (Puig et al., 2018) and CAST analysis (AIRD with CRM + CAST) were effective as a nuanced research design. Contributive Research creates an opportunity to truly blend research with the scholarship of learning and teaching where it could be used in Higher Education during lectures and potentially in classrooms. Parents with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. The NICU experience may also lead to impaired parenting and early childhood socio-emotional problems. Psychosocial interventions can reduce NICU parent distress. Yet many are time-intensive and costly to deliver. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based psychological therapy, may address these needs. ACT has been shown to be effective in reducing distress of parents of children with chronic illnesses, particularly when combined with parent education. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to determine if a digital intervention that uses a brief form of ACT plus parent education will reduce the stress of primary caregivers with preterm babies in the NICU more than a digital education-only intervention or standard care control group. In a randomised controlled cluster trial design, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: ACT plus education; education-only; or standard care control. The primary outcome will be parental/caregiver stress levels, measured on the Parental Stress Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Secondary outcomes include overall stress, anxiety, and depression. Outcome measures will be evaluated at baseline, two weeks after enrolment, discharge to home, and 3-months post-discharge. This study will explore the efficacy of a digital ACT plus education intervention on parental stress levels. While position papers have advocated for the use of ACT with NICU parents, this study will be the first to test ACT as a stand-alone intervention with this population. • The flexural buckling behaviour of austenitic stainless steel semi-oval hollow section columns was studied. • Twelve pin-ended column tests were conducted. • FE models were developed to validate against the test results and then adopted to conduct parametric studies. • The codified buckling curves were evaluated and led to an overall good level of design accuracy. Semi-oval hollow section is an innovative cross-section profile and consists of one semi-circular flange, one flat flange and two flat webs. While the semi-circular flange (exposed to fluid or wind) offers a low level of hydrodynamic or aerodynamic drag, the flat elements facilitate connections with other members. The flexural buckling behaviour and resistances of austenitic stainless steel semi-oval hollow section columns are investigated in this paper. An experimental programme was firstly conducted on two austenitic stainless steel semi-oval hollow sections, with six column specimens of varying member lengths adopted for each cross-section, and included tensile coupon tests, initial geometric imperfection measurements and pin-ended column tests. Both 'C'-shaped flexural buckling (with failure specimens bowing towards semi-circular flanges) and 'reverse C'-shaped flexural buckling (with failure specimens bowing towards flat flanges) were observed upon testing. The experimental programme was accompanied by a numerical modelling programme, with finite element models developed to simulate the test results and then adopted to conduct parametric studies to generate further numerical data. On the basis of the test and numerical data, the relevant buckling curves for austenitic stainless steel circular hollow section columns, as provided in the European code, American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard, were evaluated for their applicability to austenitic stainless steel semi-oval hollow section columns. The evaluation results generally revealed that the codified buckling curves led to overall accurate and consistent flexural buckling resistance predictions when used for austenitic stainless steel semi-oval hollow section columns. Although the management of emerging environmental risks has received more attention recently, planning and public policy scholars have not yet generated consensus on management approaches for environmental and occupational risks that remain poorly described, unquantified, and may be potentially 'unknowable'. Our case study focuses on exposure to respirable mineral dust (RMD), a specific category of particulate air pollution which includes examples such as respirable crystalline silica and asbestos fibres, as an example of a risk that is emerging and that has often 'escaped' regulations in many countries. This article (i) reviews prevailing risk management strategies and (ii) discusses their limitations when applied to the unique characteristics of RMD. The aim of the paper is to examine the suitability of existing risk management approaches for the evaluation of emerging environmental risks, which are bounded by significant uncertainties in quantifying the likelihood of the occurrence and/or severity of the hazard. Delirium is prevalent in the hospice population. Despite causing significant distress to patients and families, delirium is under-recognised. There is a need to better understand delirium prevention and outcomes in this population including people's experiences of delirium-prevention strategies in different cultural contexts. To determine whether the "PRESERVE Aotearoa" delirium prevention intervention was feasible and acceptable for Māori (indigenous peoples of Aotearoa/ New Zealand) and non-Māori patients with advanced cancer, their families (called whānau in this paper), and clinical staff. A qualitative semistructured interview substudy of a cohort PRESERVE Aotearoa feasibility study codesigned with a Māori partner to ensure inclusion of Māori-centred values. The study was underpinned conceptually by He Awa Whiria (braided rivers)—combining Western and Māori knowledges. Data were analysed using Hopwood and Srivasta's framework. Twenty-six patients and their whānau, 21 clinical staff and five researchers from two stand-alone hospices in the North Island, Aotearoa/New Zealand. Finding showed that, for the most part, participants considered the study interventions feasible and acceptable. Inductive analysis resulted in four themes highlighting the importance to whānau of their participation in the study: benefits of learning about delirium; the affirmation of the caregiver role and whānau-centred care; valuing fundamentals of care; and research as legacy. This qualitative study found that it is feasible and acceptable to study multicomponent nonpharmacological delirium-prevention interventions in Aotearoa/New Zealand hospice inpatient units. This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations into the web crippling behaviour and load-carrying capacity of stainless steel built-up I-section members under End-Two-Flange (ETF) concentrated transverse loading. An experimental programme was conducted on 23 austenitic and duplex stainless steel built-up I-section specimens, with each consisting of two identical press-braked channel sections assembled back-to-back by means of self-tapping screws. Following the experimental programme, a numerical modelling programme was performed, where finite element models were firstly developed to replicate the tests and then used to conduct parametric studies. Based on the test and numerical data, the existing design rules for stainless steel built-up I-section members failing by web crippling, as set out in the current European, American and Australian/New Zealand design standards, were assessed. The comparisons indicated that the European and Australian/New Zealand design standards resulted in overly conservative and rather scattered failure load predictions, while the American design standard led to less scattered failure load predictions, but with many predictions on the unsafe side. The test results, including load–end shortening curves, failure loads and failure modes, were presented, with the initial compressive stiffness and confinement effect analysed. The experimental programme was followed by a numerical modelling programme, where thermal and mechanical finite element models were developed and validated against the test results and afterwards used to conduct parametric studies to generate additional numerical data over a wide range of cross-section dimensions. Based on the test and numerical data, the relevant design rules for square natural aggregate concrete-filled carbon steel tube stub columns at ambient temperature, as specified in the European code, Australia/New Zealand standard and American specification, were evaluated, using post-fire material properties, for their applicability to square RACFSST stub columns after exposure to fire. The evaluation results generally revealed that the European code and Australian/New Zealand standard led to a good level of design accuracy, while the American specification resulted in slightly conservative post-fire cross-section compression resistance predictions. The purpose of this paper is (i) to re-assess the presence of submarine fan systems of Middle and Late Miocene age (Moki and Mount Messenger formations) previously mapped on the continental slope in offshore southern and central Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, and (ii), to demonstrate the occurrence of two newly mapped Late Miocene submarine fans in the deep-water part of offshore western Taranaki Basin, based on accepted seismic stratigraphic criteria for submarine fans. In our work we have found that the fans previously mapped amongst canyons and channels in the Moki and Mount Messenger formations on the upper and middle continental slope in southern and central Taranaki Basin do not fulfil established stratal criteria for submarine fan deposits. Moreover, detuning of 3D seismic reflection volumes for the Moki and Mount Messenger formation intervals ahead of amplitude attribute extraction, shows that the strata previously mapped as submarine fans based on amplitude alone, are merely artifacts of bed thickness. The two new fans systems of Late Miocene age that we map here, both attributed to the Mount Messenger Formation, principally comprise mudstone and represent a minor proportion of the Late Miocene succession that accumulated in southern and central parts of the basin. Our remapping of slope canyons and channels in the southern part of the basin and the identification of the two new fan systems in the western part of the basin are embodied in three new paloegeographic maps for the Middle and Late Miocene development of Taranaki Basin. A modern analogue for the two new Late Miocene fans in Taranaki Basin is the Hikurangi Fan at the terminus of the Hikurangi Channel, located outboard of the modern subduction zone of the Hikurangi margin along Eastern North Island. In geotechnical engineering, an appreciation of local geological conditions from similar sites is beneficial and can support informed decision-making during site characterization. This practice is known as "site recognition", which necessitates a rational quantification of site similarity. This paper proposes a data-driven method to quantify the similarity between two cross-sections based on the spatial variability of one soil property from a spectral perspective. Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS) is first used to obtain the discrete cosine transform (DCT) spectrum for a cross-section. Then DCT-based auto-correlation function (ACF) is calculated based on the obtained DCT spectrum using a set of newly derived ACF calculation equations. The cross-sectional similarity is subsequently reformulated as the cosine similarity of DCT-based ACFs between cross-sections. In contrast to the existing methods, the proposed method explicitly takes soil property spatial variability into account in an innovative way. The challenges of sparse investigation data, non-stationary and anisotropic spatial variability, and inconsistent spatial dimensions of different cross-sections are tackled effectively. Both numerical examples and real data examples from New Zealand are provided for illustration. Results show that the proposed method can rationally quantify cross-sectional similarity and associated statistical uncertainty from sparse investigation data. As significant stakeholders in the marine estate, Māori will play a central role in the proposed transition to a blue economy. While te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) aligns well with the blue economy, due to the consequences of colonisation and the specific circumstances caused by the Quota Management System and resulting Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation addressing historic Māori grievances regarding fishing rights, Māori also face a number of extra constraints regarding this transition. Managing fishing threats to populations of endemic, threatened Hector’s and Māui dolphins around New Zealand is a complex and controversial issue, underpinned by uncertain scientific knowledge. As such, it can be argued that it falls into the realm of post-normal science, which advocates transparency about uncertainties and stakeholder peer review of knowledge feeding into decision-making. This paper focuses on selected examples of modelling and risk assessment research relating to Hector’s and Māui dolphin threat management. It explores how knowledge is developed, shared and utilised by decision-makers, finding that uncertain scientific knowledge may be shared in ways that make it appear more certain, with some of the subjectivities involved in knowledge production hidden from view. Interviews with stakeholders illustrate how some stakeholders are aware of the subjectivities involved when uncertain knowledge underpins decision-making, so a lack of transparency may be leading to erosion of social trust in decisions made. This in turn can lead to a lack of support for dolphin conservation measures from key stakeholders such as the commercial fishing industry. The paper concludes that while moves towards increasing transparency and stakeholder involvement are apparent, a deeper embrace of post-normal science approaches to knowledge production and dissemination would contribute to effective dolphin threat management in New Zealand. The appearance of the built environment plays an important role in people's physical, financial and psychological wellbeing. In light of this, it is important to ensure that transformation of urban streets and public spaces through individual projects can satisfy the aesthetic needs of those who regularly use them. Within projects, outcomes are regularly controlled by a steering group working on behalf of the project sponsor and other internal stakeholders. To ensure that the needs of those outside the project group are also met, some local authorities in New Zealand review project design at the planning approval stage. This process invites experts, who in some cases informed by design guides, to evaluate the architectural design. This paper addresses the question of whether the ways places are changing align with public expectations. A mixed methods approach was used to elicit people's preferences for building and streetscape characteristics, where stimuli were first presented as photographic representations and secondly as real streetscapes in two New Zealand cities. The findings identify the streetscape design characteristics that were best liked by people as well as those that were disliked. Of particular interest was a comparison between the preferences expressed by lay members of the public with those of design and planning professionals.
